Edwin Hubble didn't get a Nobel prize because there are still questions and doubts raised by some people about the bigbang and the expansion of the universe. Because we currently know about only a small part of the universe (Observable Universe) and we don't know if the rest of the universe is infinite or finite and is it expanding the same way as the observable universe. We don't have any solid clue.

My question is how are matter/gravity related to the expansion of the universe? Acceleration means occupying and increasing volume of space over time and since space is expanding that means that all matter is accelerating with respect to space. Since the force of gravity is no different than the force felt during acceleration doesn't that imply that the universe must be expanding at an accelerating rate in order for matter to occupy more space over time. There must be an increase of space if there is no increase in motion through space. Also acceleration of matter must be with respect to space instead of relative to other matter because only with accelerating motion can motion be assigned to a specific body rather than both as in cases of constant velocity motion. With constant motion you can't determine which body is actually in motion but with accelerating bodies you can determine motion independently of the presence of another body. And if the acceleration of matter is determined with respect to space itself then the acceleration of space itself must also be determined with respect to matter. The two must be linked. This also suggests that space may be quantized because in order for acceleration to be with respect to space itself then space must exist in discreet units so that you can occupy a definite amount over time and the amount of force felt being equal to the number of quanta occupied above relative constant.

What I understand from your comment, actually we don't know if space itself is a real physical thing, we just have an observation that all the galaxies(and other stuff) in the universe is going farther away from eachother and this expansion is accelerating. We hadn't observed that the space is expanding but the stuff in the universe is expanding. The rest are still our assumptions and theories.

@@anzaklaynimation but if Einstein showed that gravity is due to the curvature of space then matter must interact with space itself to produce gravity as opposed to matter reacting to matter. String theory proposes the graviton as being the force carrier for gravity but that presumes that the force originates from matter and radiates from matter to matter. I'm not convinced that this is the case. It could be that space is a field that seeks it's lowest possible energy state and since matter essentially just takes up space it prevents space from achieving it. We know that the mere presence of energy doesn't mean usable energy, it's the difference in energy and flow from high density to low that allows work to be done, so maybe it's the difference between space and occupied space/matter that creates the force of gravity? It's all speculation on my part but it's my suspicion that gravity and expansion are related. If you were to accelerate an object not in one specific direction but in every direction simultaneously what would you get? A black hole and an expanding universe. A black hole can be thought of as moving away from everything in all directions because from all directions light is red shifted coming from the direction of the black hole and if they are moving away from everything what about the space between two black holes. It must be expanding right, with the exception of things close enough to be gravitationally bound to it which is possibly why we observe distant galaxies moving away from our own but not our local cluster.
