Correction on Kazakhstan, it’s capital city hasn’t changed, the name of the city has. Astana has also been known as Akmolinsk, Tselinograd, Akmola, and Nur-Sultan. I believe this is the second time that it has been named Astana.

    • @TheZauer
      @TheZauer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

For anyone curious, the bloke's name is right there on the building. That's Sun Yat-sen, the first leader of the Kuomintang, the nationalist party that fought the communist party in the Chinese Civil War under his much more infamous and brutal successor, Chiang Kai-shek. The KMT was defeated on the mainland in 1949 and were exiled to Taiwan, where the modern day "Republic of China" was established. The KMT still exists to this day and is a major political party in Taiwan.
He was also not from Taiwan. He was born in Xiangshan county, which is on the southern coast of mainland China, and died in Beijing before the outbreak of the civil war. But he is considered a national "father figure" in Taiwan. Hence why they got a building dedicated to him with his portrait up top Mao style. There is also a Kuomintang sun symbol (which is also on the Taiwanese flag) visible on the top left of the facade.

People live in poor houses, similar to communal apartments, dormitories of the times of the Soviet Union. All because of the dictatorship. This was great! I've been really enjoying rainbolt's stuff recently but it's no substitution for this style of play that pinpoints where you based on knowledge gained through a genuine interest in the world as opposed to an interest in the meta (these aren't necessarily mutually exclusive, just to be clear!). It's one thing to know you're in Luxembourg because the car is lower down, you're in New Zealand because of its distinctive bollards or you're in Sweden because the small white dashes on the edges of the road, but it's another thing entirely to know you're in Belgium because you cycled through that very town or in Malmo because you recognise a specific interesting building you have some criticisms of. It's good that both styles exist and are appreciated by the community

You can tell that the third one was a soviet country by the giant building next to it. Stalin commissioned 7 giant buildings in Moscow called the seven sisters and they all look like that. Following this, other Eastern Bloc cities then ended up with similar buildings. Warsaw has one, for example.

    • @theArhar

well yes, but actually no in case of Астана, because this building was built in around 2006 and only mimics сталинские высотки

This is a great map! Would love to play along again!
    1. Saw the .be domain right away and the Oostend name on the police car. Figured out the location pretty quickly. 5000 points.
    2. I did not know about the Turning Torso building in Malmo. I was getting a sort of industrial Netherlands vibes, so went for The Hague. 3123 points.
    3. I vaguely remembered the Khan Shatyr building in Kazakhstan the moment I saw it. But spent an unbelievable amount of time searching for the location as I did not realize the compass was wrong! Finally took a punt and guessed a spot 3 km from the actual location. 4990 points.
    4. Easy round. Lots of clues. 5000 points.
    5. This was tricky. I made an assumption that since this is a detective map, the 3 locations mentioned should be simpler to find on the map. I was guessing Ireland, Scotland, Isle of Man or Jersey. Zoomed into Isle of Man on a whim first and found the location straightaway! 5000 points.
Overall 23,113 points. I would say a pretty good score.

4 out of 5 were doable (you need pretty good eyes to pick up Malmö as it is written on a sign rather small and it is rather blurry). However, for the Isle of Man location I simply wasn't bothered to look around for on the map, haha. Pretty good Map nonetheless !

This was so cool for me because it goes full circle. I got interested in Google maps years back when I just clicked around random areas of the globe and was just floored when I came across Astana. Very much a “planned” city, stunning plazas and buildings and structures.. and the colors! I thought it held the record as the coldest capital in the world (although it has extreme variation in temperatures across seasons) but apparently it’s second to Ulaanbaatar. 🤷‍♂️
Anyway it got me more interested in using google maps like an exploratory game and then soon enough of course I found Geoguessr and then “GeoguessrWizard” as he was back then.
Anyways, thanks Astana! And of course, thanks Tom!

hey Tom, great video as always and good job on the 25k! :D usually i'm not good / too impatient on those detective rounds but i got 25k on that one. the rounds were quite doable. btw (though i'm fairly sure you probably are aware and got the same comment already) the compass is always correct when it says Google at the bottom right but if the footage is taken by someone else it can be all over the place and in my experience you shouldn't rely on it. even if the map says "compass always correct" or smtg like that

  • @danthyros

Looks as though a lot of us got 25k on this one; it was one of the easier play-alongs you've done. I also took by far the longest on the 3rd round, but for a different reason: I spotted the Cyrillic and the sun in the north and concluded straight away that the compass was wrong, but somehow it took me 10 or 15 minutes to notice the flag, and then another 10 or so to find the right spot on the map. On the last round I knew right away where we were (mostly from "Castletown") but felt lucky to guess the right intersection on the map. In the 2nd round I did not recognize the building but the city name was indeed visible on one of the street signs.

Another great video Tom, really enjoyed that map. I recognised Astana straight away because I've seen the tent building thing in Spaghetti Road's Kazakhstan video and presumably the Isle of Man location is there because it is a famous part or the Isle of Man TT, you can see on the map that the stretch of road where it was is labelled as 'Ballamoda strait'.

I have a decent idea for you if you wanna do a straight line challenge in the future, but it might be hard to implement
    Basically:
Play a round of geoguessr in any country you find best, and use whatever rules you may need to hinder yourself, or help. Because whichever point you guessed farthest from the correct direction is the one you would walk!
I think it'd be a good twist, and since I think custom rounds can be made, it doesn't have to be complete chance so you can avoid illegal parts. Or make a rule to go along the border of illegal property instead.
If you think it's a good idea let me know in some way! I would love to see it happen

That tunnel in San Francisco has a building with an interesting story at the south entrance. Before there was a tunnel, Stockton Street just went over the hill. To build the tunnel entrance they had to lower the street for the block between Bush and Sutter. There were already buildings standing there and they were left with their old front doors opening into thin air and their basements suddenly at street level.
You can still see one of these today, west side of the street, building that today houses the Palihotel. Obvious old front door (now a window) on the left side of the facade one story up from the street.

I hate not getting the 3rd round. I figured quickly from sun in the north and cyrillic writing that the compass was wrong. I got the flag. But I was so convinced that the water in the background was the sea that I did not even go to Astana. I found a seaside city "Atyrau" of decent size that wasn't too far off, but I knew it was not right... Had I even looked at Astana, then I would have gotten it for sure. I was focused on the river and the bridge + road pattern like you... But Atyrau had a river as well :(

I got the San Francisco one in a about 5 seconds. You could see the transamerican building poking its triangle head just over the top of the buildings when you spawn in. Then it took another minute to get exactly where it was. It helps that I grew up about an 45 min to an Hour or more away from San Francisco.

The capital of Kazakhstan is Astana, has been since 1997. Before that it was Almaty (formerly known as Alma-Ata). But what I think you're thinking of is the name changes. Astana has gone through multiple name changes during the relatively short time it has been the capital, and also couple times before that too. It was known as Akmola when it was founded in 1830 and shortly after that named Akmolinsk when granted its town status. In 1961 under the Soviet rule it was renamed Tselinograd. After the dissolution of Soviet Union the name was then again changed back to Akmola. Shortly after it became the capital in 1997 it was renamed Astana (which literally translates to "Capital city"). In 2019 it was renamed Nur-Sultan after Kazakhstan's first and only president of the time. The last name change happened only a bit over month ago back to Astana, which I wasn't actually aware of until checking my facts today.
