The most accepted theory is that this is the same guy from the born to die era, but just older. She is presented as young because that's how he remembers her because she died young or sth like that. She is everywhere he looks, she haunts him and fills him with regret.

this theory might be true, but I initially thought the old guy was Barrie, song is most likely about him and Lana told he is the strongest guy yet, like she was stronger than all her other men except for him. and how she could 'not break through his world.' she is following him on the streets, swimming being sexy, dancing around him like crazy, but he is cold and don't care, sees right through her.
Wow!! Honestly this song takes on a whole new meaning if you think about it from the perspective of her looking in on him from the afterlife and watching him be unable to get over her.
EDIT: Omg maybe the video begins and ends with him driving alone because that's how he killed her and he's reflecting on how she still haunts him and hearing her voice while he's driving

Dang I really thought he was gonna get this one when he saw the gun symbolism. Lana’s dead in the video and he is her past lover but he’s gotten older and he remembers her as she was when she died. I dont know where the father daughter stuff came from lol.

One of my favorite Lana song's goddamn, and the music video captures the beautiful hopelessness of it. BUT TROPICO. So excited.
She's dead and now her lover is old and keeps seeing her everywhere. The imagery suggests he may have been the one to kill her. Perhaps figuratively? He's the old version of the dude in born to die as can be seen in Westcoast (where she had both the young dude and then this dude playing the older version of him)
The thing is all starts in born to die where she dies and his lover gets old with the pass of the time. On shades of cool the lana we see is a ghost and the old guy it's the born to die guy but older. Maybe he cannot stop thinking about her dead lover because he feels guilty about her death or something.
And in blue jeans the same guy is like scared or idk bc he sees Lana's ghost at the pool

The man from the music videos is called Mark Mahoney, he is actually considered a “living legend” as far as tattoo artists go. Lana said in an interview Mahoney was one of the first people she knew in L.A., and she was very fond of him. I actually believe he tattooed her although I can’t remember which tattoo she said it was. This is probably why she wanted him in her music videos, he’s everything L.A. cool... ‘down on the west coast, they got their icons’.

I really thought you would figure it out lol. There’s a theory that he is the same born to die, blue jeans and west coast guy. In shades of cool he is remembering her, even her bathing suit is almost the same as the white one in blue jeans. That scene where she is swimming and he sees her but later he is alone again, I think that’s what kinda make me figure it out. And also when he is getting in his car and supposedly Lana is walking down the street and he’s looking but there’s no one there actually, and btw the imagery with butterflies and everything she looks transparent almost heavenly, cause she’s dead already. I love her so much and her music means the world to me, I’m latín and sometimes my English it’s not that good so I apologize if I made a mistake in my explanation.
I just realized by another video that helped me realize lol This is a sequel to Born to Die. He's the guy in that video but he's older and imagining her in his home and in his pool. She died in that wreck remember. Now he's old and fantasizing about her. It's genius.

The theory about this video that I've heard most in that I believe applies to it is not that it's an older guy younger woman thing, although we get that alot from Lana. He is older and she was his lover from when they were both younger and she died and now she is haunting him and that's why in the scene where the guitar is playing and they are together he looks a little bit younger.

One thing to consider with the “old guy” thing that she got a lot of critique for, remember the born to do video? Well the young guy in that video is supposed to be the old guy in these videos years on because if you remember she died in the born to die video. If you also notice she is phantom like in the shades of cool video when she’s singing, she’s haunting him and when she’s “physically” there it’s in his head he is reminiscing about her and missing her he sees her everywhere because of the guilt and sadness of her death. The line he calls for me and not for you is symbolic of the fact he misses her his phantom lover and no other woman could fulfil so that’s why he lives in shades of cool and is always blue. Hope this helps it’s just an interpretation! Love these reactions tho x

Saying this video is not strong comparatively, ignores that it is part of a storyline told over the three Ultraviolence Album music videos. If you look at the release dates of the videos, West Coast was released first and tells the story of arriving in California with her young boyfriend yet she gets caught up with her older man. Shades of cool shows how that struggle culminated with her old man shooting and killing her young boyfriend. Ultraviolence is released last and shows her getting married to Jim. Several theories, but this is just mine. There is always more to her videos
