    I’m loving the features of the 18 but I found REI co op trail 25, which I already have the 40. And I was looking for a smaller one to go to Disney with. I fear the 18 might too small for future usage plus the 25 has more features and compartments. Love your video! At the moment they have the 18 on sale for 55 and the 25 is regular price at 99.95 lol

      Nice! You got the matching set which is great. The 18 is good though for one persons stuff, but two peoples stuff at Disney for example may need some more space for sure.

    I have been using the 18L for 2 months to carry a bino, extra clothes and some food. Works well for a few hours walk or hike. Like the sturdy fabric to carry camera, delicate items and the material use to hold the shape of the backpack. Very soon, I am going to outgrow this but a 24L size is more ideal which REI does not make. 28L is starting to be too big and not my best choice on multi-day trips with trekking poles, more water and extra carryons. I'm going to give the REI Trail 25 a try.

    • @EDG
      @EDG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a great choice. To be honest, 25L is my preferred everyday carry size as well.

      @@EDG The REI Trail 25 did the job recently on all day-hikes at Yosemite and other parks . I like its trekking poles placement. The extra volume allowed me to carry an additional 1 or 2 bottle waters and more room for snacks, guides. It kept my items dry. I definitely have a use case for both the 18L and 25L. The fabric appear similar and can hold up vital electronic gear.

      @@jpadicecoffee9812 very nice! I’ll have to check out the trial 25 too because I have a similar use case for my trekking poles. The 18is fine but it’s too small and rounded so I don’t love the pole placement

    Oh wow. The new design for both the Ruckpacks are horrible compared to the original ones. I guess some cuts had to be made for the recycled stuff. The water bladder pocket (laptop pocket) seems in tact, but with the black backpacks it's hard to tell if there's still two cutouts. One of the positive designs (depending on use) for the 28L is that both compression straps on both sides are moved up higher and won't get in the way of the zipper. I'm a big fan of the Ruckpacks and was going to grab another 28L, but I believe I need to go check these out in the store.
    Are the hidden straps on the bottom still there as well as the hidden bungee cord/hook on the top hidden pockets?

    • @EDG

      interesting to know. I never had the older rucksacks. I would definately go check them out in person. The hidden straps on bottom are still there. I dont think there is a hidden bungee cord though.

    Hi! Great vids :). Can I ask your opinion on how the REI 28L compares to the Patagonia Black Hole 32L in terms of commuting with laptop and 3/4 day trips?

    • @EDG
      @EDG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! Appreciate it. Man that’s the best question anyone has asked in a while. Starting with price, the REI is less expensive and also goes on sale. The Patagonia almost never goes on sale, so the REI could be cheaper by like $50. For laptop commuting, both are pretty equivalent I’d say. Neither have a dedicated sleeve, but do have a false bottom and padding/structure on the back panel. The REI also has way better organization for holding things like a charger, mouse, etc. and finally it’s capacity. For 3/4 day trips , unless you pack light, a 28l is borderline too small, though it def I nitely can be done. A long answer to say that it depends. But In my heart, I’d go with the REI myself based on lower price and more organization, unlesss you absolutely needed the 4 extra liters. Do you?

    • @bgillissen
      @bgillissen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EDG Thanks for the fast response! No I don't think the 4L will make a big difference. I usually pack pretty light! But also the price doesn't matter too much for me. As long as it is good quality. I'm pretty sure the Black Hole 32L does have a dedicated laptop compartment though. Not sure it's an upgrade from previous models, but that's a feature that caught my eye!
      Also, I've been looking at more of your vids and stumbled upon the MLC26 review and now I wonder... Did this make my previous question redundant? This bag looks amazing as well..

    • @EDG
      @EDG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bgillissen ah shoot. You’re right, the 32l does have the laptop sleeve haha, sorry got confused. if you’re open to the MLC and price is not an issue, I cannot recommend the MLC enough. It’s versatile and more feature rich than the black hole 32. It just looks more square like a Duffel vs the 32. But honestly, the black hole being a top loader only makes packing (and accessing stuff that the bottom) was kinda annoying over time. For a bag that large, i just don’t like top loaders. Did my answer help at all, or just give more options to choose from! Here’s to help.

    • @bgillissen
      @bgillissen ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well.. I think you helped me and made me a poorer man at the same time :D. It feels like the MLC 26 is exactly what I'm looking for! I was wondering about the functionality of the BH 32L, so this discussion really answered my questions. Yes it looks a bit better, but in the end it's functionality that really counts. One last question though: you did a review on the black updated MLC 26, but it seems they don't sell the black anymore? Did they update again, or..? Thanks again for your help. I subbed, even though I probably won't need a new bag for the upcoming years ;).

    • @EDG
      @EDG  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bgillissen yep, I highly recommend the updated2022 MLC. They do make it in black, but I’ve noticed they sell out every couple of weeks so you’ll just need to wait for them restock. Hah glad I could help!! And appreciate the subscribyion, I promise I won’t blast your subscriptions page, I kinda just make videos as I buy bags (which also isn’t too often). I think last years MLC mini can also be found on the resale market, but people are reselling way above retail. Yea, the 32l just didn’t do it much for me after using it. It’s a good bag, but if you’re entering the +30l carrying capacity, there’s a handful of other bags in think are better. Cheers!

    I was convinced by your Ruckpack 18 video because I really need a new bag, but on REI's website they're all called "recycled" now, so I don't know if it's different than yours here.
    I was going to get a ULA dragonfly and then I saw they raised the price to $200 and removed the two seemingly useful pockets on the straps. So I fear feature removals on these "recycled" ones.
    From a reply on the REI site to a negative review:
    "This newer version has many of the same features as the predecessor and now offers one additional exterior pocket to help further organize your gear. The overall weight of the pack has also been trimmed by over a pound, but the biggest difference is the new model is made with recycled, bluesign-approved materials"

    • @EDG
      @EDG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very interesting... now I'm questioning what mine is too. I purchased mine in store and threw away the tags and receipt a while ago, so I can't even check it that way. If the features are the same, are you saying the recycled is a negative? The newer bags/companies are moving to recycled, blue-sign approved materials so I'd hope its the same.

    • @nirv
      @nirv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EDG a lot of the reviews on Rei's website are critical of the new material. Many saying they took a good bag which is the one I think you're reviewing and ruined it.

      @EDG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nirv dang, I'll have to check I out. Though maybe I shouldn't cuz I love the bags I have. Blissful ignorance. But yea, if they compromised on features or didn't drop the price , thats a big mess up by REI. I get the switch of material, but if they're gonna strip features they should jsut market it as a new model all together.
