Haha rewatching this i love in the terminator scene when Wren says that scene looks like one designed by a VFX artist and not an unfamiliar director, and then you had him on the show and he totally did exactly that with his VFX goggles on the whole time
Probably not but I'm gonna say it is one of the things that really annoy me about him. Especially when looking at huge box office movies like the Marvel movies for instance. It's his job! It's his industry! I feel someone in that type of position should have seen the movies with special effects that are seen by anyone else. Not only to be completely aware of what the industry is releasing but even for job reasons. If someone were to talk to him about a job opportunity or even a project odds are these people will use comparisons to explain what they want (we want to do an effect like they did in X). I'm not saying he has to be a fan but he should have watched so many of the movies he said he didn't. And it's made SO MUCH WORSE when I look at the stuntmen react. "Oh this big movie that is all the rage and is heavy on special effect AND that I have multiple friends who did the stunts? Nah... Not interested..."
The SWTOR Trailers are eeeeepiiiiiic!!! they totally should but youre mistaken its not KOTOR they were for SWTOR the mmorpg if you mean the CGI trailers that is. Just amazing peices of art.
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World has a lot of scenes I'd like to see. Pulling swords out of chests, semi-CG backup dancer demon chicks, enemies turning into coins, interesting cuts. I'd also like to see more about scenes where CG and practical effects mix. Alien vs. Predator had a lot of that.
What I always admired about Reign of Fire as a kid was how they made sense of a giant creature breathing fire. If you look closely you can see that the dragon spits out two separate chemical streams, which when combined create the fire a safe distance away from its face. That's where the influence of these dragons sticks out the strongest to me in that Harry Potter scene as well - clearly the same thought process.
Yup, it's also explained in-movie I think that it's a sort of bio-organic substance that is highly flammable, that the dragons can ignite manually inside their mouth.
I think that's one of the reasons why people tend to think practical looks better, too. With practical, since they need to make that stuff work in real life, they need to put actual thought into how it would actually work, whereas with CGI you really could do anything. Like in Mad Max Fury Road, where every one of those vehicles were a real working vehicle in real life, so they had to make them balance, have enough structural integrity to stay together, enough engine power to move, things like that, where in CGI they could have made those vehicles look any way they liked which could make their design, their movement, etc, look fake. Just that someone thought to have the two chemicals combine makes it look more real even when it's just CGI.
I love how they made the dragons breathe fire in reign of fire. It actually looks like something a real animal could do since, unlike having it coming out as fire, it looks like the dragons shoot two streams of chemicals from either side of the mouth and when they mix they make a pyrophoric substance that ignites in the air.
The effects for the dragons were some of the best EVER! The final duel at the end, right when the dragon is about to breathe fire, it is visibly shaking with rage! One severely P-O'd dragon there! And then he eats an exploding arrow...
It is something that could be real, for sure. Bombadier beetles do something somewhat similar--not shooting flames, but creating a chemical reaction to spray a boiling hot irritant.
@@Dee-nonamnamrson8718 As opposed to Genisys which said "forget the story and characters -- and aside from 1 minute of a deepfake Ahnold, forget the eye candy too".
For the Hercules shot - It's not actually the camera getting closer, as then you'd also see a change in the background for the clouds. Instead, it's the man on a cart, wheeling towards a slightly tilted camera, then they added the foreground in afterward. This allowed the clouds to remain where they were, adding to the visual effect. You could tell this was how it was done for two reasons - first like I said the clouds didn't move. Second, there's a shake on Hercules around 13:33 which is a clear tell that HE'S moving, rather than the camera. I couldn't find any online resources to back my claim, HOWEVER, I did find this video of Hercules beating the crap out of a robot centaur in the 80's: th-cam.com/video/NvPYToFoU2M/w-d-xo.html

When that Terminator jumps up to that higher level he just kind of flies up, you don't really see his legs push on that beam like they'd have to to accelerate him like that. It's very videogamey.
Yes! Exactly. There's no sense of the downward force that would need to be imparted to create that sort of movement. The robot may be super strong and fast, but the force required to propel however many hundreds of kilos that far should be readily apparent, and it just wasn't.
The reason it looks weird is because when he jumps he sharply accelerates toward the Beam and then decelerates before he even gets there. The motion isn’t uniform and looks terrible
And wouldn't the body show physical reaction to the power and momentum of the jump too? The character is just not affected by any physics and the framerate looks off
That’s how it would work through. He would shoot off the ground and decelerate before he gets their. It’s like when you bounce a ball on the ground and it shoots up and slows down at the top.
@@bazonga9085 The point is it isn't a uniform deceleration, which given the apparent speed it should more or less be. (technically not because air resistance but that's not a big factor here)
@@bazonga9085 I think if he was moving at a low enough speed for deceleration due to gravity (like from a bouncing ball) to be immediately apparent to the human eye over that distance, he would also have to move in a parabolic arc to account for that. Instead, he just moves in a sort of straight line, with no curvature. It kinda looks like he was meant to be moving faster to account for the straight line trajectory, but they decided to slow it down so we could better see the detail of him grabbing onto the scaffold and swinging into a standing position. They probably wanted to fine tune the shot some more, but didn't have the time or budget for it, and we got a very short scene that looks a little off as a result.
New viewer and have been randomly bouncing between your guys’ catalog of reactions without being subscribed and Sams rant in this video from over a year ago finally made made me do it! Lmao Keep up the funny insightful work!
Dude there was already an indepth look at those effects. Dont think corridor did it, pretty sure it was the design company working on it. Its basically just art done in VR, then brought into the scene.
9:57 - the problem isn't "we're not used to seeing super strength." The problem is he's accelerating way too slowly off the second jump. It looks like someone shut off the gravity for a moment!
Yep, for example the hulk jumping looks fine even though they make him jump far. acceleration and also how he prepares for the jump makes the shot problematic, he prepares more for the first small jump than the 2nd large jump.
@@Blades500 Yes, but the issue isn''t that an 800 lb machine is able to exert that type of force from one appendage. I can suspend that disbelief. However, what really makes it look unbelievable in this shot (besides the accelerated floaty jump) is that nothing in the environment reacts to the extreme force under it's foot when the machine jumps.
I just love how Niko loves Sam. You can see their mutual admiration and how, after all these years, he's still like "this man is hilarious in his crazy jokes" Everytime Sam is doing something wacky or nuts Niko has the biggest grin in his face and it's just having the time of his life. Hahahaha I love it.
10:00 Our perception of reality has nothing to do with reality. Just because we have never seen someone jump 40 feet doesn't mean we can't imagine what that looks like. It definitely doesn't look like that. Gravity and mass will always move the same way no matter what.
yeah he kinda bounces of weirdly, he'd need to bend his knee more and at the end he slows down too fast. I think Nico tried to explain it, then Wren came with a completely different take and Nico just went with it in the end.
This, if the camera was moving the sky would distort. It would have been much simpler to have him stand on a dolly and roll him forward. Hence the reason his feet are hidden. All practical aside from the annoying lollipop.
Something that I loved about this movie was that they incorporated the idea of wyvern instead of dragons, they always seemed more real to me because the wings and arms are functioned as in bats, and that gives a more "realistic" frame of reference as animals. and the physicality of it. In dragons it is more complicated because strictly speaking they have six limbs and in flight they are more rare to see, the wyvern in the silhouette are like birds of the devil!
@@DarthBiomech it may be considered a b-movie, but it's also a military satire directed by Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall, Robocop) that purposefully presents itself in such a schlocky way (hiring actors vapid in appearance, flat camera work, overblown lighting) to deepen the satire and further the point that he is trying to make about the artificiality surrounding propaganda in the military. The vfx work in the movie is hands down some of the best to come out of the 90s, that much is inarguable.
also one of the only film adaptations that completely opposes the ideals of the original author (the book isn't satirical) which makes it even more interesting
I think what helps in those flashback shots in TDF is that they only show a partial emote from each character before cutting. Like, Linda Hamilton's performance as Sarah Connor in 1991 was basically very highly emotive during intense scenes or action scenes and then in between the action she was very stoic, especially when she's narrating. Great performance because it made you feel like there was a lot going on below the surface. The longest shots of her here are of her being stoic, so they don't have to make her emote too much. Once the action starts and the characters' facial expressions start to change, they did two things that made it easier: 1. slow motion, and 2. they only show the beginnings of an emote, not the entire thing. John's smile fades, but you don't see his full reaction, just that one, simple movement. Part of what made the digital Peter Cushing and the digital Carrie Fisher so weird was that they were emoting in real-time, and the movements of their faces looks wrong, and they were trying to give them complex facial movements because they had long takes and talking.
Good story from what I remember too, and Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale, some fantastic actors. Just a really well done fantasy movie, done in a grown-up way!
Yeah. No one really talks about how well theyve aged. Nothing in those movies really sticks out as looking bad when rewatching. Then the magic toward the end (esp the Dumbledore v Voldemort fight) is great

There's not a whole lot going on as far as effects but the 'push off' scenes in requiem for a dream are shot so well!
I've said this 3 times so far but PUH-LEASE do Back To The Future if you haven't already. It's not heavily VFX but yea please do it
When that Terminator jumps up to that higher level he just kind of flies up, you don't really see his legs push on that beam like they'd have to to accelerate him like that. It's very videogamey.
It’s straight up dreadful. I’m annoyed that these guys were seemingly so accepting of it. Because “super powers” apparently defy physics entirely.
newtons third law
@@wiggy8912 Yeah, while they may be robots, they still have to deal with gravity. It felt really bad to me.
Yes! Exactly. There's no sense of the downward force that would need to be imparted to create that sort of movement. The robot may be super strong and fast, but the force required to propel however many hundreds of kilos that far should be readily apparent, and it just wasn't.
Yep 100%, that's what triggers your brain off about it, he sort of floats

Now that’s a clean burning fire I tell you what
The reason it looks weird is because when he jumps he sharply accelerates toward the Beam and then decelerates before he even gets there.
@@bazonga9085
The point is it isn't a uniform deceleration, which given the apparent speed it should more or less be.

Honestly. If they had him land on both feet and wait a second before jumping again, WAY BETTER

You can see their mutual admiration and how, after all these years, he's still like "this man is hilarious in his crazy jokes"
Everytime Sam is doing something wacky or nuts Niko has the biggest grin in his face and it's just having the time of his life.

It looks like Hercules is on a track, moving in to the camera. He seems to try to keep his balance as he stops at the end.
Sam: starts losing his mind
Wren: Filming on his phone with the biggest smile on his face
Starship troopers. The CGI for the bugs were way ahead of its time.
100% agree. They were amazing. They still hold up pretty well today for a b-movie.
yes
@Pete Smith
You have an interesting opinion on what constitutes as a b-movie. Completely incorrect and stupid, obviously, but interesting.
The way Wren says ‘Terminator’ 😂😂😂

@@Bay_Rg No, it's just wren.
😂😂 it got me! I was like wait what?!
Yea wtf
It's amazing that Reign of Fire's cg still keeps up. Great film.
Good story from what I remember too, and Matthew McConaughey and Christian Bale, some fantastic actors. Just a really well done fantasy movie, done in a grown-up way!
