I’m interested to discover why Alocasia Azlanii doesn’t appear in many youtubers’ collections. It’s my absolute favourite. Prettier than Cuprea, it’s iridescent pink!
Maybe because the azlanii and the cuprea look very similar to each other and the cuprea is a bit more common ? ☺️ thats my thought Or at least… let’s say I thought about buying an azlanii but it’s too similar for me.☺️
Thank you so much for this information 😊 I'm fairly new to Alocasia. I currently have 4 different ones, including Cuprea 😂 I'm gonna look into this, and maybe fall in love again! 🙄😬😂😂 Have a planty day! 😘
Feed your alocasia's , I have 6 or 7 of them and in growing season I give them ferts at every watering and they all hold somewhere between 6 to 10 leaves at a time , they are very hungry plants.
I really like how genuine and informative your videos are. I got a peace lily plant from my grandpa's funeral a couple of years ago and have made mistake after mistake with it. I've started to really enjoy taking care of it though, and have been adding more plants to the room to get the peace lily some friends.
You don't have to worry because Alocasias are the one plant I would never have in my house again. I had a couple in the past and hated them so much I gave them away. Maybe it was just me because my friend can grow them just fine but, imo they were too much hard work and I swore I would never get another one. I'm an Aglaonema gal myself.
I just picked up an Aglaonema Pink Aurora and it's absolutely gorgeous. As it's my first Aglaonema, would you recommend medium light? It was listed as low light at the store but I figured it would require more since it's variegated and has lots of color. They had a couple more varieties I might go back for.
@@dustfeatherandco hello! Tose ones are gorgeous and yes, you're right. While they can all manage pretty well in low light, the paler ones (pink and white ones) prefer a bit more light. My pink ones are in medium and bright indirect light. Just make sure they don't burn and they'll be fine. Welcome to the world of Aglaonemas - they're all gorgeous!
@@thevahandbookThanks for replying! I have it a couple feet away from a north facing window so it gets medium indirect light all day and seems to be loving it. So far, so good.
Give those alocasia way more fertilizer when it’s losing leaves like that as it tries to grow new leaves! They’re such hungry little babies! You can feed them every other week (or even give half as much fertilizer every week) during growing season :) they’ll thank you for it! The “cycling” only happens because they need more fertilizer (nutrients) because they use SO MUCH darn energy to put out new leaves. You won’t have alocasia drama anymore.
I've got to be honest I have been building a general houseplant collection for a year now, but by far my favourite is alocasia. In fact, I am at the point where I'm giving away some of my other plants to make room for them. And I can see me collecting alocasia mainly. They're great in pon, but you still have to watch especially if the roots outgrow the pot and are just sitting in water. My favourite at the moment is the regal shield, it's a beast and looks magical, towering over everything! They're all fabulous! ❤❤❤❤
Hello❤ Do you have a mix for them? my plants seem to dislike the transition from moss to soil and start to loss their roots😭. i was thinking maybe it was the medium i picked? or should i try a semi-hydro route? thank u before hand♥
having spent a year battling fungus gnats with all my alocasia plants (self inflicted) i've decided after a very sulky winter to transfer all my alocasia plants to growing in Leca with the exception of my one Yukatan. Hoping the switch to semi hydro will solve both my pest problem and help me manage my obsession with over watering.
Hi Claire. I'm quite new to house plants. Kids grown, just 1 left at home, no grandkids, yet😮. I made a terrible rookie mistake. I put my open bag of compost back in my coal shed. I forgot to close the compost bag, just dumped it in. Iv repotted lots of plants. Now iv had to put yellow sticky fly catchers in most pots. Those lil flies must have laid their children in the bag in the shed😢. Dang it
Regal shield is stunning. I bought one in Lidl for £6.99! They grow absolutely enormous!!!!! The leaves are like satin. The undersides are beautiful. One of the easiest ones to grow from corms.
I love all your alocasia, im a new alocasia mom, i have like 15 alocasias and it’s really good learning from your videos. Im buying pon right now and transfer them 😁
Always love these comparison videos that highlight the different species within a specific genus! I think Peperomia would be another cool one to cover at some point.
Revisiting this video (I'm too up to date on the rest 😅) my portora low rider is constantly infected with greenfly! Finally seem to have stemmed it with a huge spray of organic rose clear and adding more perlite to the DIY-pon. Great videos, big fan!
Bought my first alocasia red secret in the beginning of last winter. It has succeed to live till the spring and make now enormous leaves? I've lost zero leaf for the moment. So glad to have discover this plant, really like it. I have a polly i bought as baby, and a dragon which is right too. Cross my fingers ! Thank you for yours tips, but not ready yet to pass on pond. All my alocasias are in soil with perlite and coco fiber. Sorry for my bad englis, i'm french.
I understand the addiction. Out of 3 I paid “full price”for my Amazonia and Dragon Scale then found a distressed Jacklyn at Lowes. Few plants that I did not get as a rescue or very small for price reason but the Alocasia call to me
I must get my hands on a jackyn alocasia. definitely my favorite from your collection. mealy bugs are a nightmare, i gave up on treating a plant after 2 years luckily they didn't spread to my other house plants.
Love a good Alocasia. I just got two recently that weren't doing the best in my local Radway GC , cleaned them up & threw them in my indoor greenhouse & I cannot wait to see what happens with them. One has this supercool black/dark green felt like leaves with striking pale green/white viens & the other is almost jet black or really really dark purple with this off white pin border around the leaves & it has this crazy red/pink/purple iridescence under lights & this wierd polkadot sploching on the stems base . Alittle mistreated as I said but a super fun purchase & literally neeeeeded in my collection 🥹
These are by far my favorite 🪴 plants, love the look of exotic Amazonian jungle looking plants. Absolutely gorgeous looking. Love your collection and your care for plants ❤
I purchased my first alocasia. She's a watsoniana wrinkle. She is absolutely stunning and intimidating. I don't want to do her a disservice, so I'm doing all the research I can. Unbelievably gorgeous plant. I'm thinking about purchasing more.
After I managed to keep my Pothos alive for 6 months and a snake plant and Aloe Vera for even longer I compulsively bought a beautiful plant named Alocasia. When I arrived home it was still alive but after watching some TH-cam videos I‘m realizing it’s going to die in probably a week. I’m a dog person, not a plant person but I’m determined to keep that Alocasia just as happy and healthy as my dog even though it seems much harder. Wish me luck!
I have 4 alocasia, all in pon. My cuprea has adapted to the pon the best and right away- it has been pushing out new leaves before the last newest has hardened off. It’s my favorite, and I highly recommend Pon for this guy.
ive been using your videos to sleep for months now has really helped, lmao idk if u care i do love the videos lol but i always fall asleep which for me is well needed otherwise i stand over my plants watering thwm and repotting ahahah
Great information! Now I want to buy Alocasia😅 I just killed Alocasia Frydek last month and I don't think I want to buy Alocasia again. But because of this video, now I want to try one more time.😂. Tq for all the tips!
i've watched your video and went yesterday and bought 2 alocasias, LOL, portodora and ........... forgot the name, will keep watching your chanel it is great
Alocasia nut✋🏻 Nebula is my nemesis I’m on my third one 🤞🏻 root rot, especially when the plant is young, with not a particularly big tuber to speak of is the enemy. Now put my babes in LECA but now I’m thinking about using PON I think it will be more stable holding the plant upright. Great episode!!❤
Ohhh you got a Regal Shield! 😍 It's my favourite, they grow so fast and get absolutely huge! It's another thirsty one, especially when they get big... I had to put mine in a self-watering pot as I couldn't keep up!
I love alocasia and I’ve had a lot of varieties, a lot of the very uncommon and hard to find ones too. I’m getting rid of most of them now because they just need so much feed and so much light and I want to keep that precious real estate for plants I love more. I’m seriously sizing down this summer because my collection became too overwhelming when life otherwise got overwhelming and hard
Thanks for the great Alocasia video! Yours are amazing. I have a Zebrina, a Silver Dragon and I’m heading off to the nursery tomorrow to hopefully grab a Cuprea. I’m not sure how many you have among your collection but I’d be interested to see a future video in this format for Calatheas, I have a Vittata, Roseopicta & an Ornata in my collection.
Thank you so much for this great video!! It really helped me to make a choice between the two Alocasia's I wanted to add to the two I have already! And now I ordered 5 more 😂😂😂
It’s so funny how easy for some are hard for others. I have a horrible time with dragonscale which seem to be easy for everyone but I have 2 cupreas that cause me absolutely no problems at all. One I transferred from moss to soil a few weeks ago and is doing very well.
Hi Claire, just rewatching all your videos on alocasias as bought myself a teeny frydek today from local garden centre. Apologies if this is not the place to ask questions. You mention several times that you didn't have a good experience with pon at first. What was the problem please. I moved all my alocasias into pon after watching yourself and another saying how a great they do. They did soon well quickly for a while but have now started getting root rot. I have washed the pon. Advice would be great.x
I'm surprised to hear that alocasia cuprea red secret is troublesome for you. I've got a few types of alocasias ( 7 or 8) and some of them are causing some problems ( especially the silver dragon) but I find alo cuprea red secret the least problematic of all my alocasias. I've had it for around two years now and it's giving me new leaves regularly, now having 13. I grow them in a soil mix with pine bark, coconut fiber, perlite and keramzite and it's doing fine. Very revarding and easy plant for me and so lovely metalic purple brown colour. Thanks for the great video!
I’m new to keeping Alocasia ❤I’m confused as you can keep them in pon but then you explain they can be extremely susceptible to root rot and fungal issues if their soil doesn’t have proper drainage and becomes waterlogged? Thank you Maria x
My alocasia cucullata has become massive! It's grown to be about a meter tall and wide in the 6 months I've had it. I've had a little trouble with spider mites, but that seems to have been resolved now.
leca or turfac, pumice. even perlite and coco would work just fine for that bottom water "pon" style media(? sorry im a yanky lol). i love sip/wick pots tho.. thanke clare. nice alocasia collection ! i never knew they were different from colcasias. fun facts are fun
Hello Claire, I have an Alocasia Dragon Scale that is blooming with flowers again, this is the second time this plant is blooming. Last time it actually pushed out 2 flowers than a 3rd one popped up along with a new leaf. But, OMG!!! The STINK!!! I have never seen anyone talk about the horrible odor this thing puts out! I cut the flowers off this time in hopes of not having to live with that again. This plant lives in my bedroom. I cut them off and wrapped them up in a paper towel and a tightly closed plastic bag! However!, the smell still is coming out of the cut stalks on the plant. I don't understand if this plant multiplies by division and/or corms, why does it put out these God awful smelling flowers? Funny question, how do I keep this thing from flowering?
hi Claire i am havening trouble with Alocasia in soil & after watching your video would like to see if i can make them as healthy as yours look.Could you please tell me what type of PON to buy & where you purchase it from i would be ever so grateful.
Hi Claire, I've recently acquired an Alocasia zebrina from Lidl... Might be setting myself up for heartbreak. But could you link the Alocasia substrate you keep mentioning ? I'm wondering if "Petra" would benefit from it.
Always a debate about chopping off flowers, some people say that by the time you cut the flower off, it’s already spent the energy so there’s not too much of a point chopping it. Other people say the plant is already producing hormones so if you cut the flower, it will just keep producing flowers and drain your plant of energy even more until it decides it’s done.
I have 2 alocasias, one is the cuprea. I did put it in pon immediately and it seems to love it. Didn't loose a single leaf
ปีที่แล้ว
I just got alocasia frydek and im afraid to repot it. Was looking at different videos but nowhere if pon or leca is better for it. Also how to keep old leaves from dying when new ones come out? More feed? More light? Someone told me it doesnt like light so it wouldnt survive under grow lights in an ikea cabinet.
I need a video on pon. I have 4 Hoya in pon from a plant fair. I do not have special nutrients for the pon. Can I just use the fertilizer that I use for my soil plants? Help please?
Claire you should try out the alocasia silver giant! It has a similar coloring to the philodendron silver sword, and has a shield type shape. The second leaf I got on mine was the same size as my hand lol. It’s beautiful!
I loved this and loved your enthusiasm for pon. I just started using it about 3 months ago and for my Hoya cuttings I’m getting great results. I’m not sure about converting a plant into it, I guess I’ll just have to wing it at some point. I think my fav alocasia of yours has to be the Jaclyn, I’d love one, but I haven’t seen anything I can afford here yet in England. Another genus for me would be either Peperomia which have taken me 3 years to be successful with and Lipstick plants. I have about 5-10 of each. Both do very successfully in my south west windows, so mainly evening light in the summer. I look forward to your next video 😊
I wonder what’s the main takeaway from this video…perhaps it starts with the letter “P.” Seriously though, great video. I’m actually right now in the process of reporting my alocasia, and are waiting for my self watering pot to show up. So it’s great to see so many people with experience with semi hydro.
I have an Alocasia Amazonica that gave me seven corms, of which three are sprouting at the moment. It's my first ever Alocasia, so I'm propagating for duplicates, just in case. I can't wait to swap some of the babies, or give them away to friends. I really also want a Silver Dragon, and a Jacklyn. I live in a very small flat with okay lighting, but I can't use grow lights because of my eyes. There are so many plants I still want to add to my collection: caladiums, aglaonemas, a few philodendrons, jungle cacti, desert cacti, succulents, Calatheas, ferns...
I just got an Alocacia silver dragon, some leaves are drooping down and curled outwards. I haven't given any shock, its in a bright area... Dont know why
Hi Claire, very informative video! Question...can you please submit a video where you show the steps to take to transfer plants from soil to pon? You got me enthousiastic about pon but I have no idea how to.....
I've had this Alocasia (Amazonica?) for durn near 3 years now and it's no bigger than the wee plant it was when I first bought it. Only grows four leafs then offs one and these folks got these dinosaur-sized plants🤣
Let me know what other types of plants you'd like to see! 💚
How about focusing a video on each growth habit type of philodendron. Sometimes it’s hard to find out that info, so it would be educational, as well.
Your channel is great!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Cool. 💚 #SousaFamilyGarden 💚
Thanks.
Great Channel!
A video on changing from soil to semi hydro would be really helpful 😀

hi Claire i am havening trouble with Alocasia in soil & after watching your video would like to see if i can make them as healthy as yours look.Could you please tell me what type of PON to buy & where you purchase it from i would be ever so grateful.
Hi Claire, I've recently acquired an Alocasia zebrina from Lidl... Might be setting myself up for heartbreak. But could you link the Alocasia substrate you keep mentioning ? I'm wondering if "Petra" would benefit from it.
Yay! Alocasia’s are my favorite. I have 7 different ones. My favorites are the cuprea and nebula imperialis
Thanks Claire, I literally just did a purchase of 4 alocasia varieties (jacklyn, stingray, regal shield, varigated odora) 🤣🤣
I need a video on pon. I have 4 Hoya in pon from a plant fair. I do not have special nutrients for the pon. Can I just use the fertilizer that I use for my soil plants? Help please?
I just moved my Alocasia dark sword to leca a week ago…it’s doing so amazing already. I say move yours to PON 🤗
Claire you should try out the alocasia silver giant! It has a similar coloring to the philodendron silver sword, and has a shield type shape. The second leaf I got on mine was the same size as my hand lol. It’s beautiful!
hello there ;) beautiful alocasias, what soil mix do you use? thank you
I really want to know the name of the big leafy plant on your wall to the right hand side is called😅
Hi your plants is just as beautifull as you are😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Please make one of these videos about aglaonema! Would love to see that
I loved this and loved your enthusiasm for pon.
I wonder what’s the main takeaway from this video…perhaps it starts with the letter “P.”
Seriously though, great video. I’m actually right now in the process of reporting my alocasia, and are waiting for my self watering pot to show up. So it’s great to see so many people with experience with semi hydro.
If I have leca, will it be the same as pon for my alocasia?
The green shield looks like a picture!
I love that Alocasia Jacqueline!😍
Where is everyone getting their corms (U.S.) or are you buying plants? Thanx.
Anyone know of a good quality soil ninja or lechuza pon alternative available in the US??
❤❤❤❤❤ 32:52
Curious why you got rid of your silver dragon? It is the only Alocasia that I currently own and I love mine.
Im thinking about getting a alocasia jacklyn for my first one!
I have 1 alocasia,a sarian.i enjoy it 😁. can you put alocasia in leca and have it survive?
How do you treat for mealy bugs?
“Fun alocasia fact
…all parts of the plant are toxic…”😂😂 I’ve been obsessing over your videos, but this was hilarious 😂
Thanks, well said.
I looked up, regal shield, that one’s going to get as big as the Portadora
I've had this Alocasia (Amazonica?) for durn near 3 years now and it's no bigger than the wee plant it was when I first bought it. Only grows four leafs then offs one and these folks got these dinosaur-sized plants🤣
