Always remember that when pattern welding all of the metal from the INSIDE OUT must be at a weldable tempurature. And the outside will tend to be hotter than the inside. You have to leave the metal in the fire long enough to heat all of the metal to the right temperature. But if the fire is too hot or you leave the metal in the fire too long the outside can be come too hot or scorch and you can get weak or brittle spots once you start folding the metal or welding it. I have Blacksmiths in my family and have training as a blacksmith myself, and this is one of the things I was taught and have learned.

Excellent video, way better & more in depth info than any forged in fire show period. I've been stock removal over the years using old L6 sawmill blades & heat treating at the end. I would incourage anyone that recognizes the value of a good blade should try their hand at making their own knife & sheath. 🤙

I like the multiple pin patterns. Historically they didnt have the adhesives we have now, so pinnage was a way to increase the handle holding strength.

I'm trying to get an old style little giant powerhammer, approximately 50 pairs of tongs, and an old coal forge that the family has no interest in. Hopefully the man comes up with an agreeable price.

Seeing that you had the delamination issue because of the 1/4" pieces. Would it still be possible to get it to work if you had done a few smaller billets getting the 1/4" pieces forge welded and then stacking up the different billets and forge welding them together so that you would have been able to achieve what you were trying?

It seem a lot of forgers don't press or hammer the ends of their billet. Is that normal
I don't understand exactly what you mean.. you want to press/hammer all the way out to the end of the billet
@@FireCreekForge I watch a lot of different channels. Most of them don't go from end to end. I'm learning and trying to get proper knowledge. No one teaches forging here where I live

No, 52100 with 15N20
Try kerosene, isn't it filtered alot more.
If you find a local place that works on helecopters chances are they will have jet b fuel that can not go back into equipment it is even cleaner than kerosene and they will usually give it away since it costs more to send it back to be refined again or disposed of. Runs great in diesel equipment at a 50 50 mix too.
To be clear, I meant that the can of diesel I have is kind of dirty. But kerosene would be a good option anyway.

Doesn’t WD-40 contain silica? Does this have any effect on the end Damascus.
I don't know, but I've used WD-40 in the past with good success
I be willing to bet if you made up alot of bar stock it would sell like hotcakes. Let people build their own knives that doesn’t own a forge and hydraulic press. 🤔 just thinking out loud

If you ever go that route ive got an idea of a layered stainless or s90v
lovechild in my head of a bowie/cleaver. Basically a cleaver with a tanto point. Front heavy for chopping and with a tanto for making it fit where you want it to go

Oh I thought after you got your 200 layer stacked up or wherever it was you just stacked them you didn't weld them are you just going for a random pattern at the end it showed a little bit of the pattern it kind of looked like it was going to be a ladder but I'm not sure I'm pretty sure it's just a random

Ur mistake was ur forge welds. No hotdog weld on edge. Hamburger everything air shall not pass

i just got my press done and used it for 1st time today made a billet 52100 and 15n20 press is working good have a few bugs to work out mainly small leak here and there was a fun project will send you pics Mark 😃 do you have a email i can send to?
