*You can support the channel with TH-cam Channel Memberships or through Buy Me a Coffee. Never expected, but always appreciated.❤Links in Description!* What a great tune with such a catchy hook! What's next from the Eurythmics?!
The video is inspired by Fellini films. It has things being in places they shouldn't be, hence the cow is in the boardroom and is out of place and then technology is outside in nature. It's supposed to be surreal.
Annie Lennox has a very powerful voice. The Eurythmics had a lot of great hits in the 80's-90's such as "Who's That Girl?", "Right By Your Side", "Here Comes The Rain Again", "Would I Lie To You?", "It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)", "Love Is A Stranger", "Missionary Man" etc. Annie has had a great solo career too with many hits.
Annie was at her breaking point when they wrote this song. Their first band, The Tourists, had broken up. She and Dave had ended their relationship after four years but still lived together and wanted to work together so they formed Eurythmics. Their first album, ‘In the garden’, didn’t do well. They were in debt to their first record label. Dave took out a bank loan to buy equipment and was playing back a synth track he had recorded when Annie became inspired by it and wrote the lyrics. The tinkling sound you hear during the “hold your head up” part is them using old milk bottles in their flat/studio as percussion. The lyrics are about her disillusionment with the music industry after their financial battles with their first record label.
A titanic classic of the '80s (gradually started charting high in Feb.1983) that shook the scene with Annie in her grande iconic 'commanding" image and orange androdynous look in her prime time.'Who's that girl?" is another video that i like from that era.
Was it as late as that? I do remember seeing them in the Glasgow Apollo but I thought it was when I was still at school, or at least still a teenager. Although I think they were still The Tourists the first time I saw them there, so maybe I’m mixing up gigs. I do remember how happy we all were in the crowd when (as The Tourists) they started “I Only Wanna Be With You” - it felt as if they had resurrected it from death by Bay City Rollers. (Which was the height of hypocrisy by us, since we had also happily danced along to the Rollers version just three or four years before.)
The story of how they got their start as a band is wild. Dave Stewart basically went into a local bank and secured a business loan to buy some equipment and pitched the band as such. The finance manager approved the loan, and that was the birth of Eurythmics.
Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart were also in a Pop Rock band named The Tourists. The band were together from 1977 to 1980. Their only hit was a cover of the Dusty Springfield song, “I Only Want To Be With You”. The music video for the song is available for viewing here on TH-cam.
My sister looked so much like Annie Lennox here when this came out, hair and all. I had to cut it every 2 weeks to keep it looking like she wanted it to. Hers was a little spikier on top and she had points in front of her ears, but we all called her Annie Lennox back then! Great song, thanks for reacting to it! We appreciate you!
As others have mentioned, Marilyn Manson did a cover and video of this song that showed the darker side that the Eurythmics probably couldn’t get away with back in the early 80’s. As a teenager back then waiting for an Ozzy or Motley Crue video, this was still creepy, but nothing like Manson’s version!
Thank you! My husband loves this song and I like it too. I couldn't tell you what the video means. It was the age of MTV. I love your face! Give me Dan Vasc and his plain black background. 🤣🤣🤣
This song came out in 1983. The whole album is one of my favorites. The video was totally cool. What does it mean? I don't know. There's a cow, she has a red dot on her forehead. Maybe it has to do with Hinduism. We didn't know. Does it matter? No. It looks cool. It was in keeping with the style of the Eurythmics. It enhanced their image. It looked great on your TV. It looked great at the club. That's all that really mattered to us. We didn't waste time trying to interpret most of these videos. Although there are some music videos that really took away from the song, music videos at the time were a vehicle to break through and gain an audience on MTV. Many are stylistic meant to enhance a band's coolness and not necessarily to help explain the meaning of a song. Trying to figure out what videos meant, what songs meant, what a song's lyrics were before the Internet wasn't worth the effort. If we liked the tune, if the video was cool, if we could sing with the chorus, and if we understood some of the lyrics, that was good enough for most of us. I'm still just learning what some of the songs I loved meant or even what some of the lyrics were.
Here's a legendary Song from the 70's. By Peter Green with his band. The original Fleetwood Mac. "Oh Well" Part 1 & 2, the guitar works stand up even today. Give it a shot.
The video isn't a literal interpretation of anything. It's meant to have a dream-like quality where disparate elements come together to inspire or provoke a mood or feeling.
Do you really need to know what’s going on??? Back in the day we just cared about the song and if the video was interesting then good .. we didn’t feel like we had to dissect everything like people do now!!!
Marilyn Manson did a version of this. Annie Lenox has done a couple of cool covers as a solo artist. A Whiter Shade Of Pale and River Deep,Mountain High.
This is an abstract video - it was not made to be figured out but simply enjoyed for it's visual performance. Most 80's video's are NOT figure-outtable :-D
"Sweet dreams are made of these" is in reference to politics, money, and religion. All things many people desire, but are hard to reach. The cows are sacred, the boardroom is ultimate political power, the computer is driving the money... It's all in a Fellini film mashup!
Did you notice annie was her own back up singer? Her image changes with every song be it Eurythmics or solo career.try. There must be an angel playing with my heart. Miricle of love Thorn in my side Here comes the rain again Missionary man Who's that girl I need a man.
@@setonhillstudios Annie is 69,from Aberdeen Scotland. Dave is 71,from Sunderland North England. She doesn't always do her own backing it just worked on this. You should try there must be an angel playing with my heart next.cause it's very different from sweet dreams but still their sound.stevie wonder plays harmonica on it. All the videos are creative, part of their sound, looks experience
This was at the start of the second British invasion of the US charts and the infancy of the MTV era. Videos didnt actually need to mean anything often the directors took their own interpretation of a song to create a vision of the song. Perhaps the clue is in the title Sweet Dreams and dreams dont always make sense (hence the appearance of the cow in the video and playing the cello in a field ). Annie once said she portrayed herself as a man in the video to show she was an equal to Dave
Annie Lennox started dressing up like a man, because she felt that she was not being taken seriously as a music artist by the British music press and within the music industry there.
I believe this was her way of combating the onslaught of environmentalist commercials dominating the airways back then, who were complaining that cows were killing us all. Annie liked her beef so said she was gonna fight back any way she could. BOOM! Cows are coming to work with everybody. They're outside working next to the cows. Everything is blissful. You can even fart at work, now, and nobody will ever notice. How great would that be? 😜
Growing up with this, none of it struck us as weird or odd, but as artistically & musically engaging, accomplished, thought provoking and often (as with this one) also humorous, tongue in cheek. Quite art-school. The UK public was baffled and disappointed that America seemed to think Annie Lennox of all people - a modest, sweet, thoughtful and private person of humungous talent - was some kind of sinister type. WTF?!!!
So it’s actually about the ‘suits’ in the music industry and their many abuses of their artists, the fact it sounds sexual I think is just a bonus for Lennox who wanted to provoke gender norms through her outfits and break perceptions of how women should act
I loved Eurythmics and Annie Lennox, I hate that video, however. I think some music is spoiled by video. "here comes the rain again" It's alright are my personal favourites. My absolute Annie Lennox song though Is Little Bird, it's lyrics are so meaningful it often makes me cry.
Hard '80's. Anything with that much synth and cows in the video? Very hard '80's. We knew back then, that videos were just something to entertain your eyes while your brain was busy enjoying the music, don't try to make sense of it , you could hurt yourself. 🤣🤣✌❤

Annie Lennox wrote in her biography that the concept is when your dreams get fulfilled, you realize the dreams were the motivation.

I miss MTV...Love the Eurythmics, Marilyn Manson did a cover of this❤❤❤
Și Eurhythmics a făcut un cover. Originalul acestei melodi a fost lansată în 1955 și este o baladă country
If you have cable, look for MTV Classic. All they show are vintage videos (and ads, of course), no VJs
Great song. What may be interesting for you is , a bit earlier, Annie singing with The Tourists, Dusty Springfield's, "I Only Want To Be With You"

The single was released January 21, 1983. That's definitely synths, as you said. They were very much used/over used (?) in the 80s.

The Red Dot is inspired by Indias culture. It's your third eye.
That brings me to the group Third Eye Blind. " Semi Charmed Life "
