I was employed by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation authority as a track inspector with the commuter rail department. When I started in 1978, we had a dogs breakfast of equipment, some New Haven coaches dating to the 30's with soft floors, on and on. On an early departure to Providence Rhode Island, we had two NH coaches from the late 40.s and an ex PRR E-8 in primer. My engineer was an old timer former NH man by the name of Oscar Spear , great guy! Leaving Boston, there is a generally acending grade until you are a mile or more west of sharon station. It levels out at mohawk. I was amazed that the E- 8 was able to attain speeds of 116 mph ! As the shore line had cab signals, we did not slow down when we entered a fog bank west of mansfield, just blow the horn for any trespassers. Glad to see you have one ! Pete Wilson
I can't believe that I have never come across this channel before.. Very Happy that I have and can't wait to binge watch a whole bunch of episodes 😊... Also just subscribed...👍
Awesome video! E units are my favorite, as well, perhaps because I loved watching the Southern Crescent which typically had four E8s on the headend. Beautiful machines.
You too, huh? in the late 1970s I used to watch the Southern Crescent arrive and depart Alexandria Station in the evening, and then high-tail it to Van Dorn Street crossing to see it there. Every time I saw it, it had four E8s on the point. I love first generation diesels of all types, so I was over the moon to see these regularly.
Very nicely done. The E series are also favorites of mine and they look great pulling passenger cars. And , as early diesels, a modern steam locomotive like a J series or perhaps a roller bearing 4 8 4 will not look out of place parked next to an E series on anyone’s layout.
Nice little chat. I remember E’s pulling C&NW Commuter coaches into Elmhurst. Engines roaring and coaches bouncing in the middle chassis flex (while standing still loading passengers)
You may be interested in the EMD locomotives S class, B class and A class Victorian Railways and the 42 class and 421 class New South Wales EMD. The B class after retirement some were brought back into B service however the subframe, trunion area required repair and strengthening due to fatigue cracks. Some B class were rebuilt for Passenger haulage and reengined. These were double ended stream line. The NSW railways fitted operational cabs to the flat end not just hostler cabs.
I'm an EMD E & F unit fan. I have scale models of them in Ho scale. Interesting history of the E 8 behind you. First time viewer and I just subscribed.🎉👍🚄
Southern #6914 is an EMD E8 being restored at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. As I understand, all mechanical and cosmetic work is done and what remains is the electrical work.
The 6914 looks amazing! I saw her briefly during a visit to TVRM in 2021 and I can't wait to see her running again. There is just something special about Southern green on an E8!
Good report. I took out the tracks at the RF&P yard Alexandria back in 99/00. There were several locos and rolling stock that was all moved somewhere. Took 120 miles of rail and ties out of Pot yard. Talk about change! Valuable real estate!
The engine(s)-Generator is called a Tandem (at least in the US Navy). Diesel engines perform best around the 70% to 80% RPM at 70% to 80% of Load., (Not sure about some of the more modern "high" rpm diesels now-a-days). This way you can use one of the two Diesels running and the other Diesel shut-down. This also allows you to use the running diesel as a BIG starting motor to start the engine that was off when you need more power!
You should add in more details about how the units were electrically setup. Did one engine power the front two traction motors and the other power the rear two? If one diesel failed, could the until still pull, at half power? How were the two diesels synchronized? Why was 2250hp needed for only four traction motors? Was transitioning automatic, or manual on these units?
Great video. But why do we have to Watch Your Face through out the entire video while you explain things about the Loco. You should or could have pointed the camera at the loco and got close up while moving up and down the frame and showing things. Not watching you during the whole explanation. Yes it's your channel, and yes you can and will do what you want to do. But Wow what a waist of time on such really good subject and having to just Watch a close up of your Face. Wow
Was it the trump hat? You're responding like a vampire seeing a cross. It's a great video and I could see the whole unit and there was no shaking. Love the R,F, & P stuff!! Subscribed!!
@@tobylou8 Negative. I don't play the I don't like this or that. I was disappointed that we saw all of you. and very little up close of the Iconic E8 I miss the sound of that baby. It would have been nice to see up close the Trucks, and view in insides of the open doors. That's all my friend. I am not a hatter. I went through some of your content. Wow very nice. Thanks for the views. Greg NYC rail fan for life.
Thanks for sharing!
Wow, this man knows his stuff and presents it so well. Interesting info on the famous F -Units.

E8 and E9 are my favorite units too.
Great job professionally presented, engineer-like explanations. Congrats
I didn't know the truck had a passive axle, thanks for the video clip, well done and to the point.

That's when trains were beautiful
Agreed! We bemoan the lack of elegance in today’s passenger trains, too. Thanks for tuning in!
Fun video. I appreciate the brevity. Long videos are not better. Nice job.
EMD has always been my favorite. We have an F9 nearby here in Washington state that does short museum runs. Great description!

Nothing sounded like 2 of those pulling a 12 car Train to Port Jervis accelerating under the Thruway in Suffern N.Y. 😊 (EL)
As a kid in the late 50s and early 60s I spent time at Alexandria station while my mom went shopping. Thanks for the RF&P report.

Excellent video! As an engineer, I love stuff like this. Thank you!
When trains had style and made you want to take trips to who cares where!!! ❤
I miss the E-8s. Classic locomotive.
Love em myself. Hopefully, one day, that one will be made operational again.

I see you're in VA since there is a Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac boxcar behind you.
Very cool! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for tuning in! If there is ever anything you would like us to cover, let us know--and have a Happy New Year!
my fav EMD's are the GM12 and CLP (especially the AN green, yellow and silver color scheme)
Great video, thanks for sharing. PS "E" stand for Eighteen hundred HP and the model F, Fourteen Hundred HP
No, it doesn't.
@@CarlGerhardt1 I am still thinking it was a great video.
*They really need to strip her down and build her back up like new to running condition... Have seen worse get beautifully restored...*
Sheldon would like that train
E for 1800 HP, F for 1400 HP
🦁🦁🦁🦁🦁LION takes LIKE Number 90
Trains and Trump❤
You know it!! #MAGA!!
Stick to trains, Trump is a convicted felon.
I have a Lionel E unit Union Pacific 2023.
GAH! I've got tenus in my eyes! That is one rusty loco!
Put vinegar on it and see what happens!!
That hat sucks and so do your points of view considering you're willing to wear it while promoting something completely unrelated.
