  • Hey guys my name is Masud and in today’s video I’d like to discuss the importance of protecting your mental health as a physiotherapist.
This video will appeal to not only physios but other health professionals as well.
I’d like to begin by telling you a little story about a particular patient I was seeing this week which made me think about this specific topic.
    Just a bit of context..
They had sustained a recent whiplash injury following a road traffic collision. So I was seeing them because of their legal claim for treatment of their injuries.
They usually speak with their g.p prior to being referred for any assessment.
And this patients complaint was that doctors and g.p’s in particular never listen to them and just give them painkillers.
The only time they ever do listen is when they’re bleeding or about to die.
Now I can totally understand the patients perspective as I’ve personally witnessed this myself.
However my response to their concerns were a little in different.
I explained to them that that doctor had probably or was going to see another 15 or so patients with very similar concerns during that day.
Understandbly they will after a few years of practicing not be as attentive to injuries which they perceive as high priority.
    Why is that?
Well from a physio perspective, I know in a day I also see about 16 people a day each one with their own pain and concerns that I have to manage and to be totally honest it gets so draining after a while of listening to peoples pain and giving yourself to them.
It takes a lot of energy to sit their and take in peoples pain again and again and again, 16 times in a day, 80 times in a week, 320 times in a month.
It definitely does impact on your mental health as to do it can be quite exhausting.
You have to sit their and listen and show empathy through your actions and tone and body language and the way you interact will the patient all impact on their perception of you and how they feel in terms of their overall recovery process - do they feel heard? Do they feel safe ? Do they feel like you know what you’re doing?
    A lot of considerations.
I know what you’re probably thinking, well Masud if that is the case, why did you or any other health professional choose to go into healthcare?
That’s a good question and probably another video for another day.
But coming back to the point, you can see how tiring it can be to work as a physiotherapist sometimes.
So what are some things you can do to help you destress?
    1. Go to the gym
    2. Speaking with other physios in the same area
    3. Go for a night out with friends
These are some things which have helped me in the past and I’m sure could help someone else as well.
What are some things you do as a physio to help protect your mental health?
Let me know down in the comments
    Thanks for watching!

Good video, its true and its unavoidable to get into that state, it happens in every job - you get put under pressure to see X things done by Y point in time and you end up having to just robot thru and get things done rather than dealing with things in the ideal way

Im a health professional but it shouldn't be the patient's responsibility to understand the health professional it should be up to the health professional to push back to system and organizational structures so that they don't have to lower their standards of care or accept that they aren't able to follow their professional codes of conduct. You should treat each person the way you would expect to be treated....simple as that.
