Pro tip from tattooer here : those scabs on first week of tattoo are actually dry biological matter, if you wanna get rid of it you can submerge your skin in clean lukewarm water to re-hydrate them and making it gooey texture then gently wipe them away with your clean hand. :) And thanks for all the great content, I've been binge watching it while drawing !! Cheers from France
My tattoos never scab. I’ve done countless tattoos and it might have a light flake on the larger pieces my clients get but that is it. Haven’t had color fall out or empty line fall out luckily but I’m also told I’m pretty feather handed? I wonder why so many scab so heavily but I’ve legit never had a scabbed client 🤷🏼♂️even my own skin has scabbed getting work. Not sure on the science behind it 🤔
@@pfang7229 It depends heavily on the technique used, fat lines color packing and such disrupt more the layers of skin so lymph tends to be more present at the healing stage, hence "scabs". If you're into fine lines, whip shading, dot work etc, lymph production is minimal in my experience. Some clients lymph heavily during tattooing tho, in my experience the smell of "raw meat" is a dead givaway of the lymph activation by the skin.
I work as a receptionist (hopefully apprenticing soon) and I always direct first-timers to the agedtattoos subreddit so they can know what to actually expect.
Funny, I have a tattoo that goes from my ankle to my armpit. It's about 20 years old, and I wear shorts alot, farmer tan legs. And I have gained weight in that 20 years. So it's all over the map of changes but it still looks good to me!
finally someone who admits they pick their tattoos 😭😭 i always try my very best to not pull anything where it would feel like im actually ripping skin? but i like pulling the parts off that are lifted from the skin already anyway, and the part thats still connected to the skin under it stays mostly on. i know its better to not do it at all but like....HOW 😂 im a fiddly fuck, when theres something i can fiddle with i WILL sorry @ my tattoo artist😞
I do exactly the same thing! I try really hard not to pick, but if it’s mostly lifted off the skin already then it’s coming off 🤣 All my tattoos have healed fine, I do make sure I only touch them with clean hands and I do use ointment to help keep them moisturised. Maybe I’m just lucky, lol!
What brought me to my tattoo artist was seeing his work and really digging it. What had me coming back was him chatting with me through the appointment and making me feel super comfortable through the whole process. Made me love getting tattooed, despite the searing pain of two 6+ hour sessions.
Going to a tattooer who makes the whole thing a pleasant experience is really important. I'm running out of space for what I want done and if you've got an attitude, ghost me, come super late to the appointment, rebook tons of times, act like I'm inconveniencing you, forget I've got an appointment with you (all of these things have happened to me before), I'm simply not going to you again, if at all. Doesn't matter how much I like your tattoos. If you're professional about the whole thing, you can bet I'm coming back.

Bro you're my go-to for tattoo related content. I'm currently paranoid because I got a bug bite riiiight on a line of a 4 week old black and grey piece. Shits raised up, but I'm not itching at all. You think I'm good if I just leave that shit alone? Preciate ya
This sounds like a comment I could have made. I know _exactly_ how you feel. I got an ingrown hair right on a line of a fresh tattoo and I couldn't stop thinking about it. I would go to the bathroom and look at in in the mirror literally every 5 minutes because I was so stressed about it. I'm here to tell you: you will be completely fine. The tattoo will be perfect after the bite is gone. If for any reason it's not fine, I'm sure the artist would love to touch it up for free. You've got nothing to worry about.
12:57 looks like a bump. I had something like this happen while my back tattoo was healing. One day I looked at it in the mirror and there was a little skin growth that looked exactly like this. Tattoo artist touched it up, no big deal.
I progressively developed an allergy to second skin. So much so that this last tattoo, the saniderm basically fell off and left chunks in my arm around the tattoo. iI was glad it fell off and didn't adhere to the tattoo itself. So, this is my first time healing without saniderm and it's been a learning experience. So far so good. The first 5 tattoos with saniderm had minor scabbing and this time there has been a lot of scabbing. I found that interesting. One more thing. You are so correct. I got into tattoos in my 50s. I go back to the same artist (trad tattoos) because...frankly, he's a super guy and I really like him. I feel he gives me his all and he has my best interest in mind. He doesn't rush me away and he's just a cool dude as well as great artist. We click. I just went to a blackwork tattoo artist and it was the same thing. Super nice guy. I would recommend either of these guys because they are just the kind of people I know would make someone have a great experience. It means a lot.
16:45 - Tattoo Peter suggested this (for healing (less scabbing), and to retain colour / ink density (and I’ve found that it works): Raw, cold-pressed, coconut oil.
I love picking scabs, I don't take em if they're stuck to the skin but you know when they've lifted but the edges surrounding the tattoo site are still stuck with an atom of translucent skin? They get it. Helps them not get torn up.
I always assumed there was a reason I didn't see many older fine line style tattoos. Like maybe there's a reason the professional doesn't want to do the thing I'm asking for.
I did a colored eye on my arm. Scabbed on the color of the iris. Pulled off that little scab during sleep woke up and knew I did from little blood. lost color there so it definitely can happen but idk about that guy my outline isnt as defined
Any kind of injury/damage that compromises the skins barrier will end in a scab/drying of the skin. It’s a natural part of the healing process, a defence mechanism to stop blood loss, it’s a shield to protect the wound. Keep it clean and moisturise, it should be fine. No “special” expensive products required :)
Love seeing the Sak Yant process and love! It is also in the Cambodian culture. I received my Sak Yant tattoo in my dad’s village in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Phenomenal experience

I picked my artist because I loved her work when I saw it on my friend, and when I went in to get tattooed it turned out she grew up right near me, so she actually knew the kind of unusual flower I wanted. She is awesome. The tattoo turned out awesome. I’ve had it for 20 years. I wish I’d gotten more from her when it was easier to book her, she’s kind of well known now. Mine is color realism kind of, but eventually she started getting more traditional and I’ve held off because I didn’t really want a traditional tattoo and I sure as hell wasn’t going to tell her to work in a style she’d outgrown artistically, the reason it came out so good is because I found someone I trusted. Watching these has kind of changed my mind about going back to her and getting something more traditional.
8:56 my grandpa had a old panther tat was so blown out and he had a massive cut through it but damn that was an old school fucking tat. I think my first tattoo might be a panther
I accidentally scratched the scab off my arm tattoo on my cars center console the day after i got it and had to get it touched up bc that shit was GONE. it's also just a bad tattoo so i had to get the whole thing touched up months later by someone else.
I like the look of fine line tattoos but I think the whole trend of 'get the tiniest daintiest finest line tattoo ever' has to die. They never heal right
Im guessing my tattoo artist is pretty damn good. After watching your vids and listening to all the technical stuff...... I have a 20 year old tat with putple ants that looks just as good as the day it was put on. Cool! I really lucked out! I just looked at it up close and that putple is still so bright and gorgeous! Lines are still same width and sharp even though thay have gotten slightly wider. Guess i heal great and my macrophages know not to fuck up my tats too!🤣🤣🤣
I have had a partial cover up with lots of saturated color pn my thigh and parts of the tattoos really scabbed over with thick crust. And one of my pet rats tried to jump on my leg but slipped off and took a chunk of scab with him. It definitely took a chunk of ink out, but its not perfectly skin toned, its still patchy/ hazey colored! Its a nice reminder of my rat now that hes gone, but yea, I try to stay away from picking and my rats with healing tattoos :D
Agree with the black rose tattoo! That probably had a full crust on and might’ve seemed like it healed poorly to the client and they might’ve even blamed themselves 😅 for whatever reason, shame is usually why, imo, why the “4 yrs later” …I think you’re right on the money that it was poor from the jump and right when I was healed it looked like that. I’ve seen so many like this
So true man, I would much rather go to a place and they make me feel like the homie then go to somebody super famous and feel awkward as fuck while I’m getting a 5 hour tattoo.
Hey Kirk, I love your videos! I subscribed after the first video! I am sure you get this all the time but I’m just curious how bad your palm tattoo hurt? I have the tops of my hands tattooed and my fingers but I really want to get something simple on my palm but I’ve heard it’s like the worst spot to get tatted. My most painful tattoos have been my neck and a traditional rose on my elbow which was terrible! Thanks brother keep up the great work!
imo fine line can look pretty rad for shading. at least the tattoo i got now 10 years on the fine line shading has definitely faded but it looks like a nice textured gray, almost crosshatching style with a smudged pencil. with the bold black outline it still looks good a decade on + weight gain. wouldnt look as good without the bolder outline though
Okay officially need to get tattooed by you so I can pick my scabs cuz I also love to pick shit and it is HELL not being able to pick at tattoo scabs XD
I always always pick at my tattoos. I will stand in front of a mirror with tweezers picking at them. I do however use second skin and I don’t pick until like day 5 or 6 and yeah.. When I was a teenager I let my friend tattoo a heart on my foot and the next day I tried to dig it out with no luck. I go to 2 different artists and one is heavy handed the other is light. The light handed tattoos always flake and make for much better peeling. The darker deeper tats kinda suck to peel.
I had a friend who loved Oasis! Had there logo on the back of his neck, nice small but alot of black, 2 weeks in the sun in summer and it blistered and burst
A & D ointment is all I’ve ever used and I have never had a problem. Big tattoos, small tattoos, I treat them all the same. Wash gently with a mild soap and water pat dry and keep ointment on for the first week or until it’s healed. It’s not rocket surgery.
The only one I had scab up was using second skin but after a few weeks leaving it alone to do its thing it came out perfectly fine no different to the flaky ones. The place I go to has a sponsorship deal thing with an aftercare company and it works amazing for me I wouldn't use a different brand and I do recommend people to use them if they get them but to test it on unbroken skin first see if you have a reaction first and if not you'll probably be fine. They also ban numbing cream and they can tell if you have it because the skin reacts differently and doesn't hold ink properly and they just refuse because it wont look as good as its their name on it so they just rebook you and say don't do it again or we keep the deposit.
I’m 46 my first tattoo was at 20 and my last was a year ago I have 20 in total some have aged great I have a sshhhh on my inner middle finger and it looks like I got it yesterday and it’s something I got in 2014 others kinda look a lil distorted but I also have lupus and Sjogrens both autoimmune diseases and my artist hates my skin 😂
My first tattoo was a black skull and it's a little crumbled and getting more so every year. I've gotten some more traditional style tattoos from the same artist and they held up good so far. Sucks that the skull didn't but at least it was a learning experience
Yeah I’ve never had a client scab even in my newbie apprenticeship?? Flake lightly but no scabs 🤔. You don’t have to go so hard it the skin or use higher voltage because it’s not packing 😅 that’s literally just hella damaging skin. I never use product I leave it up to the client. Quick rap up to protect them for a couple hours upon leaving but that’s it. Know your skin and take care of it before your tattoo and after.
Thank you so much for thinking I am strong enough to do my full stomach without numbing cream, because I sincerely will never do it once I feel the pain. I also have terrible reflexes and I can’t be kicking for hours.
About the artist not the artwork: I worked with a fantastic artist for my arm sleeve and my back, but dude was IMPOSSIBLE to get into the damn chair. 9 appointments and only 1 of them actually went on the day we scheduled. he constantly had some other shit come up and he bumped my apt. Im lucky my job lets me pick days in the middle of the week but i imagine other people would have to take days off only to get bumped so they wasted days off. After he cancelled a few he didnt even apologize anymore, he just cancelled it than absolutely would not work with me on picking another day. great artist and im planning to go back to his shop but almost zero chance im going back to him.
I gotta say. Good tattoos scab! Bag Balm for the first 3 days WORKS!! That's it! Period. End of sentence! P.s. popping open a couple Vitamin E capsules spread a Lil bit over the work.
Why is it hard to do wrap around tattoos? I’ve always wanted a snake wrapping around my arm as a coverup tattoo (and even as a kid, pre needing a scar coverup) Is it worth risking, or better to settle for a simpler design?
Yo Kirk, when you say colors crumble like yellow and gray, is it the color, or the brand of color the tatter is using? You show some pics where those colors look great. Do some color brands work better than others?
TLDR listen to your artist if they say 'this tat wont age well'. I got some fine line tattoos when a girlfriend of mine finished her apprenticeship and felt this was her style. A couple years in most look pretty blurred out, I don't regret them and they're hella unique but yea, didn't stand the test of time, weigh gain/loss/gain/loss and hitting my 40s lol. I don't blame her though, she did a great job they were just doomed from the jump. Its funny bc my brother also tats and for years I thought maybe he sucked because he loves doing traditional styles, blackouts (he's got incredible consistency!) and just big ass tattoos with fat lines, always tried to sway me away from fine line stuff when I'd bring him an idea...but almost all his tats I got in the last 15 years still look great, except the one fine line bird he begged me not to get 4 years ago that looks like shite now lol. Literally every time he sees it he's like "I fucking told you not to get that..." lol
The only time I ever used numbing cream was I started a tattoo then got it finished like 5 days later. On the calf and ngl without it I would’ve tapped out. But yeah for the most part you don’t need it.
I'd definitely be a picker too but my tattoo didnt even have any scabs for me to pick at haha. This russian dude just put one of those single use pads over my shoulder and it healed perfectly. All I used was Bepanthen, then coconut oil. Nothing special
Most people don’t want to be going through 8/10 pain when they don’t need too , that being said clients should plan ahead of time applying the numbing cream before session so Kirk can be Quick Convenient and Comfortable 😭👍
I have chronic eczema and I’ve always wondered how tattoos heal on my skin type 🤔 different people say different things. Do you have experience tattooing people with auto immune issues?
Hey, there are lots of tattoo artists who will put a few tiny dots of the ink colors you want in a hidden area so you can see how your body reacts to the ink and shock of tattooing! So I would do that to find out! If stress triggers your eczema, keep in mind that getting a tattoo is a stressfull event for the body. But you can definitely try. Maybe there are subreddits or other forums you could check out for other peoples experiences! Good luck!

A & D ointment is all I’ve ever used and I have never had a problem. Big tattoos, small tattoos, I treat them all the same. Wash gently with a mild soap and water pat dry and keep ointment on for the first week or until it’s healed. It’s not rocket surgery.
Fine line has been a pain in the ass for me 3 out of 4 times. Ive ruled it out. Only “regular” lines for me now
The only one I had scab up was using second skin but after a few weeks leaving it alone to do its thing it came out perfectly fine no different to the flaky ones.
I used to heal mine w vaseline, worked wonders for me ! Then an artist introduced me to dermalize. My inked life has changed forever. ❤
"A listers like Steven Segal" i assume he misspoke and ment to say C listers
I have two full sleeves and half my leg done and haven’t scabbed once, it just peels and that’s it
I’m 46 my first tattoo was at 20 and my last was a year ago I have 20 in total some have aged great I have a sshhhh on my inner middle finger and it looks like I got it yesterday and it’s something I got in 2014 others kinda look a lil distorted but I also have lupus and Sjogrens both autoimmune diseases and my artist hates my skin 😂
“That’s how it’s gotta be” whatever you gotta do to make it come out good lmao I’ll cry for a good tattoo 😂
My first tattoo was a black skull and it's a little crumbled and getting more so every year. I've gotten some more traditional style tattoos from the same artist and they held up good so far. Sucks that the skull didn't but at least it was a learning experience
You should do a video rating subscriber's tattoos.
😂 😂 Steven Seagal an A- lister?! Haha!!
I only have one tattoo but it's big and took 4 sessions because I can only handle 2-3 hours at a time. It never scabbed at all 🤔
Yeah I’ve never had a client scab even in my newbie apprenticeship?? Flake lightly but no scabs 🤔. You don’t have to go so hard it the skin or use higher voltage because it’s not packing 😅 that’s literally just hella damaging skin. I never use product I leave it up to the client. Quick rap up to protect them for a couple hours upon leaving but that’s it. Know your skin and take care of it before your tattoo and after.
You should do a video about prison tattoos!!
Thank you for being a voice of reason in a sea of misinformation.
My whole hand and fingers are all Sak Yant
Thank you so much for thinking I am strong enough to do my full stomach without numbing cream, because I sincerely will never do it once I feel the pain. I also have terrible reflexes and I can’t be kicking for hours.
W sub growth recently
Yo a mickey full back tat is crazy.
I scab almost every time somewhere in there lol😂
I gotta say. Good tattoos scab! Bag Balm for the first 3 days WORKS!! That's it! Period. End of sentence! P.s. popping open a couple Vitamin E capsules spread a Lil bit over the work.
I want to send this guy a pic of my recent tattoo disaster - it’s epic and tragic
Why is it hard to do wrap around tattoos? I’ve always wanted a snake wrapping around my arm as a coverup tattoo (and even as a kid, pre needing a scar coverup)
Is it worth risking, or better to settle for a simpler design?
Sak Yant’s are awesome and the tattoo cost him $130 which is killer
Yo Kirk, when you say colors crumble like yellow and gray, is it the color, or the brand of color the tatter is using? You show some pics where those colors look great. Do some color brands work better than others?
Ive never lost any ink from picking out a scab .
The Scab MASTER lol
woah youre blowing up dude found you at 5k
I personally think the guy with stretch marks looks really cool
Makes it look like one of those old paintings on paper that is crumbled up something
I'm gonna keep my hands black and red, with the occasional palm/wrist pop lmO
The only time I ever used numbing cream was I started a tattoo then got it finished like 5 days later. On the calf and ngl without it I would’ve tapped out. But yeah for the most part you don’t need it.
I want a back piece from Andy so badly
Kirk please bro, never ruin your face with a tattoo 💪.
They arent bad , but you have a nice face my dude.
I'd definitely be a picker too but my tattoo didnt even have any scabs for me to pick at haha. This russian dude just put one of those single use pads over my shoulder and it healed perfectly. All I used was Bepanthen, then coconut oil. Nothing special
My last sleeve session has 2 huge scabs. One is almost gone and didn’t leave any marks on the tattoo, but the other is so bad. Pray 4 me 😢😂
The stretch marks honestly look pretty cool.
Most people don’t want to be going through 8/10 pain when they don’t need too , that being said clients should plan ahead of time applying the numbing cream before session so Kirk can be Quick Convenient and Comfortable 😭👍
I want people to know I was watching Kirk Fagan Tattoo PRE face tattoo. time capsule comment
Good luck!
@@rockabillymuffin thank you so much for the tips!!!! My eczema is definitely triggered by stress so you make a great point. i hope you have a wonderful day 🫶🫶
Another classic by traddy daddy
I pick my scabs and my wives every time I tattoo her as well lol
