I enjoyed this video. I bought the Apogee Mic+. The documentation included was sorely lacking. No mention of the fact that the LEDs actually serve 3 purposes, which you completely explained. I was thinking about to sending it back, but now I will keep it. Thanks!

Oooph. That new gain system is a pain. But the metering is great.
Great comparison review Mike. I know for me, the biggest complaint I have is how sensitive the Apogee MiC is to wind. You've done a great job with placement and controlling the wind, but if someone is using it directly, it absolutely needs a pop screen.
I would assume any OTG cable should work with Apogee Mic Plus if you cannot use USB-A connector.

96K seems to have a midrange resonance/ring that I don’t hear in the Plus; both have more “presence boost” than I like. But of course that can be EQ’ed out.

Ok. So how do you use a mic such as this and charge the iPad etc. Seems like a big problem, recording and seeing that the iPad’s running out of juice.

Hello, I already own a 96k version- I understand this is small diaphragm. So I’m interested if buying a large condenser (budget) is better? like a $70 range. You think it’s worth buying one or these small Apogee mic can beat these cheap large diaphragm condensers? Thanks!

I've only just discovered this Apogee Mic Plus and was amazed at the sound quality. IMHO one of the best USB mics on the planet designed in California and made in the good ol' USA not China. I guess apart from Podcasters and entry level booth mics it's main P.O.D. is it's portability. This could be a game changer for us pro V/O guys on the move, holidays etc and need to take our show on the road again (with apologies to Willie) and not lose too much quality over our normal pro studios. Retails $349 down under which is high end for this type of mic, but maybe worth the investment so we don't lose or miss out on projects when we're out of town.
Hi Mike. I had quite success in plunging a Yeti to an S8 Samsung which is an Android, although its not written any where. Is there a chance it will work with the Apogee?
Please help!!! I’ve been up for 5-6 hours trying to find a mic that I can plug directly into my iPad and use to record using the built in video recorder that comes standard in iPhones and iPads. The new Apogee Mic looks good but will it pickup as an Omni mic in a jam session? I need a mic for recording on my iphone7 while about an average of 10 feet away. I use my IPhone as a song book and play lead acoustic guitar. I need the mic at a central location while we play music and the more centrally located the better balance in the recording. Any suggestions would be helpful. We entertain small non-profit audiences so I need something in the $200 range.Thanks
At cursory listen, the Plus is a hair fully, rounder, bassier, but just a hair, and it's just enough. I like it, especially for a self contained super compact and portable rig. Mic, tablet, done. Very cool.

Bit late replying but...the better the mic the worse it will sound in an untreated room.
Using a tlm 103 in an untreated room is like driving a Ferrari in the desert.
Treating a room is not too difficult or expensive, it is soundproofing that gets complicated.

The Mic plus sounds a bit fuller, rounder, more pleasant. This seems be the best sounding, most portable, simplest and most affordable (for the quality) solution for voiceover.
I’m looking for the “best” microphone with the following features: headphone jack, usb for Windows, lightning connector for iOS, XLR, 24-bit/96kHz, and switchable stereo/cardioid. Oh, and native usb driver support in Windows without ever needing to download drivers. Shock mounts, too.
it's always a bit baffling when people say you gotta "throw the whole thing away and invest in another set up if you decide to upgrade" Just sell it 30% off and use that money to fund your next mic.
New to the podcasting game. I record remotely with a couple of other guys, would either of these mics allow me to hear them at the same time though either the headphone jack on the mic plug or Bluetooth on the 96k?

I was considering the plus for on the go recording. I need something easy in hotels to continue long projects that require constant updates. Do you feel this would be good solution? I do have my "regular" gear that I use in my home studio (somewhat portable) I've had to do it....but it's so hard to set up and take down for quick lines or reads.

there was very little latency if you used logic, but there is with garageband, because you could not adjust the latency. Headphone jacks usually negate that.
We don't have color photo receptors in our peripheral vision. That's why it's much easier to see movement than minor color changes outside the center of our visual field.

I think the reason they made the knob rotary is bigger sensitivity to adjusting the gain? Like, as opposed to 0-10 in one rotation they could do 0-5 and make it twice as sensitive? My theory, anyway.

My 2 96k have been relegated to portable instrument mics and the plus is my main very portable vocal mic. I have a se x1 also sometimes I take with me. For as small as it is it make an awesome mic to carry around when I need a quick mic. They sound identical to my ears
Wow, Mic Plus is super smooth and warm sounding. Very impressive for what it is and the size. Both seem great. Seems ideal for voice. Would anyone recommend this for acoustic guitar?

And now for one of life's greatest mysteries... why is it always so hot in the booth?
U can make a cable fairly easy if u are good at soldering. One of my 96k has been opened and changed to a normal micro USB connector. On the 96k u can use one of the rubber band style clamp mounts I add a piece of rubber around the body and it works great but with the plus it doesn't work because of the dials.
Does that affect the sound quality? (Sorry if its a stupid question, I am a non techie)

Theoretically the rotary encoder knob will never suffer from the crackle and noise of a "dirty" potentiometer knob. The inconvenience is certainly mitigated by the three-light meter. I'd be surprised if you ever had any real difficulty dialing in your levels.
Funnily enough, there have been plenty of cases when mechanical encoders have given considerable trouble, becoming jumpy, unresponsive or even going backwards. This happens when the (non-conductive) bearing grease that gives them a nice smooth feel seeps out onto the contact area. Thankfully opening them and cleaning the affected area tends to be quite easy, and generally is all that's needed to restore them to perfect operation.
I'd like to see if there's any difference in sound between a regular dynamic Mic with a cord and a wireless dynamic Mic.

I like the large USB connection on the first mic (96k). Seen many mini-usb connections wear out. So been avoiding Blue Yeti. OMG $250? Just get an Audio-Techna + any USB audio interface.

Hi everyone, Would you recommend Apogee MiC + for home studio? I would like to use it for voiceover jobs. If not, what other microphones would be appropriate for this? Would just a mic be enough for a voiceover job? Thanks.
@@shiwomino5775 You know I record my scratch vocals with the in built Macbook Pro mic and lots of my professional friends say "sounds good, I would not have known". I of course still re-record them properly with a good mic and pre amp etc, but my point is that if an omni mic built into my laptop, recording sat at my desk can fool people into thinking it is a decent recording, then I'm sure a USB mic would be good enough for pro work. I have recorded some jingles with my daughters ART MOne and thought it good enough to not need to redo them, so the Apogee will be at least as good as that, but "should" be better. The ART is well worth checking out as it can be found for about $100 and is also 24/96. I would not buy a USB mic that is only 16 bit.
The little rubber feet on the tripod are the smallest shock mounts on the planet!

I thought the same. The Mic + sounded as good or better when he was speaking quieter, but as soon as he got louder is sounded a little hard compared to the 96K.

They both sound like you are in a small booth; but you are!I don't like that small booth sound. Right, get a large Diaphragm mike and a Tascam recorder.
1st: dont even give multitple usb plug options
2nd: give extra useless wires in the box when they could have added small converters with one wire 💀 R.I.P designers

Shoot, all the reviews I'd read of the Apogee Mics have been very positive so I made and offer on an eBay sale of an 96K to use as my first mic for VO. After seeing this video I am hoping my offer will be rebuked so I can pass on purchasing. Murphy's law. On the look out for a good quality "travel" mic.
I couldn't make out any sound difference between the two. They both sound terrible! Honestly. I've watched more of your mic reviews than I want to admit, and, while there is sometimes an appreciable difference when comparing side by side, I've never heard a mic that made your voice sound less than golden. Until now! Most of the time, we're just geeks splitting hairs. I'm so grateful for this review because I have a friend looking to buy her first entry-level mic, and I heard good things about this. No way would I ever recommend this to anyone, especially for the price!
