Norwegian here. This is actually a very respected band in Norway. The lead singer sadly died a few years ago making his way to his cabin getting caught in a storm.
That song is THE song. It's a masterpiece. Maybe it's just me being norwegian, but I love the constant folk tones throughout the song (well, most of their songs). It's just Windir at their best. No-one else did it like them.
Thanks guys for this band. I love Windir. I discovered them a few years ago and I love it so much. Valfar was such an inspiration. Such a talented guy. When I listen to "Journey To The End" my thoughts are high above and I imagine that day when Valfar was backing home during the heavy snow storm and never returned. This song is the best ending for him. Rest in peace Valfar. And thank you guys. Keep it up with good taste of music :) \m/
RIP Valfar, you are missed. They say the good die young and in this case it's true. Watch the last show they did after his death. The big body builder that sings is his brother. Always brings a tear to my eye
So now that you've listened to one of their lesser (but still damn good) songs, you should move on to 'Saknet', 'Fagning' or 'Svartasmeden og Lundamyrstrollet'. You're in for something really special with those. Windir is the best band ever for me. They only ever released four albums, but every single one is 10/10. 'Saknet' was so special to Valfar they never performed it live, and I've heard they played the album version of it in the church during Valfars funeral. If you didn't know, Windir was a one man band for the first two albums, with the singer and songwriter Valfar as the only member. Then a band named Ulcus joined in to complete the lineup before 1184, so they could play live. When Valfar passed away Windir disbanded and the other members went on to start Vreid, who I know you've listened to before.
@@atheist101 He released the first demo when he was 17 I believe, but he may have spent a year or two making it for all I know. All I know is it's good stuff!
Similar situation here. The song "Journey To The End" got me not only into Windir, but into black metal and its atmospheric and folk subgenre. Windir for me will always be the unsurpassed number one. RIP Valfar.
Thank you a lot!!!! I knew it! I can now die in peace!!! Check those keyboard bridges on other magnificent songs from Windir ;) As to the cover art, I think it is a menhir. You bet they used to apply different styles of music, going from Black Metal, Pagan/Viking Black Metal, Folk Metal, Classical (they have a looooot of hymns and anthem like tracks) and some hints of progressive here and there. I said "used" because after the death of vocalist (I think he was kind of a mentor to the band) Valfar, the band members spread away. Nowdays, you have COR SCORPII, a band which featured ex-members from Windir, and that kept their legacy playing a quite similar sound. They released a "recent" album (quite good I must say) after a period of 8 or 10 years (not sure) of hibernation. The album is called "Ruin". You will not be disappointed to check both: Cor Scorpii, and all the remaining Windir stuff ;) 1 grande abraço para os dois! Cheers guys!!
Oh Journey to the end will take you places :) I have to point out that the singer sang clean Norwegian folk style vocals at one point of the song. His clean vocals are beautiful
The legacy of a wonderful and for me personally, the most beloved (with the Germans from the group HELLOWEEN) band in all metal music: COR SCORPII, MISTUR, SIGTYR! SOGNAMETAL is magic!R.I.P.VALFAR,R.I.P.WINDIR!I miss you so much!
Long live the mighty valfar!!!! He is Windir!!! Thank you guys for given them a shot!! If you want some real sogna metal, then listen to the song saknet!!! Or arntor ein windir!!!
Should check out thier only DVD, its right after the frontman passed so his Brother does vocals on most of it, such an amazing DVD! Also you need to check out Rimfrost if you are starting to like this style, you will be steamrolled by the shear amount of riffs! I'll request them for next month on the patreon.
Moonshiner is a illegal brewed Whiskey, right? Think I heard about it in some Irish Drinking Songs. :D Interesting, "Todeswalzer" is German and means "Waltz of the Dead", just in case you didn't know. You really hear the "old style" in this music, very Blackmetalish, but good tunes never get out of style.
the best Windir song is "Kampen"... and you guys should check out a pretty obscure French band called Osculum Infame, their album "Dor-Nu-Fauglith" is incredible... and if you don't know the French band Blut Aus Nord, the first 2 albums "Ultima Thulée" and "Memoria Vetusta I - Fathers Of The Icy Age" are legendary
@@APREACTS from Wiki: After a trip to Italy in 1820-1821 Johan Christian Dahl settled permanently in Dresden. There he drew a number of ideal Norwegian landscapes. From 1826 on, there was a change in his work reflecting new understanding for Norwegian landscape. Every album is amazing, he never produced a bad song.

Didn't he also do his two demos when he was a teen? I remember reading somewhere he made the first demo at 15
@@atheist101 He released the first demo when he was 17 I believe, but he may have spent a year or two making it for all I know. All I know is it's good stuff!
So sad that Valfar passed away so early! 😢 All 4 albums are just incredible! I would recommend "Kong Hydnes Haug"! 🖤

I rarely laugh alone in front of my screen but that Bob Ross/Black Metal comment broke the dam XD
That was pure gold.
Please react to Windir - Journey to the End
Its a masterpiece.
I couldn't help staring at your beard as it seems to slip behind the "Wintersun" logo on your shirt
The song is not sped up in that part up. They change the time signature from 4/4 to 2/4
Hey guys you should listen to Kroda - Cry to me, River. As good as WINDIR 🤘
At 2:07 the look in the eyes of the one with the beard is magic!
react to more Windir songs. They are all incredible. Its sound is from another world
