I watched this a couple days ago, and I had the same thought about The Other Generation. That song holds up so well, and is still so relatable and relevant today.

Thanks for defending! Love this film and personally felt the criticisms against it were mostly just too harsh! Wonderful songs as well!

I don't think people realize how groundbreaking it really was. I agree with you. There's lots of joy to be found in this one. Underrated I'd say

Thank you for reviewing this movie I’m actually showcasing this on my virtual weekly group on musicals and since it’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month I Picked this movie. You gave me some ideas and how to address moments that might be as you stated “cringy” . A concern I had. The historical reference you made were helpful as well… anyway wish me luck😀

I saw this movie on a re-run on TV when I was a young kid and liked it. Auntie was not Asian. Juanita Hall was bi-racial Black/Irish

Flower Drum Song to Joy Luck Club to Crazy Rich Asians. Wow... As to Hall, she might get a pass; nothing could be worse than Joel Grey playing Asian in Remo Williams or how about Kate Hepburn playing Asian? Hall was still a woman of colour. Also, Yul Brynner played the King of Siam in "The King and I," but he claimed Mongolian heritage. Lou Diamond Phillips is Asian, but plays Indigenous and Latin roles. Finally, FDS featured Japanese & Filipino actors playing Chinese roles. Some people have a problem with it. I still liked the musical and overlooked it.

You also have John Wayne playing Genghis Khan which seems hard to believe.

I agree there was some cringey stuff in there, but still....this was waaaay ahead of its time!

Right and I honestly feel like it isn't much more cringy than nearly every movie made in the 60s and they wouldn't have such a diverse cast for 30 more years! Glad you watched it!

What was cringey to you? It was really sexist, but contextualize it for those oppressive times. (Still oppressive.)

I'm honest that it's got outdated elements but for its time it also had groundbreaking ones too. It has elements to appreciate

It's still considered a classic by Asian American audiences, at least us old fogies. David Henry Hwang's interview summed up the problems best. I think his version was underrated but lacked the original 's scale.
