    Hi, quick question; if the bottom layer was an impermeable layer, and had a value of S less than 1, would you still subtract the u value from the layer above it when calculating the effective tension?

    doubt1 -how we decide slope for effective stress when plotting the diagram?
    doubt2 -plz explain how effective stress changes from 34 to 44 at top of capillary zone

    • @APSEDUVERSE
      @APSEDUVERSE  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1. For slope we can take y=mx where y is the stress and x is depth so m is obviously unit weight of soil. If unit weight is more then effective stress increase will be more for a constant depth which means the slope is more.
      2. The value of neutral pressure is 0 at the water table i.e. the surface at which pressure is equal to atmospheric pressure but that is different from capillary zone. In capillary zone the water is in tension and capillary zone is measured from water table in the upward direction. Here we have taken compressive stresses as positive so we take tensile stresses as negative and effective stress = total stress - neutral stress, neutral stress is negative so it becomes effective stress = total stress + neutral stress. so total stress at 2m is 34 kpa and neutral stress is -10 kpa so the effective stress is 44 kpa.

  • @shaykhabid07
    @shaykhabid07 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can't we join the slope in case of effective stress diagram from zero to 44(linearly) , why is there a jump..?

    In first question what will be the pore water pressure of each case immediately after application of external stress. Why we haven't considered the excess pore water pressure in calculation?

    • @APSEDUVERSE
      @APSEDUVERSE  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Considering the stress is applied for a long period of time

  • @lavkumargupta1143

    Can we say that due to capaliary rise effective stress will always increase ?

    • @APSEDUVERSE
      @APSEDUVERSE  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, for the depth of soil saturated with capillary water.
