    Fantastic PSA. It physically pains me when I read negative reviews from customers that clearly abused their vacuum and neglected basic upkeep.

    I've got a V7 and whenever I turn it on it smells. Even when I bought new filters and put it in there because I thought I ruined my first pair by rinsing with hot water. I let the first pair completely dry for about 48 hours and then I put them back on and immediately noticed a smell. I tried cleaning the cyclone before I washed the filters just because I was trying to make sure I maintained it and I think I might've gotten dirt some place that I shouldn't have. Any solution you might could offer me?

    Will the airflow/shroud keep it at the bottom of the bin when upside down with normal use since it's so small?

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In small quantities yes. Larger quantities, empty often. Normal household dust has no problems. Just follow the manual instructions.

    Thanks for the great illustration. I am a v15 user.
    Is that possible to let dust leak from HEPA filter or even the sucking pipe when the max line reached?
    Because I don’t know where the dust gets sucked into the bin, I worry that if dust normally gets injected through the disc plastic (around the max line), will overfill cause dust leak from that disc hole to the pipe and cause pollution again?

      Once dust enters the machine, it never leaves nutil the bin is emptied.

  • @lophilip
    @lophilip 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So that's why my filters clog so much. Still even though I regularly overfill the bin, and I only occasionally use the vacuum upright the filter light only comes on every 3 months, which is not too bad.

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use the machine upside down, but if there's a lot of fine dust in there that is so heavy it falls back down and covers the shroud, then just empty it and carry on. I managed to not rinse the filter for 3 months and it ended up looking like this th-cam.com/video/T3prXR-aeOg/w-d-xo.html

    is this then a desgin flaw ? as many people do use their vacumme up right to clean ceiling and curtains, in those times, does the dust simply go to the filter as the ccyscclone does not work up right

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No. Most household dust gets compacted and isn't loose like this. You also have to hugely overfill the bin. The manual clearly explains that fine dust should be picked up in small quantities. I also explain in the video about being a smart user if violating the manual and sucking up fine dust in very large quantities. User error is not indicative of design flaws. You can use the device upside down in general without issue. The cyclones DO work upside down. The video explained the special circumstances when the manual is ignored under usage that isn't normal in great detail, so might be worth watching it again.

    Is it Dangerous though? I Use the Gen5Detect and always go over the Max Line and my blue filter at the top looks fine, I dont pick up lots of fine dust like flour its just the general dust in a house.

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Watch the video you're commening on for 20 seconds and you'll get your answer. Above the max fill line, more dirt gets into the shroud than would have otherwise, increasing the rate that dirt reaches the filter. It's not 'dangerous' (whatever that means). There's no reason to ever go over the max fill line. It takes 5 seconds to empty their modern cleaners.

    • @ItsKingKan
      @ItsKingKan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @VacuumFacts I did watch the video fully thank you very much.... And I understand the Cyclones get clogged but if you would like me to rephrase it, Is it HARMFUL to the vacuum is what I'm saying because I always go over it and my filter looks fine, no where near as dirty as shown in your video. So going over the fill line just reduces performance of the vacuum and does not harm it is what you and the video is saying

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No it's not harmful. Going over the max fill line increases the likelihood of more dust getting through the shroud. While the cyclones deal with it, not all of it is captured and some escapes to the filters. So it increases the rate of filter dirtying. But this is fairly low anyway with Dyson's technology. At worst, if the filter clogs so much that it starts to impede airflow, then suction will drop off along with performance until it's rinsed. Generally best practice to simply empty the machine after every use. Takes 5 seconds and minimises odours. The next generation of first stage filtration, possibly this year if not next, looks to do away with the bin cyclone (dirt spinning in the bin) and shroud design. It uses clever and very simple inertial filtration which may even eliminate the need for a max fill line, as it will only clog when filled completely.

    Should we never make the V10 bin go upside down in use then? There are many situations where this can happen, such as cleaning curtain rods and things overhead. It seems like this gives the perpendicular bin alignment of the V7/V8 an advantage, because to vacuum something overhead the bin would just be sideways, whereas with the V10 the bin would be upside down.

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you can tip it upside down. Just make sure the shroud doesn't get completely clogged.

    Well shit, I did this a week ago--funnily enough, when I first got it. Aside from just smacking the unit with the bin open and cleaning the filters, anything else I should clean? I opened the filters after this video and went "holy shit" at how much actually got into the filter.

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No just empty the bin and rinse the filters as outlined in the manual. The filters should never get dirty with normal, responsible use (i.e. as intended and outlined in the manual).

    Great demonstration. Excellent video. But are you sure the inner chamber has to be overwhelmed to cause this? I have the same model as you and I’m very careful not to overfill as it’s a £500 machine I don’t want to destroy. However, the filter on mine has been caked in dust after little use and without, as far as I can remember tilting the machine upside down.

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Pretty confident. There's no other way cyclones could get blocked. If you tip it upside down in general, it's fine. It's even designed to work normally upside down. As mentioned in the video, the inner cyclone chamber contains lots of particles, but they're SO small, they take up virtually no space, even after a full main bin's worth of dust. So to actually fill it up so much that it blocks, you'd have to suck up CRAZY amounts of fine dust, FAR in excess of what you'd pick up with many full bins of normal household dust it was designed for. You'd have to suck up pure fine dust, like plaster dust or flour, as in the video demo. It can even handle that still, as shown, but you have to understand what's happening and that the inner chamber is filling up. If you fail to empty it, tip all that upside down, then you physically block your cyclone exits and thus rely on filters like an inferior bagged machine or cheap knock-off bagless product. Incidentally, you can't destroy the V10 by overfilling it (I demonstrated this twice in the video). All that happens is the filters clog and it stops sucking; then you empty and rinse. Simple. But the filters will never clog in normal, responsible use. What you can determine, is who the abusers of technology are. People that complain of filter clogging or show dirty filters are clearly clueless and irresponsible users of their products, because only neglect causes the cyclones to fail.

      To be fair, I’ve only noticed the filter really dusty one time and not since. I’m careful to clean it regularly - even when it appears clean. It was just that one time it was coated. Hard to see how the inner chamber would be so full when bin is emptied after each use and certainly before the max line. Maybe I did overfill and never realised, but it would only have been too full for one cleaning session - not so long as to overwhelm the inner chamber.

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's a difference between the filters getting a bit dirty and clogging. Cyclones have a cut-point. This is the size where there is 50% efficiency in cyclonic filtration, in other words, the size where 1 in every 2 particles escapes the cyclone. The cyclonic filtration efficiency has a size distribution. Some portion of most dust escapes the cyclones and is captured by the filter. But this amount is very small in general. Depending on what you suck up, even after a month of use, the filters can be mostly clean of visible dirt. Some people go an entire year without rinsing their filters and they still haven't clogged. But Dyson recommend rinsing them because of biological content to avoid odours (see here: th-cam.com/video/QTSadOm6WsI/w-d-xo.html and here th-cam.com/video/SCcVBgFZ7Dc/w-d-xo.html ). So a mildly dusty filter doesn't necessarily mean abuse. But a very dirty or clogged filter almost certainly does mean abuse. I empty the V10 after every use now. Very simple and hygienic to do and keeps things optimal. No hidden costs with consumable replacements (like bags), no additional harm to the environment. Superior technology.

      If you don’t work for Dyson, I think they couldn’t go far wrong in hiring you. You have a great knowledge about the technology and couldn’t agree more that it’s the best vacuum technology available. I’ll never not have Dyson machines I don’t think.

    Sad how hair can’t get fully filtered by the cyclones :/ me when I take out a filter after vacuuming my moms REALLY long hair: ... Dag she got long hair ;-; after a month: *gets clogged with hair and dust*

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think I've ever seen any convincing evidence that so much hair got through the cyclones under normal, responsible use, that it clogged to the extent that performance dropped. But of course, you apparently have this evidence, so please send it along for review and scrutiny if you're confident in your claim.

    Dyson cordless vacuums are designed to be lifted upside down when cleaning up high. Especially on the V10 and V11 so it's BS what you claim. Also some of us live in London with a lot of pollution coming inside and we naturally pick up fine dust, there is nothing we can do about that. I've experienced Dyson uprights losing suction DESPITE not going over the Max line. The V8 filters just clog up straight away due to obviously less suction power. Dysons DO lose suction and always have done. Their cinetic technology was a failure. Also you should not be using Cinetic footage in your video as Dyson cordless cyclones do not contain Cinetic Tips, so maybe you should be the one not misleading others with incorrect information!

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well that was the most convincing tirade ever...

    • @blackice7408
      @blackice7408 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He said if you suck up too much dirt (fine dust) and use it upside down. Plus the cinetic technology does work. However for the cinetic uprights, what i will say is, when you empty them, stuff a sock in the center chamber of the bin. That way when you empty it, the sock will block any dust trying to float back up the chamber, then will get sucked to the non removal finale post motor dual filters which will eventually get clogged. The only real true non suction losing cinetic bin i see is on the canister models. Because all airflow has to go through the cinetic cyclone tips and the following air chamber is on the top away from the dirt. So even of you empty the bin, theres no way if dust to the air chamber

    • @kimberlybrookes5844
      @kimberlybrookes5844 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He never once said that they never get clogged ever. Of course they eventually will, that’s why they have filters. You do have to clean them properly. The POINT is that they take much longer to clog compared to other vacuums

  • @hywel4767
    @hywel4767 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thing is the skirt in the bin is so shit that it doesnt stop dog hairs and my bin fills up from the top first. Pretty shite design for an “animal” vacuum designed specifically for animal hairs

    • @VacuumFacts
      @VacuumFacts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Except it's part of a system designed to maintain air flow through the shroud. And therefore works-especially if you spend 5 seconds messlessly emptying it after every use, as is good practice.
