    I’ve been a diesel tech for decades. While the V8’s aren’t the worst engines ever, an in-line 6 is by far the better choice for torque, stronger construction design, and can operate with much longer life.

      @@TheDieselDiaryIn the pickups, yes, especially the 4 valve per cylinder. They have much greater power and smoother than a straight 6. The torque is hard to match down low against a 6. The E9 Mack is quite the Hoss as well, it's just nobody wants to run them.

      @@HPDrifter2 Commer Knocker engines in the UK sounds really close to a Detroit at higher than idle rpms, both being 2 stroke scavenged diesels (although the Commer is an opposed cylinder engine). The Junkers JuMo 205 also sounds close to a Detroit. Like the Commer It's also a scavenged 2 stroke opposed-piston. Alas I wasn't able to find the video of a revving JuMo on the net, but one video exists of a JuMo running idle and sounding like a Detroit.

    If I may comment on the John Deere 8850 - its V8 engine was mounted directly to the Front Bogie Frame, which twisted slightly in operation. That caused issues with the overall rigidity of the block and head, so not really the fault of the engine itself, per se.
    John Kinzebaum's solution was to lengthen the Front Bogie Side Rails and install a 6 cylinder Cummins (NOT a V8 as stated in the video), engine, which itself was mounted on a seperate sub frame. The sub frame was attached to the chassis side rails, and gave a much more rigid set up, since the sub frame itself absorbed pretty much all of the twisting forces generated by the tractor when in operation.
    The chassis rails were lengthened to accommodate the fact that an inline 6 engine of similar capacity, is longer than a V8 set up.

    • @TheDieselDiary
      @TheDieselDiary  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Interestingly, that design was probably the reason the torque impacted the bearings so badly.

    • @thegreenerthemeaner
      @thegreenerthemeaner หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There was a single cradle that held all of the lower main bearings that was severely tweaked by oscillations of the front axle which led to engine failure. Kinze came up with the Sub frame idea to make clutch replacement quicker. Even the straight 6 Deere tractors he repowered get the Subframe simply for that reason. He was repowering 84/8630/40/50 series before the 8850 problem.

    • @haveraygunwilltravel
      @haveraygunwilltravel 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The 8450, 8650 had the same issue even with an in 6. If you went through a low spot at an angle the axle stop would bottom out and put stress on the block by twisting it.

    In line 6 cyl engines have 7 main bearings VS V8's that have only 5. It's a big deal when talking about durability in high HP/TQ applications

    • @turbojoe9554
      @turbojoe9554 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      what is also a big deal on the bigger inlines is the amount of twist that the crankshaft is forced to endure. V8 crankshaft is MUCH shorter, and flexes (torsionally) a lot less. On top fuel engines, for example, there can be up to a 15 degree difference between the front and rear cylinders' ignition timing due to crankshaft twisting. Imagine how much a big inline 6 would twist at those cylinder pressures. The main reason I-6's are popular in "trucking" is cost. There is one cylinder head, 24 valves instead of 32, 12 lifters instead of 16, and then maintenance-you can do an in-frame overhaul on most of them in a lot less time than a V8 would need. If the I-6 were "that" good, larger boat engines would all be I-6, but they're not-there are many V24, V16, etc. There is also a bunch of I6's but they were really smaller power unit engines and not propulsion engines for the most part of bigger ships and such.

      The depends on the Width and Diameter of the bearing. I have two 903 Cubic Inch Cummins V-8's with a Turbo. they are rated at 350 HP at 2,600 RPM's Low Rpm's should get better fuel economy .. If you want to make more power and torque at lower RPM's you need more boost. Then you need an Intercooler or after cooler.. Which the 903 Cummins does not have.

    • @fuji302
      @fuji302 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      My original reply was cut short by events out of my control.
      Because of the structure of a V8 you will not have more than 5 main bearings. There is no place to put more. There is nothing special about 7 in an I6 other than it will cost more to produce bearings and caps for the main.
      For farming all that matters is 1. Can it produce the advertised power ratings and 2. Ease of repairs and maintenance. 3. Can it farm what I need it to farm.

As far as I know these were the only tractors with an inline 8 ever made. About 400 units were manufactured. We farmed with Massey and Oliver tractors when I was kid. Our MF 1500 4WD had the v-8 Cat 3150. Made lots of noise and would pull if you kept it wound up. Constantly adjusting the depth of the disk especially on hilly ground. Our Oliver 2255 was my favorite. It was cat 3208 powered. We were told by the dealer not to lug that engine. IMO what made this tractor so great was its compact center of gravity and 3 speed over under hydraul shift. You could shift on the go to help keep the rpm’s up. Neither were fuel guzzlers. That winner was our Oliver G-1355. That 585 Moline straight 6 was very thirsty! Lot’s of low end grunt with that big inline six. Never ran a Detroit but would imagine those 2 strokers were torque monsters. Thanks for the video, brought back some great memories!

    The 1468/1568 used the DV550 from Motortruck or Payline use - originally the pumps were set to hit on 4 cylinders until the load came on - ostensibly for fuel economy. Most owners took their pumps to a shop to convert them to hit on all 8 all the time. Nice sound with twin turbos but fuel economy was less than a DT436 as in the 1466/1566.

      Please correct me. I was told the injection pump that hit on 4 cylinders at idle then 8 on demand might have been built by Holly. I saw one at an injection shop in the early '80s. Holly had no history of building farm rated diesel injection pumps. No history for any other applications either. So the farmers hated the "engine." But when the pump was replaced by a Bosch A series (I think) it was a descent engine. The Holly pump looked puny. It did not look like it was up to the task of farm life.

An International injection pump from the very early days. The Holly was short. Only 6 inches tall. It looked like it was a long as a yardstick. IMT from Yugoslavia used Mercedes Benz V engines for tractors above 150hp. A unique tractor case is a V6 Mercedes Benz OM 401 173 hp engine in an IMT 5170 and OM441 210hp V6 in a 5210 model.
    They had the potential to be decent high power tractors, but models had some design flaws, like weak differential. Since they were made in few numbers, they are hard to maintain.

    I worked on a dairy farm that bought a John Deere (can't remember the model) that was repowered with a Cat V8. I'd say a 3208 except I don't think it was out yet. It was to replace a JD 4020 that didn't have enough power to pull a 5 bottom plow in some of the heavy black soil they had. I remember my young boss bragging about what a hot deal he got at an auction when he bought it. It didn't last a month and the flywheel came unbolted and the tractor had to be split. It turned out to be a real lemmon.

    Deutz 16006 V8 articulated tractor developed of a wheelloader prototype. Deutz as a supplier of engines for construction equipment manufacturers stopped producing its own construction machinery around the end of the 1960s in order not to scare away its engine buyers. So Deutz built a tractor from the “remains” of the wheel loader. However, fewer than 100 tractors were built between 1969 and 1975. And as far I know it's the only non prototype V8 tractor build in Germany.

    I have a Massey Ferguson 1155 and I think it was one of the better V8 tractors. The engine was a good blend of power and torque that you don't miss an inline engine in that machine. I wish the rest the drivetrain was heavier because with a turbo and more power that engine would really feel like something. The 2000 series Massey Ferguson tractors had more transmission issues than engine problems. I have a Versatile 145 with a Cummins V8 a v470. The engine makes power like a petrol V8 so rev her out from 2500 to 3000 rpm to get power from that machine. Seems to be the main reason the inline engine was better the torque is down low unlike most v8s of the time. What do you think of the big IMT tractors with V6 Mercedes Benz diesel engines.

    A big issue is the main bearings, a V8 has only 5 mains for 8 cylinders, while a straight 6 has 7 mains for the 6 cylinders. The mains also tend to be narrower in a v8 to fit between the conrod pairs. As someone who moves his old tractors around with an 8V71 powered Kenworth, i think the noise makes up for any short comings!

  • @icepaddles141

    Fascinating subject for me.
    i drove a 4WD Versatile articulated tractor in the Northern Territory during the early 1980's.
    This was powered by a V8 Cummins engine and was a beast.
    At times it was used in conjunction with a D7 bulldozer with a chain pulling scrub, a task which it accounted for itself quite well , but tracks are more robust than rubber tyres....
    I will never forget the noise and the power of the thing.
    The inline six is the perfect configuration for an engine, with its inherent balance characteristics and relative simplicity.
    Modern manufacturers are going back to them.
    They make good power too.
    International made terrific inline six diesels, bullet proof.
    Not tractor engines , however , reliable 2000hp from Ford Barra engines is not unheard of

    The respiration difference between the two is remarkable. A 6cyl has a intake stroke every 120° where an 8cyl every 90°. Thats all being shared thru the same intake/turbo. Its less work to fill 6 cyl. The 8cyl has overlapping intake strokes, it needs to move more air a burn more fuel. It won't produce much more power unless it's under a heavy load. There is also something to be said for engine harmonics, things have a way of vibrating themselves loose in v8's where a 6cyl doesn't have the same buzz

I can't remember from where but I read Deere actually thought about v style engines in their 10 series new generation tractors back in 1960 but found them to be too wide and interfered with mounted cultivators and pickers. I like inline engines in tractors where you access most things from the sides and V8 diesels in pickups where you have a hood to open and have easy access to the valley.

    Vee configuration diesels have an inherent problem - you have squeeze bearings for 8 cylinders into roughly the space you would find in a straight 4.
    High bearing loads are not conducive to durability.
    Having said that, Scania seems to have succeeded and of course locomotives and ships usually have medium speed vee engines (but maybe scale and lower speeds help)

    talked to a JD engineer when he came back from the 8850 intro and he said it would have problems // to make the power and reliability the engine already had all the hot rod tricks and this was at introduction // they had to really lean on it out of the box to make it work

    John Deere also made a 6030. It was a 200 horse 2 wheel drive. They had trouble holding the horse. John Deere did not make very many. Dad traded for a 5020 put a turbo on it. I bought a 5020 with a turbo. 5020 John Deere stock 6 cylinder with a turbo is a strong dependable work horse!!!

    Shorter strokes higher piston speeds leads to higher revolution's for sane work output. Big straight sixes and 8 ling strokes lead to lower low end torque lower piston speeds, longer life.

    I like the 903 v8 the best from the older Versatile tractors another good one was the Perkins V8 in the Massey Ferguson 2805 they were what I grew up with on the farm when I was young.

    IH 1468. As A kid I use to ride my bicycle out into the country to listen to one working. Years later I got many chance to drive that same tractor some 35 or so years later as I worked as a hired hand. This farmer had two of them . One with mufflers the other straight piped with the tips curved to the front. The sound when in the field was incredible. He used these from new till he retired in 2022. On the last day that I worked for him I got to feary the straight pipe as we called it to another farm as he was getting ready for his retirement auction. A truck came up behind me the passenger rolled down his window and stuck his head out to get the full effect. They worked great for him all those years. He got more for them in 2022 then he payed for them when new. He also had a 2+2 it was a joy to work in after you got use to the nose moving while you were still going straight. Here's a link to a youtube video of the straight pipe at work. th-cam.com/video/6wr1t1Q7Hd4/w-d-xo.html

      Dont know where it went. I think it was somewhere in Illinois or Iowa. These tractors have a bad reputation. The farmer I worked for said that a lot of people really turned up the horsepower and that is why so many got 6 cylinders put in.
      . They were working them to hard and they blew up. He was very meticulous about maintenance and I am sure that helped. He never had to do any major work on them till the early 2000s. The straight pipe had the keyway on the camshaft get knocked out of place. took for ever to finger that out.
      He bought them for the fuel savings as when below a certain RPM it would shut down 4 cylinders to conserve fuel.

    • @TheDieselDiary
      @TheDieselDiary  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ many people changed the fuel pumps to run on 8 cylinders at all time, because they didn’t kick to 8 cylinders until about 80% load on the pump!

    I HAD A IHC 1468 , it was a awsome tractor its only detractor for me was the cab noise level , i would still have it today if not for an unfortunate accident it was written off . And if you ran it under 2000 rpm the fuel consumption was low then the six cyl. deleting the 4 8 ended the wear issue that hurt the 550 engines .
