I haven't played this game in 10 years or more but I remember we had to wait for the opponent's turn. Why in this case he never has to wait while playing online? Are they that fast or just a game mod?
fan-made HOTA mod allows you to play simultaneously, which they do for about the first two weeks of gameplay. After that, he was just editing out the waiting. Also, a timer is built in that they limits them to very fast turns. (Usually 1 minute + 15-20 seconds per battle)

need to have Homm 3 HD+ installed.
• CTRL + Click creature = Make 1 stacks
• CTRL + Shift + left click = fill all empty slots with 1-stacks
• ALT + Click creature = Merge all stacks of clicked creature into 1 big stack
• SHIFT + Click creature = Split creature into even stacks (you can do multiple clicks to divide the stack further)
