    THANK YOU for saying that! It took me years to realize how important the recording space is. So recently, I installed acoustic panels, and it was shocking to know that even my phone's teeny tiny mic has better quality than a Neumann in an untreated room.

      Oh yes, a perfect irony - the better the microphone, usually the more sensitive, ergo the better your recording environment needs to be...

  • @MikaelNitscheDrums
    @MikaelNitscheDrums 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Neumann is a lot more sensitive and picks up the lower frequencies better from a distance than the AKG, so the "bad recordings" didn't really sound THAT bad quality-wise. Sure, there was a lot of background noise and reverb (in the shower), but the sound was great!

    I watched this one and your fair comparison videos. I love both of them because they both say what I've been working with for 10 years. I've had the same USB since 2011 and it always sounded its best because I treated my space well (and because I cleaned my audio which really wasn't that much post work). If I can get paid work on a USB anyone can with treated space. I recently upgraded to an XLR because I am ready to take on better jobs.

    The most I paid for was a Blue Yeti with a pop filter and a pair of headphones. 1000 is pathetically shit for that price.
    I'd spend about that much on a studio set up of equipment and shit I bet. Also, pretty sure most people don't go for 1000 dollars unless they want to meet a certain image.

    Good informative video - BUT you should really consider the statement "If you have a large diaphragm microphone there is a preety good chance you are gonna be ok.". Be aware that any decent quality small diaphragm condensor will do the job just as good as the same level of large diaphragm microphone! I dare you ;-) "Large diaphragm" is as much of a buzzword as is the word "Tube" in front of the word "microphone". Oddly enough this "large diaphragms are better than small diaphragms" just seems to be commonly accepted as the truth - but it is not. ;-)

      Kami Coser unless it's treated, it's horrible especially for low voices. The smaller the space, the lower frequency of the reflections, and those destroy voice over recordings. And it'll
      Be impossible to mix the vocals over music too!

  • @RaymondSolo

    Nice. Id like to add that the best way to deal with standing waves is to have your walls at odd angles. Also, a tiny booth is not always the best way to record a voice (of any kind), it may work perfectly for one persons voice but not at all for another.
    I do agree with you that voice-over requirements aren't as creative or strict as a singer in a band (or soloist), but a very small space can make your recording sound to compressed. This can be quite obvious if a singer has a big/loud singing style (screamer) some people even talk/speak with a loud voice so it may be a good idea to have an extra room that's bigger in case you run into one.
    In fact, it may be best to start out building a good control room for all your mixing, processing, mastering etc. and book time in an existing studio for tracking.

  • @trevormoorman624
    @trevormoorman624 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    What do you think about using a public recording studio? I am a beginning voice actor, so I don't have the kind of money to spend getting either a good mic or good sound proofing. Therefore, I would think using a public recording studio would be best, but I don't know how to find out if any are near me. Thanks for any advice beforehand!

    • @BoothJunkie
      @BoothJunkie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can always book time in a recording studio, the trouble is most studios will likely charge as much, or more per hour than you are making. Check out my "improvised vocal booths" playlist (th-cam.com/play/PLzEW-dm_vsRu8OD_caE2mg8YTerbGgOoW.html) -- you may have a totally viable recording space and not even know it!

    What makes one Mic so much more expensive than the other? - Surely the manufacturing process can't be that much different between them?

    • @guitaraoke4573
      @guitaraoke4573 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Homer Simpson things cost what people are prepared to pay for them - not how much they cost to make, that being said the expensive mic would've cost more to design, the electronics inside would be of higher quality, and probably is made from more expensive materials.

    • @josephbrandenburg4373

      Homer Simpson Sometimes the tube sometimes the name and the success behind it. The price range under 500 dollars should be relatively linear to the performance.
      For example Rode makes really nice mics with the best technology, but they are not going to make it under 100 dollars.

      Oh yes it can. Fine German craftsmanship vs Chinese factory ethic are worlds apart. Neumann uses more and purer gold (anytime you see yellow on a circuit board it's likely gold plated.) Then comes the tuning - some frequencies you want a mic to reject, such as very low rumble and very high freq that loop (feedback)Germans are always exact while mass produced mics are not even tested.

    Great video, Mike. And very revealing about the recording space. I got the go-ahead for a job I auditioned for 2 months ago (late April 2018) while I was on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The client needed the final read right away. Fortunately I had a Sennheiser e935 dynamic, Apogee One, and my laptop aboard. I set up our stateroom for "sound-deadening" and did the read. Scary how good it sounded, especially in comparison to the U87, Vinetch 473 Preamp, and Pro Tools in my home studio. Is there a difference? Yes, but it's so slight that the client accepted the read without a problem. I am a microphone lover but I'm also a realist. That's why I always travel with the Sennheiser/Apogee portable rig.

    This is an outstanding series!
    I have a microphone question...
    I'm setting up a small video recording studio in my home that will be used to record product presentations for use on our website / You Tube.
    These presentations are made by women. They aren't stationary - they'll be moving and demonstrating. (Think QVC in the spare room.)
    I'm thinking that lapel mics might not be ideal due to rustle and bustle.
    Since they won't be sitting at a desk where they could be close to a mic I'm thinking shotgun - but what do I know?
    Room treatment per your and other instructionals is in the works. Definitely going with the Zoom H5 in the "good audio will improve sketchy video but not the other way around theory.
    Might you have any thoughts in the "low budget" category?
    Thanks!!
