Should of tested it on a textured surface anyway afterwards, just to compare it.
Yeah, I've used other mounts that use 3m tape as well and they worked just fine on my textured dash. I'm sure the don't use on a textured service is just to cover them legally so if the tape fails and breaks your phone.
@@Stoneysilence I think the harder part is removal. The string method wouldn't slide under the adhesive as well on a textured surface.

An option to this. Since it seems to work, for the most part. You could get an inexpensive plain phone case, and add the magnetic holder to that instead of your phone. Thanks for the review.

I have an Otter box case and it has a cutout on the back where the Apple logo is and the magnetic piece fits in there perfectly so the phone still lays flat.
Curious to see how it would hold up in the heat of Summer. Things that I've attached to my dash always end up falling off from the heat melting whatever adhesive is being used.
Does fine. Have had a Steelie (similar to video) in my car for over a year in South Florida with my cars thermometer reading 110 degrees and being in high humidity
They use 3M VHB.
That shit if you let it cure and wipe the surface beforehand, works better than steel bolts man. Its very very strong

You can replace the adhesive with 3m wall mount...ehat you pointed out is the only "flaw" the magnet is incredibly strong and in fact, just saved my phone I left on my car roof...thank you fastball
I love this channel. You review stuff people are interested in trying, but not wanting to buy unless they know it is as advertised. You also care about your videos and dont push 3 out a day for revenue. Great content!
I wish Otterbox would maketheir own accesories that are integrated into the actual cases. Maybe have a pre-built in magnet and their own stand.
Otterbox cases are already expensive as hell adding more features would make them more money

JustAMessenger - the plate in your leg is likely not ferromagnetic. Otherwise you can imagine the disaster that would occur in an MRI.

Stainless and titanium arent magnetic most of the surgical grade metal isnt magnetic
It works great. My problem is when I put a credit card in my shirt pocket with my phone with the " magnet". I've killed several credit cards before I figured out the problem.
The magnetic part should be where you mount the phone. Just a piece of thin metal should be attached to your phone
Schosche makes a much better one the phone part is flat and just a metal plate the magnet is the part that goes on the dash. I had the same product a few years ago with their first model that was the magnet on the phone and the metal ball

To be honest I avoid all EDC products that got strong magnet. It's just too risky and not worth it.

All you need is a Mounting Disk for Car Dashboards and then put the Fastball Phone Mount on that and it should work!! It's not good to have your phone by the car vents!! If you turn the heat on, however, you may overheat it. So don't put your phone by the A/C vents if you are going to pump hot air out of them. Great review!!
It looks perfect for me, except for the textured-surface limitation. I'd just throw a cheap phone cover in my car and attach the magnet to it and just switch cases when I needed to mount it so I wouldn't have to deal with the double thickness of the phone+mount.
Just for the hell of it, I'd like to see you do a quick test on a textured surface in your car. Perhaps it may work if the texture isn't too deep. Thanks for the review!
Walmart has a $4 magnetic mount that attaches to the vent and has a flat metal plate that can go underneath your case. Works great.
Couldn't the magnet potentially interfere with a phone's magnetometer? It looks like it didn't with yours, but other models?

I have one half of the velcro on my case and the second half of the velcro on multiple locations in my truck (dash, steering wheel, visor, etc.)
If you type on it when it’s on the fridge or metal surface does it still move like that ?
Those sticky mounts are decent concepts but far from ideal. I bought an Anker one last year before a Europe trip and it worked fine, bought it back to the States and it worked fine until a few hot summer days and the adhesive just melted; fell right off. They're good if you're in a pinch but you might as well get one of the air vent mounts or one that mounts on the windshield.
The Anker, might I add, actually had a flat magnetic plate to put on your phone, though I just placed it on the inside of my phone case 😄
Just curious why you didn't mount it on the left side of the vents, where it's closer to you the driver and less chance of being distracted using phone while driving.
Exactly, the mount should be within arm's reach (esp. if you don't have a hands-free setup).
I use the Steelie mount which is similar but the ball mount has a clip for air con vents and it works really well. I think the magnet is slightly smaller than the one you reviewed but it still prevents use on a flat surface. Being able to stick my phone on any metal surface is very handy though.
It looks like it works good but the concern I have is that magnet on the back of the phone what if he gets Exposed to your credit cards or your wallet and It will demagnetize them so that could be a negative
Getting around the textured surface limitation is easy. I faced a similar problem with a different phone mount.
Get some 3M foam adhesive, or some other adhesive that works on a textured surface. Then cut a small piece of plexiglass to fit. Apply both to the dashboard and now you have a smooth flat surface. It also works for evening out slight curves that may interfere with mounting stuff to the dashboard.

That 3m stuff is super good, been holding my phone on a very textured dash for two years now, and that's in summer heat of 118 degrees !
Great suggestion! I have big problems with things requiring the use of suction cups, and never can get those things to stick very long. Betting your suggestion would be good for suction cups as well! Thanks
How about attaching it to a phone case, and leaving the case in your car. Whenever you need to use it, just pop the phone in that case.

I've been using the Nite-Ize Steelie for months. It is essentially the same as this one with an almost identical magnet on the phone. Size has been a non issue and I never really notice it.

I'm wondering if it will work attached to the windshield. I attach my GPS mount up near the top of the windshield on my SUV as I'm 5 ft tall and it's not in my line of vision at all.
Might leave some residue after it is in the same spot for a prolonged period of time. (Sure some Goo-Gone or Rubbing Alchohol) would solve that. Also good to see a 3M product used and not a cheap generic tape.
I've not used Fastball, but I have been using Scosche's MagicMount Dash and I've been pretty impressed. My phone(s) have yet to fall and the adhesive works great. The Dash mount has two flexible feet to help adhere to curved surfaces, and the magnets inside are strong enough to work through most thin cases.

I bought one like this through the Next Deal shop. Finding the right place on your Dash is crucial. The adhesive didn’t last too long in the extreme weather conditions of Chicago, so once I found a good spot, I removed their adhesive backing and used Gorilla Super Glue to mount it. When you use the Gorilla Super Glue it doesn’t matter if the surface is textured or not. As for the piece on the back of the phone, I use an Otterbox case and put the mount right on top of the Apple logo. There is an indention right there in the case so the phone sits flat. I now have a mount in every vehicle and it makes attaching my phone to it super easy and VERY secure.
NiteIze makes a similar mount system. Though this one looks better because the ball mouth has the added texture on it. The major flaw with both of these systems, however, is the fact the magnetic piece sits on the phone. I've personally had my debit card's magnetic strip demagnetized because I had my phone and wallet in the same pocket.
I would be interested to find out how it would have done on a textured surface anyway and how or if it stays in place while going over speed bumps.
I have use a similar magnetic phone holder but I found that the magnetic part that attach onto the back of the phone make my phone lagging, inaccurate to touch & some time phone just getting freeze
if the size is an issue you can get a second case for your phone without the mount (i have to remove my phone from my case to charge wireless.............. and also you can get more than one and mouth the base to the other locations you think you will need them.

I watched another review for this product where a bit heavier phone was used with the mount in a car, and the phone did not stay in one position, that is to say, when the reviewer placed the phone focused on her while she was driving, the phone would slowly start to face downwards. It may not work great for all phones.
Sandy Ell niteize makes a larger stronger magnet for big phones/ tablets or they are used for people the off-road.
My question is this- I’ve used one of the flat phone mounts with magnets, however whenever I tried to play music via Bluetooth or call people, the magnet affected the sounds, making them kinda pulse in and out. My mom and dad didn’t have any of those problems though, so idk if it was my phone or my cars Bluetooth or what.
I've had a similar mount with the same design. It magnetized my compass, completely breaking my navigation.
I love my iOttie Qi mount. It’s got a super strong suction cup with gel adhesive stuff so you can use it on curved and textured surfaces, it has a button in the center the phone pushes against to clamp it shut automatically, it stays in place but is still easy to switch portrait/landscape and charges wirelessly. Love it.

Like most in my industry, I utilize digital-radio transmitter/ receivers
to to trigger my studio lights from the camera.
Rather than the previous method of hanging the receivers on the lights with a small strap which allowed the receivers to swing and bang against the light whenever the light was readjusted...I now use these mounts with very satisfying results.
One test I would like to have seen would have been it while plugged in to a charger. Lots of the time when I plug in my charger, especially for loner road trips, the weight slowly starts to tilt my phone/ can some times even pull it off.

I’ve used this style for a few years. It worked pretty well. One downside is when the magnet is on the phone it attracts metal dust. After a while the phone drifts/tilt down. Very annoying. The strong magnet is tough to clean. Thanks for the review.
I have one for work that’s a suction cup that attaches to the windshield and then has a firm bendable “tube” that has a magnet on the end of it. A thin piece of metal attaches to your phone (I attached mine to my textured phone case) and you’re ready to go. Plus, aside from the thin metal piece, you can remove the mount and it’s like it was never there. Then you can re install it anywhere it’ll suction to.

I’m trying to find a 10 ft braided lightning cable that is durable. I have gone through 3 anker brand that are suppose to be best rated and they fail quickly. Can you do a review on some please?
Also, if you have an iPhone 8 or later that charges through the back on a flat charger any of these mounts stop the charger from being able to be used. I can’t mount anything back there and still wireless charge my phine
I've had this mount for over a year now. Never once has it dropped my phone. My dash is textured AND curved, mount sticks to it just fine. I actually love the magnet on my phone. Where I work, there's an abundance of metal surfaces and it's nice to be able to stick my phone to just about anything.
What should the ambient temperature be for adhesion ?
I've used a couple of phone mounts like that. The issue I normally run into is the adhesive melting during the summer. I live in Texas, so internal car temperatures get pretty hot. Maybe revisit this review in the summer months?

how did it work when recording and driving down the road? did you try and see if it would stick to the textured surface, i dont think the texture on a cars dash is much of a texture to effect it but i dont know.
I've never had much luck with adhesives or suction cups holding a phone on curved or textured dashes in the past.
I got a cheap Amazon add-on item that is somewhat like the Fastball. What goes on the phone is not the magnet but just a flat circle, thinner than a dime. The mount in the car is the ball, but also a flat top with a similar concave as what was on your phone. The ball is fixed, but the top can be removed. I have mounted it on my dash for 6 months, and the dash is textured like carbon fiber... This thing is solid and very convenient.
Are you sure the mount didn't come with metallic discs? Because I have a similar product, and the part you attached to your phone stays on the metallic ball, and the disc(ultra thin) goes on your phone

Love the video. Keep em coming. My only suggestion is I think you over thought the textured surface. True the dashes are technically textured but I think it’s referring more to heavily textured stuff. Car dashboards are usually okay for those adhesive pads
Could you possibly review the ProClip phone mount? I know they make 2 different mounting location versions for the 2013+ Fusion, I just never tried them and was curious how those would compare to this.
Nite Ize has a series of phone mounts like this one at different sizes. The magnet you mount on the back of the phone is thinner and the ball bearings are a little bit smaller and easier to mount in the car. They also use 3M adhesive for the mounting adhesive though.

Yes, I use a cup mounted magnetic holder from Macally. It's awesome although I had to jury rig a containment cup. My cup holders are smaller than standard. It's working really well!
I bought a similar phone mount made by VAVA on Amazon. The ball base is the same. But instead of having the magnetic socket part stuck directly to your phone, it is a separate piece that is the middle man between the ball and a thin metal disc that sticks to the phone. It gives you the same exact function but gets rid of the annoying thickness of the magnet.

I keep my phone in a leather folio case (front and back are covered). Will the part that adheres to the phone stick to leather?
Probably, yes. But leather is a natural material that shrinks and expands with temperature (why car interiors crack over time). You'd be better off with the kind of magnet mount that has a thin steel plate that you can stick inside your case (on the hard surface of the phone itself). The downside of those is that they can block wireless charging and NFC payments.
I got a free phone mount from Stop Wrex when I rode in a Ride of Silence. The base fits in one of the air vents which has a powerful magnet. Then there is a thin steel plate that sticks on your phone or inside the protective case (I put mine inside my case0. One disadvantage is if I have the heat on I am afraid my phone will overheat, also you can only mount it in a car air vent or similar structure.
I have a different but similar phone holder. The adhesive worked fine on my textured dash board. I was surprised but it's been there for a year or so with no problem.
If you want a phone mount for your car I have the iottie with wireless charging you can mount just about anywhere or on any surface. I love it

As an truck driver, we have something like this in truck stops.
(1)the magnet is stronger than the magic mount sold in Walmart.
(2)Put it on an phone case.
(3) there's way more vibration in an semi. I had never had it fall down due to bumps.

Does the conductive charger still work
many of those kind of devices have a metal disk that fits between the case and the phone that you use to stick to a magnet. makes me wonder if you mounted the part that is supposed to go on the back of the phone to the car and used a metal disk if it would stay. the magnet seemed to be pretty strong.
Essentially identical in design and size to the Nite-Ize Steelie which I've been using for months. Love it. Holds firm and has never been an issue. Phone magnet size is just enough to let ya know it's there. Hasn't caused me a single issue. 10/10 imo.
My wife and I have been using a Scosche MagicMount for years, we ran across it at BestBuy. It is magnetic but only the dash mount has the magnet, the plate that attaches to the phone or case is not magnetic and has a really strong connection. You would consider the MagicMount plate to be "ultra thin" compared to Fastball. We use the dash mount version which is adhesive but they have suction versions as well if you don't want a permanent mount on your dash. I highly recommend the Scosche mount. The price is around $17-$20. Well worth the price.
I like how strong the magnet is. But I like that mine sits between my phone and my case, so no bump. I'll stick with mine.
I got one on ebay that's the same but the part on your phone is just a thin metal disc. I love it.
It is a bit thick, but to get a curved magnetic surface like that it can only get so thin. You could just put that base on a phone cover and just swap out the covers as needed, though that's its own sort of downside.
Only way I’d want that thick backing on my phone, if they made a pop socket you could use when you’re not attaching it to the dash. Definitely too thick without offering any benefit unless you’re in the car😞

I have a steelie which is essentially the same thing. 3M adhesive. I have it on a slightly textured curved surface and it’s fine. The steelie phone thing is a little smaller than that but they make a three part one as well with a thing metal disc that magnets to the thicker convex magnet and then finally to the ball. I use mine on heavy equipment at work and just magnet it to that.
I've seen one similar to this that has a much flatter magnet that's about the size of a half dollar and thickness of quarter and the base goes on your air vent. It seemed to work pretty well and didn't wobble or fall off even when driving on some of the bumpy ass roads down here. This one looks like it would be just about perfect if it weren't for that rather thick magnet on the back of the phone.
Looks pretty cool. I have a similar mount but it doesn't hold it as well. Unfortunately, the deal breaker for me would be the thickness of the attachment on the phone itself. However, for people that don't mind something like a pop socket it would probably be just fine.
Is the textured surfaces even an issue? Even after letting it settle for 24 hrs?

They should just make a second knob or two to make a triangle on the back of the phone so that it doesn't rock back and forth when users try to type on a flat surface.
Seems like this would be great for an extra tablet I have, to keep in the kitchen for recipes and videos while cooking, or as GPS for a road trip. If you ever do a follow up, I'd be interested to see how well they hold 7-10inch tablets.
Always use alcohol to clean any surface to apply adhesives to especially in cars where you might have used product in your car like Armerall!
A few drops of hand sanitizer and a glasses cleaning cloth does the trick. ;)

Would this work with a case on your phone? I always use otter box ?
If you have something like an Otterbox Defender, the kind with the thin, flexible outer covering, then no it would not work well (nothing sticks to the covering for long). You'd be better off getting the kind of mount where you stick a thin metal plate on the inside of the case (the hard plastic inner case) and then the phone will "stick" to the magnetic mount.
I bought one that the thing you have on the back of your phone is on the ball and I have a flat metal disk under my case. It worked well... but the phone was infront of my vent and it would overheat when I had the heater going. With the AC it was happy and great.
You could stick it to a window for a flat surface.
Veva makes a great wallet case that has a magnetic flap that doubles as a stand. I just used that with a decent mountable magnet in my car. As long as you don't place the phone with the "hinge" on the bottom, the phone doesn't move at all.

I have something like that but the ring on the phone is not magnetic, the base is. the problem is that when i do wireless charging, my phone gets hot. I didnt want to damage my note 8 to i never use that case with the ring on it anymore. Im sure with this product, the magnet is too big to wireless charge anyway
I use the Steelie. Same concept but the magnet on the phone is about half the thickness of the fast ball. And the base of the steelie ball is round not square. I would say the actual ball is smaller as well. Purchased mine at Lowes and I love it.
My husband saw this on TV and wanted me to get him one so I wanted to see some reviews. Great review, by the way, very informative. I personally think, however, that Fastball has way too many cons and I prefer the mount that I got as a Christmas gift. It is the Universal Dashboard car mount. Pros: it attaches to any surface on your car with a pretty strong suction cup (no adhesive to attach to phone or car). The mount has clamps to hold your phone securely and it has a telescopic arm and 360 degree ball head that provide just as much adjust ability as the Fast Ball. To remove the phone from the holder, you just press a button that releases the clamps. Plus, there is no concern about magnets. Cons: I haven't discovered any yet. After watching this review, I'm going to ask my husband if he is sure he wants this one or one like mine.
Does it come with extra adhesive?
I got an other mag mount at Walmart in the auto department and it was a far cry slimmer. The mount was similar in installation in the car but the phone part was only a few millimeters thick. And I drove hundreds of miles with out it moving. Unfortunately I don't remember the name.
This could be really useful for dash cams or radar detectors... any idea if those would be affected by the magnet?

how do u take it off
this is almost identical to the mount i use, except the brand i purchased has a razor thin phone plate. it also removes the magnet from the phone plate and keeps it on the ball so you dont have a magnet on your phone/pocket at all times. if you search for "VAVA phone mount" you should find it easily.
I got the magna mount by ONN at Walmart for $5.88 the base goes into your air vent and they provide to super thin metal strips for your phone one rectangle and one a circular disks that stick to your phone onder your case of your phone and it works great except you have to use one of your airvents.
How can you remove the thing if you want to put it in other phone
We use ours on the textured rounded dash in our car just fine also the glue i would say works at least through 2 removal and replace before getting a new sticky pad on it probably more but ive only moved mine twice... the con point is price i think its more like a 6-8 dollar deal
