I as a former a6500 user and now a7 IV user, I would like to add a few more things. Pros: - You can get incredibly detailed sharp photos and videos, especially the results of the higher megapixel count of the a7 IV really impressed me. I often find myself dialing back the sharpness in camera because it’s looking a bit too digital and unnatural - I really like the form factor of the cameras. Their size and weight never got in my way - switching between video and photo feels really comfortable on the a7 IV - S-Cinetone and Slog 3 are great for video - the full size HDMI-port comes in handy. This makes it so much easier to connect the camera to monitors or external recorders. This makes it much more usable for video work and creates a better hybrid camera package. - af tracking even with third party lenses works very well Cons: - Overheating issues for filming even in winter after only 30 minutes! (doesn’t happen too often but be careful in direct warm sunlight. Even when not recording it can get really warm very quickly) - I don’t like the screen, but the viewfinder also isn’t that great. It’s useful and decent but especially the viewfinder of the a7 IV looks a little blocky to me almost as if you can see the individual pixels. It’s not as “punchy”, detailed and life-like as I expected it to be - the IBIS could be better and more intelligent - the menu is still a bit confusing and not very intuitive - the color science improved but sometimes is a bit off, especially skin tones and yellow tones in particular. It’s not a huge let down but for 2800€ camera from late 2021 I expect more. Also because this has been criticized for years now and other brands are much better than sony in this regard. - annoying limitations to protect their higher end cameras (reasonable from a marketing standpoint but still annoying) Also worth mentioning: - imo the focus depth map is a bit overhyped. It’s impressive and surely useful for some scenarios and people but focus peaking is still the best allrounder for that use case (both photo and video). The focus depth map often blocks most of your frame with the colors and #2 most of the time I think it’s more important to find critical focus than seeing where your focus plane is at the moment. - some software developers were/are really slow to make their software compatible with some of the RAW compression types
@@professionalpotato4764 No it was connected to my Ninja V and it was 4k/25fps. Overheating happened only twice but I thought it was worth sharing. In the menu there is also a setting that allows you to film longer even when the camera is getting too warm. But still, for a hybrid camera I was a little annoyed that this is still an issue
Since the launch of A7iii and the introduction of third-party zooms like Tamron 28-75, Sony has gradually become a reliable brand for working professionals in both stills and video. However, it has also become less fun to use (e.g. mediocre screen and IBIS), less value-friendly (e.g. a7IV compared to a7III, expensive flagship A1 without many firmware updates), and less well-rounded (more segmentation of product line).
I have been an A7III user for four years, and recently acquired a second body to make my work a little easier. I contemplated upgrading, but for what I do the A7III is perfectly fine. I guess ignorance is bliss, because I don't know how much better the viewfinder or LCD is on newer models, nor do I know how much better is the real-time tracking AF. I do find the menus clunky, and while I know I could customize to my liking, I haven't done so. I mean I am used to using the menus, but I do forget where things are sometimes.
I'm using the Canon R6 with mostly EF-mount lenses. Thanks to the huge second-hand market I was able to get 7 L lenses in less than 3 years - something I thought wasn't going to happen just a couple of years ago. There's a lot to enjoy using high end gear from the past. I took the quite unknown 20-35mm 2.8L and the 85 1.2L II with me on vacation to Tokyo and I'm delighted with what they produced. Now I even managed to complete the first "holy trinity" of EF lenses: 20-35 2.8; 28-80 2.8-4 and 80-200 2.8 :-) IBIS and the focusing abilities extract so much more from these old lenses.
The firmware update issue has pushed me to the edge. I’ve been selling off all my Sony gear little by little because they continue to treat the a1 like it’s an a6100. When I buy a flagship camera I expect flagship level of support. Not to be forgotten as soon as my transaction is complete. I’m down to my last 2 sony lenses. Sonys time is running out in my kit.
I use the Canon R3 x 85mm f1.2 DS mainly for portrait work and stranger portraits! I respect what Sony has done and am not opposed to using their gear- im just accustomed and satisfied with Canon! Thanks for the upload, Pierre. Appreciate the work you put into your content. And I also appreciate you sharing your experience.❤
I just recently upgraded from my A6000 to an A7C with the 50mm 1.8 and I love it! But now I have my eyes on the new A9. I just need to actually make some photographer friends and go out shooting.
Hi Pierre, I‘m a Sony user since 2014 with the first a7r. I came from Nikon (D800/D810) and the reasons for switching were: compact size, image quality and the good AF in photo AND video mode. In the meantime I own the a1 (not having a firmware update is desaster compared to Canon), the A7r V, which is the real flagship in terms of image quality and the ZV-E1, which is a very good value for money when it comes to professional videos. Beside the cameras I hate Sony‘s process to become a member of their PRO Team, they don’t trust their professional customers. I’ve never seen such a customer unfriendly process.
have both A7iii and A6600. Love almost everything about both. Firmware upgrades would be nice... willing to pay for it rather than buying new cameras. That said i have never faced a situation where either camera couldn't do the job other than one thing: trying to get low in a vertical (portrait) orientation with the old style tilt only screen is a huge pain.
Hi Pierre, The Pros outway the Cons with Sony, Image quality is so important, video quality is also important. Auto Focus is very important, and being able to use third Party lenses, good on you Sony. I like when you said, a camera system won't change how you shoot, and what happens in your brain is more important than what happens with your camera. So true, thanks for sharing this video.
I have an A7RIII. My main pro is the customisability of them. Those function buttons C1, C2 etc are so useful and pretty much all I use the menus for is to format the memory card. I’ve used a few other makes of camera and nothing comes close to that customisability. My main con is the stupid grip and how close it is to the lens on anything bigger than a small prime. Fed up of getting knuckle ache (and I have small hands) after a day of walking round with the camera in my hand. They need to make the body a little bit bigger and improve the feel of the grip.
All your points were great. You should be able to update the file naming scheme to differentiate files between cameras. That should help reduce the chance you accidentally delete images when you have a day of heavy shooting. I do this on my older Sony a7ii and a6k. Hope that helps. Good luck!
All valid criticism. I feel fortunate that I happened to buy the cameras they are updating regularly A7iv / FX3. But if I owned the A7Siii or A1, I’d be super upset.
Sony weather seal. I left my Sony AX53 and Sony A7R2 with 24-105 on the back of my four wheel drive while inside shooting with A7iv. Torrential rain had come and gone by the time I relised where I left these 2 cameras. Im still impressed to see these cameras still running today, with what I put them through. Great Video, love your work Pierre, I've been following you for agers. Cheers mate.
I've had the A9 for a few years and I actually like the paint coming off. Looking to get a used a1 when they get in the $3500 range. Loved my RX10iv before jumping into full frame. And shout-out to the Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8. that thing rarely comes off.
Thank you so much for your work and opinion. I look every your video on the youtube and admire your skills. I try to photo and I try to study this profession. I like a GH5 and I make video to youtube more then 4 years with this camera, but GH5 not for photo and I took a Sony A7C and I'm very happy =)) and sorry for my English
I've been shooting Sony since 2021(Sony A1) and I agree on the weather sealing, when I shot in colorado and it was snowing a lot, so much water got on my lens and it was just fine. Also went to egypt and in general the air was quite dusty yet nothing really got into the camera which was amazing. Also I agree, the sony zoom lenses are amazing, in fact I have lenses from 12-600mm, covering literally any need. Also yea software updates, very frustrating, especially given how the features not being added is purely business and not hardware limitations. Oh yea and one more thing, sony really does honor their warranty as my Sony A1 shutter broke within a year and they fixed it no questions asked for free, so I would say that is also a plus. And one last issue is that sometimes some dust might get into the tiny cracks of the seals, doesn't get in but just barely stuck which is a bit annoying.
As a Chicagoan, I recognize so many of the scenes in this video. Good work. As for the cosmetic wear on the bodies, I like it. I'm a long-time news photographer and an old black Nikon 35mm camera with brassing in all the right spots is such a great look, a gently worn patina that is never seen on a plastic or rubberized body. But I understand what you mean about it affecting resale value especially on short-lived digital bodies where you use them very quickly and need to sell in order to move on to a new model.
Love from India, I have a Sony A6000 and use sigma 30mm f1.4 and sony 50mm f1.8 OSS. 🤗 Best thing is autofocus and the amount of 3rd party lens available for the e-mount
I'm an Olympus EM1X user, and yeah I know m43 users and especially em1x users are pretty rare, but I love it. The ergonomics and IBIS are seriously impressive, and the ruggedness in my opinion is superior to Sony's or Nikon's mirrorless cameras. Olympus's pro lenses are really nice too. i just got it this year from B&H second hand for 800 dollars. I'm not a pixel peeper or obsessed over noise so micro 43rds are fine for me. Used it pretty often in heavy rain and it never had one issue. Love it.
I discovered your channel a few minutes ago and I wanted to say that I already like your content a lot. As a beginner in this field I look to find different opinions from different people based on different gears and your videos are doing exactly that. Your way of expressing your perspective and editing your videos is very cool. Keep it up
My first and current camera is the a7ii. The autofocus isn't the greatest, and I miss a lot of shots due to it. I've been practicing photography frequently for about a year, it still looks good as new, and It is definitely worth the lower price for what you get, because it gets the job done. I've taken many photos with it that I'm really proud of.
A1 user. I'm happy with mine. It does everything in a small and inconspicuous package. I use the 35GM, 50GM and 85 DG DN for people and general photography. I can not think of a single issue when considering the quality of the system and it's size and weight. Firmware updates don't bother me, I bought the A1 for what it did. System / New camera envy makes no sense to me. I'm hard on my cameras and the A1 has been used in rain, swamps and been dropped. Hasn't skipped a beat.
I've been following you since I started photography with a Sony A6000 a year ago. I enjoyed the process of shooting, but I was always looking for new hardware and trying to capture and edit the perfect picture. Somehow that didn't make me happy. After I tested Fujifilm for the first time, the passion for photography really came back to me. The manual handling and the great jpgs out of camera have reduced my editing to a minimum and now I enjoy the process of taking pictures all the more.
I have been shooting Fuji since 2016 and was pretty happy with my XT1 then XT2. But I got bored at some point and needed a change. For hybrid shooting, the dials are not great to be honnest. Beyond that, I think we sometimes need changes to keep the passion alive. I’m now pretty happy with my A7R5 although I’ve only had it for a couple of months. Happy shooting with your Fuji. I took my best pictures ever on them. Passion is what makes good pictures not the camera. 😊
I used to shoot film on canon cameras, but the Nikon D700 convinced me digital was better and cheap enough to buy so I switched to digital and now I'm invested. I don't shoot video and I don't shoot weddings. But if I did I'd re invest in Sony without question. Great video Pierre.
thanks god you mention the screen issue i came from a canon t5 then i got nikon d810, i always loved how the pictures looked in the back of the screen of those cameras after that i moved to the sony a7r4 and i was surprise about the screen quality its like the screen doesnt have enough dynamic range that makes an issue when it comes to get perfect exposure cuz sometimes highlights look blown out but the arent so i have to be looking throught the view finder to make sure its correctly exposed and thats really disappointing.
Love from NYC, I bought a canon r10 recently and been enjoying it a lot, I want to try the sony a7v which my friend has bc it looks so good. I really enjoy your videos, especially these comprehensive comparisons and your photoshoots especially, have a great day!!
You forgot the one thing that i love the absolute most about sony, i got a sony a7iv for a year and i simply love the fact that i can capture the ambient natural light conditions quickly and sharply and i can work out the natrual colors and give people a real window into the very situation that i was facing. Unfortunately, video and overheating is not a good thing about sony, they cant handle it.
Great video and you hit the positives and negatives spot on. As a 35-year pro shooter who recently switched (mostly) to Sony, I feel both your elation (auto-focus) and your pain (firmware, back screens, etc.). And while I love the capabilities of Sony, compared to my former high-end DSLR system's build quality, ergonomics, screen quality, and oh that optical viewfinder, Sony cameras feel like toys. And yes, I know I am comparing apples to oranges, and I'm committed to Sony now so onward we go hoping for better engineering in the future. One thing I just don't get is the firmware thing. Spoiler alert: Hey, Sony, give us firmware updates, and guess what, we will be even more loyal and we will buy more cameras! Their strategy is just so short-sighted. And now I'll get on my favorite soap box. I can walk into my kitchen and speak to the air and a nice robot lady will tell me the weather forecast or the day's news or play classical music or help me spell chrysanthemum, but my camera cannot hear me. It is time for voice-activated menus! Today's menus are so dense that the first company that lets us change the most common settings (ISO, photo/video, focus mode, etc.) by simply speaking to our camera will rule the world. Okay, rant over.
ive been blessed to be able to buy into multiple camera systems. Nikon z6ii was my first, loved everything about it besides the auto focus, they have the high pixel screens, and some of the best 1.8 lenses ive ever used... but then the Sony a74 came out, and when I was buying a Nikon I said to myself, I wish there was a new Sony camera, because the a73 feels dated to me. had the Nikon for a year and then switched. Sony was the best camera ive ever used, but something about it felt uninsipiring hah, I don't know, maybe screen resolution, idk, but I still have it and it's my work horse, buying GM 2.8 zooms for $1000-$1500 is nuts to me and helped me get so many dream lenses. 2 months ago, I couldn't help myself, I felt like I was shooting less for fun, so I was like.. Ima buy an Canon r5... yeah I know, but I wanted to see if the extra evf resolution, and other things were worth it.... I love that camera but the main issue for canon is the lenses... Compared to Sony, canon's lens tech is from the stone ages man... and I hate it! haha barely any lens has linear motors, and even when they do the front element still moves, and its noisy. 50 1.2 is way worse then Sonys, the 1.8 primes are sooo slow. Like for example Sony people say that the 50 1.8 is a bad lens, well if you were on canon most of your lenses would preform, autofocus wise, just like that lens haha. It's crazy to me! because how does their eye tracking use such slow lenses??? hahah any ways, Sony has everyone beat if they just used better quality screens, and in my opinion, their zoom lens design is ugly, but they corrected it with the 24-70 mark 2 so that's good. Also the auto focus modes in Sony are so great, one thing that people say about canon is that you can switch the eyes your focusing on with the joystick, what they don't tell you is that's only possible in complete automode... no other af point just letting the camera do everything... which is only good in studio work honestly. Sorry for the long comment but I wanted to share my experience as a young professional photographer that is trying to find the best camera for me. Great video!
Tried Sony Alpha with and other Sony camera products against my current Canon 1dx Mark iii and Canon R3 and Nikon Z9 don't feel as robust enough as I'm in adverse weather conditions on a daily basis.
Honestly surprised you didn't mention anything regarding the software for the cons. Personally, the two biggest gripes with my a1 is the screen and the lack of support.
Played with Sony A74 and A73 for about 18 months combined while shooting with Canon as my main gear for the last 20 years. Because I do video and photo for me the biggest issue was sensor dust. Often I would get sensor dust at F11 or smaller and even though I cleaned it often while traveling it was hard to see the dust on the EVF/Screen and when watching the videos I realized how much dust was seen. Photos I can clean in post but not in videos. I used the A74 for 1 year and loved it but the dust drove me crazy. Something I never had to worry about on my R5 and R6Mk2. I would love to try Nikon Z8 along side my Canon. Never had as Nikon but I did have FF and APSC Sony and Panasonic in the past.
Oooh, I haven't heard about this dust issue. That would annoy the hell out of me. I really want to go the Canon route, but they lack midrange priced lenses. If they had a nice 50mm f/1.4 at the $1200 range, like the new SONY GM, I'd get the Canon. Yeah, I could get a used 50mm EF 1.2L, but for $900 on the used market, the chromatic aberrations on that lens are crazy and it's not sharp by modern standards.
The A1 is my absolute favourite Sony camera, however, the firmware scenario hits me hard. So much can be done with the internal processor, yet it's sat not being used to its full potential. I'm not expecting AI or anything of the sort but I would like to see stuff that we have in the A9II which is Micro AF Adjustments... the A1 is so so so capable yet hampered by the software. Come on Sony!
I use a Sony RX100 which has a one inch sensor. And I think it's the best camera for street photography because of its compact size and superb image quality
I use my grandpas sony alpha DSLR-A300, yes, this one from 2008. All because I am a beginner, but still image quality is very good + I have two lenses (18-70, 55-200). I'm very happy with it
Sony camera is like my Dicast Toy... paint comes off and if ONE grain of sand gets into the lock nipple...game over! shit has to go to the shop to get it fixed...if it's outside the warranty period...you have to choke up the $$ money. Sold my A1 ... good writtens.
On my Nikon the LCD screen image appears to use the JPG conversion setting even though I shoot RAW. I set the jpeg setting to flat and LCD looked horrible even though I was shooting RAW only, so I set it back to standard and the LCD looked good again. So maybe changing your jpeg setting to another conversion will improve your LCD experience.
Currently shooting with a D850 and if I had to start over, I would go back to Sony, because the fact they have more support for 3rd party lenses, which for people on budgets is a huge thing, and also I do miss my A7RIV, but overall you don't lose anymore with cameras today
having sony A7IV & FX3, i just updated my FX3 with ver3.0 and the quick menu in new version is awesome, but i dont have that in my A7IV, i can understand one is hybrid camera and one is so called cinema camera, but having same layout will not hurt anyone, now after using FX3 for few days im having trouble using A7IV menus
I just purchased a Nikon Z8 with the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm F/1.8 S prime lenses. I have a question for you all though. Image Quality being my top priority, which lens should I get between the 24- 120mm F/4S and the 28- 75mm F/2.8 'Nikon' non S lens for everyday usability.
I want to become a reac Pro photographer… Cannot choose between A7IV or a 7R IV I want to print A2 paper but i also need the best autofocus i can have A7IV good enough?
Same dilemma I had, while pondering over consequent decision, personal preferences led me eventually toward Sony a7 r4A. Great image quality, but the highest quality lenses are mandatory when working with high end megapixel cameras
Not just firmware, they need to maintain their phone apps. My A7R5 worked really well with their app until iOS upgraded and now the connection for GPS drops if the camera turns off when the app is in the background or the phone screen is off. It doesn’t reconnect when you turn the camera back on. Several others reported the same on dpreview and it stops working after a specific iOS minor version. Sony need to update their app to work with the changes Apple make to iOS ahead of release.
I've been using my Canon 600D for a long time and now that it's starting to show its age through its performance, I have been thinking about switching to Sony. Particularly either an A7III or A7IV, as one of my acquaintances who is more experienced and a lot deeper into the field once told me that the industry here in our country has somewhat of a preferences when it comes to Sony, thus it's potentially easier to get accepted into a company if one may choose to do so. I have also worked on different events previously and a lot of the other photographers and videographers I worked with used Sony too. Another thing he mentioned was how accessible third party lenses were if one has a Sony body and can also aid in saving a bit more money just for the alternatives. I want to continue using my Canon 600D until it breaks and can no longer shoot, but the focusing has gotten much more sloppy as of recent and I'm concerned about how it might affect future projects too.
I am sony user from their dslr to nex5 to a7rii for 7 years until last year i got the new a7rv. I like Sony camera for their size and glass. The af zeiss glasses are great and then now the GM lenses are very good too. Price of Sony gear in my country are also alot cheaper than Nikon and Canon hence all the more I’m sticking to the brand. Also the GM lenses are usually smaller and lighter compare to equiv Canon and Nikon lenses. About the con. Yea. I have been saying since day 1. Sony camera lcd screen is always on the lower res compare to the market. The A1 only has 1mil dot while a7rv only has 1.44mil dots. On another hand the Canon and Nikon has lcd screen over 2mil dot or 3mil dot. I shoot via lcd screen alot so I would apperciate a better screen. The evf is fine tho. 9mill dots for a1/a7rv.
@@theyear1500 yea I must be sleepy. I got the number all wrong. A1 is 1.44. A7rv is 2mil. The a7iv is 900k+ But my point remain. I hope Sony camera lcd screen can be better/high res.
For me. Pros: image quality, lens choice (including canon) focus peaking, AF, smaller bodies (than Canon FF DSLR) and not much bigger than MFT. Price of hi-res bodies (compared to 5DSr). Cons: Dust. It’s as bad early DSLRs, a problem I thought was behind me when I was used the 6D and E-M5. Battery life on A7rii. Note that a comparison against newer Canon, Nikon kit would be different.
all the lens I had were amazing from them, except the kit 28-70 :), however, I sold them for being too cynical, clinical performance and 2d, when I used some old ones with Zeiss design, or even the Batis series, they are not the best in sharpness, chromatic aberration, vignette, but they capture something that cannot be measured and expressed, the 55mm f1.8, the 85 f2, the 40 f2, and even some classic lens from Zeiss : Pancolar 50mm f1.8 and Sonnar 200 f2.8... the most loved and liked photos are with them, in the photo exhibitions i applied only Zeiss photos were selected from my portfolio to be printed and exposed, especially the old manual focus adapted ones, you think it would be a coincidence, I thought about it long and I think it's not.
I still use the A7 III for my everyday work - making videos for my TH-cam channels and stills for clients, and for my social media. I think of making a vid soon "Does the A7III still worth it in 2023" :) There are some things that I do not like about it: - The screen is crap - The EV is not good - No 4K60 And good things: - Great 4K30 footage - Plenty of picture profiles to work with (LOG,cine etc..) - Great variety of lenses to go for - Great low-light performance - Great battery life - Good autofocus
Another great video Pierre!! I've been using sony(a7iv) for about 2 months, prev i had a nikon, yeah the autofocus its on top yeah the lenses etc but man the monitor why it has to be so bad? Why a company like sony that builds phones, TVs, monitors can have so bad monitors on the a7 models ? Why a a7iv cant have a monitor like a7Riv , i cant understand it. Otherwise, I'm very pleased.
All good points especially the grip and menu. I find the build quality suspect. I'm still using the A7RII (picked up used batteries cheap!) and had the shutter go bad at 35,000 actuations. This from a camera that cost $2,700 at the time is not except-able.
Sony, please give us firmware updates. Especially for trivial things like menu standardization. If you still sell the a7III that I use on your site, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for it to use the same menu system as your newer a7IV
WOW - I just noticed that YES my Sony A7Riii does indeed have a completely different color profile in vertical vs. horizontal. The shutter speed and ISO is exactly the same, but the color profile and histogram are completely different. So strange.
I also think so, why did Sony limit their first mission to provide a camera with update features but my Sony A7r4 camera has only been updated once for years, such as the menu display, 4k 60p, the choice of raw file size in 7r5, in my opinion it can be provided just with software update. so why sony?
Oh, one biggest complain: The terrible placement of lens release button. It happen that I intentionally press that button and disconnecting lens from the body. Especially in gloves…
I’ve been shooting Sony for 3 years coming from Fuji. The a7rv (for me) is the best release to date. But, all camera cos have pros & cons. I feel it’s the culture and industry issue and not a “Sony” issue.
The firmware and inconsistent issues seems to be industry wide, even on Fuji that does get updates going from XT3 to XS20 there are annoying different options appearing in different part of the menu, things like one shows your auto ISO value the other doesn’t. Sony should fix it but they are not alone. The firmwares never give you real functionality either, just bug fixes. Sure we got a new app on Fuji that is absolutely woeful, you try to use it as a camera monitor and as soon as it connects it turns off your HDMI, LCD and all camera controls like focus to give you a tiny preview in portrait only, what gives Fuji!!
So I just grabbed my a1 with the 70-200 GM OSS II and tried the whole vertical/horizontal thing inside, outside, contrasted scenes, colorful scenes, etc etc and had zero visible color shift and no differences in the graphs in Ps or Lr. Were you maybe set to auto or something? Not sure why it would do that in auto but for me any auto setting gets very jumpy (a good reason to learn settings). Also, I've had my a1 for almost two years and would say it's seen moderate to heavy use and my camera body literally looks brand new. I do take care of my equipment ie wiping it down, blowing off dust etc. There's not even button wear and I smash these buttons like a mad man on a shooting day lol. My only complaint like many others... FIRMWARE!!! That will be the death of Sony to me if they can't keep there multi-thousand dollar camera bodies updated!
ahhhh so happy to read that then it can be my unit too! For the WB changes yes it's in auto - but in auto it shouldn't change either with the same scenes, it's a bit weird I'll be honest ha!
@@Pierretlambert If I'm not mistaken it does auto white balance based off of how you have your metering setup. It would be possible that if you have wide metering and not point that when you go vertical it's picking up a different area for the metering thereby adjusting the WB? Just a thought though. I know if I use auto iso and such that it can change quite a few different combinations for the exact same shot. Cheers!!
I don't have the paint peeling issue. I've had the A6400 a lil over 3 years. Looks like day one. I haven't had my a7 IV that long. I'll update in a couple years
the 6400 wont peel because it is not painted haha. Its just black plastic. The a7iv on the other hand its magnesium and graphite and will indeed wear on the edges exposing the silver material underneath the black finish
I'm currently using Pentax K5-IIs daily for wildlife and macro photos. I'm thinking about switching to Sony, but the price for me is a little bit too high, even of used ones.
decide on the lens system you want to be in first. Sony is only good with its GM lenses. third party isnt as good as the 200-600, and that lens is garbage. FWIW Look into Olympus.
@Christo thank you very much, I'm considering Sony mostly because it is only system that has an adapter from pentax lenses to their body (with af) and I have few very good lenses from pentax and thought that I could use them with new body. And later, buy some professional lenses from Sony.
I’ve been with Sony for over 10 years. I started with a77, a99, a7, a7 a, a7 III, a9 and now a1. And these are the main downsides of using Sony system: 1. Poor customer service. The main reason I stopped recommending Sony to other photographers. 2. Poor software/lots of bugs. Both my a9 and a9 have an Auto White Balance bug when shooting bracketing, and customer service just doesn’t care. Nor they update the firmware to fix those issues. 3. Bodies need L plates in order to use them comfortably. 4. Auto White Balance isn’t as good as in Canon cameras. 5. Lossless RAWs are lossier than lossy RAWs (I shoot in Medium size on my a1). 6. I still have backfocused images from time to time, which is unforgivable for an a1. It happens when shooting slightly backlit, which a9 handled better imo. Pros: 1. Sony lenses are cheaper than Canon/Nikon equivalents. 2. Best for beginners: a lot of good third party lens options which are dirt cheap. 3. Sony lenses are usually smaller than competitors’. Overall, I would’ve switched to Nikon Z8 already if their 50 1.2 weren’t that huge.
I would probably say that one of the biggest cons is the Imagine Edge Mobil App for Remote control. To buy a 6,5k camera and not be able to set the focuspoint via their own app is such a disappointment. Not to mention the connection problems. Taking selfportraits with a 135mm or 70-200mm is a serious gamble.
Can anyone help me with the hot shoe? What is he using there? Work as a photographer on a ship and rain / snow is well known to me. Really need a better solution as the regular one. Thanks a lot!
Goooood Morning! What do you think of Sony after all those years?! 🧐👇

I as a former a6500 user and now a7 IV user, I would like to add a few more things.
Pros:
- You can get incredibly detailed sharp photos and videos, especially the results of the higher megapixel count of the a7 IV really impressed me. I often find myself dialing back the sharpness in camera because it’s looking a bit too digital and unnatural
- I really like the form factor of the cameras. Their size and weight never got in my way
- switching between video and photo feels really comfortable on the a7 IV
- S-Cinetone and Slog 3 are great for video
- the full size HDMI-port comes in handy. This makes it so much easier to connect the camera to monitors or external recorders. This makes it much more usable for video work and creates a better hybrid camera package.
- af tracking even with third party lenses works very well
Cons:
- Overheating issues for filming even in winter after only 30 minutes! (doesn’t happen too often but be careful in direct warm sunlight. Even when not recording it can get really warm very quickly)
- I don’t like the screen, but the viewfinder also isn’t that great. It’s useful and decent but especially the viewfinder of the a7 IV looks a little blocky to me almost as if you can see the individual pixels. It’s not as “punchy”, detailed and life-like as I expected it to be
- the IBIS could be better and more intelligent
- the menu is still a bit confusing and not very intuitive
- the color science improved but sometimes is a bit off, especially skin tones and yellow tones in particular. It’s not a huge let down but for 2800€ camera from late 2021 I expect more. Also because this has been criticized for years now and other brands are much better than sony in this regard.
- annoying limitations to protect their higher end cameras (reasonable from a marketing standpoint but still annoying)
Also worth mentioning:
- imo the focus depth map is a bit overhyped.
For overheating in videos, was it at 4k30? Or were you shooting longform 4k60p?
@@professionalpotato4764 No it was connected to my Ninja V and it was 4k/25fps. Overheating happened only twice but I thought it was worth sharing. In the menu there is also a setting that allows you to film longer even when the camera is getting too warm. But still, for a hybrid camera I was a little annoyed that this is still an issue
@@theowlfromduolingo7982 Wow, it overheated while external recording in winter? Damn... It's 35C where I live, maybe I should rethink the A7iv.
Since the launch of A7iii and the introduction of third-party zooms like Tamron 28-75, Sony has gradually become a reliable brand for working professionals in both stills and video. However, it has also become less fun to use (e.g. mediocre screen and IBIS), less value-friendly (e.g. a7IV compared to a7III, expensive flagship A1 without many firmware updates), and less well-rounded (more segmentation of product line).
ah yes! huge change from A7II to A7III and then it just kept getting better!
Now I even managed to complete the first "holy trinity" of EF lenses: 20-35 2.8; 28-80 2.8-4 and 80-200 2.8 :-) IBIS and the focusing abilities extract so much more from these old lenses.
you mean 24-70 70-200?
@@lucasfrisk2490 nope, even older :-) They were released at the end of the 80s. Google for magic drainpipe and you'll find the 80-200.
What two lenses are left?
cannon bot detected
What are you switching to?
I use the Canon R3 x 85mm f1.2 DS mainly for portrait work and stranger portraits! I respect what Sony has done and am not opposed to using their gear- im just accustomed and satisfied with Canon! Thanks for the upload, Pierre. Appreciate the work you put into your content. And I also appreciate you sharing your experience.❤
thank you!
Im also using the a7riii but ive not experienced my knuckles bumping in the lens, apparently the a7iv has a bigger grip
I like a GH5 and I make video to youtube more then 4 years with this camera, but GH5 not for photo and I took a Sony A7C and I'm very happy =))
and sorry for my English
Love it.
I recently got the Sony A6400 and I love it. I agree with all of your comments I think a lot of people are in the same boat as you!
Same. A7II is a very good compromise for beginners!
I went from A7Rii to A7iv just because of the AF, now I rarely miss focus. Also the battery is a huge reason.
I'm using a Sony A 65. I love it. I do a bit street photography and some architecture photography
I’m so torn between what system to choose . Whether nikon or sony. Especially with the new a9 III being released.
The manual handling and the great jpgs out of camera have reduced my editing to a minimum and now I enjoy the process of taking pictures all the more.
ahhh so nice to read that!! keep enjoying it!
I ended up with A1 and a74 started with the a7r2 and had 2 then sold them. Finally sold Nikon D4’s and bought a7r3! Now happy!
I have not seen the the color shift but we should certainly see things like extended bulb mode in the a1. The Sony firmware strategy is a big issue.
I'm very happy with it
Just waiting for something which is worth upgrading to from my a6000. Would love an APSC with the sensor performance of a full frame
Sony camera is like my Dicast Toy... paint comes off and if ONE grain of sand gets into the lock nipple...game over! shit has to go to the shop to get it fixed...if it's outside the warranty period...you have to choke up the $$ money. Sold my A1 ... good writtens.
Where did you get your orange alpha shoe cover from? Looks cool!
This exactly what I want to know as well. I am so hyped, trying to find it for over an hour now
Great breakdown! This is extremely informative 👏
That's so true about firmware updates. My A7C has no updates since 2021
Currently shooting with a D850 and if I had to start over, I would go back to Sony, because the fact they have more support for 3rd party lenses, which for people on budgets is a huge thing, and also I do miss my A7RIV, but overall you don't lose anymore with cameras today
If I'm looking to do mostly video work but also some pictures, would you recommend a Canon or a Sony?
having sony A7IV & FX3, i just updated my FX3 with ver3.0 and the quick menu in new version is awesome, but i dont have that in my A7IV, i can understand one is hybrid camera and one is so called cinema camera, but having same layout will not hurt anyone, now after using FX3 for few days im having trouble using A7IV menus
I'm using Canon EOS R3 + 24-105 L F4. But I want to change it to something like R5. Too much speed for me and not enough megapixels)))
I am trying to get into photography but have no idea what camera to use. Do you have an recommendation? Please and thank you 🙏
I just purchased a Nikon Z8 with the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm F/1.8 S prime lenses. I have a question for you all though. Image Quality being my top priority, which lens should I get between the 24- 120mm F/4S and the 28- 75mm F/2.8 'Nikon' non S lens for everyday usability.
Sony please for the love of God give us firmware updates for the A1 & A7S3 ! All the youtubers are asking now !!
Good AF is great because it lets you focus on framing and exposition (and min shutter speed which should be on wheel whitout button damn it sony)
I want to become a reac Pro photographer…
Cannot choose between A7IV or a 7R IV
I want to print A2 paper but i also need the best autofocus i can have
A7IV good enough?
Same dilemma I had, while pondering over consequent decision, personal preferences led me eventually toward Sony a7 r4A. Great image quality, but the highest quality lenses are mandatory when working with high end megapixel cameras
@@oleglebedev7613i think i’l take canon cause of the comunnity, colors and updates
I would like to ask you a question, I would love it if you answer sigma 30mm art lens vs sigma 30mm ex lens I was undecided
If your work focus on mostly photography then get the a7iii, if you are a hybrid shooter then get the a7iv.
Ya i have an A1. And the lack of firmware is super frustrating
rest assured Im telling them everytime I can 😅

The a7RV is 2.1 million, same as canon R5
@@theyear1500 yea I must be sleepy. I got the number all wrong. A1 is 1.44. A7rv is 2mil. The a7iv is 900k+
But my point remain.
Love from India 🇮🇳 ♥️ ❤️ 💕 💗
Reply plz
all the lens I had were amazing from them, except the kit 28-70 :), however, I sold them for being too cynical, clinical performance and 2d, when I used some old ones with Zeiss design, or even the Batis series, they are not the best in sharpness, chromatic aberration, vignette, but they capture something that cannot be measured and expressed, the 55mm f1.8, the 85 f2, the 40 f2, and even some classic lens from Zeiss : Pancolar 50mm f1.8 and Sonnar 200 f2.8... the most loved and liked photos are with them, in the photo exhibitions i applied only Zeiss photos were selected from my portfolio to be printed and exposed, especially the old manual focus adapted ones, you think it would be a coincidence, I thought about it long and I think it's not.
I'm a smartphone photographer your vids helped lot ❤ love from India
I still use the A7 III for my everyday work - making videos for my TH-cam channels and stills for clients, and for my social media.
I think of making a vid soon "Does the A7III still worth it in 2023" :)
There are some things that I do not like about it:
- The screen is crap
- The EV is not good
- No 4K60
And good things:
- Great 4K30 footage
- Plenty of picture profiles to work with (LOG,cine etc..)
- Great variety of lenses to go for
- Great low-light performance
- Great battery life
- Good autofocus
Another great video Pierre!!
I've been using sony(a7iv) for about 2 months, prev i had a nikon, yeah the autofocus its on top yeah the lenses etc but man the monitor why it has to be so bad? Why a company like sony that builds phones, TVs, monitors can have so bad monitors on the a7 models ? Why a a7iv cant have a monitor like a7Riv , i cant understand it. Otherwise, I'm very pleased.
I had an A7R and then an A7S for years but went back to DSLRs. Still keep the A7S for video, though.
06:17 Never thought this will work. Is this save for your gear. Which model did you used here.
Thanks for all this great content!
Great pros and cons that all Sony users can agree on!!!
im using a6000 and hopefully ill get the85mm soon
All good points especially the grip and menu. I find the build quality suspect. I'm still using the A7RII (picked up used batteries cheap!) and had the shutter go bad at 35,000 actuations. This from a camera that cost $2,700 at the time is not except-able.
I am happy with my A7III with kit lens 28-70mm
I wanna buy a sony a 7 ii mk 2 with some extras for 700€ on Sunday Probably... should i save up for the a 7 3 or is it ok to start with the 7 2
First time watching you and Vic from phonearena is the first face thst cane to my mind hearing your voice.
Im using Nikon D7500 and i love this camera.
Sony, please give us firmware updates. Especially for trivial things like menu standardization. If you still sell the a7III that I use on your site, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for it to use the same menu system as your newer a7IV
On A7III each time I format the card it resets to 0000. At least on A7S3 it doesn't reset but it would be a very usefull update on A7III.
Well, for me Sony has the best price/quality ratio. Happy user of a6000, a73, a9 and a7c.
The lens selection is amazing!
Oh, one biggest complain:
The terrible placement of lens release button.
That vertical/horizontal issue could be very frustrating.... an A 6000 user.... :D
But I love to use old vintage lenses on my Sony :)
I'll update in a couple years
good to know thanks for sharing!
the 6400 wont peel because it is not painted haha. Its just black plastic. The a7iv on the other hand its magnesium and graphite and will indeed wear on the edges exposing the silver material underneath the black finish
@@JadeWisdom actually the a6400 is made of magnesium alloy 👍
Hi, for street photo, you think is valuable the speed of A1 or prefer big sensor o RIV ?
From a SONY Pointing Shoot, a6000, A7II, A7RII to the A7IV ! I love to work on SONY'S camera right now :-)
What would you recommend as an allrounder lens to use with The Sony A6400 ?
Kindly reply . Love from Bangladesh
Routing for a firmware update for the A1.
I’ve been with Sony for over 10 years. I started with a77, a99, a7, a7 a, a7 III, a9 and now a1. And these are the main downsides of using Sony system:
Pros:
Beautiful photo and video
Who here remembers the Legendary sony a7iii? 😅. Sony a7iii + tamron 28-75 f2.8. Such a nice combo!
Can anyone help me with the hot shoe?
What is he using there?
Work as a photographer on a ship and rain / snow is well known to me.
Really need a better solution as the regular one.
Thanks a lot!
Nailed it. 100% spot on. Come on, Sony! Give us firmware updates!
I use a canon 850d and I'm thinking about getting an a6400 but still idk if its worth it
