They had a very small (less than 40) talented team get this game together in about 1 year! The fact that this Gamecube game is keeping me satisfied till the next Starfox for Wii U comes says a lot about what a quality dev can do.
That's because of a highly talented developer like Factor 5, even Star Wars games made years later after Rogue Leader (2001) couldn't achieve the same quality that Factor 5 delivered, I'm thinking of the Star Wars Battlefront series of games, which looked cartoony compared to this, that developer just didn't have the talent.. Rogue Leader, thanks to Factor 5's talent and hard work looks and sounds very very close to the movies...No other Star Wars game developer ever came close.
Congratulations on two things: 1) you're awesome at this game! and 2) you've got really good taste for video games, this is one of the best games for an incredible console ;)
Wedge Antilles - One of the few men that could beat a Jedi in a starfight WITHOUT the force. And my favorite character in the entirety of the Star Wars saga.
@naguleader Actually, yeah: I was playing it on an HDTV -- I thought it might had something to do with the new TV but I wasn't sure... I assumed that I just had the HDTV adjusted to the wrong settings -- So I didn't exactly know that it was simply the HDTV /itself/ and that it would do that no matter /what/ the settings were set to.. The lag time is like 0.2 or 0.3 seconds or something (less than 1 second though) Thanks for telling me about that still-- The 500 character limit drives me nuts
Okay, I'm definitely not the only one that knew you could go underneath the Liberty and have a bunch of the fleet crash into it from above. It's a pretty awesome glitch!
you have to get behind the star destroyer to shoot the shield generators at the top. Find the "blind spot" of the SD where not a lot of turrets can get you. It helps to shoot the turrets right next to the shield generators too As for the bottom one, I made sure that I took it out really quick with torpedoes while also rolling to avoid the fire
They don't seem to shoot too much when you first get there. Later on they do, but if you sporadically accelerate and decelerate, it's harder for them to hit you. If you watch the video closely, you'll notice that I was making use of blind spots on the Star Destroyer (spots where I could fire on the generators where parts of the ship block most of the turrets.)
@hppybob Back then I wasn't aware that you could turn that off. I popped in and out of the cockpit to cancel it out and also at some points it helped me to aim better whilst in cockpit mode
Best Gamecube game ever! This always will be my favorite mission in RS2. I love your gameplay of the level, too! (The X-Wing is always my preferred ship. Hahaha).
when you're flying towards the Star Destroyer on the left, look down at the planet. if you look hard enough you'll see a tiny tiny shimmering. that's the upgrade
Rogue Leader is by no means a simulation, it is total arcade-style shoot 'em up. The X-Wing series is a better example of simulation. Though i don't really give a f about the graphics to be honest, i just like shooting TIE fighters!
Do you have some of the hidden upgrades for you ships ? The shield generators use to last when I am trying them... Anyway, very impressive aiming during the combat, wow !
I wish my Rogue Leader 2 disk didn't have cracks and scratches on it..... Every once in a while it gives error messages when going to the next level or whatever forcing me to either 1. open and close the lid or 2. shut off and turn on the gamecube all over again... On a different subject, I sort of noticed while playing a gamecube game on the Wii that the controls actually lag slightly and it screws up "precision" based gameplay I assume the same would happen to Rogue Leader 2 if I tried it..
One cool thing about this level is when you hit the command deck of each star destroyer, an imperial shuttle comes out of the bottom that you can destroy. just a little something I thought people who have this game might find interesting. :)
@AgentSmithClan Yeah, Star Wars in general is now about lightsabers and Jedis instead of spaceships and dogfights. Hell, the last two movies had probably the worst excuses for space battles ever: a dogfight in an asteroid field where only one guy is shooting, and a couple of interceptors flying around in a big enormous battle but not actually shooting anything; instead they just have that stupid boring scene where they get the buzz droids off the ships. How exciting.
Why was this only released for the Gamecube of all consoles? The original was on N64 (which almost everyone had back then so it was fine) and the PC so it reached a wider fan base. It's like they wanted as less fans to play the sequel as possible. Would it have killed them to have had a PC port as well? Hopefully Steam will get on that in the near future since this doesn't deserve to fade away with the cube.
Because Factor V was a second party developer (like Retro) so they only published games exclusive for Nintendo consoles. That game will never be remake because Factor V bankrupt in 2009 with the Rogue Squadron trade mark belonging to Disney and the Licencing for the Star Wars franchise to make videogames belongs to EA.
Playing this level with Vader's TIE Advanced is just unfair.. those cluster missiles make quick work of the TIEs. Definitely a fun level though, one of my favs from the game.
@naguleader Agreed. At least, there are the Clone Wars animations that are, compared to the movies, much more exciting in terms of space combat and action in general.
Well, who the hell would know how many fighters the rebels had? I thought it was like 80 and less judging from the movie. Along with that a single star destroyer carries perhaps a dozen 7 fighter squadrons in their hanger bays. Still dont know why the imperials gave in even though they outnumbered them 8:1
I too loathe the fact that it is so easy to crash into enemy fighters. However, you can actually make it so that the camera doesn't zoom out in the options
Battlefront 2 sucked in terms of graphics, it's pretty much understood. This game was incredible in terms of graphics because it was a launch title for the Gamecube!
You know, the empire might seem like a more competent enemy if their tie fighters had shield generators. Seriously, the x-wing, the rebel's main fighter, has a shield generator, a repair droid and optional ion cannons. The tie fighter has two solar panels and laser cannons and that's it. No shield generator. You'd think a guy who runs the galaxy could afford shield generators for his fighters, but what do I know about being an evil ruler?
and, considering that (according to wookipedia) there were approx. 500 rebel fighters in the battle, there is a reason the empire got it's ass kicked so badly :]
Boah you pretty good in this game. That was our first and best gamecube game. I aslways suck in this mission , but now i saw how i must make it. thanks you i will try it again. ^^ 5/5
Agreed, it's the truest to the movies in terms of flight simulator gameplay, rather than realism, which the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series had. I made a few speed runs of this game, if you'd like to check them out.
This is a fun level, but the two major gripes I have about it: #1: It's easy to crash your ship into a TIE Fighter or TIE Interceptor, losing a life unceremoniously. #2: Whenever a TIE Fighter or TIE Interceptor stalks you from behind, the camera angle zooming out can get really annoying. But all in all, fun level :)
Personally, I think as long as you don't die early and shoot everything as best as you can, this Gold Medal is actually easier to get than you know. I'm trying to Gold medal this stage with a Y-Wing, but I know it's possible :)
I agree with the comments here, there were brilliant flight/space simulators with X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and Rogue Squadron... the latest Star Wars game I have with space combat is BF2 and although I love the game the space combat sucks especially in comparison with the classics. Sad that with the advancement of technology and so much more space available these games seem to be getting simpler with less to do.
Well since you didn't ban any other Akbar quotes,... "Our Shields can't repel firepower of that magnitude." "Our Cruiser won't last long against their destroyers." "All ships prepare to retreat on my command." and I think that's it.
Based on your disdain for having "It's a trap!" as a comment on this video, and the temptation many are doubtlessly experiencing, one could say that in this instance, the line "It's a trap!" is, ITSELF, a trap....
I really wish they would take the improved visuals and smoothness of this game and would implement them into a new X-Wing or Tie-Fighter game. Because while this game looks and moves nice, the missions just don't compare. Star Destroyers are jokes in this, you blow up 4 things and they're done. in X-Wing (the game) Star Destroyers are serious threats that can't easily be taken out.
They had a very small (less than 40) talented team get this game together in about 1 year!
The fact that this Gamecube game is keeping me satisfied till the next Starfox for Wii U comes says a lot about what a quality dev can do.

Rogue Leader, thanks to Factor 5's talent and hard work looks and sounds very very close to the movies...No other Star Wars game developer ever came close.
the ship i like to play as on this level: tie advanced because of freakin cluster-seeking missiles
The fact that this game still looks good is a testament to how much thought and effort Factor 5 put into it.
Congratulations on two things: 1) you're awesome at this game! and 2) you've got really good taste for video games, this is one of the best games for an incredible console ;)
I always wondered why they bothered to bring a medical frigate to the battle in the first place. Couldn't they come in after the fighting is over?
i miss this game, had such a great youth thanks to games like these ;(
That was an extremely impressive display : ) especially that spin to dodge the laser fire from the underside of the Star Destroyer!
Wedge Antilles - One of the few men that could beat a Jedi in a starfight WITHOUT the force. And my favorite character in the entirety of the Star Wars saga.
One thing that's good about this game is that you no longer hear the other pilot say "I'm clear but my fighter is down" anymore!
Excellent gold medal run man. Your accuracy is impressive.

DAMN! Best game rendition of the Battle over Endor. I miss this game. I should've kept it.
@hppybob Back then I wasn't aware that you could turn that off. I popped in and out of the cockpit to cancel it out and also at some points it helped me to aim better whilst in cockpit mode
This level always makes me think "ahh... just like the movie" until the chick yells at you for being under attack.
Best Gamecube game ever! This always will be my favorite mission in RS2. I love your gameplay of the level, too! (The X-Wing is always my preferred ship. Hahaha).
I watched your run and I'm like: "NO WONDER THIS MISSION IS SO CRAZY"
when you're flying towards the Star Destroyer on the left, look down at the planet. if you look hard enough you'll see a tiny tiny shimmering. that's the upgrade
Agreed, this is one of the best Star Wars games ever made imo. Possibly the best ever, although that really depends on what type of game you like.
Rogue Leader is by no means a simulation, it is total arcade-style shoot 'em up. The X-Wing series is a better example of simulation. Though i don't really give a f about the graphics to be honest, i just like shooting TIE fighters!
@naguleader I have the same problem. A bug is caused by some human error somewhere, although not neccessarily "bad" programming.
Do you have some of the hidden upgrades for you ships ? The shield generators use to last when I am trying them... Anyway, very impressive aiming during the combat, wow !
I wish my Rogue Leader 2 disk didn't have cracks and scratches on it.....

@darkdill That, TIE Defenders, Assault Gunboats, and Missile Boats
Love this game! Even if some of the levels were as hard as dinosaur turds.
where are the others wings? because i only see lando and wedge in the battle.
this game still looks gorgeous. also holy shit you're a lot better at this game than i was
@Ariranhaa Definitely. The 3D one is starting to annoy me with all the Gungans though XD
You do know that there is a setting to turn off the camera zoom that happens when there is a Tie Fighter pursuing you, don't you?
Superb aiming, you're a far better pilot than me. Excellent video.
Get it!!!! its the best game ever !!!!!!!!!!!
This is really impressive. I always had trouble just completing this level
It's called Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader
@SUPREMEMASTER1 I played this on a Wii but there was no lag. Are you playing on an HDTV? The conversion time from 480p to 1080p messes up the timing
@Nofarewell You could try and emulator, I think there are downloads somewhere on the internet. That or buy a used gamecube.
Why was this only released for the Gamecube of all consoles? The original was on N64 (which almost everyone had back then so it was fine) and the PC so it reached a wider fan base. It's like they wanted as less fans to play the sequel as possible. Would it have killed them to have had a PC port as well? the crashing ties at the beggining are funny
Does anyone know if they some day are going to make a remake for the pc??
Yup, Factor 5 pumped out miracles! Too bad they underpaid their employees though kekeke
Fuck being a Jedi. This is where it's at.
Playing this level with Vader's TIE Advanced is just unfair.. those cluster missiles make quick work of the TIEs. Definitely a fun level though, one of my favs from the game.
For how much ass it kicks, can anyone believe that this game is ELEVEN years old?
@naguleader Agreed. At least, there are the Clone Wars animations that are, compared to the movies, much more exciting in terms of space combat and action in general.
Well, who the hell would know how many fighters the rebels had? I thought it was like 80 and less judging from the movie. I too loathe the fact that it is so easy to crash into enemy fighters. However, you can actually make it so that the camera doesn't zoom out in the options
Wow, you're so lucky in this mission. Why aren't those Star Destroyer turrets pouring lasers on you like crazy?
It's because they're two different games. Rogue Squadron is an arcade-style shoot 'em up while X-Wing is more of a flight simulator.
Asking them to form up or attack the guns doesn't really make a difference at all, but they're fairly good at taking out fighters
This mission was by far the hardest, it took me literally 100 tries to beat this one.
I like that Interceptor flew into his buddy xD
this game kicked ass. gameplay was so good and the graphics were amazing for being a gamecube game
Battlefront 2 sucked in terms of graphics, it's pretty much understood. This game was incredible in terms of graphics because it was a launch title for the Gamecube!
I never understood why the death star shot the defenseless transport in the movies and not both the capital ship and the battleship
I never played Rogue Squadron 3- was it really that much better than Rogue Leader?
where exactly is the upgrade in this level? i cant seem to find it no matter how much time i spend looking >.
What the Hell are transport fregates doing in space battles?
You know, the empire might seem like a more competent enemy if their tie fighters had shield generators. Seriously, the x-wing, the rebel's main fighter, has a shield generator, a repair droid and optional ion cannons. The tie fighter has two solar panels and laser cannons and that's it. No shield generator. You'd think a guy who runs the galaxy could afford shield generators for his fighters, but what do I know about being an evil ruler?
they brought their ENTIRE fleet. Any transports would be vulnerable is separated from the main group
Incoming fighters at one-seven-decimal-two-eight!
The force is strong with this one
I hate it that have you have a disadvantage when you watch the cutscenes. The time is counted and the empire makes points while you´re whatching.
@325982668 According to the Star Wars wiki, the frigate eventually gets blown to bits by the Death Star o_O
So why do you keep popping in and out of cockpit, and why did you leave the zoom-out on? I hated that when I played this game.
@LtCnlObvious Concentrate all fire on that Super Star Destroyer!
@smarterthenyou001 i wish they would just remaster these titles for the ps3, the graphics are great already.
and, considering that (according to wookipedia) there were approx. 500 rebel fighters in the battle, there is a reason the empire got it's ass kicked so badly :]
Boah you pretty good in this game.
That was our first and best gamecube game.
I aslways suck in this mission , but now i saw how i must make it. thanks you i will try it again. ^^
5/5
awesome! why do you tell your crew to flee though?
Less friendlies lost that way, I guess.
this game still looks amazing
Can anyone tell the THE NAME OF THE GAME? please i want to play
Today I got the gold medal, is a difficult task, you play very well, I also shoot down 63 enemies. Great game...
@ModelOmega now think what a whole squadron can do
Agreed, it's the truest to the movies in terms of flight simulator gameplay, rather than realism, which the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series had. I made a few speed runs of this game, if you'd like to check them out.
@Nabiki73 nah, this one was light years better than the third one
This is a fun level, but the two major gripes I have about it:
#1: It's easy to crash your ship into a TIE Fighter or TIE Interceptor, losing a life unceremoniously.
Cause it's a movie?
one of the best games on the gamecube, sucks that there were so few missions.
I also meant to ask: were you playing this on the Nintendo Wii or the GameCube???
Rogue Squadron 1/2 were the shit! I loved playing this mission.
@hylkon1 read the description bro
I agree with the comments here, there were brilliant flight/space simulators with X-Wing, Tie Fighter, and Rogue Squadron... the latest Star Wars game I have with space combat is BF2 and although I love the game the space combat sucks especially in comparison with the classics.

@naguleader lol I missed one? good sense of humor mate.
I find it hard to chase after the fighters and bombers because they blend in with space.
is it wrong to say that this game has better graphics then battlefront 2
don't get me wrong I love both games its just something i've noticed
@naguleader Thanks for the reply. RL is easily one of the best games ever to bear the Star Wars name.
Based on your disdain for having "It's a trap!" as a comment on this video, and the temptation many are doubtlessly experiencing, one could say that in this instance, the line "It's a trap!" is, ITSELF, a trap....
I'll have to try that out sometime.
Agreed! So much fun. =] I made a few speed runs of this game if you'd like to check them out.
awesome i got gold medals back in the day on all the levels nice run..
Even though this is Gamecube, the graphics still look good
@ModelOmega I know right!
Why this vid's so long??
I really wish they would take the improved visuals and smoothness of this game and would implement them into a new X-Wing or Tie-Fighter game.
