    Some quick updates:
    - I messed up the voiceover recording a bit, which is why some words get cut off at the end of a sentence. Hopefully you can figure out what I meant to say!
    - Pimax was able to help me get back to 2D mode, so things are back to normal with the device. I'm not touching that VR Mode button again though :)
    - The key mapper software *does* have an option to adjust the size of the circle, it works well -- thanks to Martin at Pimax for helping me out!

      I'd say 'master of none' is a bit harsh. Its emulation seems quite capable.
      But of course if there're cheaper handhelds that can run PS2 and Switch games smoothly they'd be the 'masters'.

      FYI, another thing not mentioned is that the prices you showed are for the handheld ONLY. It's $50-$100 more for the headset and controllers, and it is sold as the Pimax Portal View.

    Many thanks for taking your time to test and review the Pimax Portal, Russ. As you already pointed out, this is one of the prototype we showed at CES 2023 and many improvements are on the way in new iterations. Unfortunately there is a bug in the current VR-software, we apologise for that and this will be of course fixed. Regarding the controller mapping tool, I may have forgotten to mention that you can actually resize the button-size and do lots of other tweaks for each button and analog thumbstick. But hey maybe thats something for another video :) Anyway, a pleasure to watch your review - as always! Cheers Martin at Pimax

      Good on this developer for responding directly on the review for transparency. If the company is really set on keeping the aesthetic of their tear drop d-pad design they can make a slight compromise to their design that might fix the discomfort issue. I think if they add a slope to the inside of the buttons where that sharp edge meets the plastic, or making it so that it goes slightly below the plastic, might fix the issue and would even give their buttons a unique feel to them while still maintaining that tear drop look.

  • @ShootEmUpGood
    @ShootEmUpGood ปีที่แล้ว +37

    Thanks for covering this. I had my eye on this for a minute but didnt really trust the company enough to drop $$$ on a product. Plus, android handhelds are getting hot and a better product will be around in the next few months.
    The controllers being BT (now) is a red flag for me. That extra bit of latency really kills the gameplay for some games. I plan on doing some cloud gaming (especially with that incredible display), but you add on another 60-100ms for the cloud, then another 30-50ms for the BT and suddenly you cant play FPS and the timing of your movements dont match to what you're seeing. For a dedicated gaming device at that price and with the competition it has, laggy input ruins this as a competitor.
    You're 100% right about that price point. Odin (Lite/Base/Pro) have a bigger battery, bigger display (pimax bezels are BAD), proven devices, replaceable parts, better inputs at $199-327. $399 is Steamdeck territory, and while they are two different form factors and OSs, are still dedicated gaming devices. Seeing as how this is a generation step (spec wise) for android handheldss, $299 isn't a bad price. Just wish it had a bigger battery and display. 5.5" is just a bti too small.t.
    5.5", messed up resolution scaling, extra $150 for a display that will only be good for promised future accessories? We've seen how major OEMs for smartphones (bigger companies, bigger budgets, devices more expensive, more useful, more in use) treat their accessory line ups. Pimax doesnt have the bets track-record with delivering on promised timelines, and these handhelds arent selling in the 10s of thousands. I doubt their initial sales numbers are going to trigger any more big products getting made.
    That display selection is atrocious. If it's forcing 120Hz, or 4k... that 4000maH battery is going to shit the bed. My Tab s7+ is locked at 120Hz, which has messed up some games like FFXII:TZA that move at 2X at 120Hz or 1.5X at 90Hz.
    That 8"+8400maH addon accessory should be its own product. I'd drop $450-500 for a device like that with the same internals.

    • @cheeeeezewizzz
      @cheeeeezewizzz ปีที่แล้ว +6

      They already have shown the vr capabilities. The kinks are being worked out but they showed it from the first time they showed the headset. So it's price isn't unreasonable considering it offers and entire level of functionality offered by no other handheld. I agree they should work on the inputs though. Martin from Pimax has already replace the control sticks on some of them using anbernic sticks and has remarked that they use the same connection and just worked. So the analogs will be easily replaceable. The screen is smaller for its size, but the extra resolution is for VR. It scaled perfectly at 1080p and 720p too, so you can run it at different resolutions (they have settings for that and it's a driver level switch). The battery life will be fine, and the screen, having tested it myself during their roadshow, is really good.
      Pimax doesn't hit their timeliness, but they pretty much always deliver on the products. Some products they released even got extra specification bumps later in manufacturing when they had to change to new parts due to a lack of availability for the old ones. So the company went out of its way to continue working on just the subset of headsets that could support extra features (higher refresh rates) and spent the time to enable those features. Something that I've never seen another company do. They have even produced more VR headsets than any other manufacturer, and by a large margin too. They have the experience and technical skill to do this.
      You sound salty.

    I'd love to see what you think of the KT Pocket. Finally available for preorder. I think it's the first device that will overtake the price/performance of the RP3+ and Odin. That Helio G99 is solid. Screen at 4.5 in might be pocketable. That 6+128 is quite compelling. I was wondering what would come after the T618, since the Amlogic 922x chips are too old and inefficient. Looks like Mediatek is the next frontier. Ayn and Retroid have some work to do to keep up, and for the RP4 I won't be content with a cosmetic upgrade as is typical. The RP3+ is the first device in ages I've gone all out on customizing because it's pocketable. The Odin isn't and as a result I hardly use it. Once it won't fit in the pocket it's just another device for the backpack and I can't take it everywhere.

    Bout half way through, I really think you should have waited till you got a retail or complete unit...17:16. I'd call this a pre-review or something.
    I wonder how high up an upscale you can go for these emulators, can you go to 4k with gamecube/wii/ps2 at 60hz? I'd never upscale that high but given it's resolution and video out, ya know? That 5.5 inch screen, it's gotta be a tad small for AAA streaming, like the AyaNeo Air Plus or whatever.
    I was excited about this, it's great! But since I have an Odin, I can't justify plopping down like $400-450cdn for the base. But if it does VR well at the end, that would really tickle my fancy lol. 4000mah is pretty limiting, smaller battery size than the RP3+
    I hope you do another video with the retail unit. Great work! Thanks Russ!

    This remains my most anticipated non-x86 device of the year (unless RH Legend ends up being this year anyway). If they can offer a left controller option with an actual DPad instead of the unfortunately awful current design, I will 100% buy one of these to replace my Odin. Obviously software is in an incomplete state for this review, but Im cautiously optimistic that it will be sorted out for final retail units. Pimax really seem to have a lot of good things going on here, and I get the impression they really are enthusiasts who are excited by and stand behind this thing. It just needs a few of those small dealbreakers like the Dpad sorted out and it will be an absolute hit.

    The beauty of 4k is that it's a multiple of both 1280x720 (3x) as well as 1920x1080 (2x). It's awesome to be able to use the lower resolution for more demanding games and the higher one for less demanding ones.

    With what info we now have from videos like yours, it's become very clear that Pimax planned to do too much, while in reality not doing nearly enough to have a solid experience for their 2 base functions. Software stuff can always be fixed, but there are very clear design flaws in terms of hardware. For the very basic stuff, there should have been volume buttons and a 3.5mm jack. And like you said, the controllers needed better buttons. There should have been a better dpad by default, while the split button version should've been sold separately. The Portal doesn't have a kickstand and its screen is too small, there really should not have been any prioritization on single device 2 player mode. Just make a great one player experience and then sell more controllers. The VR headset should have been an active dock rather than a passive insert. It should have been more like GearVR rather than Cardboard or LaboVR. It should have come standard with the weight offsetting battery pack because all hands on have said its way too front heavy of a device and it should have used USB C for both charging and video in for PCVR rather than requiring two cables. It should have had another 3.5mm jack on the headset as well.
    This could have been a very cool device, but just like the Razer Edge it looks to be a massive missed opportunity.

    What I would like to see from ANBERNIC at this point is a 6-7 inch Linux based handheld. Heck, it could even have Open Dingux on it! Just give us a 6-7 inch Linux based handheld that gives us perfect 32bit and below emulation and I'll gladly pay $200 for it. It doesn't have to run N64, PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Saturn or etc. It doesn't have to have video out, a touch screen or a camera. It doesn't have to have detachable joycons or analog sticks. Just plain simple smooth 32bit and below emulation on a Linux handheld console with a 6-7 inch display. No gaming company has done this yet, not that I know of. You'd think by now someone would have created one.

    • @fonzitheman
      @fonzitheman ปีที่แล้ว +2

      7" yeah, 16:10 aspect would be hood.. linux yeah, but its gotta be able to run N64,Dreamcast, Saturn though I say.
      PS2,Gamecube would only be a bonus.
      Any X64 windows based handheld can run linux though, or should be able too.
      Most of those large screen ones arent cheap though.
      What about steamdeck then you got a steam deck havent you? Well there go, run Batocera linux off a micro SD card, or even flash internally if you dont care for Steam 😁.
      Or if you need larger storage than a 1TB micro sd card for Batocera you can get one of those steam deck cases that velcro's a portable ssd on the back and cable attaches to steam deck, not ideal having things stuck to the back but at least its a work around if you need a 2TB external storage or larger.

    • @jonathonearl482

      @@fonzitheman Yes, I have both the 7 inch Steam Deck and the Powkiddy X17 that are both powerful. I have a 1TB in both which is more than plenty enough space for the games I play I like them both very much. So the 6-7 inch Linux I requested is not a need at all, it's just a console that's a want on the side. I don't have to have it, but I'll purchase one in a jiffy if it's well designed at the right price! Yes, there are Windows based 6-7 inch handhelds out there but there needs to be one released with only Linux preinstalled on it, that would also make it more affordable at purchase price. Open Dingux is probably the oldest Linux interface that provides smooth 32bit and below emulation, this is on my 300X, V90 and Original PocketGo. That's why I stated that I would even take a 6-7 inch Linux handheld with Open Dingux. It would also be a major shock if someone actually released one, because it has not happened yet.
      Now ANBERNIC just released a low powered Linux handheld with smooth 32bit and below emulation, their 3.5 inch RG35XX. That's great and all but why not use that same Linux interface and make us a 6-7 inch Linux based landscape handheld? That would be far more interesting than another 3.5 inch handheld because there are already a ton of those out there. As soon as I saw the RG35XX I wasn't the least bit impressed by it. Especially, when I already have the ANBERNIC RG351V and RG353P with 3.5 inch displays. I'm not impressed by the RG405 or KT-R1 either.

      @@fonzitheman I've had the X2, PS7000, X16, X12, X40, X70 and none of these count as 7 inch handhelds with decent 32bit and below emulation because they can't even emulate NES correctly! They only do GBA, GBC and GB. You may not believe this but all of my micro handhelds give me far better 32bit and below emulation than those 7 inch handhelds I just listed! Those being my Miyoo Mini, Powkiddy A66, Original PocketGo, V90 and RG300X which have 2-3 inch displays.
      For an example. If ANBERNIC can give us a 6 inch version of their RG300X and add the shiny ANBERNIC logo under the display that would be the perfect large display Linux handheld for me. Also, keeping the same color scheme options with their RG300X. I really wouldn't mind purchasing a Black and Silver ANBERNIC RG600X!

      Yeah, those cheaper ones have their limits, but they are cheap for a reason.

      Running Batocera you would see is better and can run them better.. But.. Running Batocera on the PS7000 also has its own weird issues, cause of the limited hardware it has.
      Its better than the stock OS but it defo has its own weird issues.

    $299 is crazy even if it didn't have VR, but that fact it does VR as well(or supposed to lol) is just crazy good at that price. Clearly they gotta work out w/e those VR software bugs where and that horrible ugly headset that looks like it blocks the fan which would be vital for VR and it running at a higher resolution during VR usage. I'm sure they will get it fixed since Pimax is a VR headset company in the first place.

I can't play Valkyrie Profile 2 on Odin for instance, even after lowering settings as it's too demanding for it, but here you're saying this can play PS2 upscaled no problem?
