  • The National Service of Thanksgiving to Celebrate The Diamond Jubilee Of Her Majesty The Queen
    St Paul's Cathedral, Tuesday 5th June 2012
    The combined Choirs of
    St Paul's Cathedral and Her Majesty's Chapel Royal
    are directed by
    ANDREW CARWOOD
    Director of Music, St Paul's Cathedral
    The Organ of St Paul's Cathedral
    is played for the Service by
    SIMON JOHNSON
    Organist and Assistant Director of Music
    The Wren Brass Ensemble
    accompanies the hymns
    'Old Hundredth' and 'Cwm Rhondda'
    Hymn
    All people that on earth do dwell,
    Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
    Him serve with fear, his praise forth tell,
    Come ye before him, and rejoice.
    The Lord, ye know, is God indeed,
    Without our aid he did us make;
    We are his folk, he doth us feed,
    And for his sheep he doth us take.
    O enter then his gates with praise,
    Approach with joy his courts unto;
    Praise, laud, and bless his name always,
    For it is seemly so to do.
    For why? the Lord our God is good:
    His mercy is for ever sure;
    His truth at all times firmly stood,
    And shall from age to age endure.
    To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
    The God whom heaven and earth adore,
    From men and from the Angel-host
    Be praise and glory evermore. Amen.
    Words: William Kethe (d.1594)
    Tune: Old Hundredth / Genevan Psalter (1551)
    arr. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

    The thundering power of the organ, and the song of a composer, in a sacred place, all caught up in an atmosphere reverberating with praise for a Holy God, unseen but for the majesty and countless variety in creation of what we call nature !! Every praise to The Lord God Almighty, and the Prince of Peace , the Lord Jesus Christ....... and for salvation offered to mankind for all time. Great is the name of The Lord.

    Surely one of the great hymns, enhanced here by the superb choir, organist and musicians. Made all the greater due to the brilliance of RVW's arrangement. Augmented by the peerless architecture of Sir Christopher Wren. What a combination!

      Why is his faithlessness relevant? As RVW himself famously said, "There is no reason why an atheist could not write a good Mass." Funny, too, he doesn't look unlike Richard Dawkins - but clearly has more respect ecclesiastical traditions than Dawkins.

      @sapper82 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      But RV-W was NOT an Atheist, he was an Agnostic. He believed in something, just wasn't sure what.

    A wonderful piece of film for the 50th year of her Coronation in 2010.
    This hymn marks the terrible fight for the English language. The hymn was written around 1562 by William Kethe who was hiding, exiled in Geneva during Queen Mary's dreadful period of burning over 300 English Protestants to death. The first person Mary ordered burnt to death was burnt for translating the Bible into English. To read and speak the Bible in English is a right we all take to easily, without thought and for granted and enjoy to this day.
    Kethe translated the Geneva Psalter Bible into English... a capital offence with punishment of burning alive. Kethe went further... He translated the Bible and working with printers produced the very first small Bibles... ever... and in English... so that a man, woman or child may be able to read a Bible within their very house or carry one with them. This is the
    precurser of the very bookshelf Bible in your house this morning, and was the Bible carried by William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell and John Knox. It was a massive move forward in education and the need for the English poor to learn to read and speak the Bible in English.
    Kethe returned to England and died in Dorset as Rector of Child Okeford.

      The music was composed by a Frenchman, Louis Bourgeois, in exile in Geneva. Kethe indeed wrote the English lyrics but he wasn't in exile at the time ; England had a Protestant monarch (Elizabeth I) by 1562 and he had returned to the country. (Mary had died four years earlier.)

    Not his best: why do Anglicans always lengthen the last three notes of every phrase? So slow and tedious! Now turn to the Huddersfield Philharmonic Chorus "Guide me Oh thou great Jehovah" to hear how we sing in Yorkshire!!!!
