That was my first big amp when I was15. I got it used with the tall 2-15 horn cabinet for$350.00 used in the early 70s. I am 62! I was in high school. I used a Y-cord to blend the fuzz with the clean. I almost went deaf from the horn!!!! Great find! Enjoy!
Thank you for posting this! My buddy sent me a picture of the same head and matching cab at a yard sale near his house. He got it for $150. I picked it up it up tomorrow and can’t wait to crank this sucker.
great demo thanks I had a Later Version (Series 400) back in 81 to 83 Used a 79 Big Muff and MXR Dist+ into the "normal channel". Sold the Amp in 1983...
I had one for 2 years with the 6 X 12" speaker cabinet. Damn thing rocked for sure, it was the last 2 years of high school and now I wear hearing aids, what can I say. Just 3 guys making a lot of noise, and we amped up the drums so he could keep. Baseman had a 200 watt Kustom Amp pushing 4 X 18" speakers and just kept up. I would be a player for one again if the original speaker cabinet was available, well maybe, if my twin took a crap. Did not use the fuz had one with a boost on the floor to drive more volume and distortion.
It's so bad, it's GOOD! Definitely some uniqueness with the tones, but then you have a way of making anything sound awesome! Moral of story, don't overlook any equipment! Awesome stuff!
I bought one new in my junior year of high school in 1971 with a 4 x 12 matching speaker cab, $600. It was bullet proof and I did everything I could to overdrive it. It was very very loud, to loud for clubs but high school gyms it was perfect. So after 2 years of blowing my ears out sitting 2 feet in front of it, just to day I got fitted for my third set of hearing aids...true story. Party on and take care of your ears.
Man, I had one of those back in the day. When I ordered the ADA MP-1 and Power amp back when they came out I received my MP-1 but the power amp was back ordered for several weeks so I ran my MP-1 through the clean channel of that silly head.
Great find!! I'm always on the hunt for cheap under-appreciated gear on Craigslist. Crate Vintage Club amps can be had for $200-300 - amazing sounding tube amps. Got two of them. I picked up a mid-80's solid-state Marshall Master Lead Combo for $50 - the guy didn't know it just needed new filter caps - and it sounds great! I also have Yamaha B-100 bass head that I got practically for free, and recently got a early 90's Randall RG100ES for $120. Love the cheap gear!!!
The older v-series crates with the celestion speaker are still some of the absolute best used tube amp deals out there, got a v58 and a v1512 myself, also the rivera-era solid state fenders are surprisingly good and the long-pan reverb is fantastic
Thanks Man! I had one in the early 70s and never got a sound I liked from the effects side. I just maxed out the clean channel with a LP Deluxe. Worked pretty well.
If you were to have told me that song was recorded with some boutique fuzz into some boutique amp I’d have believed you. I have a few peavey amps from the 70-90s and this one is next one my list.
Hi Michael, for a few years now I have been confusing you with Benn Jordan. I was always so impressed with your range, everything from vintage Peavey to modern dance music production 😂😂😂
A dude (that i bought a vintage traynor amp from) told me he dropped his peavey classic down 2 flights of stairs, and he thought it was ruined for sure. he plugged it in and it worked perfectly fine! XP i saw a joke once on a peavey forum "if a nuclear holocaust were to happen, the only things that will survive are cockroaches, Keith Richards and Peavey amps" XD
@@BigHairyGuitars I've got the peavey mark 4 bass head, and it fell out of the trailer one day when a door flew open. Bounced a couple of times but still worked fine albeit with a dented corner....peavey built their amps to withstand a nuclear blast in those days!
great Demo, match that amp with a Tall Peavey 412 of the same era. Much like my very first Peavey Musician Amp - Series 400 , this particular one is probably made around 1970-72...
I disagree. I kinda thought that a lot of times it sounded like a ZVex Fuzz Factory plugged directly in a audio interface without an impulse response. :)
Alright maybe I'm off about the Boss HM, played with one 15 years ago, my memory might be fuzzy, pun intended. I'd be curious to hear this with a wall of sound 3 plugin on it.
i got a peavey 400 series bass amp and it smells musty, probably just like the amp you have, but man the thing works like it's new! i love peavey! their gear is solid, great sounding and often cheap when yo duo find something!
Imo the clean channel dimed sounded better. "Lead" channel had a terrible bottom end fuzz wise. Sounded like a ripped speaker. That channel would sound better with a bass plugged in imho
I just saw one of these muthas on Craigslist for $150 WITH a Peavey 4-12 cab and footswitch for reverb, fuzzzzzzz, and tremolo...I may have to pounce on it before some other maniacal guitarist gets it!
Fuzz is spitty cheesy, sounds like a broken Amp, useless, but the clean channel dimed sounds "quite" good (hint: "natural" distortion). You should add a plain distortion pedal to boost it and you will be surprised.
I love this amp. Character that speaks for itself
I can almost see the Black Keys recording with this... and getting a grammy
Josh homme uses these amps

Should do another video on these vintage peaveys!
That fuzz is unreal - I dig it!
Thanks for the demo! Great playing bro. Love the sabbath
Perfect amp for the Jack White, Black Keys, Gary Clark Jr. and Queens of the Stone Age fans. Not exactly me, but it's interesting.
Josh Homme does use these amps

The first person I ever saw play loud electric guitar was playing a 1974 hardtail Strat through one of these. Really takes me back.
It does have a unique tone. I can imegine it being use for some album.
I know this is an older vid, but damn this thing sounds good!!! I'm looking for one right now!!!!
That reverb is unbelievable
Man your channel is awesome!
Great ideas and pure sound!
Cheers from Brazil!

i really like the fuzz, it is kind of big for a "fuzz pedal" :)
haha
Big Game -fx builds a pedal that is that fuzz
Love your videos, can´t wait to see more.
It's so bad, it's GOOD! Definitely some uniqueness with the tones, but then you have a way of making anything sound awesome! Moral of story, don't overlook any equipment! Awesome stuff!
this is fantastic.
Sounds Killer! : )

😱😱😱😱
This is an incredible review. Hilarious and you shred
I really like your 'toan'. Rock on.

It's Awesome!
U have a nice touch!!!! I love it
I use a a Peavey 400 bass,(same series) for my bass, and I really like how it sounds. Only cost me $80 too.
Never ever got a better overdriven sound then crankin my series 300! I'm also half deaf now, but fuck it!
What's up with that fuzz. I need it. Too sick
Low gain reminds me of BB King.
BTW Randy Rhoads used a solid state Peavey before he joined Ozzy. I think he used a Peavey Standard?
Thanks Man! I had one in the early 70s and never got a sound I liked from the effects side. I just maxed out the clean channel with a LP Deluxe. Worked pretty well.
YES! The clean side cranked is really great!
How is that reverb not 70S AWESOMENESS?!?!
Yeah, I'm with you. The more time I spent with it, the more awesome it became to me! :) I was a bit quick to judge it in the video.
If you were to have told me that song was recorded with some boutique fuzz into some boutique amp I’d have believed you. I have a few peavey amps from the 70-90s and this one is next one my list.
N P I’ve had 2 different Peavey Musician heads, and they both were super super cool and fuzzy! 😎
Isn't that the Randy Rhoads amp he used in the Quiet Riot days?
Hi Michael, for a few years now I have been confusing you with Benn Jordan. I was always so impressed with your range, everything from vintage Peavey to modern dance music production 😂😂😂
Dude...you about dropped that Peavey to the ground before playing it.
It probably would have put a hole in my floor, but I'm sure you can hit it with a sledge hammer, and it will work fine. HA!!!

That on-board fuzz is screaming for some low tuned stoner rock!!
why do i like I like this shitty amp so much
For a solid state, It almost has a tubey sound to the clean channel ?
Which model was Randy Rhoads' big old Peavy? In his QR days?
Are you familiar with the Peavey Mace/Deuce amps? They are hybrid solid state pre- amp with 6l6 power section.
You should get a Peavey Mace/Deuce.
It is fucking good great amp! Thr Sound it`s 70`s like.
Didn't Randy Rhoads use that?
Laugh all you want, the mix works and works well
Do the Peavey Classic 50/50 El84 power amp!!!
great Demo, match that amp with a Tall Peavey 412 of the same era. Much like my very first Peavey Musician Amp - Series 400 , this particular one is probably made around 1970-72...
I've got the musician 400. Pulled it out after 20 years. Pots NEED CLEANING!!!!!! Thought it sounded ok before you turned everything up.
That junky FUZZ is awesome
It sounds like a Boss Heavy Metal plugged directly in a audio interface without an impulse response.
I tried. I just sounded terrible... in a different kind of way. HA!
haha Alright, I give up!
get them ears checked baw

Sounds like my first amp...my dads stereo. :P
would have been interesting to use it with a bass
Imo the clean channel dimed sounded better. "Lead" channel had a terrible bottom end fuzz wise. Sounded like a ripped speaker. That channel would sound better with a bass plugged in imho
Well, sounds better than the Runt 50. :P
That would look killer on my pedal board,
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

This amp needs to be added to helix, fractal, modelers!
you could do a mean cosplay as Negan from the Walking Dead :)
Oh man! 2 months late!!!! Great idea!
not bad ..
PROFILE IT!
Profile it!
I did! :). bighairyprofiles.com/products/classic-combo-pack
I thought you were going to show that it was crap, well fooled me.
Well, I really liked the amp. I think it's a weiner...
This is an a example of how not to do a gear review when high.
That's more square wave than my aging ears can handle. But kinda cool.
Lynyrd skynrd sound.

I've had worse tones out of a THR10 :-/
Alot of doom and sludge guy shove a high gain fuzz in the front of these ss peavey's
If you didnt get it for free you payed too much for it. I always wondered how terrible they were aaand Fairies wear boots ruined aaaaaahhhhhhhh!!
Fuzz gives off too much of a spitting sound.
