I've listened to countless "experts" and "professionals" and "vocal coaches" examine pentatonix videos. This coach mentions a LOT of stuff that no other person does. For a "simple" example, very few reviews notice how Pentatonix transitions between singers so seamlessly and cleverly. And you can tell Mr Carri is a real professional. For example, he replays sections MULTIPLE times in order to make sure what he is about to say is complete and correct. It's a simple thing - Mr Carri probably looks at that comment and thinks, "doesn't everyone do that?" , but no - you almost never see anyone else do it. It's also pretty interesting how Mr Carri doesn't blink an eye at how low Avi sings, nor how high Mitch sings. He's probably heard tons of singers. A low singing bass and a high singing tenor is nothing unusual to him. Other "experts" are like "OH MY GOD THATS SO HIGH" and make "Mitch faces". He doesn't even think it's worth mentioning. Bravo. It's unfortunate that Most youtubers watchers have extremely short attention spans and probably will avoid this video because it is longer than 5 minutes. Their loss!
While he didn’t comment on the high or low, he did a detailed analysis of everyone’s singing abilities. And his facial expressions when each member sang, spoke volumes about how their voices touched him. I loved this reaction.

@chodthewacko spot on. Mr. Carri does a true analysis of the dynamics. I have always loved how cleverly PTX weaves their vocals together and use all these techniques of timing to add value and excitement to the lyrics.

I have watched hundreds of reactions to Pentatonix songs and I think you’re my absolute favorite! I truly appreciate your knowledge and insight about their stylistic choices and how talented they really are. Most reactors just think they’re awesome and react to their voices but it’s so much more than that. It’s a treat to hear you talk about the techniques behind their singing and why they choose to do what they do. They’re not just good singers, they’re smart singers. Not a lot of reactors get that and I appreciate that you do. I’ve learned more from you than any other reactor. I loved hearing and seeing your reaction to Pentatonics Hallelujah.
I will elaborate: my first viewing of their performance made me cry like a baby. In fact, I cry every single time I watch it. I was curious as to why it has this affect on me. So I decided to try to understand. I came across this entire phenomena of people ( like you) filming their reactions to it. Everyone was blown away, and mainly were dumbfounded, describing it as amazing, or saying wow, over and over. They also could not articulate the reasons they felt such strong emotions. I decided to research Cohen, and they meaning behind the lyrics. Very interesting;some religion; old testement, the word ' hallelujah', and what that connotes,
referencing king David ( he was a harpist!), and then Sampson and Delilah, but also mixed with these modern NON- religious lyrics.
I read the things Cohen had to say about it. He even called it a 'secular form of hallelujah', like for the everyman. Hmmm... 🤔.
But why do I always cry? I am not religious, but somehow this song draws something forth from me.something deep within. Superficially, the performance and song are amazing. ( Cohen didn't have the vocals to make me react to it so emotionally). Then I can across your reaction video. Finally ! Someone who is talented and articulate; who can begin to help me understand it. I loved your descriptions of the strategic uses of dynamics and what they contributed to the emotional impact. When you said a certain part 'stung you' ; and the real, and reactive look on your face... I shouted yes! !! Finally someone is unpacking this loaded performance a bit, and really digging into what makes it so successful at evoking emotions in everyone. You mainly describe it from your professional view, which is obviously very advanced. But you also allowed yourself to really feel it and describe how it affects you viscerally as well.
I can see, you are a person of great substance; of great passion, respect and proficiency for music. And also a person who is not afraid to allow others to see your real thoughts and emotions in your reactions. How you described the shapes of their mouths as they sang: as, when horizontal , allowed their tone to 'cut like a blade' . Bravo. I loved that description. I really don't watch many personal TH-cam channels. I am glad I found yours.
Building on what you described, I am close to distilling my own reaction to this performance. I had no idea about the bible references, other than the word hallelujah. I think I pick up on universal meanings, for almost all the verses, subconsciously even. Tied you to a chair, cut your hair....that is an utter feeling of powerlessness...we have all felt that, haven't we?? It hurts so much, and so deep, he cannot do anything else. he just has to resign his self because he must 'let go' , and the hallelujah is pulled from his lips.... as if to release that pain to the universe ( or 'give it to God' to handle (for some)) . And the references to the broken hallelujahs. Powerful. The people who struggle in everyday situations of pain , and joy as well. It is a hopeful song. It makes me hopeful . It was really nice to see what you did here. I find your intellect, your sincerity, your love of music, and your musical prowess to be so darned refreshing.

Never in my life would I have thought an interpretation of a song would tie me to a chair like this one. I envy Roberto's incredible high resolution ability to hear, analyse and interpret vocals. I'm amazed and had to repeat several parts, so the 34 minutes were more like a whole hour on my end but I never have experienced their interpretation of Hallelujah as richly layered and intense as today. I bow my head and thank you!

Oh yes, i agree! "Gold", in my opinion is a little bit underrated but it's my favorite arrangement by Pentatonix. The quality of this song is better appreciated, comparing it to the original. Not the video, but the studio recording. Kiiara has a beautiful voice, but once again PTX takes the song and creates something magical. Ascoltala e davvero non te ne pentirai. The second singer has my favorite voice of any singer working today. His name is Avi Kaplan and he went solo in 2017.
The sound of his voice is so beautiful it gives me goosebumps.

Avi Kaplan's voice is smooth honey velvet chocolate whiskey...it fills your heart, sheer pleasure for the ears & his music touches & feeds your soul..
As a music teacher, I grew up with vocal training before branching out to instruments other than the piano. Avi was an opera major in college so knows most of the techniques. He’s also a Basso Profundo, the deepest range for a male (although Tim Foust of Home Free can get a semi-tone or two lower). It has been a phenomenon for eons, literally, that bass voices have an extraordinary effect on people: the depth and resonance seem to relax and often sexually arouse. That is my personal theory as to why Avi’s voice is so popular.
Robert...your analysis and your musical knowledge and the way you offer up your opinion...it's why I and many others keep coming back. Bravo!!

He's speaking Italian, which means that, even in the pauses between video playback, the music doesn't stop. _Parlare italiano: è cantare ad ogni respiro._

Avi, second soloist and bass for the group was on the verge of taking a bass position at the L.A. Opera house when when he and Scott, (tall blonde) met. He (Avi) is classically trained.
He was with the group 6 years but the constant touring and recording was more than he could continue. Also his mother was going through a second round of cancer and he could not get away to be with her and his Dad.
His rich 5 octave range plus his whistle notes when he sings using his Polyphonic voice is so beautiful.
For my ears, PTX will never be the same.
I agree. Avi's timbre was the rock on which Pentatonix was built. His classical rounded vowels really gives depth to the resonance in his low notes. As good as the current bass is, it's not the same.
@@TheSeeking2know It's different. Some people think it is much better now. To each their own. I actually like both but the bass isn't the most important part to me. The trio are the anchor for PTX.
Your analysis is so detailed, it belies the notion to simply sing with heart and emotion. Love to you. May I suggest PTX's recent upload of "Amazing Grace," another masterful performance IMO.
I'm such a Pentaholic and yet I really didn't like that one (though I'm a hymn purist so that was already a strike, as I dislike when hyms are given extra segments (my chains are gone) to make them interesting enough for a new audience), but I'd be willing to watch his take on it and see if I can end up liking it despite my initial impression. It's well sung, don't get me wrong!
(I should add that I know that the 'chains' segment isn't put in there by the group initially, it's a well-known version of Amazing Grace)

Your analyzes remind me of what I did as an English major/teacher, analyzing poetry--looking at word choice and sound and rhythm and rhyme and imagry, etc., to emphasize and add meaning. What we called a "close reading." But you're doing it with music in ways that add such depth to my understanding and enjoyment. I was already a huge Pentatonix fan; you've made me truly understand their talent and artistry in ways I never could without help. Waiting anxiously for the next one! I second the passion for the artistry as well as the musical analysis. Not just knowledgeable (which you are) but descriptive in a new and delightful way, sensing "heartbeats" and spiritual elements that are felt and heard but often glossed over and missed, Roberto, your ability to identify some of the more subtle things that make this group so unique and ear-pleasing is greatly appreciated. I love that while this is often seen as a sad song about the brokenness of love and the heartache that it can bring, you persist until you catch hold onto the hope and life, the regeneration that can come after the heartbreak for each of us. I, too, taught English along with Music. If one is versed in both, the “musical” elements of any language, be they the words themselves (“cellar” vs “basement”), the rhythm of the chosen words, the flow, are quite notable. It’s how I taught Shakespeare. They had to LISTEN to a play or sonnet after reading it. It actually drives me nuts when people refuse to listen to something they’re reading- or vice versa like “In Flanders Fields”, the visceration of which is one of my pet peeves.

Liked, subscribed, shared on Twitter. I *love* this. I love how he manages to tease out individual threads from some very complex harmonizing and blending and makes me hear this song in a way I haven't before. I LOVED that he talked about Kevin and the choices of when to use light percussion vs. bass percussion to raise tension or fold in another layer of meaning. He doesn't just say "nice vocal fry", he talks about why it's there and what it's accomplishing. I especially appreciated the bits where he talked about using the horizontal mouth position to emphasize the words that were being sung, and how FINALLY someone commented on Mitch's floating thread that emerged from the crescendo. Most groups would have put a full break between the end of the crescendo and Mitch's solo, but Mitch's note wafted out and carried us to the late closing of the chord. Great song, GREAT break down. I can't wait to see everything this coach has done. (The captions were fantastic, thanks.)

I LOVE how each one of them shines, without any of the others trying to be the star.. What I mean is even though each one of the group has a absolutely star quality voice, they work as a team, coming forward or backing off as the arrangement requires. They are wonderful.

I really appreciate your input. This brought me back to High School Choir with our director breaking down shaping the sounds to blend and move as one. It was fun to sing more than just the notes on the page. This group fills me up and makes me cry with nearly every presentation. Just wonderful.

I’m completely fascinated watching someone with your level of musical knowledge figure out the arrangements of these songs. The first half of the song, I could see your brain working while you were listening-trying to digest the musicality and technical skill of the group. Then, after dissecting why Kirstie & Mitch (guy with the hat) are so amazing you seemed to get caught up in the beauty of the song and let it play through to the end before going back and working though the back half-which was a perfect reaction. (BTW, your audible *exhale* at 22:22 ... same. Every. Single. Time.) Thank you so much for doing these. I have a moderate musical background, but your level of expertise is so enjoyable I could watch you review PTX all day. Hope you’ll do more! You might enjoy Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy, a vocal group performing a classical instrumental piece with a Grammy winning arrangement. Or, other popular choices are Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen), their Daft Punk medley (which also won them a Grammy) and Amazing Grace. Personally I’d love to see you do Say Something (Christina Aguilera & Great Big World) or Can’t Hold Us (Macklemore & Brian Lewis). There’s so much going on in those songs and I’d love to hear your thoughts and watch your brain process it!

you have... by far.. the best technical reaction to pentatonix i've seen, and ive watched probably a hundred or more at this point. i absolutely love this song. I only have minor singing experience myself, so to be able to hear from a professional all those little things i thought i noticed too is amazing.

Very enjoyable and satisfying reaction and discussion of Pentatonix introducing acapella singing as a popular, imaginative and expertly crafted vocal medium. This is an amazing reaction. Your ability, to analyze the singing techniques then combine the singer's style (i,e, crooner) and go straight to the heart of the effect because of these things, is spot on. The way you broke this down for us is almost like breaking the code of a mathematical formula. I know how I feel at certain parts of this performance and now I understand better the "why". This talented group is so creative and on point. You can hear each voice and they do not overpower each other. They support one another. They know when to step forward and when to pull back in order to achieve the desired outcome. When the tenor is singing I can hear the pronouncement of the bass and I love the contrast. Its emotional and its beautiful. Thank you.

I've always thought that Mitch, in the big hat, has exquisite control of his registers and his timbre is smooth.
