Farmers need to think outside the box! Go online and start a community service page where city ppl can come to the farm for a day and do work there are soo many young families that would do that

Cool idea, but I'm sure there are some places where liability insurance requirements prevent letting folks go and work on the farm like that. That'd be info farmers would need to have.
When life is easy we get lazy. A hard project is well worth the effort. Well done

Of all the new life in the country episodes, this has been my favorite thus far. Although I don't particularly enjoy the company of people, running a B&B or farm cafe has frequently crossed my mind as a means of helping stretch a budget for a larger property, or like here, save a family farm by bringing in additional liquid funds to help run the operation.

Turned out to become a fantastic place to stay, and it's still in business (Treicert Farm).
Actually there is another holiday let added, the shed at the side of the parents home has been turned into a let, and it's also possible to book B&B now (Passion for Pembrokeshire).
Not sure if the outdoor business became reality, but the rough coastline is surely suited to do outdoor pursuit, a sort of canyoning but then along the coast, also not sure if the parents still run the farm, they are well in the 70's now considering this show was filmed 15 years ago..
Absolute worth a stay if you like nature and outdoors activities.

There wasn't any family history in the piece of farm land in this episode. Would have been lovely to know.
I so admire people who can graft for short stints to get where they want to go. A small interactive farm for hands on experience would work well for them. The benefit of quality and durability reigns long after price is forgotten.

Thank you for your input. Before writing this I checked the other programs and found actual names listed except for this one. I then looked up TripAdvisor for B&Bs in their town and wasn’t able to find it. I was listening. Maybe you should have better manners.

Maybe at the time the parents didn't want to trade off of the death of their son and they were embarrassed to be on television as long as the name wasn't out there they were fine. I know when my brother was highlighted in a documentary about after prison counselors being killed by outpatient Parolees or halfway house attendees my father asked the docu company to please not state where he lived as he lived with family at the time and he didn't want the elderly people harassed.
That one Cottage with a mezzanine couldn't use one of those attic fold down stairwells

Most building planning departments will not allow you to use that as a permanent access to a constant use area. They're not rated for fire escape. It must be a solid stare case.

ladder was againts health regulations, so no go there and stairs likely won't fit in any reasonable way. Shipping all the way from US sounds also pricy.

A bit frustrated at the naivete but I watched the WHOLE video, so I must have liked it. ☺LL
Not a fan of the fences simply because they push into the space of the main house.
I had a holiday let on our farm but discontinued the "farm tours". People would let their kids run all over the place and some were undisciplined. It was just too dangerous so we had to have the farm "out of bounds" for all guests. Just a warning to these folks. There are wonderful guests that will love and appreciate the farm but it will take only one bad accident to have your insurance climb and perhaps even make the place uninsurable for liability as a tourist / holiday home.
When designing two story homes, having the living space top floor makes sense if you live in a location with views, it also makes better sense from a safety perspective having bedrooms at ground level in case of fires. Also in warmer climates such as in Australia, it’s absolutely horrible having bedrooms upstairs because heat rises making the rooms too hot to sleep comfortably, it’s far better having them at ground level where it’s cooler.

I wonder how many people noticed and recognised the mangle in the shot at 44:49, let alone know what it was for.

Every time I see these barn conversion projects, I wonder: How do they get the farm smell that is most likely absorbed into the lime mortar and wooden beams out? I'm pretty sure that even digging the old mortar out, there is still mortar left inbetween the stones....and how do they clean off the years of dirt build up from the walls when they need to keep it dry so that the lime mortar doesn't crumble, like George was concerned about when the roof was off....got to get the roof on before the wet weather comes....After many, many years of housing animals, there has got to be lingering odors.... we had a few pigs in an old wood and stone hip roof barn about 35 years ago, and even though the barn now houses cattle, on a wet day, the smell of pigs is still noticeable
How can the farm stay in the family for generations to come when there appear to be no children in the current generation?

The builder but f ed on the roof some of the wood needed to be redone but most off it was savable. And he charged then to replace the hole thing so how more did he over charge them for on the job more than likely he over charged the hole way though the job. The couple couldn't be there the hole so they do not know how much he over charged them and or he but f. Ed on the hole job making to run way over cost on the job

Not one solar panel came on those holiday cottages! I'm sure they would have been able to do it if asked as this was not on a National Trust list! Missed opportunity!

Why am I talking off my the top of my head by saying they missed an opportunity to produce clean energy for their holiday cottages? What's your trigger? Stop saying I don't know what I am talking about! There was plenty of ways they could have discussed clean energy! The choose a traditional modern heating system over green energy. It's not a crime to call people on that choice!
@@fredrika27 It's not unreasonable to think of green energy in a situation like this. However this program was filmed over a decade ago and back then the technology was expensive and inefficient, both financially and in terms of the energy if provided. That is the real reason you don't see it here.
@@butwait I built a house back in 1997! We had a solar panel array, which was costly at £5,000, but we're able to write off as tax credit. It can be done, so stop making excuses!

If looked after properly, the roofs could last a long time without rotting.

you have no idea how this moved me , country girl , through and through , to watch a family lose their homes , their history , its just not funny at all, its heart breaking , small communities feel it , now few villages have the same families in them because rich townies buy them as holiday homes , and the children are forced into towns and cities for work ... crying inside , thinking of my childhood home and all my friends and i driven away by need , Sussex now a commuter belt , IF I WIN THE LOTTERY , I WILL BUILD HOMES THAT THOSE PEOPLE CAN GO HOME FROM THE CITIES TO , REUNITE US , YEAH I KNOW MY NAME .. SPOILER*** It's almost beyond comprehension with ALL the people involved in this build that an entire loft was built in the luxury cottages at tremendous cost and NOBODY thought about how to get up to it. Even if they thought they would just use a ladder and discovered later it was against Health and Safety regulations, they are trying to get the building "listed" so they can charge Guests more. You would think they would be dealing with all the local authorities. But NOBODY thought of it?! I think somebody needs to be fired.😟 The planner? The builder? Themselves? George?!🥺 LL
How much money have you got? I'll take all that and anything else you have and still not finish the job. I knew that builder wasn't going to be on cost or on time before he even started because he was making excuses before he lifted a hammer. As for the stone workers, they saw him coming.
I don't like the presenter. He's naturally negative and the producers obviously tell him to say something positive to balance it out. Every other word is money. People who take on these kinds of projects are driven by their hearts not their pockets.

Somehow I feel the builder and the planner cheated this honest couple.
