I bought this myself, based on your previous review. It is very well made and a useful tool to have in your vehicle or when out on a hike in the forest etc. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!
About 7" longer and without the weight on the end, it'd be a great defense tool, that short and with that weight at the end, makes it impractical, because you'd be too close to your attacker, and the end tip makes it totally illegal, makes it a black jack. you can get 1/2 inch steel cable braided so is flexible( them cables with a lock) just cut the locks part, and a handle and epoxy to glue the handle, and that's it...
I've owned one of these for almost a year and never had to use it for self defense. I carry it as a non-lethal weapon when I am out walking the dog. I'm sure it would stop any attack without worrying about taking a life. I definitely would not want to be on the receiving end of this device!
I made something similar back in the 90s, out of the accelerator cable of a truck, those cables bring a welded steel marble to hold the accelerator tab, I wrapped up with cloth tape, and rolled up, and store it on my carry back pack, use it about 3 years later, at the subway in Chicago, it was bad, not for me, lol., that one is a bit short...

For self defence, one whip anywhere and the guy will be on the ground in agony as you walk home. And when you pass in your car the next day he’ll still be there holding his leg.

True. If I get another one (I just saw they released an interesting Whip/monkey fist version) I'll have to remember to film it with my phone. Slow Mo (more frames) and Slow speed are very different. Need to find a tripod mount that can hold my phone as it's wider than the old one.
You can make a similar self defence whip just with electrical cord, fold over the end and bind it with paracord for a handle. It’ll still disable anyone in agony.

Actually a Phone with a window breaker isn't a bad idea, its the one thing your most likely to have if you end up driving into a lake, river, ocean, pond, etc... A retractable one would be ideal of course so you don't have a sharp edge on your phone

As long as your target is nice enough to stay at the proper distance. Once you close distance and engage in close contact, that whip is useless.

Make one. Hollow 3 foot aluminum tube. Heavy gage plastic coated steel wire etc.
