      I think that time threshold varies depending on how long you’ve been playing Bethesda’s open world exploration games. I’ve been playing since Morrowind… and lost patience at about the 8 hour mark. Someone who’s never played any previous Bethesda game might last 4 times as long before getting bored.

    I don't think it's dead.
    It's more like a premature birth; only what Bethesda does to keep it alive will determine if it dies.
    I have a love/hate relationship with the game and I feel the criticisms are deserved.
    Despite the flaws and weak or missing features, I have found enjoyment in the game, playing it my way. I have some hope for its future.
    Right now I have an outpost outside New Atlantis, and it's beautiful, but I am looking at the surrounding POI's and wondering why they don't have any connection with the city.
    There is that large science facility POI that had those giant plants. Why couldn't this be repurposed to serve as a food center/farm for the city, with people living there and a small community nearby. It could be a source of quests between the people there and the city. Quests for specific organic sample from other worlds.
    All those POi's should be handcrafted to add life to the areas outside the city. There should be things and quests to discover. The major cities should feel like mini-Skyrims, not the dead areas of far away planets. The same goes for Akila. I am okay with the outer systems being the way they are, but the home worlds and nearby systems need to feel more alive.

      i couldnt really get too much into it, the game constantly crashed inbetween travel points. and the world seemed pretty lifeless. I had no interest in exploring each planet apart from doing what i needed to do on that world and leaving again. loved the ship building though. you could make some truly unique stuff.

    • @Ralathar44
      @Ralathar44 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you show in this comment exactly why Bethesda will always disappoint. The expectations on it are stupid. "The major cities should feel like mini-Skyrims" is not something any game has done at scale and I don't think it can even be done at scale while also having all the other content and systems people want. Bethesda will prolly continue to release successful yet flawed games that will continue to make money, but people will continue to have these complaints because their headcanon ideas of what the world should be a simply unachievable. And because they'll do something stupid, like focus on proc gen POIs (which is like 3% of the game) and complain about how bad they are....and yet they won't stop visiting them even though they are completely optional side content lol.

      Glad you're enjoying it! Hopefully it will have amazing improvements and new life with the DLC. We ended the video with a bit of hope, because the premise this game has is actually so good: maybe it's how it was hyped by Todd that caused 97% of Steam players to leave. If the game was advertised less like a revolution and more of a work in progress, we could've had a different situation now.
      Maybe this will be the greatest resurrection in videogames history. Fingers crossed!

    • @happyspaceinvader508
      @happyspaceinvader508 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It’s not so much the bugs as the repetitive procedurally-generated world and the fact that all travel is limited to loading screens. There’s none of the emergent gameplay you got in previous Bethesda games when wandering between locations… because you can’t wander between locations. The longer you play, the more apparent this becomes.
      Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 4 still have bugs… but are more enjoyable to play (IMHO) than Starfield. Similarly, (again IMHO) No Man’s Sky and Elite Dangerous do the whole space exploration thing better.

    In my opinion the game had potential. Even a lot of potential. I am of the opinion that the game was not broken because of the quality of the game but because Bethesda was once again extremely slow in patching. If Bethesda had reacted quickly like other developers, it could have been something.
    Unfortunately, the reality is different. In my game, for example, no trading routes still works properly today. It is purely a matter of luck whether my resources arrive or not. The game is ridiculously easy even on the highest difficulty level, starting at just under 5 hours, and it's far too easy to steal ships and the ships you can buy are far too cheap. The game offers no challenge and is simply endlessly boring after a few hours.

    • @ThisIsGAMEBREAKER
      @ThisIsGAMEBREAKER  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great points. Also, due to its procedural mechanism, is set to repeat in eternity with different but very similar repetitive situations.
      Hopefully the DLC they promised will change something.. if it ever comes out.

    • @Ralathar44
      @Ralathar44 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nah, just look at Baldur's Gate 3. The amount of problems they've caused with their patching since release is huge and they released the game unfinished having to go as far as to write in new story just to staple together the end of the game. And they did this with the same team size as Starfield but with the additional benefit of 3 years of early access where players paid them for the privilege of QA testing their game. But BG 3 got so much positive hype at release that people refuse to be critical of the game at all.
      Similarly you can look up 10+ year old threads of people trashing Skyrim and making almost every single complaint made against Starfield. Gamers are nothing if not inconsistent. End of the day, regardless of whether you have Armored Core 6 level praise or Cyberpunk/Starfield level internet criticism only the sales and playtime matters. And as of currently Starfield sales and playtime per player are both quite good still.

    I was telling somebody a few weeks ago that I thought it was only a matter of time before Bethesda faced a lawsuit over Starfield. The first promised (and paid for) DLC "Broken Space" still hasn't been released. And yes, I do think as soon as Bethesda gets sued they will slap something together and call it Broken Space just to avoid the lawsuit.
    I played the game. I enjoyed it initially, but I didn't like the ending. Your actions get really repetitive over time. And ultimately anything you do could come to an end with a single choice on your part to move to another universe. (As if Marvel and DC hadn't kill that whole concept already.)
    I swore I'd never play another Bethesda game after Fallout 76. I broke that promise with Starfield. Todd Howard is really going to have to bring something to the table to get me to break that promise again.

    • @Ralathar44
      @Ralathar44 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk didn't lose a lawsuit. Both of those were worse, NMS specifically was way worse. Starfield isn't even at risk of a lawsuit. The fact that many people can say or support ideas like this vs Starfield while non-ironically going to bat for modern No Man's Sky is honestly pretty funny though.

      @@ThisIsGAMEBREAKER TBH the game actually has like 300+ hours of unique hand crafted content. But people are so brainwashed to "turn off brain, visit nearest POI" that after realizing they didn't like proc gen POIs (which is fair, many criticisms about them are valid) THEY KEPT GOING TO THEM. I think they brainwashed an entire generation into not knowing how to explore an open world game on their own with Skyrim. People didn't explore Skyrim or discover things, not really, people just went from UI marker to UI marker led around by the nose. And so they kept visiting the proc gen stuff and missed most of the handcrafted content.
      Ironically despite the complaints about exploration, Starfield actually does reward exploration alot more. Realizing quickly the naming scheme/setup of proc gen POIs you start looking for uniquely named POIs and you do so from the star maps or in cities. You listen for conversations, you talk to people, you follow up leads, and you find the content. instead of just someone with a dog treat in front of you saying "this way puppy, now this way puppy, ok now this way puppy" instead you're more self directed in Starfield. You hear stuff is going on in the well and this pops up in your activities log like a journal note. So now you gotta find where the well is and then go poke around. And in doing so you find a bunch of quests and small storylines down there. You walk around and explore and talk to a scientiest who's all about this dang tree and get tired up on a scientific dispute. In Skyrim almost all of this woulda been spoon fed to you to make sure the little helpless puppy didn't miss it. Right down to sending couriers to start quests telling you exactly where to go.
      Ironically I think the modern Skyrim audience would hate a new Elder Scrolls game that behaved like Morrowind and gave you freedom and required you to explore self directed and put stuff together yourself.

    • @djohn2591
      @djohn2591 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Ralathar44 I enjoyed morrowind. It required you to explore, but starfields exploration hits differently. I can deal with the loading between doorways and cave entrances better than I can with the loading between planet--> to space--> to orbit of new planet--> to new surface landing. These breakups make it feel much more like small broken chunks instead of one large cohesive world, and it hurts my immersion. I find it very easy to drop this game after an hour vs morrowind, fallout NV, skyrim, oblivion, or FO4 which keep me hooked for multiple hours. I finished star field only twice and it was through the shear force of willpower that I got there. I'm not saying it's a bad game but I will say it's my least favorite of the group.

    • @Ralathar44
      @Ralathar44 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@djohn2591 You can actually cut out like half the loading screens if you do as much traveling from the cockpit as possible.
      Personally, as video game QA, I have no illusion that any game is anything but smaller broken chunks and the loading screens are eyeblink long so they didn't bother me. But I'm not gonna say you're wrong by being bothered by them. If you can maintain the illusion of a single large cohesive world in a game then by all means go for it.
      But for example in a game like Elden Ring or Horizon Zero Dawn i'm completely aware of the general spawn radius and how stuff im not looking at either isnt being rendered or doesn't even exist at that moment or etc.
      You get upset that you can see the man behind the curtain. But I'm ALWAYS aware of the man behind the curtain. TBH if anything it only increases my enjoyment of games because when it (ofc) turns out to be the illusion of choice (I'm looking at your Bladur's Gate 3 act 3) instead of actual choice I'm already expecting it. And when the game pulls tricks to make its tiny viable playspace around you look like its a big seemless open world I'm aware of that too. I don't need to see cut scenes or spawn ins to know that. I know a reasonable amount of how the sausage is made lol.
      IMO something like loading screens and the idea of a single seemless world is a marketing gimmick. It's literally all in your head. i care more about how something plays, its writing, its story, its progression, its economy, its exploration, its economy, etc. But, I don't blame the industry for marketing things like that to yall. Clearly its effective as your reply demonstrates. But one day, with enough time and experience, that illusion will break for you too. It's only a matter of time.
