RAD: Volvo EZ Pack Trailer

  • Here's a truck you all were shown in January, RAD's custom rear loader. It's a Volvo tractor pulling a trailer-mounted EZ Pack Goliath body. One of a kind unit, only similar trucks like this I've seen were by the late Chagnon in Canada.
    I've been promising more video since then and I can finally say I've delivered. After a few failed attempts, Andrew and I made our way out to Queen Creek on Veteran's Day for the Wednesday route's monthly bulk cycle. After initially finding another crew in one of RAD's Metropaks, they were nice enough to call Bob (driver of this beast) and ask where he was, allowing us to find him way faster than we would have ever been able to left to our own devices.
    For those wondering, RAD owns about 4 rear loaders. Two WXLL Metropaks, this articulated EZ Pack, and a straight-framed Volvo Heil F5000. RAD offers bulk service on a monthly basis, cycling through their municipalities on the 1st-3rd Wednesdays and hitting up their HOAs and individual customers divided between 4th and last Wednesdays (effectively creating a lighter work load on certain months).
    Huge thanks to Bob for allowing us to follow and film your extremely unique truck for a good part of the day, and happy (belated) Veteran's Day. Hope your daughter and grandkids enjoy seeing you again!
    Thanks all for watching, please remember to leave a like and a comment!

    YAS! Has to be one of my favorite trucks you have filmed! Such a unique truck, with quite the sound to it! Sounds just like 015301 the Volvo Xpeditor E-Z Pack CABQ SWMD has. The take off sound to this truck

    Kind of amazing the engine lugs down as much as it does at 16:00, must have been really full.

      Yeah, I'm sure it was after a full day of nothing but bulk trash.

      It doesn't sound like the engine is trying as hard as it could though. Engine set at a high RPM but not able to go 'full throttle' even tho diesels do not have a throttle, at least old ones. It lugs down even when just moving the blade wrist up at the beginning of the cycle.

    And deliver you did. So I was watching this over lunch, on my phone. As you can imagine that requires one to look away from the video once in awhile to the plate in front of me...but each time I focused on the chicken at hand, there was this overwhelming desire I felt to look back, to ensure the video hadn't just changed to some sort of trash truck from Edco in one of my own videos. No, this thing just happens to have the exact same engine, L10 I'm sure, and the exact same revolutions thanks probably to another RAD 'speedup stick' ...thus the exact same sound. Clearly, video took priority over chicken. I made it most of the way through, actually, before deciding it best to stop and watch on a big screen with big sound from the start. Plus you deserve all the revenue this vid can get so more views the better. One thing I was hoping I'd see, and certainly did, is the effort you made to show the whole truck in numerous cul de sac scenes and driving shots. As far as visuals go I think 16:40 was the best, and even though there was some lapse in revving there we got it all back in the opening of the next clip. Another element I probably enjoyed even more than looks was the hectic, fast-forward pack cycles. Not just because bulk is most fun to see ingested at a (hella dangerously) quick rate, but a Goliath running this way is unheard of. The sweep cycle closing fast, stopping abruptly, and then the whole thing swinging in and up without the resistance that you know is actually there...it all comes off as more mechanical/robotic than usual. And 4:43 is kind of the best sound, that full rev that's under just a little resistance (also heard whenever the blade lowers), this beautiful audio seems best represented from the angle at 4:43 so that whole clip was a special joy. But chuckles at the clip encompassing 7:00, if you try to say anything like Bob sort of did, you have to completely yell. Blue collar joys 100% right there, and not so much the case for MSLs I already compared this sound too, since it's start-stop, start-stop....not sustained like this. Then in 7:00 again I just noticed the slow rolling strobe lol, nbd in comparison to the bestial insanity that's happening under the doghouse and in the hopper. Other than a note about how your editing keeps improving with each upload, I think that's all I'm gonna say for this round. No doubt future visits will summon other thoughts..Fav of course

      +Trashman242 When the filmed it the first time last year I definitely related it to sounding like an MSL too haha. I wish I could have gotten more driving shots, but with only one or two stops per neighborhood it was fairly impossible to predict where the next stop will be. Glad you did enjoy what I got though, there's another clip of him in a cul-de-sac up on my Flickr but being that I'm responding a month after you posted this, you've probably already have seen it haha. As for the lapses in revving, when I was filming this I kept loosing sight of how loud this truck really is until it all stopped and there was silence. My camera's mic really doesn't do it justice - there's much more contrast in person. I have to agree with you about how impressively fast and effective the blade was with bulk. I was originally surprised they'd use an EZ Pack for bulk as I kind of assumed it would choke constantly. Sure proved me wrong, after seeing their F5000 struggling through a pile this truck could (literally) run circles around it. Thanks for the meaty comment as always, despite it taking forever to reply too haha, and of course the note about my editing - much appreciated since I'm always trying to improve it.

    Really enjoyed this one, obviously an interesting unit. That has to be the fastest EZ-Pack I've seen. I will say though, to me it seems weird they went with this setup. The only time it would make sense to me would be if the body was too long for a traditional straight chassis.

    Wow! Great vid Christian! Absolutely love the sound of this truck, especially at 3:32! Nice loud mean growl! Can you please do a special video for me? I want you to get this truck shifting through the gears from in the cab. I don't care if you give the driver the camera or what, I just want to hear this truck shift through the the gears, to see if the transmission slips into 4th and 5th gear. Please let me know what you can do on that. Please, do it as soon as possible.

    Awesome! I've been waiting for more footage of this truck! By far one of my favorites in Arizona for many reasons. First, of course, its a Rear Loader on a trailer - what a weird concept to fathom with 99% of all others being on a fixed chassis. This Volvo's take offs were fantastic as well. Interesting curved shape of the hopper sweep. By the way, whats up with E-Waste being mixed with the trash? Like that TV just being thrown in in the first clip?? Maybe AZ has different recycling laws than CA? Anyway, I wish there were more trucks like this in the industry, but I guess having fewer of them makes them more exciting. Also, surprised these guys weren't wearing gloves, especially with BULK waste! Keep up the great work!

      @GarbageTrucksAZ  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +SoCalGarbageTrucks Really glad you enjoyed the video. AZ basically has no e-waste laws, but RAD does pull obvious recyclables out of loads at their transfer stations so it wouldn't surprise me if e-waste was in that mix. This will probably remain a one-of-a-kind truck since the idea behind this is since it's only used once a week, the tractor could have an arm and pull a Starr trailer the rest of the week. Unfortunately, that didn't work out but almost the entire truck (frame and everything) was build by RAD themselves in their shop. I have pics of their facility on my Flickr. Thanks for the comment, always appreciate reading everybody's thoughts.

    Such a cool truck! Glad you were able to get more footage of this truck. That blade is one of my favorites to watch. How often is bulk collected out in AZ typically? Seems like it's a lot easier to find bulk routes than an actual truck judging by the occurrence of new bulk videos on YT. Not complaining though, it's very fun to watch. That little light on top of the body was neat. I like that a lot. Great catch, thanks for tracking it down.

    • @GarbageTrucksAZ
      @GarbageTrucksAZ  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +WMmaster626 Bulk is typically monthly in most cities and with a lot of companies. Some is quarterly, depends how far out there you are. My city does bulk annually and next year it moves up to annually. It's actually a lot more difficult to find a bulk truck, you don't know if bulk has been through a certain street yet or there simply weren't any set outs. Plus, they typically cover a larger area than residential. RAD only does bulk on Wednesdays, but a lot of companies and cities only set a week, they could be anywhere in a gigantic area on any day of the week. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for the comment as always!

    Cool set-up. The only obvious disadvantage with this set-up would be winter weather conditions. May not be a problem down there but this thing would go nowhere in the snow.

    • @GarbageTrucksAZ
      @GarbageTrucksAZ  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ryan McCurdy Definitely isn't an issue for sunny Phoenix, this setup was made by RAD themselves and seems to work perfect for them.

      You will find no other industry with as many specific purpose designed trucks than in the garbage industry.

    Wow seems like that engine is a little over rebbedup for compaction!! But I believe thats the most powerfull RL any where around, it would laugh at a slow leach and more power too!! Nice video !!

    It is unfortunate that they have to run the PTO at just a high speed and have is sustained while they are at a stop. Also makes me wonder why there have not been more RL's like this. You could put a massive body on this and carry way more tonnage than on a traditional non trailer setup.

    • @GarbageTrucksAZ
      @GarbageTrucksAZ  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +shadofax96 Very true. This truck was actually homemade by RAD. The idea behind it is since bulk only occurs on Wednesdays, he wanted to modify a Starr tractor to be able to pull it. Unfortunately he couldn't get the arm far away enough from the body with a workable weight distribution so it remains as is.

    Any driver that's turned in a top heavy packed out rear loader can see the logic behind why this is a bad idea.
