      Just look at out aviation history......there are lots more. TSR2 , Miles M52, Concorde, Harrier, Buccaneer, Typhoon, Dehavelland Comet, (If it only had round windows we would be ahead in the game) BAE systems and Rolls Royce are the main contributors to the flying machine itself, However the successive governments have sold us down the river. I know its really expensive to make these machines but we are good at it. If only the government idiots, could see passed the short term. They even messed up Frank Whittles engine then scrapped it.
      By the way I do totally agree. EE lightning was phenomenal.

    Ultimately the low level attack doctrine with gravity bombs was just too costly as demonstrated in GW1. In its last years it became a useful platform with stand off weapons like Paveway IV, Storm Shadow and Brimstone.

    Younger folks, sometimes are lulled into believing that tech from before their generation is simply ridiculous, or ineffective.
    This aircraft is essentially based on the f111 aardvark. Only much more advanced.
    The capability of this aircraft is formidable even today.

    • @edmondironside240
      @edmondironside240 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was based on the research from TSR.2. Had very little to do with the F-111.
      The TSR.2 was a great aircraft shot down by the British government. The British government even ended up trying to purchase the F-111 instead. The Australian government did purchase it when TSR2 fell through….
      No this aircraft is very unique and not much like the F-111 at all except for some similar capabilities. The basis of the Tornado was the lessons learned in operating the Blackburn Buccaneer and used the terrain-following radar and radar-offset navigation technology pioneered in the TSR 2.
      The tornado was a showcase of amazing British technologies. I know it was made by Panavia and would have had invaluable input from Italy and Germany but the automatic flight system guided by radar at Mach 1.3 at sea level though terrain was a concept thought up in the UK as were the Engines which used Rolls-Royce’s three-spool turbine design coupled with the “mix and burn” afterburner system. These were British ideas.
      Although in execution none of them would have been possible without Italy and Germany in terms of the engineering effort and the financial strain involved. Germany’s MTU really helped with the HP compressor design for the very compact RB199 engines.
      I’m not sure who designed the thrust reversers on the Tornado but they are genius allowing for afterburner and Reverse Thrust on such an aircraft.
      So many unique things about this plane…

    Too small with too limited a range. Operationally slower than the Buccaneers they replaced. The ADV variant was at the time of retirement a competent interceptor of large high altitude bombers and fitted with ALARM missiles probably the best SEAD platform in the world until bizarrely the UK scrapped the ALARM missile. Ever since the RAF retired the Buccaneer it has lacked a credible medium range strike platform. Word is the BAE Tempest will be larger and longer ranged so perhaps the lesson has been learnt.

    • @sichere
      @sichere 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The MOD were determined that the RAF adopt an MRCA policy whilst the RAF still wanted a TSR2. The Tonka was a Jack of all trades and replaced the masters of theirs, the Lightning and the Buccaneer.
      Developing existing aircraft would have been far more rational and cost effective as a swing wing Lightning was already past the design stage and I can only dream of what an all composite Buccaneer with Typhoon engines would be like, far better than the F35 that's for sure.

    ....a failure of a project. ADV version was just sheer garbage. The RAF Alarm-equipped aircraft never destroyed a single radar site. The IDS, well after 6 days of getting spanked all over Iraq, they had to do a stand down and ultimately adopt the proven US tactics (stay high, use your smart bombs).....except the RAF Tornado's had no illumination capability. Just an all around piece of garbage. Imagine what the well-trained RAF crews could've done instead with a fleet composed of F15's and F15E's!!!!!

    • @joshafc41
      @joshafc41 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      According to pilots once the F3 was fully upgraded they swept the floor with F15s from BVR. The IDS completed its job and was the only aircraft capable of doing the job. Some were shot down but it was obviously a very dangerous mission flying over airfields in broad daylight to take out runways. Without the IDS the air threat to other aircrafts would have been higher....
