It was either that or die thebromans would execute him for what they believed was desertion of the other gladiators didn’t kill him in his sleep for being a Roman soldier
As the Numidian said earlier, the animals are worth more than they. Human life was plentiful, short, hard and cheap. There was no shortage of men with limited skills and a lot of muscle from hard labor. Who knows why the scribe was there - maybe a punishment for getting frisky with the wrong man's lady.
@@613harbinger316Not true at all. People were not in abundance as they are today. Gladiators were valuable assets and rarely died in the arena. Out of ten warriors, maybe one would be slain (and they were likely not terribly healthy or talented to begin with).

No, the director's cut was the original shorter perfect version you saw in theaters and VHS/DVDs. What you're seeing here is the new extended edition with bloated tacked on scenes made to sell 4k blurays.
I remember watching this movie and getting scandalized because the owner of Maximus offered him a boy! And later watching Rome on HBO I saw Octavian being offered a boy prostitute in a brothel.
Love the movie but he sort of had a template to copy off as he copied it word for word of the 1960s movie fall of the Roman Empire 😂. Still he perfected it. Just everything fell into place. What works is it’s sort of believable. He’s a top Roman general so means he has a back story of being hard as dick. You don’t get to that level in max case without years of fighting. So that sets him up for being a good and fearless fighter and he also has a political setting. Conspiracy’s and murder amongst the emperors happened all the time. And they were brutal like the crucifixion and murder of his family. While in the arena, gladiators were the first superstars. So if he was popular with the masses it would be hard to take him out. So everything sort of just interlocks. Then you have kingdom of heaven(not the extended edition). A mere blacksmith finds out his dad is a lord and within weeks he’s a badass fighter and leading armies and been asked to take the throne of Jerusalem. And the fact he was a bastard this just wouldn’t happen. Everything was rushed etc and this is where Scott has failed in his movies. He just cannot seem to get anything as spot on as he did gladiator. This is why I think he should moved into making series so he could take his time to tell the story which we all know he is capable of.

A scribe who speaks 7 languages? Only a fool would waste such a talent in the arena.
Yeah the only plot hole in this movie is who pays for strong healthy working men and expects them to all die in their first day on the job 😂

Maximus not fighting back only means that he absolutely has nothing to prove to anybody. That takes real balls.

"will that not anger them?"

what a scene.
