  • Welcome back to the 5 Play Challenge, with five plays involving out of bounds. We will show five out of bounds video clips three different times giving ample opportunity to make a ruling. First, is in real time. Second, is zoomed in and slowed it down. Third, an analysis of what happened is given and the correct ruling revealed. These videos, as always, are dedicated to educating officials on the rules of basketball.
The 5 play challenge is not set up to explain the rule in detail but instead simply references rules as they are written and guidelines to help appropriately apply those rules. Every out of bounds video we show in this segment is clipped from actual footage of high school basketball games, involving high school athletes. The goal is to provide as much possible information to assist the way we see out of bounds plays in the future. The more plays we see, with detailed explanation, the better we will get at identifying the correct ruling more consistently.
    Video #1
    - A three point shot is taken and bounces high and up toward the support strap. The officials blows the play dead with an out of bounds ruling due to the ball touching the strap, but did it actually touch?
    Video #2
    - A dribbler comes down the court when it is knocked loose and ends up going out of bounds on the endline. Did the official call it off of the correct player?
    Video #3
    - After a try for goal, the player that shot the ball falls out of bounds but hustles back in to get his own rebound only to have the official call him out of bounds. Was the player inbounds legally before touching the ball or not?
    Video #4
    - A player knocks a ball loose out of the hands of his opponent but when he tries to gain control of it he does so in the air after jumping off the boundary line.
    Video #5
    - A missed shot bounces long and two player hustle to get it. But was the player out of bounds when he touched it?
Watching video clips is a good way to hone your basketball officiating skills and retain your learning for future use. We believe the most effective way to assist in building a correct understanding of rules and how to apply them is by watching videos with annotation, diagrams and shading to highlight key teaching points. Taking away and remembering specifics on a rule, such as out of bounds, is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and the 5 Play Challenge segment, creates videos in a fun and interesting way to test your ability to properly recognize specific plays, but don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.

Play #1, if not sure don't guess. Play #3, I like how the announcer says he can't come in...wrong. Good videos.

IMO, Among the 5 OOB clip series, umpire only gotten 1 correct judgement meaning 20% accuracy. It goes on to explain how crucial it can be when come to OOB situation. Unless the umpire has seen the evidence with his own eyes be conversant with the OOB regulation, any guess/conjecture will definitely result in incorrect call. #2,#4 & #5 are the good examples to explain some of the special n criticality in the event of OOB situation. Thks n regards.

On number 3, the camera angle does not help. There are a lot of shoes. Plus, #25 is blocking our view. I trust the lead official, who had a better angle.

My opinion is out. When you play street ball, if no teammate around and you are under press. Sometimes player will throw the ball to hit opponents feet to keep obsessing. But if opponents feet are already out, I think such move didn’t work. Anyway, thanks for your sharing thoughts. Have a good day.

In high school, and NFHS rules, if the ball touches a player out of bounds, that player has caused it to go out is bounds. Rule 7.2.2
