“There is a special Lionel time space continuum interrupter thingy under there that the videographer has promised never to reveal. It’s rather simple really. It involves two tracks with electro magnetic vibrating actuators and a microwave oven. For 1957 it was way before its time . But they did prove rather finicky”. Roger Carp Classic Toy Trains.
A double helix would make the train disappear even longer but this neat little layout is a great idea too . Probably the best post-war layout from Lionel . Kids loved this , including me back in the 1950's !
As a child I saw this display in the window at the Sears store in Woodstock Illinois. There was a large crowd standing outside on the sidewalk watching. I tried to get a view down the track into the mountain, but there was something in the window on the side preventing that. It's interesting to see it again.
Easily caught, when the loco comes out of the tunnel you can feel the gradient level of the cars emerging... aka its coming from below. So when loco enters the tunnel it should be going down into a hidden chamber underneath doing a quick circle/curve maneuver and finally emerging out. Nice trick indeed.
Love the illusion of the long train disappearing in the tunnel. Took me a second to realize that you have a loop under the main layout. Must be to early for me lol
I may understand the principal of how this clever visual trick works, but it is tremendously seamless in both operation and appearance, particularly when viewed from the front. Could you possibly show us how it looks underneath? It must be done in an insanely clever way to duck down and rise up in such close proximity!!!!
$80 in 1950, which would be equal to a bit over $800, isn't anywhere near 'cheap', but certainly a possibility for a Lionel dealer to invest in, as *chuckle* it would appear was the purpose of the whole thing!

always loved the guys that have magnetic traction and then clean their track with steel wool....think about it

nice
And at first I thought it was going to be a boring oval and tunnel like the displays in my little town 50 years ago. Thanks so much!
This is my favorite postwar display layout, thanks for posting!

Love this little effect- nice set
This is absolutely amazing but why did you never show the under side?
Because Magician's never reveal their secrets. 😉
@@frankmmiiiis that why you can’t open the tunnel?
Very kewl layout indeed.
AWESOME!!!!! Keep up the good work.
I believe that Model Railroader still has back issues with this and plans with it.

Oh, Fester must have been fooling with that thing. This always happens when he does it…
Great video. Like me !
Now make another video showing the train from underneath. Is there a base under the loop or are there just angle brackets holding the tracks?
No wonder why this set is worth $25,000 today. It just blows my mind. Back in 1950, this set was worth $80.
SteamKing2160 h
It's worth 25K ?
If you can find the set, then possibly.

WOW this layout is so awesome! How was this done?
where can I get one
It`s all done with mirrors
How'd it do that?
The train entered the tunnel right but it then the track curved down and then rose back up.
How
How in the hell did they do that
What’s the trick
A tight circle of track inside the tunnel
WITCHCRAFT!
