That’s not a 5KX that’s a dresskx. I love both watches, but it’s kind of a weird comparison. The actual 5KX would have been a better comparison.

I personnally don't like the 5kx dive style model. The dresskx on the other hand, pure beauty.
They’re just big. I wish Seiko would ditch the see through case backs. It makes them thicker. At least give us a few affordable watches without it. They just wanna price people out of small stuff. It’s petty.

I 100% agree. I would advise anybody to not believe the online hype and go check them out in boutiques.
Every youtuber and their aunts advertise them as a huge deal, so classy etc. Nah. They're big, they're a bit weird, to each his own but there isn't anything that special about them.
Oh and for that matter, the seller told me he wouldn't ever give me a discount on it because Seiko harrass them when they give discounts, so they just gave up. " Just as we gave up on checking their misaligned bezels " he added. Can't argue with that.
I have no hate towards Seiko, quite the opposite, I keep looking for opportunities with that brand.
Yeah, I hate that Seiko 5 logo. Looks hideous. I don't know why Seiko got rid of the SKX like. Same with the SARB line of watches. Those were the most popular watch models under $500

I am wearing a Seiko SKX aa I type this. I couldn't stand having to shake the watch to give it power, so I midded it with a Seiko NH35. While I had it apart, I installed a sapphire crystal.
I have plenty of ISO rated dive watches. What I like about the 5KX watches is being able to wind them without unthreading the crown. Since they have 100 meter water resistance, I swim with them without worrying.
As someone who didn't get into the hobby with an skx, I find it very difficult to pick a skx over the 5kx/dresskx. Obviously no one likes a price hike but purely on the specs I would pick the modern version every time.
Surely the 200m water resistance is important even if it never gets wet, right?
But seriously, it is a better watch overall I think. If the 5kx models didn't have that horrible font "automatic" then I would probably own multiples. It just looks so silly.
@@stefanstankovic9006 I was joking, hence the "even if it never gets wet" and "but seriously". Yes, 100m is more than enough. The SKX only still talked about because of nostalgia and a first-love effect.
This is a 'DressKX' so it is smaller but the 5KX is 42.5mm in diameter and 46mm lug to lug, so much more like the SKX. Not a useful comparison, I think. Nice looking watches.
What was the actual MSRP on an SKX? $150 was a very good "street price" but the new ones can also be found for well below MSRP as well...
Let's also keep in mind that $150 in 2015 is $200 today and $190 (a more common price according to articles from 2015) is $250.
If Citizen could put the upgraded Miyota 8204 hand-wind / hack movement in their venerable NY0040, upping the game, I don't see why Seiko couldn't have just dropped the 4R-36 in the SKX, and kept it going, of course, at a slightly higher price. Just try to find a BNIB SKX J-model for under $500 now.
Would hurt them in cannibalising their more expensive models, as people would see no reason in spending the extra money. Why they needed to make their entry level worse value, so they can heighten their prices. It works, so good business moves, though also anti consumer.
Put the DressKX on a Strapcode bracelet, and you can argue it's a perfect watch for someone who doesn't want to get too financially deep into the hobby-but who wants something that looks nice in the office, on a date, or hanging out. It also has Seiko quality, gets respect from other watch enthusiasts, and pretty much fits everyone.
You can always get an Orient.
I got the SRPE69 as my first automatic/mechanical watch two years ago and it brought me into watches so much. The all black dial was tacticool and stylish when I got it, not realizing I effectively chose to make this a daytime only watch by doing so. Honestly still love it despite what I know now since it did mark the start of a new journey for me.
You won't have a misaligned bezel if there is no bezel ! 😂😂😂
I’ve never though that this, or similar lines of Seiko, were the intended replacement for the SKX. I think the turtle is more like the modern-day version of the classic SKX. Seiko just need to come out and say it.
By saying nothing, they are also paving the way to re-issue the SKX in the future.

The watch I bought when I decided to buy my first automatic (after discovering my grandfather's Doxa and my father's Zodiac and being bitten by the bug) was a Seiko 5: specifically, an SNK805. 7S26 movement, of course. The price was $99. Besides an early 80s quartz dress watch, this remains my only Seiko. I've never had an SKX, and now that prices are silly, I suppose I never will. I do have a Citizen EcoDrive Promaster BN0150-28E, also a 200M ISO rated diver, and a better watch in every way than the much-loved SKX.
I have an SRP 777, which I love, very similar to the SKX. Bought the same street style watch because it was all black and thought it would be similar. Returned it immediately. just didn’t feel close in quality or performance.

I purchased a used SKX007, the warranty card is stamped from The Time Teller in 2017. Had the 009 for years as well, great watches and value before the increase in used prices.

I'd take an Orient Kamasu 2 over any sub-$1000 diver from Seiko (and I did), including the SKX.
I tried to give the 5KX a chance.🤔 I bought the SRPE60. Aside from sizing the bracelet to my wrist; I never wore it.😶 Six months later, I sold it.😒
in 2005 I paid $125 for my skx173 , big money in those days.

The 5KX was not supposed to be a replacement for the SKX. It is it's own thing. Comparing the two and being harsh on it is unfair in my opinion. The 5KX is in its own group of watches. The SKX is in its own group of watches.
Funny thing is, even if you put a watch in a winder, it will still need to be adjusted every couple weeks. I adjust my watches quite often. Maybe that’s just me. And if you don’t have hacking, if you know what you’re doing, you can finagle the second hand to get it where ya want.
The 5KX was my first automatic watch. Unfortunately it was destroyed during an eviction. Planning on getting a replacement

I have the SKX 007 and 009. I find myself not wearing them as often for its intended purpose because they are discontinued.
I wear my SKX007 daily because fuck it. But also I know that, with the except of the dial, parts for the SKX are plentiful. Beat it to hell. It can take it. 5 years of daily SKX use can attest to that.

Got mine in November of 2021. The Seiko 5 SRPD55. I wear it almost every day. I can’t swim, so the 100m WR is perfect for me, just for handwashing. But the prices are rediculous nowdays. I got mine for 278€, which was around 299$. Recently saw one in a local watch shop for 340€, which is 363,8$. That’s too much.
I agree - if they just put a threaded crown on it I would probably have 4 of them.
The 5KX is a great beginners watch. But it's a consumer watch vs the SKX which is an actual tool watch. I get the controversy in that they "look" like the same watch. They both serve their respective purposes well enough.
I guess maybe Seiko knew that they couldn't keep the SKX in the affordable range? And since so many saw it as entry level watch...they decided that was more important vs the true "Driver's" capabilities. Easier to sell entry level watch than a ISO Certified Diver.
Hopefully one day Seiko gives us the SKX re- release with a sapphire upgrade and the obvious movement upgrade...maybe even 6R?

That seems like the logical thing to do (that would absolutely be great); sadly, SEIKO has a rich history of defying logic and alignment.
The 'street style' thing has nothing to do with the bezel; it's entirely about the colourway. In fact that specific DressKX is the *only* one in the 'street style' collection without a bezel.

Seriously though I'm about to pull the trigger on hmthe Seiko 7548-7000, that's the quartz SKX. It's about $330 altogether but maaaaan I really think that's the move right now. What do you think?

I love my SRPG27 except the bracelet is awful. Big downgrade from my SKX. Are all 5KX bracelets this bad?
I’d give up 100M of water resistance for the upgraded 4R movement which is better thay 7S26. More people prefer an upgraded movement over 100M of water resistances. And as far the price there are many factors…partly inflation, and the other part was seikos we’re being sold but gray market vendors buying from Japan.
5KX is good for new watch collectors, but for us old bois the SKX still got that soul which the former doesn't seem to quite have even though it's refined in every way
We all know of some guy who bought a Rolex for $300 in 1968, or whatever. Those days are over. Fortunately, plenty of Seiko divers that compete with the skx available new or used for $200 to $400.
Tge 5kx is a great value at $150 to $200.

Indeed, it was like doomsday when SKX was discontinued. What is Seiko thinking? Even Casio knows you cannot stop producing legendary models, that is why F-91W and Square G-Shock are still going strong.
Okay: I truly get how some folks hacked a hairball when the SKX disappeared and the "5KX" showed up sometime later, but I think more than a bit of the hostility is a tad misplaced: other than the desire for street-cred, the lack of ISO certification is a non-issue for all but a fraction of the people buying the things, a fact that likely wasn't lost on Seiko: said certification isn't particularly cheap to achieve, so the decision was made to swap that for something with broader appeal, like...a movement that hacks and hand-winds. (Yes, people moaned about the lack of this in the SKX...short memories, maybe?) Meanwhile, anyone truly in need of a watch with all the proper diver's bonafides can snag a Prospex Turtle for well under $400...and if that still seems a tad steep: whats the going rate for a clean, used SKX right now?
I have a Seiko 5 sports. I only got it because it looked cool to me and was the Chun Li edition. I liked it because of that and paid the damned premium for it. I don't care for a name brand most of the time which is why I prefer to get the Aliexpress homages. They have the look but you get far more for your money. The SKX looks great but my addiesdive gives me sapphire and has everything else for $60. Seiko needs to give us sapphire and a screw-down crown if they're going to ask for over $200. I'd get it over the homage if it had these. I tried the Orient Mako II route and regretted it because the crystal broke easily. My Invictas are far tougher. The kicker is that my pro diver and Technomarine cost me only $60 as well.
Any excuse to talk about the Skx is fine with me. It was easy to buy them for $150 but msrp was around $499 if I remember right.
I have not seen a real review of the san martin SN0120 military chronograph. I bought for 120$ but right now 100. It's my favorite watch right now. For the price the lume and build are better then others.
The lack of the screw down crown really bothers me. Sure it’s rated to 100+ meters but I do not trust that overtime. Seems like a really lame way to cut corners. I do dive and spearfish and swim and surf with my watches regularly.

-$315 for that dress-KX is just ok in light of the fact I got a micro brand field watch in titanium case, NH38 movement, 100m water resist, sapphire crystal, signed rubber strap, screw down signed crown for same price. Seiko could have easily put a sapphire crystal on the new 5 KX series without a big price increase. They just chose not to because it will conflict with their elevating price scale towards Prospex .

I think the 5kx would be LESS, of an issue if they just called it a sports watch instead of a "dive style" watch. Also, way too much cash money
Like many already stated, that is a weird comparison. There are all the SRPD models that are almost like the SKX. 22mm lugs and other dimensions. That dresskx is just nothing like the SKX.

(haven't seen the video yet) i just want to say that i wish i was financially capable during the spec monster era, now all the watches i want are discontinued and severely jacked up in price and now all i get is the equivalent of a Chinese knock off.
my current job demands to be time precise and is not very good pay yet quite physical and i can end up in all kind of scenarios and weather, so i ended up buying chinese spec monster homage of watches that are no longer affordable for the role i need them for.
I'm in complete agreement with you, Jory. It’s maddening beyond words that SEIKO discontinued our beloved SKXs and I'll always hate all things 5KX for the exact same reasons you've covered ad infinitum. It’s always good seeing your remarkably clean SKX, btw.

A non hackable movement is a deal-breaker in my opinion. I like to be able to set my watches precisely to the second. I'd give up 100 m of water resistance to have a hackable movement. I don't know why they got rid of the screw down crown though. They certainly could have kept that.

The SKX wasn't my first "real"watch, it was my last (two years ago). I'm wearing it now. I like the 007 so much, I'm buying another one tomorrow. (I'll wear it on the rubber for a while). The 5KX is for newbies who don't know what they're missing.
