    Another of Terry's and Michael's super simple and effective mods. Reflecting, I've spent ages making a brass sheet servo mounts only to find afterwards that a simple bit of double sided tape would have worked just as well. Go simple wherever possible is something I need to remember. And great to see the Shay in action, so smooth!

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Steve! Locos that come with RC installed all use metal brackets. They are bulletproof proof. Michael used double sided tape on my fist RC installation and after being run a lot it doesn’t show any signs of breaking down. And when it eventually does just replace with another piece! The Scotch tape I used was something I decided to try. It is heavy duty and waterproof. It sticks more like glue. I bet I will be a very very long time before it needs replacing.

      Keep It Simple Stupid! :) The tape also helps with Terrys "No modifications" bit too. No holes drilled with tape.

    I would check that the partition between water and r/c gear actually reaches the top. On several tenders we found a 1/8" to 1/4" gap, which allowed water to slop over into the r/c. And drill a hole in the bottom of the r/c space so any water will drain out!

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Fred. I had thought of this. I don’t fill the water all the way to as much as it can take. But your suggestion to drill a hole in the RC compartment is a good one and I’ll do that! Thanks. 😊

    Seems a perfect engine to drive via the reverser due to the limited speeds. Very nice modification, especially with how well the electronics tuck into the bunker/tank space. With servos on RC live steam in general, I almost wonder if it'd be possible to have linkage attach to a figure's arm - Would need a roomy cab but it seems like something Lionel would've done, had they ventured into this style of live steam.
    Looks fantastic with those coaches, too!

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have toyed with the idea of an animated figure now and then, but I think the design would be best created from the ground up as part of the overall design of the loco. Just as Lionel would have done, as you suggest. 😊 It would be cool though!

      Thanks John. The trade off is using AAA batteries with 1100 milliamps, versus AA batteries with 2400 milliamps. But with only one micro servo to operate it won’t be too bad. I’ll just keep them charged between sessions.

    While watching this I thought would be neat to get the smallest metal gear servo could find, build a scale wood load and put the servo in there. Not sure if the figures arm moves but be really cool to run the rod though the arm so looked like the figure was moving it.

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks

      Hi Philip. The figure’s arm does move, but I could bot quite work out a good angle to make it all happen. Your idea to hide the servo in a wood pile is a good one.

    I hope to add RC to my Mamod, eventually. Ive just bought a butane burner which will help with constant pressure in the boiler instead of tablets that slowly fizzle out after 5 minutes and adjusting the reverser is constantly different with the lowering flames.

    Nicely done, I have heard from several people who have done exactly this type of R/C control system before in other Accucraft model locomotives. And it seems to work just fine. I do think at some point you will have to attach the reach rod to the Johnson bar, rather than wrap the wire around it as you did.

    Truly a marvelous enjin
    And im pretty sure realistically
    They would run the engine so that the steam engine and shaft is on the outside of a corner
    To not compress it to improve performance
    And also im pretty sure diamond stacks where used on coal too
    Coal also needs spark arrestors
    85s is in his smokebox
    There is so much chuncks of coal wedged in those things
    I only saw 1 spark leave 85
    And that was when we had funky coal and they had to assist the coal with wood while winding the blower after he was put to bed

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I looked deeper into it. The early locos used diamond stacks for spark arresting until they came up with deeper smoke boxes. I don’t like the look of the diamond stack as much though. On this loco it is huge and bulky.

    Single servo control is possible because of the piston valve valve gear. Speed and direction on one control. If you had true Stephenson's valve gear in the locomotive, you would need two servos and I speak from experience in saying this is vastly more complex. Easy to run the as you have it , and I'm glad you're doing operations with the locomotive.

      @@Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks I have fully functional Stephenson's valve gear on my Shay and it is radio controlled, the only one that I know of that is. I do require a two servo system to do it, but all (5) of my live steamers use that. My Shay 'engine' is the Mark II version of the Catatonk Shay built by Mike Chaney. I never bought the locomotive but had the engine assembly built to order. It has been thoroughly rebuilt by Bill Allen to include ball bearings in the main bearings AND all four cams! The locomotive itself is a 14-15 ton Shay, scratchbuilt. This includes the "tee" boiler and trucks. As of this writing the locomotive is over 15 years old and going strong, capable of switching and logging operations, all by R/C.

    Very cool. I do not know much yet about live steam g scale but I was curious about a throttle? Is that the upper swing lever I see to the left of the reverse? Again I do not know how adjustable the throttles are and the speed you have selected is nice for your layout but with a throttle control could one come to a gradual stop , or am I over thinking it? I think futaba makes even smaller micro servos if you have another channel. But very cool video it shows off the shay well. You should let accucraft know for sure. Have a great new year too.

    • @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks
      @Terrys-Steam-and-Bricks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lyndon. Thanks for your questions! The steam regulators on scale live steam produce nowhere near as fine control as you get with electric trains. Adding a servo to the steam regulator (throttle) would not be worth the effort of finding a way to add the extra equipment and wires and no doubt would involve some cutting and drilling. And it would be rather more visible.
