Testing 3rd Party Docks / Adapters after Switch 5.0.0 Firmware Update

  • Hi, this video aims to show if 3rd party equipment like portable docks will 'brick' your Nintendo Switch after the 5.0.0 update. There have been many reports of people 'bricking' their Nintendo Switch by using 3rd party docks.
    In this video I test out power banks, controller adapters & converters and finally two 3rd party docks.
    The timestamps are below -
    3:03 - Power Banks.
    4:34 - Controller Adapters / Converters
    8:09 - Third Party Portable Docks.
    Remember that your equipment & electricity supply may differ from the equipment shown in the video so your results may vary. Use 3rd party equipment at your own risk as Nintendo will only provide support for licensed products.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    If Nintendo wanted to eliminate third-party docks they should just charge $40 like all the knock-offs do. The only reason why knockoffs are made is because Nintendo sells theirs for $80.

      thats not true, I bought a third party dock because its portable, the switch dock is not.

      ReedSolomon
      The 1st party dock is fairly portable. Many of the 3rd pary docks are of a similar size to the original. The main difference being quality and price.

    • @zybch
      @zybch 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They should just make a dock that doesn't absolutely suck. The price isn't relevant.

    • @samponsite2364
      @samponsite2364 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Or why not charge fucking rediculous amounts ;D like a bunch of wankers, for an item that is worth 20$, then make every other switch dock ruin your system so they can control the market :P? Good Job nintendo, Good Job. All for a fucking useless update which added jack fuck all for the community, and did nothing other than cover their ass from hackers yet was given the title 5.0. Now I'm stuck with an overpriced shitty piece of plastic, which isn't portable and scratches your 300$ tablet.

    Switches have been bricked when using third party docks since way before the 5.0.0 update. There are fairly regular reports of this happening on the Switch subreddit.
    However, here's Spawn Wave with his recently damaged Switch (which happened after the 5.0.0 update):
    th-cam.com/video/elOqMKln_WI/w-d-xo.html&t=11
    It also highlights the fact that Switch owners NEED to be able to backup their save games - either to a micro SD card or to the Cloud. Come on Nintendo, get with the program!

      Thanks so much for the reply! I hadn't even thought that the change in design could mean a difference between bricking and non-bricking the Switch.
      I suppose I could always get another official dock and DIY with the parts in that to get the Sfans dock to work properly. I'm pretty sure the insides are identical. I just really don't like the traditional dock design.

    Vince the most common comment about bricking 3rd party docks comes from the console being powered off and back on while on the docks.

      Interesting. I will test that now and get back to you.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  6 ปีที่แล้ว +57

      Hi again, I just tested it and recorded it in case it did brick my Switch but it didn't. This is what I did.... Using FastSnail dock I displayed it on the TV and used sleep mode, it worked and came back on again when livened up. I then fully shut down the Switch while docked by holding down the power button. Again it came back on again while docked. I did exactly the same on the SFANS dock and it didn't come back on automatically after I powered down fully but all I had to do was pull out and re insert the USB-C plug and then it displayed on the TV. Maybe if you did this test 50-100 times it may cause a problem but from this little test it didn't behave any differently than before the 5.0.0 update :-)

    Good video Vince! Although for me personally I think it's likely that what's bricking the systems is the fact that people are using third party cables, whereas you used pro controller cables for your dock and the official one for your potable docks as well. But whatever I don't care because I'm never using a portable dock. Instead I think it's billions times better to go with buying a smaller shell for your official dock and making it yourself

  • @mattoverminder
    @mattoverminder 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Educated speculation from my POV. I've worked with electronics quite a bit, but nothing as complex as a Switch. If I were to try to pinpoint any common device that would potentially brick a Switch, it wouldn't be the dock, but the 3rd party power brick that may come with it. That's not to say that docks can't cause issues, or that Nintendo power supplies can't also fail, but I am very certain that they have much tighter tolerances for quality control. A 3rd party PSU, especially over the complex USB-C just seems to have the most potential to cause problems, IMO.

      The best way to know whether or not they're good is to actually measure the voltage and current on an oscilloscope and see how closely it matches up to the original dock, that'll tell you immediately with absolute certainty just how bad any of these docks actually are.
      Of course most people don't have oscilloscopes (me included) so that isn't really going to work for most people so the better option is to only buy the good well-known brands, the three that I know of are Genki, Skull & Co. , and Gullkit.

    My Switch was bricked *immediately* when I connected it to the Nyko dock. It was playing fine on an official dock in one room, I went to move to the other room where I had the Nyko dock, and as soon as I plugged it in, an error appeared on the screen telling me to restart the system. I hit the power button, and it never got past the boot screen again. I tried numerous reboots, leaving it sit there for minutes or hours at a time with no progress. Can't access Recovery/Maintenance mode, and disconnecting the battery did nothing to help, either. I've used the Nyko dock without issues before the 5.0 update, and this was the first time I tried using it after. It's clearly not affecting everyone, and I'm glad that you didn't have any problems, but it seems clear that there's something about the latest update that's causing a sudden upsurge in random brickings. Time will tell what exactly is going on, but in the meantime I can't play the new Kirby game and I'm out 300+ hours of progress in Fire Emblem Warriors even if I do get the hardware replaced. I don't know whether to blame Nintendo or Nyko, but somebody out there clearly screwed up and I feel like they owe me a new Switch and then some for the data I can't ever get back.

  • @TheDeelunatic
    @TheDeelunatic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My guess on this broken switch thing has to do with the type of dock and using the power brick that came with the 3rd party docks. In this video you left out a strong detail of the third party power brick. You used DC batteries which are better about the keeping good power sine waves, and the 1st party Nintendo power supply. It is possible that the 3rd party power supplies are not keeping the power going into the switch "clean" Which is leading to popping the power fuse in the system. (I believe this is covered in some other video somewhere but I still believe that this is the most likely scenario.)

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are right. Although some people have commented on here that they were using the Nintendo power supply when it bricked it seems that the majority were using the Nyko docks with the Nyko power supply.

  • @Oboe5life
    @Oboe5life 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My nyko dock broke my usb C port before the 5.0 update, but it BRICKED it immediately after. Nyko confirmed to me that it was an issue with the dock most likely. Mine (and many of what I read) bricked after being put into sleep mode.
    You should do a follow up video we’re you boot up a game with online, then put the switch in sleep mode a couple times for 10-15 mins each and see what happens.

    I was actually looking for a video where it states if thrid-party AC adapters have now been made compatible to work with the original Nintendo Switch dock set. Becausse when I tried to plug in a 3rd party AC adapter that I bought on ebay into my dock set, it gave me an error message saying that it wants you to use the Nintendo brand AC adapter instead. Has this issue been addressed so that at least some 3rd party AC adapters for the Switch now works with its original dock set?

    From what I've heard, the console normally gets bricked during game play of games like BOTW because the console is drawing the most power while playing those games. There is something about the console overdrawing power that goes on.

    1st time using my 3rd party dock since 5.0.0 update this morning (last dock you tried in UK)
    Straight to Argos to buy another Nintendo Switch and arranging a repair of my bricked system
    My advice is use the official dock.. nintendo know exactly what they're doing... my device is 2 weeks out of warranty... as we say on Rocket League.. Calculated!

      Thanks for posting, if you have time to post can you remember if it happened as soon as you plugged it or did it take a while after playing and did you use a 3rd party power supply or the Nintendo AC adapter.
      Cheers Vince

      This was using the official charger.
      I completely powered off the Nintendo Switch before connecting the 3rd Party dock.
      The Switch flashed up 'Nintendo' then moments later just the joycon icon was showing on screen.
      It doesn't do anything but this now.
      Even the power off and power on holding both volume buttons doesnt do anything.
      What's weird is if i plug this bricked switch into my official dock... the green light on the dock keeps flashing and i have to remove power to the dock to correct the state of the dock. I.e even removing the bricked Nintendo Switch leaves the official dock unusable without disconnecting the power.

      No it was the UK version of the last dock in this video. Can't think what the device is called and I've actually thrown it away now understandably.
      I'm sending the bricked Nintendo Switch back to Nintendo next week and it will be interesting to see how much they want to charge me for the repair.
      The bricked system has completely drained of power now and it seems that the battery can't be charged.
      I'd like to think Nintendo would just offer the repair for free as a good will gesture but it will more than likely cost a 3rd of the cost of the product i'm sure.
      The worst part about this isn't the hardware failure.. it's Nintendo's terrible account management system.
      I've had a new device since about 1:30 saturday and although i've linked my Nintendo Accounts i cant re-download any past purchases because i need to unregister the live Nintendo Switch console.... can only do this yourself if you have login access to the old device.
      Customer Support is not open until Monday!
      No Rocket Leaugue for me this weekend on Switch :-(

      Hi, if you type FastSnail Switch Dock into Amazon you will see it. In the UK it is called Yuanhot. It might be worth holding off for a while until you see what the outcome is regarding these problems. In another couple of weeks enough information will be out there to work out if there has been an increase in problems after the update. On the UK one on Amazon if you look at the reviews you will see 2 comments on the 1 star (negative) reviews about damaging the Switch, one is recent and one is from way before the update. If you see floods of 1 star reviews coming in from now on then it suggests there is an issue :-)

    I have gotten mine to work with a generic USB C hdmi hub (it looks quite a lot like the fast snail one, except it's white). For some reason display output only seems to work at 720p, but it's still better than the huge dock for traveling. I will be using it in the next month, so by the end I will post a video on if it worked for the extended period of time or not.

    Hey, my switch has been acting funky since this update dropped. I used a Nyko dock with the charger that it came with it...I had it since it launched and didn’t give me any problems until I updated it to 5.0.0, my switch works fine, except it can’t charge...I can dock it, but the green light flashes rapidly when I throw it onto a reg. dock....tried holding down the power...no dice. I’m starting to assume my tv might play a role as to why it stopped charging. I have a 32” roku TV, in order for the dock to work I had to “preview” the hdmi port in a tiny window and my switch would flicker for a moment before recognizing that my switch was in the Nyko dock.

  • @RonyIsaPony

    I honestly think that maybe there is certain revisions of the Switch or there is certain TV's and monitors that may effect this. There also could be a defect in the chips of those docks or an issue with the memory chip. Spawn Wave said that some people are having Switch's brick when they were first released when he took it apart for the first time and said that's most likely the memory chip failing or got fried. So I think that as well could be a factor in this. But I can't prove these points, but hopefully someone figures this situation out.

    I have a Kacosata dock which looks like the fast snail dock but I haven't used it much as it crashed my switch a few times when connecting it and I had to hard reboot so I got worried about permanent damage. With all the worries about the 5.0 update there is no way im going to plug it in now as my warranty is expired and i cant afford a new switch. No problems with usb battery packs or my 8bitdo controller.

      I think I have managed to do that too "craching the Switch".
      I put my Switch in to the official dock, which was not plugged in to the TV for some reason.
      When I come back and pull it out of the dock the screen (on the Switch) refuses to turn on.
      So I tried plugging it directly to the official power cable that comes with the dock and charge indication appeared in one of the top corners of the screen and then went away.
      The screen still refused to turn on, so hold the power button, until the power off/ restart menu appeared, I selected to power off the system and turned it back on again, it worked like nothing had happened.
      ------------------------------------------------------
      I suggest that you only use the original switch dock, even though I think it sucks that you should be afraid of bricking your switch by using a non official one.
      I bought a SH350 (a fast snail) dock just before the 5.0 update and now I'm scared of using it.

  • @LesKing72
    @LesKing72 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You might know by now, but the bricking issues are caused because the Switch is not fully compliant with USB-C standards and it behaves strangely when docked. Systems are being bricked as a result of a power control chip failing, which requires component level repair to replace it

  • @Leviticus7529
    @Leviticus7529 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If people are using those Docs and are having issues they are probably leaving the switch lay flat with the screen up which would cause overheating issues because the switch would be laying on it's air intake vents.

    This also could've just been coincidence, but i had my switch in use for a week or two and my third party dock worked fine. What about rebooting the system with a third party dock installed while battery charge is one of '100%/50%/5%'?What about the possibility of overcharging the battery?

    • @draconic5129
      @draconic5129 ปีที่แล้ว

      The battery has a protection board that stops it from charging once it's full, it also stops it from over discharging if it's empty. This is an absolute requirement on lithium ion batteries this things can get very dangerous if they are overcharged or over discharged (look at what happened to the Samsung note 7).
