Dongshan island was controlled by ROC until 1950 and the last time the ROC tried to reclaim the mainland started from launching an attack on Dongshan island. It might not be strategic important but it is historic important.

The US still have over 10% of the world's production of semiconductors. However, much of that is for in-house use (Micron, Intel, etc.) and not necessarily in the "foundry" market making chips that other companies have designed. Intel does have a small foundry operation now. However, they're not quite at the level of TSMC and Samsung at the most advanced process nodes. TSMC and Samsung are by far the most advanced, but TSMC has considerably more capacity. TSMC is planning on having some of their most advanced processes operating in the United States in a few years. However, because of TSMC's massive capacity, I can't see them being dethroned any time soon. The only thing I think that might change that would be China invading Taiwan, whereby a sabotage plan is likely in place to keep China from using that capacity and the equipment - not that any of the Japanese/European/American equipment companies are going to service that equipment. China has to know that it would destroy the world economy (including their own) if they were to invade Taiwan.
