That is how I cook too. It can be hard to explain recipes to others! Also stems from using what I have on hand. Little bit of this little bit of that :)😊😊😊

Cabbage, carrots, mayo, salt, pepper & a dash of pickle juice. No measuring... just until it looks & tastes right. I LOVE tomatoes in mine! Your kraut reminds me of my Aunts'. She filled an old churn & put a plate on top. When my Uncle came home for lunch every day, he would scoop a bite out. It tickled her that he loved it so much❤ They are both in Heaven now but forever in my heart. They took me in after my Papa passed away. She taught me so much about canning & just unconditional love❤️
Love visiting with you & Mr. Brown.

I made this coleslaw so many times. And it's delicious. Only by accident we added an apple (because there's one lonely apple on our kitchen counter😂) and it turned out good. Thank you Miss Lori for this recipe.

I love apple in coleslaw, too. It works so well with the other sweet and savory flavors, and gives an unexpected bit of ... crunch? Or something!

My mother used to make creamed potatoes and peas just like that. I haven't thought of those in forever! I don't know what relative she got the recipe from, but usually it was her scottish grandmother that taught her most of the cooking she learned as a kid...
Gonna have to make them, and think of my family. Thank you, Lori for the memory!

Ms. Lori - coleslaw was a regular side dish growing up, but mom would also add a bit of fine diced onion and sometimes a few raisins or even dried cranberries...sometimes to switch it up even further, chopped walnuts & apple would at times be added, & yes we often used in sandwiches. I also like the creamed peas and potatoes! Have not had them for years, so thanks for the reminder!! 😀

Great video! As a kid, I hated creamed peas and potatoes; hubby's twin sister got me hooked on them, and they are now a favorite. I kept licking my lips as you were stirring the sauce😋 Love how you make Mr. Brown be the kraut tester...he didn't seem to be scared to try it😊. Thanks for this video tonight. Have a relaxing and blessed Sunday, and may it be a great start to your week❣️

We grew up eating creamed peas on toast. It was a great meal during lent and it also served many before grocery day. I loved it. All of my babies were raised on it and they love it as well. I must say though that I made it like my grandma made it and not how my mom made it. The difference? Grandma used evaporated milk and Mom used regular milk. It’s way better with the canned milk in my opinion. I’ve never tried it on potatoes, but I’m certain I would love that too. Thank you for sharing❣️

Lori, you are such a good teacher. I didn’t grow ip in the country so you have taught me several things I never learned. For instance, I am so thankful I saw you Foodsaver your cabbage and freeze it. Seems like I’m always wasting some cabbage. My hubby doesn’t eat it, so now I know I can use it. I like fried cabbage and stewed. One of our daughters does live in country. She makes sauerkraut. And, I never knew about creamed peas and potatoes. You have taught this old girl some new things. Just goes to show ya, you can teach and old dog new tricks. Thank you my friend.❤️✝️

Ms. Lori. I hope you don't mind me commenting. Your coleslaw was THE ONE I've been searching for over many years! I am so grateful you take the time to teach us that don't know very much how to do things. We live in Lisbon, Portugal now and can't get things like condensed "cream" soups, etc. Your channel helps us make meals we miss from home --and add flavor to the Portuguese dishes we've come to love. Please know your goodness and kindness reaches to many parts of the world. Those of us blessed enough to watch are eternally grateful...

I remember my Mother-in-law would fix creamed peas and little new potatoes like these. Every time she would serve them, I would eat'em til the world looked level! I always wished she'd make them more often. I never saw her making the sauce, and never did ask her how. I was too timid I guess. Now there is no reason for me not to make my own. Thank you !!

I love sauerkraut❣ When I had C disease I could eat again after a week but everything tasted so nasty until I took out my sauerkraut jar and tried to eat it and sure enough I could taste some. People advised me to put some mashed banana through it. That mash with sauerkraut was the only thing I ate for 4 weeks. I lost weight which I was happy about but unfortunately that all came back slowly but surely when I got my taste back.❣❤❣

At the end of the season, rather than wasting the green tomatoes that are not ready… i found a recipe here at TH-cam university for green tomato chutney… oh my goodness!! We serve it with meat- it is so yummy! I make enough to use all the tomatoes and put it in small ziplock bags and into the freezer but you can can them. I didn’t for lack of time. I bet you can find a salsa recipe to use those end of season greenies too!

I make my coleslaw as you do with one added item, I put in celery seed in it. I know about the stink from the sauerkraut, My dad would make 50 gallon plastic drum of it at a time and when he open the lid ooooweee stinky. but so good. My mother would make the cream potatoes and peas and at times she would add some can tuna or chopped ham or dried beef or even some fried bacon and we would have it over biscuits . Soo good!

Ms Lori, I have not had creamed peas and potatoes since my Grandmother passed in 1971! I had forgotten about that dish over the years. This looks exactly like her recipe so I will be fixing this soon! Now I just need your cornbread recipe for two! I didn’t see it in the desc box or a pinned comment. Thank you for these wonderful recipes of good down home cooking! God bless!

Your slaw is the exact way I make it! My mom would cut the cob or core out of her cabbage and put them in the crock with cabbage for kraut! They were better than pickles!! We loved em. She also made creamy peas and potatoes too! Delicious video!! God bless!!

Thank you so much for sharing the creamed peas and potatoes recipe 😊 My Mama used to make creamed peas sometimes for Sunday dinner and I loved them but never knew how she made that. She didn't add potatoes like you did, but what a wonderful idea that I will be doing soon. I mostly eat veggies now that it's only me to fix for. ❤❤

Lori and Danny, I have a little acquired granddaughter that thinks I am wonderful because i grow up in the back woods then traveled. I have done nothing compared to you and Danny. I can't wait for this q and a. Vicky will go wild that she met someone who had a ranch with real long horns and homesteads. It is a dream of hers to builds her own house out of recycled materials and be self sufficient. Plus, you are a real life cowgirl! You and Danny have had a wonderful and adventurous life! I made freezer slaw with red cabbage from a recipe my mother had and it turned out so good. I found out that after I thawed it out I could strain the vinegar sauce out of it and mix Mayo with it to make a creamy coleslaw! It was great both ways !

I love homemade sauerkraut! I let mine ferment at least 4 weeks. When I started making it several years ago I told my dad about it and he told me his parents used to make it in a big pot. They stored the completed sauerkraut in a hole in the ground (no refrigeration yet). My grandparents were born before 1900, so yes, I’m getting some age on me❤️😊 LOVE the old ways❤ I love your channel and how you share the “old ways.”
