Le Mangala Mantra reste mystérieux. Il vient du Rig-Veda qui est un recueil d'hymnes sacrés. Ces textes sont très difficiles à dater, car le sanskrit utilisé est primitif, mais les historiens estiment qu'ils seraient nés entre 1700 à 1000 avant J.-C. Traditionnellement, on le retrouve chanté à la fin des cours d'ashtanga. C'est un mantra puissant, tourné vers le reste du monde. Le bonheur et la liberté sont des concepts qu'il ne faut pas appréhender dans un sens matérialiste. Om Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu n'est pas un mantra doucereux et romantique, mais un souhait d'émancipation pour toute l'humanité. Il est bienveillant, car il ne demande rien en retour. Ce mantra est une ouverture au monde qui permet de prendre conscience qu'en tant qu'individu, on est une partie du tout.
Mata Amritanandamayi, plus connue sous le nom d'Amma, a fait de ce mantra, un hymne. Amma est un personnage hors norme sortant des canons de l'hindouisme. Elle professe l'Amour partout où elle est. Elle prend les gens dans ses bras, c'est le Darshan. Pour elle, la seule religion est celle de l'amour. À la fin des réunions publiques où il peut y avoir des milliers de personnes, le mantra Om Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu est chanté par Amma et ses fidèles.

Lokah means “location, place, realm, all universes existing now.” Samastah comes from the Sanskrit word same and means “all beings sharing that same location.” Sukhino is from sukha, or “happiness”.
