  • Under the new Stellantis banner, Peugeot and the sister brands are on a major new model offensive in SA, with launches planned for every month this year.
In mid April, I attended the launch of the facelifted 3008 models and came back highly impressed. The new face with bold grille and contours that reach across under the headlights. The sabre tooth daytime running lights and the lions claw taillights are all very distinctive and somehow aggressive, adding to the visual appeal.
On the interior, GT models are packed to the gills with both luxury and safety spec. From the quilted leather upholstery, red in the test car or available in more conservative black to traffic sign recognition and active cruise control, it's all there.
The little Peugeot steering wheel is becoming more familiar to me and is a pleasure in general use, although it can still often block the drivers view of some of the instrumentation. The dash is all digital, although not the 3D unit as used in the new 2008, but fully configurable to the drivers requirements.
The centre infotainment screen includes all the usual functions, including navigation and full cell phone integration and the distinctive piano key controls below are easy and intuitive to use.
The now familiar 1.6L 4 cylinder turbo engine delivers 121kW and 240Nm to the front wheels through a very smooth 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox. Flappy paddles are there if you really want to use manual override, somehow I still think these are an unnecessary item in most cars, especially in a medium sized family SUV. In this role, both rear seat and boot space are excellent and the provision of 2 x USB ports and a 12V socket in the rear add to the family use factor.
I took an extended open road trip to the farm in the 3008 and took the opportunity to experience the cruising ability with the car purring along at 120 yet still capable of very quick overtaking when required. The typical French style ride and comfort made for an easy cruise.
The next part of the trip was on an extended stretch of dirt road and the 3008 surprised me by the smoothness and comfort, the ability to handle the bumps, rocks and ruts without ever being flustered was impressive. It reminds me of the Peugeot 404 of many years ago that earned the title of "Champion of Africa" through it's ability on dirt roads.
Fuel consumption for the full test period was 8.1l/100km and this must be the only factor that I feel could be improved. Considering that much of my driving was open road cruising, I feel that it should be a bit better than this.
The 3008 GT is currently priced at R644 900 with the "base" Allure version with the same engine and transmission available from R514 900. All versions include a 5 year/ 100 000km service plan and warranty.

Awesome review. What would you choose between this and the Cx5?
