I'm new the the whole X series, with this being my first played. I play Elite Dangerous and I must say I thought that was hard to get used to XD. I've watched all three of your vids in this series and I must say I'm enjoying it. I've just purchased and downloaded X4, so time to jump in. Keep up these videos, they are great

I'm what I might consider a veteran at Elite Dangerous and I do really enjoy that game (3.3 patch in less than a week, can't wait), but this is really a breath of fresh air and a game I want to "git gud" at. I like thats theres so much going on and so much to do and get your hands on, and I like that a lot. But thanks to grayduster and these videos I'm slowly getting it. I've watched all 3 (and now I see episode 4, yay!) a few times. He makes things make sense compared to other TH-camrs I've tried to watch and get info from, they just haven't worked for me. So I'm about to watch ep 4 and hopefully buy a ship and send it to the mission for the big station thing XD

Well I've done a few repair missions (my favourite missions so far), my docking bay is nearly complete and I'm about to buy some mining ships to get some passive income. I really am enjoying it. I will take a look at some of the previous games, anyone in particular? I don't mind aged games, I still play SNES games XD. It's what the game does for me, graphics are just an extra bonus.
Same here, Elite Dangerous Player since Start, have played and play NMS, but this is my first X game. Looking forward to get some great content. ObsidianAnt has also covered X4 btw

Just starting to build a fleet, although sometimes I do feel myself sat doing nothing, wondering what to do next. @Another Agent And more importantly, Aldrin Springblossoms are very fast and are effective all-around non-combat ship. The problem is its shape, which causes nasty instant death collisions when undocking while other ships are docked adjacent to it.
I put the antimatter cells in my starting ship while I flew a Quasar. Then, not having mastered move commands yet, I got it to follow me out there. The Boron guy reacted to my ship first, telling me it didn't have the "equipment". Then the Elite arrived, and he said I should evacuate the ship. I wanted to save the captain for later but hadn't figured out crew commands yet, so I tried to get her to leave the ship. She couldn't. So I sent her back to the nearest dock, meaning to change places with her. Then I got attacked by a pirate Kestrel, which the pirate abandoned. Since there was now an abandoned ship at the "tear" site, the Boron guy started the experiment. My Elite--halfway across the sector--blew up, and I got the station. But my poor Captain was dead. lol
Thank you for the excellent videos. My first dive into the X series was/is Rebirth. I am just getting used to that game and building my empire. While I'm waiting for X4 to get some more patches and content, your videos make me feel like I could manage and have fun with the game. Your content is very much appreciated.

I've watched the 1st 3 vids in the series. I think they're terrific. I'm on the fence about buying the game because I've never played a simulation game before and on't know if this type of game is for me. I'm thinking I will buy it and if/when I do, I hope I enjoy it as much as I'm enjoying your vids. I'm quite certain they'll go a long way towards flattening out the learning curve. Thank you.
A few things that might help people following this guide: You get the 1M6basic dock blueprint automatically, so no need to buy the half million one until later. At this point in the game you just need any dock so you are able to get onto the station and continue the mission. You can switch it out later for a better dock once you have more cash. You dont have to fly up to a constructor and you dont have to transfer funds to the constructor in order to construct the dock. Do all this via the plan menu (right click the station and choose plan on the map). Bottom right of that interface will have a way to assign a constructor and also an interface for funding the building. As long as you have a few ships flying around the map and/or some satellites deployed it should be easy to locate a constructor on the map somewhere (right click a constructor on the map and choose select). Dont blow all your cash on a bigger ship at this stage as you have a large claimable ship placed in your path if you continue a bit further with the main mission Another reason why not to spend a lot of cash on the PHQ at an early stage is that hostiles will attack the station and harass ships coming to and leaving it. You are unlikely to have any defence blueprints at this point, so hold off your big PHQ upgrade projects until you have a way of defending what you will build.
I actually purchased a cheap ship to do that mission for the station and got it there, I didn't think about it until after I got there and had a cheap pilot in the ship. I thought, I'll just tell the pilot to space suit over to my ship... nope. After a minute of messing around with it, the quest just continued. So, I gave distance and saluted the pilot for his bravery. :p . (Also, "That's No Moon" was the achievement) Now I am trying to find a dock for the next part I'm on. Typing this while watching, so I'm kind of hoping you cover that because I don't know which station has blueprints!
I saw a steam that had a Egosoft rep on it and he hinted that the pilot was supposed to be sacrificed on this quest (Cohncarnage 'Freah Run' youtube series if anyone needs proof)

Veterans will know what I mean ROFL, the calvary is over, thank you Egosoft, it was the godamn time !

You can buy multiple ships at a time when ya select add to shopping list you can than select another ship type and keep going. I’m still early game and brought four at once for mining. Personally I’m doing at least one miner per resource in order to not be to exploity
You call those Tutorials? Thats Moving Text with no way of stoping so you can calmly read or do stuff. A Tutorial comes from the name Tutor wich means Teacher ... in context it abreviates from Tutoring wich means "To Teach". Those "Tutorials" are basicaly not teaching you anything if you dont have the time to actualy read what they say.
Jonathan Gater the in-game "tutorials" are totally rubbish! I need a 'getting orientated' guide... Atm, I'm pretty much at a total loss what I'm doing! I've flown around a bit but I can't make heads or tails of the trading system! Totally non-intuative!
I found blasting crystals the easiest fastest way to get some starting cash ! farter around for not even 30 minutes and got me a cool 2.3 million credits so i could buy a bigger boat and start exploring with a sense of safety ;)
When on the map you see the little blue double chevron? That's the discoverer ships way point indicator. You can use the mouse to drag that point, and the ship will go right to it.
Ive been following 3 play through and I'll be honest, none are as informative, educational, show you the in-depth tricks and options on how to complete as well as yours do. Cudos If I may suggest one thing, try plugging an Xbox controller into your computer, and pretend it's the flight stick for the ship, flying becomes a million times easier and in general more fun!
Also buy the other components - as the crafting window only shows when you have at least one of the items on you, I always try and keep one of everything, especially when new to the game.
It should get patched, i get that "free money" is cool, but that's just super cheesy and pointless. Might as well just use a cheat or endless money mod or whatever.
@@_Daio_ that's not totally true. They nerfed the easy money dodge by completely removing Sedatives from the traders, but you still have a chance at getting them from Lock Boxes and Data Vaults. I picked some up from a Data Vault tonight and made some First Aid Kits with it.
If you just enter the build menu after the station appears you should already have a dock blueprint there, without the need to buy an extra one. I did the same as you and bought one only to realise there is already one there when i went to build it.
I wasn't sure if that was due to me scanning or not - good to know it's there by default. I still like the upgraded version, but now I want the top version instead! :D
I did not have a dock blueprint. I had some others but it would not let me build them without a dock to get resources to the station or something like that. I spent quite a few hours flying around to other stations exploring around for blueprints.
FYI (Once you research hacking) You can detonate an EMP bomb on any station module and if you scan all the data leaks it leaves you get the module blueprints for free. This can also be done with data leak missions (you will fail the mission but no rep loss)
@@grayduster yes I flyed by my self to the position. Left the ship with my space suit and moved with it to the second position. After the station was showing up I called my second ship to pick me up. I had also some trouble with pirates in the beginning.
Good vids Mate! On the "plan build" holo, there is a "build status" and a "confirm module changes" button. (bottom right of the screen) What is that and what's for?
Purple ones are most common, blue, yellow and white are less common. I've sold a bunch of Crystal's for upwards of 2mil after spending an hour or so harvesting. Use a small maneuverable ship, as the asteroids do spin. These do not take up cargo room so do as much as you want at one time, then sell them at the station traders all at once.
Enjoying your tutorial series so far...Although I didnt get how you assigned your construction ship...Do you hire it first through comms like in x3? Also those high tech traders etc for your build materials, was they just AI traders filling your order or was they part of your empire?
You need to be able to see a construction ship on the map. Go to the manage build screen, click assign builder on the right, right click the construction ship on the map, select. Done. And yep, as long as you give the station enough money, NPC traders will fill the orders.
When you boost by mistake, the Backspace key will stop you almost instantly. Good thing to map to a controller. It's nearly the most used command for me in the game. My problem is not understanding how to rotate parts. No one else seems to either. If it's impossible, then it seems there are only two places to put parts on the station 280 deg from each other. Not very flexible design options.
You can rotate parts by right click and drag - they'll only attach when they're in the right orientation for a node, but whilst rotating, I think you can hold shift, control or alt (can't remember which) to have it snap to 5/10 degree incremental rotation for alignment
Found it, it was in the next sector. I am guessing then, this thing moves. You can see it even in fog of war, it's almost invisible. You got to be in the sector it's in to see it.
I learned a lot from this video so thank you. I bought a mining ship and rode a long with them but every time we get blown up by bad guys. How can I fix this?
i guess change the default behaviour while meet with pirates from attack them to escape from them. That should do it i think. Behaviour screen you find with enter/ship info/click on mining ship/information/then tab behaviour. Good luck with this
No - I'm having to rebalance the gamma a bit, due to the capture method being a massive workaround to get around the fact you can't just use OBS normally to capture X4 :D
Hi Grayduster, your making wanna dig out x3 again... the only reason I stopped playing that game is cuz I Killed my old pc with that game... I am wondering what ur thoughts are on a decent gaming pc, what are you running ? Now for some game questions, do you have to use jump gates or do they have warp engines as x3 had? I seen that the game actually offers you a hq partially built, Wondering if you actually Have to accept that or can skip all that or Move the hq to somewhere else eg another system etc? you asked how to Rotate... if place it there you want it then you can hold your right mouse button then drag it.. you can also rotate it before you place it too, then you must place it there is shows green the do then same to rotate with right mouse button...
Looks like that hole in the middle is the sock for the S ship. It has one slot. Disclaimer, I don't own this game I'm just looking to see if it's worth getting.
How do i build a factory? Before i drop all my cr messing up this factory settings mission. Is there anything special i need or just a docking bay and some storage? The game is very vague on how to do things.
as far as I know, you buy a plot (map screen) and construct it just like the player HQ, but I'd take a save just in case - I haven't done a factory build mission yet

If you buy a ship from the wharf, it'll already have a pilot, if you want to automine. Your starter ship doesn't have anyone other than you on it, so you might want to hire a captain for your own ship.
When you get out of your seat, he'll take over. At that point, you can treat your ship like another one of your owned ships, and tell the captain to do things even while you're stood behind him (or while you're on a station). Like moving goods around, flying to locations, etc. We'll get the ability to teleport soon, so you don't always need to be on that ship

@@grayduster ok this Problem is solved. It works now with swapping captains from my miner ships, they had a 3* rating. But with this came another problem. I did a mistake by swapping and now 1 miner has a 0* captain so cannot mine anymore... how can I increase the rating?
Looks like the first aid method has been nerfed... I stopped at a bunch of stations and nobody sold all three items... so it's not nearly as worth messing with.
Annoyingly enough, I've gotten through the player owned station mission, instructed a ship to build my dock only for the entire universe to be out of hull parts. Basically the building is stuck.
I can't get the HQ mission to start for the life of me. Don't know what to do. I started with the first option of the new game, and I keep scanning like a mad man, and nothing.
Fly onto the main ring highway, watch your mission offers. When you get a leak mission (data leak), take it, and do that in scan mode. When you scan the leak (instead of repairing it), I think it's fixed that you'll get the Boron voice popup
@@grayduster I got a mission from a female alien names Boso Ta. She wants me to deliver some anti-matter cells with a new ship to a place. I got to the part where it was almost there, but my ship got attacked by pirates, and since I'm still new to this, it got captured before I could order it to just fuck away from there (cuz the ship was being flown by one of my crew). Is that the mission?
I can not build the Dock, Ihave assigned a construction ship, transferred some credits and npcs have brought enough goods, but the Construction progress stays at 0.0 % Is this a bug?

I bought a large mineral mining ship from argon and set it to auto mine but it just drifts around the system doing nothing, i have medium sized mining ships working just fine in the same system. Can the large ships not auto mine?
Nethicron I wish the game indicated that, I have an autotrader that just sits there turning back and forth but not doing anything or going anywhere, he’s I think only one star though.

For the life of me i can not find a antimatter cell factory. all i can find is a antimatter cell converter factory. my game's map looks totally different, with the stations are located in different positions.
If you mean player HQ, you'll need to scan a few hidden signals on the stations until the talkative Boron pops up. The guild missions pop up once you start getting reputation with the factions
Undock and turn on your shipscanner by clicking shift+2 by default. Then scan the whole station by flying close to it. You will notice soon enough some radio static. Just follow the sound and eventually you will see sparks. Just slow to a halt and check around the spot the sound is the loudest. You could also see a glowing bolt. The last thing is giving you something. The sparks will give you a conversation with someone who will probably give a mission. The first time you will do this it always will give the mission for the station. Just listen to it and start the mission. Good luck finding it.
Try a repair/leak mission - you'll be scanning the stations as part of that, and a small particle effect will show up - audio to be intercepted. If it's a boron saying hi, you're on the right track
@@jackzeng7096 You'll find a ot of these transmissions if you look around stations using the scanner. I think the first one you find will automatically be to get the mission -at least for me it was the first one I've found, and as they're quite common I doubt it was simply due to luck.
Episode 3 and you have already gone wayyyyyyyyy past what I can follow or understand. Your previous experience with X games is obviously a big help, but it's not helping you talk through it from first principles... Please do this! You need to take your views with you...
You need to have one within range. So either in range of a satellite of yours or fly until you have one in range of you. Go to the manage build screen, click assign, then select the ship in range and it'll get assigned to build (you need one of the XL constructor ships in range)
I think I will buy this game, but this horrible UI fonts needs to go. I can't stand the childish feels it resonates. As soon as it gets patched or a mod is out to change the font, I will buy this game, yes. EDIT: It suits the ship flight screen, but the maps, orders, context menus etc. are unbearable with that font.
The last space game I played for a longer period of time was Freelancer, I feel like a chimp when playing this one, although at least I can perform basic actions, unlike some other space spreadsheet game...

Great tutorial. Can you make a tutorial about "Crew" and Crew stats. The game does a poor job explaining the crew benefits.

I found blasting crystals the easiest fastest way to get some starting cash ! farter around for not even 30 minutes and got me a cool 2.3 million credits so i could buy a bigger boat and start exploring with a sense of safety ;)

When on the map you see the little blue double chevron?
That's the discoverer ships way point indicator. You can use the mouse to drag that point, and the ship will go right to it.
I was enjoying the radio chatter at the end of some distant piracy happening and the victim telling them to basically fuck off.
Ive been following 3 play through and I'll be honest, none are as informative, educational, show you the in-depth tricks and options on how to complete as well as yours do. Cudos
If I may suggest one thing, try plugging an Xbox controller into your computer, and pretend it's the flight stick for the ship, flying becomes a million times easier and in general more fun!

FYI, not every trader sells all those components for the first aid trick.
Andir this becomes much easier once you research teleporting :-p
Also buy the other components - as the crafting window only shows when you have at least one of the items on you, I always try and keep one of everything, especially when new to the game.
It should get patched, i get that "free money" is cool, but that's just super cheesy and pointless. Might as well just use a cheat or endless money mod or whatever.

@@_Daio_ that's not totally true. They nerfed the easy money dodge by completely removing Sedatives from the traders, but you still have a chance at getting them from Lock Boxes and Data Vaults. I picked some up from a Data Vault tonight and made some First Aid Kits with it.
If you just enter the build menu after the station appears you should already have a dock blueprint there, without the need to buy an extra one. I did the same as you and bought one only to realise there is already one there when i went to build it.
I wasn't sure if that was due to me scanning or not - good to know it's there by default. I still like the upgraded version, but now I want the top version instead! :D
I did not have a dock blueprint. I had some others but it would not let me build them without a dock to get resources to the station or something like that. I spent quite a few hours flying around to other stations exploring around for blueprints.
@@AndirHon interesting, I don't know how I got the blueprint then, but it wasn't from scanning i only scanned once and that was to start the mission
Correction, I did have dock. I'm just terrible at seeing the different categories in the build screen.

FYI (Once you research hacking) You can detonate an EMP bomb on any station module and if you scan all the data leaks it leaves you get the module blueprints for free. This can also be done with data leak missions (you will fail the mission but no rep loss)

@@grayduster yes I flyed by my self to the position. Left the ship with my space suit and moved with it to the second position. After the station was showing up I called my second ship to pick me up. I had also some trouble with pirates in the beginning.
Good vids Mate! On the "plan build" holo, there is a "build status" and a "confirm module changes" button. (bottom right of the screen) What is that and what's for?
Two words... asteroid Crystal's. Fly around asteroid belts, look for shiny, shoot said shiny, profit.
Purple ones are most common, blue, yellow and white are less common. I've sold a bunch of Crystal's for upwards of 2mil after spending an hour or so harvesting. Use a small maneuverable ship, as the asteroids do spin. These do not take up cargo room so do as much as you want at one time, then sell them at the station traders all at once.

Enjoying your tutorial series so far...Although I didnt get how you assigned your construction ship...Do you hire it first through comms like in x3? Also those high tech traders etc for your build materials, was they just AI traders filling your order or was they part of your empire?
You need to be able to see a construction ship on the map. Go to the manage build screen, click assign builder on the right, right click the construction ship on the map, select. Done. And yep, as long as you give the station enough money, NPC traders will fill the orders.

When you boost by mistake, the Backspace key will stop you almost instantly. Good thing to map to a controller. It's nearly the most used command for me in the game. My problem is not understanding how to rotate parts. No one else seems to either. If it's impossible, then it seems there are only two places to put parts on the station 280 deg from each other. Not very flexible design options.
You can rotate parts by right click and drag - they'll only attach when they're in the right orientation for a node, but whilst rotating, I think you can hold shift, control or alt (can't remember which) to have it snap to 5/10 degree incremental rotation for alignment
Will tell you may even like the plot for the station to buy?

Found it, it was in the next sector. I am guessing then, this thing moves. You can see it even in fog of war, it's almost invisible. You got to be in the sector it's in to see it.
I learned a lot from this video so thank you. I bought a mining ship and rode a long with them but every time we get blown up by bad guys. How can I fix this?
i guess change the default behaviour while meet with pirates from attack them to escape from them. That should do it i think. Behaviour screen you find with enter/ship info/click on mining ship/information/then tab behaviour. Good luck with this

No - I'm having to rebalance the gamma a bit, due to the capture method being a massive workaround to get around the fact you can't just use OBS normally to capture X4 :D
those M size ships are huge compared to the elite vanguard. I wish there's more room in the larger ships other than the bridge.

@@grayduster LOL its called a XXX LARGE collection of custom content, Including modded ships, along with about 50 Stations and somewhere around 500 ships or so and playing it alot... yes it was a while back.

you asked how to Rotate... if place it there you want it then you can hold your right mouse button then drag it.. you can also rotate it before you place it too, then you must place it there is shows green the do then same to rotate with right mouse button...
Right click and drag works for horizontal, yes. It's vertical rotation I can't seem to do

How do i build a factory? Before i drop all my cr messing up this factory settings mission. Is there anything special i need or just a docking bay and some storage? The game is very vague on how to do things.
as far as I know, you buy a plot (map screen) and construct it just like the player HQ, but I'd take a save just in case - I haven't done a factory build mission yet
Is there any way to retrieve probes (Satellites, Nav or Resourse) if you already (mis)placed one in a location that you didn't need or want? Thanks in advance, guys. :-)

You make them :) Reassign a captain/pilot from your ship to the station (when you're landed there), select Manager as the role

If you buy a ship from the wharf, it'll already have a pilot, if you want to automine. Your starter ship doesn't have anyone other than you on it, so you might want to hire a captain for your own ship.

When you get out of your seat, he'll take over. At that point, you can treat your ship like another one of your owned ships, and tell the captain to do things even while you're stood behind him (or while you're on a station). Like moving goods around, flying to locations, etc. We'll get the ability to teleport soon, so you don't always need to be on that ship

Check the rating (stars) - too low, and it might not be able to auto-trade.
@@grayduster ok this Problem is solved. It works now with swapping captains from my miner ships, they had a 3* rating. But with this came another problem. I did a mistake by swapping and now 1 miner has a 0* captain so cannot mine anymore... how can I increase the rating?

I don't know how to increase the star rating however you could just buy another captain from any dock :)
Looks like the first aid method has been nerfed... I stopped at a bunch of stations and nobody sold all three items... so it's not nearly as worth messing with.
Annoyingly enough, I've gotten through the player owned station mission, instructed a ship to build my dock only for the entire universe to be out of hull parts. Basically the building is stuck.
If the entire universe is out of hull parts, sounds like there's money to be made!
I can't get the HQ mission to start for the life of me. Don't know what to do. I started with the first option of the new game, and I keep scanning like a mad man, and nothing.
Fly onto the main ring highway, watch your mission offers. When you get a leak mission (data leak), take it, and do that in scan mode. When you scan the leak (instead of repairing it), I think it's fixed that you'll get the Boron voice popup
@@grayduster I got a mission from a female alien names Boso Ta. She wants me to deliver some anti-matter cells with a new ship to a place. I got to the part where it was almost there, but my ship got attacked by pirates, and since I'm still new to this, it got captured before I could order it to just fuck away from there (cuz the ship was being flown by one of my crew). Is that the mission?

I can not build the Dock, Ihave assigned a construction ship, transferred some credits and npcs have brought enough goods, but the Construction progress stays at 0.0 % Is this a bug?
Are you sure you have enough goods? It stays at 0.0 until the goods are supplied (If they're still on the way, that doesn't count)

Lucky you did not have pirates in the main mission. I have 2 or 3 in the area in each run and its really annoying.
I bought a large mineral mining ship from argon and set it to auto mine but it just drifts around the system doing nothing, i have medium sized mining ships working just fine in the same system. Can the large ships not auto mine?
Maybe it needs crew with star ratings to auto mine?
Nethicron I wish the game indicated that, I have an autotrader that just sits there turning back and forth but not doing anything or going anywhere, he’s I think only one star though.
@@grayduster Sorry for the questions but where can I find captains with higher mining skill? The captains in my medium ships are not leveling despite mining for several hours now, and everyone I meet on stations seems to also be noobs.
@@nethicron3088 The best place I've found for crew is docking with large ships flying around and 'permanently borrowing' their nicer crew members :D

If you mean player HQ, you'll need to scan a few hidden signals on the stations until the talkative Boron pops up. The guild missions pop up once you start getting reputation with the factions

How do i get the mission for the station?
Undock and turn on your shipscanner by clicking shift+2 by default. Then scan the whole station by flying close to it. You will notice soon enough some radio static. Just follow the sound and eventually you will see sparks. Just slow to a halt and check around the spot the sound is the loudest. You could also see a glowing bolt. The last thing is giving you something. The sparks will give you a conversation with someone who will probably give a mission. The first time you will do this it always will give the mission for the station. Just listen to it and start the mission. Good luck finding it.

where do you get the mission to get the player base?
Try a repair/leak mission - you'll be scanning the stations as part of that, and a small particle effect will show up - audio to be intercepted. If it's a boron saying hi, you're on the right track

I think the first one you find will automatically be to get the mission -at least for me it was the first one I've found, and as they're quite common I doubt it was simply due to luck.

my prob with building stations is that the horizontal extensions only go in the Z direction, how do I get them to do the X direction?

Episode 3 and you have already gone wayyyyyyyyy past what I can follow or understand. Your previous experience with X games is obviously a big help, but it's not helping you talk through it from first principles... Please do this! You need to take your views with you...

You need to have one within range. So either in range of a satellite of yours or fly until you have one in range of you. Go to the manage build screen, click assign, then select the ship in range and it'll get assigned to build (you need one of the XL constructor ships in range)
I think I will buy this game, but this horrible UI fonts needs to go. I can't stand the childish feels it resonates. As soon as it gets patched or a mod is out to change the font, I will buy this game, yes. EDIT: It suits the ship flight screen, but the maps, orders, context menus etc. are unbearable with that font.
At least it isn't Comic Sans :)
