Here it is 2020 I had that new stalk in the trunk of my 89’ caprice discouraged because I couldn’t find the connection under the dash. WELL yesterday I decided to tug on the wire till I found it. New stalk is installed , old stalk is in a garbage truck or dump & wipers are working great I followed you wiper motor video and it lead me to your stalk video . And you saved me time grief & most of all $$$$
Thanks Rob...great video and felt your frustration when the pull wire snapped. Just picked up a1990 Chevy K5 Blazer and gonna replace mine because its faded....love them old Blazers!!!
wire came off fishing through the column..been there done that in different scenarios. It's classic and happens, almost everything takes longer than it appears. kudos for not cussing on the video
I was feeling all of the frustration right there with you. I have to do this same job on my 94 Olds Ciera. I will use mechanics wire when I do it. Many thanks for sharing your experience and frustration that it's never as easy as it looks, and expressing it is something we're all gonna do. I just spent the last 10 months troubleshooting an engine that was perfectly ok, it was a low output fuel pump that was the culprit all along.
Lol this video is a lifesaver I kept it in my library I watched a few years ago when I first did this fix and my stock is giving me trouble again and I knew I watch a video before to fix it but I forgot how so glad this video is still hear. You never mentioned that plastic piece that you pulled out I guess he put that back up in their LOL part of the buttoning up process
Thanks for the tip. I just replaced the stalk on my 89 Astrovan. I could not for the life of me get that wire through. The old one was cut and everything seemed to work other then the wipers would activate randomly or when I used the turn signals. So I cut the wire off the new stalk and everything works perfect including intermittent and the wipers no longer randomly come on. The old stalk was cracked pretty badly so I figured that was the issue. So all that said, I believe that stupid wire is actually for cruise control which never worked and I never wanted to use anyhow so it saved me a headache for sure. If not for trying to get the wire through this is a 2 minute job. Pull old one off, push new one on. Done. I destroyed the new wire trying to get it through using the old wire as a snake since it was cut anyhow from the last owner. Then the connector broke off inside and prevented right turn signal from working because it was blocking the movement so I had to dig it out with a pick tool. What a PITA! If I had known before hand that was a cruise control wire I would have cut it from the get go, ripped the old original cut one out, and been done in minutes. To note I did at first try all your suggestions. I removed the plastic guide, tried different tilt positions and turn signal positions but there was no way on gods green earth that wire was getting through. I guess the Astro is a different beast from a K5. I should mention although the Astro is no where as cool as a K5 I do have this van lifted with really killer off road rims and oversize tires. Painted it all white with flat black trim. I get more stares and compliments then a Lambo and everyone asks if I am selling it. Hell no. That ones a keeper. But as with all older GM's.. it is needing constant every little thing repaired. But the expensive stuff like the engine and tranny.. bulletproof.
Axle's Garage Got it sorted now - I couldn't find a large cable tie but managed it quite quickly with a length of plastic parcel strap instead. Thanks again - I was stuck without this video!

Great video!! My truck dosen't have cruise anymore, can i just replace the stalk and cut the wires, and not bother with the wire at all? Will the wipers still work? Thanks!!
Is your hazard light switch on the right side of the steering column? Mine broke and I cannot find one like it. Only ones I can find come with the hazard switch built into the blinker arm thing like you replaced in the video.
Wondering if the connector on you new cruze control wire was thicker that the one you pulled out.? Mine is , I'm thinking if shaving it down some to slide down the shaft easier?
An old dude showed me his trick for getting wires in tight spots...Use a radio antenna...its perfect length, stiff when needed and plenty flexible when its not needed...I’ve used it for many years myself
We did not. Our cruise control components under the hood were gone when we bought the truck. Will be replacing when we find a donor vehicle at junkyard.
Check and make sure you have a good power feed, sometimes the power wire is in bad shape and although it works the current flow is so restricted it will slow the motor. Also check the ground as well.
Good stuff keep it real don't make it out to be something it's not which is a pain in the ass, to say the least, when in comparison to most DIY's videos on youtube but damn when and if you do succeed it's a good feeling lol

thanks for the video and here I thought I was gonna have to tear my whole steering column apart to put that damn wiper/cruise/turn signal stalk in my 87 V20 chevy p.s. I'll use mechanic's wire to lol
@@AxlesGarage ThaT stalk was without cruise control, correct? I thought the non cruise control model didn't have any wires, you just snapped a new one in. I gotta do that and the wiper motor board.
Finally got to test the new stalk. It didn't really fix the wiper issue as I'd hoped. Guess the problem is in the circuit board on the motor. It DID, however, fix my cruise control! Thanks for the great idea!!
Why GM fished the cruise control wire down the left side of the column instead of with the other two wire harnesses, I'll never know, lol... I suspect that the cruise control option was an afterthought. I had problems with that wire interfering with the the brights actuating rod. If I ever have to do this job, I'm going to re-route that wire down the right side with the other two harnesses. More room to play with. But you'll have to remove the steering wheel and turn signal switch to do the re-route.
Thank you - you are awesome! Love the cussing - If I was doing the video you all would have seen me throw wrenches and cussing like a mad man when I snapped the wire lol

I have always called it a stalk, have never even thought about the correct name. All the parts houses referred to it as a stalk, so good enough for me.
The stalk is the part which controls the multi function switch. If you go to the parts store and try to buy the MFS, you'll get the thing the stalk plugs into. Some vehicles have the stalk included on the MFS and not replaceable separately.
This really helps my problem is on my 1988 c1500 I do not no where does the wire connect to because I bought the truck from someone and it's just a turn signal lever without a connection wire when I bought it help help help
I don't understand how that stalk fixed anything. The stalk doesn't actually have any electrical switches inside it... except for the cruise control switch. RIGHT??? Or am I wrong??
I had the exact same thought. I wonder if some amount of wear & tear is involved on the shaft of the stalk? If it is, I would be replacing the actual switch as well on a vehicle this old just to avoid the headaches. I have a Fiero - I like to minimize the headaches as it causes enough problems all on it's own.
@@AxlesGarage thanks for the reply. I pulled off the housing and hooked the handle to a bent welding rod hung from clothes line and laterally used my weight to pull it off... holy moly!! 😅
He's right. I replaced my stalk as well and the wipers and turn signals work without connecting the wire. The wire is only for the cruise module. The wipers are controlled by the switch in the column by rotating it. I am currently going to have to replace my stalk again and possibly the switch as well. I was attempting to make a tighter connection between the chrome end piece and the stalk becasue they kept separating, creating a small space between the two. Everything worked perfectly I just wanted it to fit flush like it is supposed to. Well after making a washer out of tin foil and fitting it on the end of the chrome piece, it fit tightly but when I rotated the stalk to change the wiper speed it didn't work very smoothly and then when I rotated it back it just spun loosely and won't shut the wipers off. Apparently there is a small groove in the switch that a raised area of the stalk fits into that makes it rotate. I am hoping I can get the switch to rotate back to the off position and work again (hopefully I didn't break the groove out). My stalk will still fit into the switch at the correct orientation and engage the washer fluid when I move it up, but when I rotate it down it doesn't change the speed of the wipers ad won't shut them off. It is nice though to see a video that goes the way things always go for me. I watch these videos and everything seems to go perfect and done in 20 mins and I think I can do that. And then life happens!
Wiper Switch yes the two wires coming out of multi function lever are only for cruise. I have the wipers intermittently coming on without touching or switching the lever. The wiper switch is the round plastic piece which controls turn signals ? I changed out the control module and the didn’t work. I’m thinking something grounding out on switch.
I know exactly what's going to happen to me... I try this. Wire will break. I will figure out a way after an hour. When I test new stalk, it will not have fixed the problem. I will then have to open column like I should have done in the first place lol
