I second that. I'm a retired professional singer, and have sang this many times in shows. I can't begin to explain how hard it is to sing, but John made it look easy. He was an absolute power house. So much more of his music will blow your mind.
It breaks my heart that John Miles did not receive the success he deserved. Apart from Highfly, Music and Slow Down he has otherwise never charted. He is one of the UK's greatest Singer/Songwriters. I have all 14 of his albums and over 50 singles.
R.I.P. Mr. Music. What a talent. When you consider there was basically 1 vocal verse, and he turned that one verse into a song of epic proportions. Incredible. I'm well into my 70's now, not in the best of health, and probably not much longer for this world, and as an ex-musician for most of my life I've left instructions for this to be played on the conclusion of my funeral. Thanks for posting.
There are many live versions of this great song but you must see and hear the live version recorded in 2008 with a live full piece orchestra. It is beyond epic! RIP John Miles On behalf of the planet, Thank you for this masterpiece....
This song means so much to me, my son as a young boy of around 8 taught himself to play this on the keyboards. Now that my son is no longer with us, every time I hear this I have such great memories of him and his love of music. He was able to hear a tune and work it out , and play it.
I started deejaying at a radio station in 1985. We had 45s sent to us every week from a record distributor. One I remember was John Miles - Blinded. The song never charted. But I played the crap out of it cause to me it amazing. If you get a chance, give it a listen even if you don't react to it. Thank me later.
Well done Harri. I've been reccommending all the good guys on here to remind the world of this masterpiece. Such a simple concept, so magnificently produced and performed. R.I.P John Miles.
Think, what you ment about Barry Manilow was "I write the songs". Also a great composition!!! Not that great, on my opinion, but still also love Barry and his music.
John was such a brilliant musician. He was musical director for Tina Turner and Joe Cocker when they toured. Also do not forget the work he did with the Alan Parsons Project
The sessions for the album Rebel, the album this comes from, were the first time a Non-EMI Artist recorded at Abbey Road. The legendary Producer, Alan Parsons, was the studio engineer on Dark Side Of The Moon. So he has an impressive CV!!! He turned a very dark and angry blues song into the immortal (Come Up And See Me) Make Me Smile by Steve Harley And Cockney Rebel. He produced the hits January and Magic for Pilot and many others!!! His work as The Alan Parsons Project and his solo albums are outstanding. Incidentally, the Orchestral arrangement for Music was by Andrew Powell. He has also worked extensively with Alan Parsons.
Check out by him a proper banger called Slow Down. It rocks along and has you tapping and clapping. Strangely,John Miles was much bigger in Germany and the scandy countries than in his homeland,England, still popular and well known but over there,he was huge.
My favourite song of all time! I was 10 when I first heard it and just starting to listen to proper music. The 2012 Night at the proms is probably my favourite live version. John was a session musician too, worked with the legend Tina Turner for a while. Thanks Harry.
I've seen John Miles do this LIVE 14 or 15 times. At "Night of the Proms." Rotterdam, Netherlands. And many more great bands. Such as Toto, Status Q, Paradise by dashboard light. And Land of Hope and Glory, with John Miles.
If you are a music lover, you have to appreciate this production! It is put together well. Kind of make me think of Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die”.
Bought the album, Rebel, at age 16 when it was released. John was also a singer for Alan Parsons Project. Check out "The System Of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether ", which was their first hit..
Man I love you you have a great gift to share the passion for music with others. I enjoy your posts very much. I'm glad I found you. You're so nice and friendly. The world needs positive poeple like you. It really does.
Harry, this is the first time I have seen any of your videos - I found it by searching reaction videos for the song itself. Bless you for your appreciation and insight into the impact of this legendary piece of music.I just love that you stood up and applauded at the end! I bought this as a single way back in 1976 and the time the notable thing was that even though pop singles were mostly created around the commercial and broadcast-friendly template of 3 minutes, DJ's still nearly always played the full single without an early fade out because of the quality of the song. That universally true statement of music being my first love and last and being unable to live without music is a belief that will never die. It may just be the most perfectly conceived and executed pop single of all time, combining elements of pop, rock and classical music so forcefully and beautifully. An Opera indeed , as you say! You should check out the b-side of the single, "Putting My New Song Together", which is also a passionately crafted piece about the agony of creating and finishing a song from the musician's point of view. th-cam.com/video/w6KDTL8tYpA/w-d-xo.html
Yet again where have you been never heard this , i was 17 when first heard this and John miles first tune HIGHFLY ,Music was num,ber 4 in the charts also John miles had an album called ZARAGON which came out in 1978 and that needs to checked out , the era of Saturday Night Fever and Grease and some how it went no where , but to me its a masterpiece , I live in Manchester and last Saturday i came across a young girl who was looking at vinyl and told her to look out for Music by John Miles and a couple of years i got a copy of Rebel on vinyl which has Highfly and Music i can not get Zaragon on CD
I agree totally, always did, music was my first love.......in terms of Alan Parsons, he was the producer, engineer of this song and logically the late John Miles was one of the main singer of the Alan Parsons Project ! BTW this song "Music" was John's only big hit !!
Cool to have the same first name as i have and you can music. John Miles was a big hit for some years here in Sweden and i have kind of forgot about him like many i think. He made great songs. Alan Parsons music always followed me and this sound is his i hear . Parsons was actually involved in EMI studios on early age with Beatles and is actually in that roof top concert video one of them on the roof.
Thank you, this is probably my favourite song. John Miles was one of a large number of musicians with musical education, many of the 60's top bands were staffed by classical musicians turned pop stars so they knew how to craft a song so well and they played the instruments too. Alan Parson is the top music producer, he and Miles collaborated on several projects over the years. Worth listening to Alan Parsons Project and Alan Parsons band, two different iterations with the same person.
Superb track - I was 7 yrs old in '76 and I think the first time I heard it played was on Radio 2. The 1970's was the pinnacle for pop-rock and classical music/orchestral pieces being used within songs. E.L.O took it to new heights but to a certain extent even Disco was perfect for combining modern with classical - Donna Summer's hits produced by Giorgio Moroder being good examples.
Merci for the good information👍, didn't know Alan Parson produced this either. Queen released Bohemian in autumn 1975 against their record label's opposition; Music was apparently released in Central Europe in March 1976. The time for such "unconventional" songs was probably ripe. The musically versatile, but even more "adult" sounding Songs In the Key ... came out in autumn 1976 (I've very seldom heard it in one go); I don't quite see the connection; his three previous albums were musically more experimental (e.g. synthi). For me INNERVISIONS is just awesome: Higher Ground, He's Misstra All-It-Know, especially Living In The City too - a street symphony-, sorry but every song like "Don't Worry About A Thing" and what I write🤨....have a nice Sunday!! !
Hi this is Steven from Montreal Canada I just started watching you and TH-cam you really know your music and I know you love Deep Purple like I do you have to find lazy again but live 1972 and play it please the guitarist to me is the best Ritchie Blackmore and the drummer is the best drummer I think alive today
I guess there is a possibility that Manilow may have sang this live, but you're probably reminded of him singing 'I Write The Songs' - the lyrical theme is similar - a hit for him written by Bruce Johnson of The Beach Boys.
Wish, they would have shown the violins and horns and trumpets at around 5:30. Just marvelous - so many instruments with such beautiful force and strength and harmony.
Hi Harri. Seeing how much you liked this track and who wouldn't..it's just a phenomenal piece of timeless perfection, anyway i thought thought you might like to do a reaction to a track that has a similar timeless feel, Over You by Roxy Music. Curiously no-one has reacted to it yet, pretty sure you'll love it 👍
Is the person that produced it the same Alan Parson from the Alan Parson's Project? If so, this maybe the reason that it sounds like it does. Regardless, I love it. It is a masterpiece.
Also was Tina Turner's guitarist for his last 10 years or more of his life.. Check out their rendition of "Try a Little Tenderness ", the Live version.. it is emotionally intense.
Barry didn't sing *Music* . John Miles is the original singer/songwriter of this masterpiece. There's a Manilow fan who made a tribute to him with the John Miles version.

Best song ever in the history of man 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I second that.

On behalf of the planet,
Thank you for this masterpiece....
Well said !!!
I have the lyrics tattooed on the inside of my right arm...it is my all-time favourite song!!!
You really need to watch the live version Harri. He performed it live at the Night of the Proms for many years. 2001 & 2006 are good choices.
The song you were thinking of was "I Write The Songs" by Barry Manilow
John Miles was one of the best. He was also part of the Alan Parson Project. Cast of Amontilado is amazing
I was just thinking it reminds me of Alan Parsons, I never noticed before.
I agree, without music where would we be, great reaction
He did a great live version in 2001 at the BBC Proms. Proving he's still got it after many years.
I watched that also, it was a stunning performance.
Anyone who loves music should be introduced to this masterpiece...
Totally agree. The live version is excellent.
My favuorite song of all time. I still shut my eyes when listening and imagine I'm an ice skater dancing along to it. Great song to escape to.
One of the best one-hit wonders of all time. Thanks Stephen & Harri.
Actually, not his biggest "hit" in the U.S. "Highfly " made the Top 40, and his highest charter was called "Slowdown"..
No,had another one called Slow Down, which was even better imo.
The 70’s is King of all decades, with the 60’s only just behind.
Magical.
I saw him in 77 . A great concert but he blew me away with this live
This song is so epic, man. I feel exactly this about music, it's impossible to live without it.
A STANDARD....A CLASSIC...A MASTERPIECE....🎼🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎹🎹🎙🎼🎵🎶💎💎💎💎☀️☀️☀️
This song means so much to me, my son as a young boy of around 8 taught himself to play this on the keyboards.
Now that my son is no longer with us, every time I hear this I have such great memories of him and his love of music. He was able to hear a tune and work it out , and play it.
Gerard, your son is not with us anymore but i believe he is with God.
This song always brings tears to my eyes - just way too beautiful.
This song just suddenly popped into my head, and it took me a while to remember the artist's name. A really powerful classic.
I think he passed away not long ago, and he played in Tina Turner's band when she was on tour.
Its a first class production ❤❤❤ sadly we lost him in Dec 2021 aged 72 😢
💔
A real classic, such a masterpiece, beautiful real music! I was about 20 years old, when this record came out. 🎶🎶🎶🎶❤️❤️👍
John Miles is not a one hit wonder! Anything from his rebel album is fire.
A few more than 1 in the UK including Slowdown and Highfly . You may ike to check them out John my friend
"You Have It All" is one of my favorites, and a lot of people like "When You Lose Someone So Young", which will have you shedding a few tears..
I've never heard Barry Manilow cover this. However, he did love this song and "I Write The Songs" was heavily influenced by Music.
Well done Harri. I've been reccommending all the good guys on here to remind the world of this masterpiece. Such a simple concept, so magnificently produced and performed. R.I.P John Miles.
Another song of his was called '' High Fly '' ❤❤❤
Think, what you ment about Barry Manilow was "I write the songs". Also a great composition!!! Not that great, on my opinion, but still also love Barry and his music.
John was such a brilliant musician. He was musical director for Tina Turner and Joe Cocker when they toured. Also do not forget the work he did with the Alan Parsons Project
It was John Miles who wrote this song . He said it took him about half an hour to compose it.
Incredible singer and musician!❤
Wait what! You did not know about this huge song? This is one of pop music’s not to be missed all time classics.
Thanks Harri. I had a feeling you would like this one. I think Johm Ln Miles wrote the song t8r his self penned firstb album.Rebel
Thank you for posting this masterpiece...❤
Awesome! The whole album ‘Rebel’ this song came from is fantastic!
You picked a great one Stephen. This is an amazing performance. Good detective work from Harri. 🌺✌️
You have to see this with a big orchestra, live!
Gloriously over the top.😁
The sessions for the album Rebel, the album this comes from, were the first time a Non-EMI Artist recorded at Abbey Road. A timeless masterpiece, John was a great songwriter and musician, thankyou for another insightful reaction Harri
One hit wonder suggests a hit, then disappears!! John made quite a few albums, and corker songs on the albums!!
Check out by him a proper banger called Slow Down.
It rocks along and has you tapping and clapping.
Strangely,John Miles was much bigger in Germany and the scandy countries than in his homeland,England, still popular and well known but over there,he was huge.
Fantastic! Always!
My favourite song of all time! I was 10 when I first heard it and just starting to listen to proper music. The 2012 Night at the proms is probably my favourite live version.
John was a session musician too, worked with the legend Tina Turner for a while.
Thanks Harry.
That proms version with the full orchestra is brilliant.
That and the flash mob version in Germany
I've seen John Miles do this LIVE 14 or 15 times. At "Night of the Proms." Rotterdam, Netherlands. And many more great bands. Such as Toto, Status Q, Paradise by dashboard light. And Land of Hope and Glory, with John Miles.

A world class music masterpiece by highly underrated singer songwriter musician than the credit the late John Miles - deserves, R.I.P!
Bought the album, Rebel, at age 16 when it was released. John was also a singer for Alan Parsons Project. Check out "The System Of Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether ", which was their first hit..
This epitomises me. Music is my first love, and I'll be my last
Man I love you you have a great gift to share the passion for music with others. I enjoy your posts very much. I'm glad I found you. You're so nice and friendly. The world needs positive poeple like you. It really does.
This is a timeless classic, and got me into music aged 10. Thank you for the reaction video.
No 80's?

This was my exam revision music at school! ❤❤
Excellent song.
Anyone else remember Blake's 7?
The composer of the Blake's 7 has admitted to being heavily influenced by it.
Dude how could you not know that song? I'm a French dude born in the late 80's and I've known it all my life. :D
Awesome reaction regardless though.

Also backed Tina Turner on tour as guitarist
my aunt lived in the same house that Nigel Benn was born in well mb conceived
SQ - This was an outstanding live version (there are others) choice for submission, especially from John Miles. RIP

The Magnum Opus of a golden god. A song within a song within a song.

John Miles was an ex member of The Alan Parsons Project...ciao...
You should check out his 2012 live version at Night of the Proms. The light show alone is breathtaking, but his performance is beyond spectacular.
A movie soundtrack !!!
never mind the crap you hear John miles was brilliant
Is the person that produced it the same Alan Parson from the Alan Parson's Project? If so, this maybe the reason that it sounds like it does. Regardless, I love it. It is a masterpiece.
Yes, John sang quite a few songs for Alan Parsons Project..
Alan Parsons produced this, sad he died too young. He used to be stage manager for Tina Turner as well
I think it's a different song to Barry's his song was called 'I write the songs.' I don't think he sang music
in Allan Parsons project also
He also appeared on Jimmy Page's 1988 album Outrider. " Wasting My Time" &
'Wanna Make Love "
Also was Tina Turner's guitarist for his last 10 years or more of his life.. Check out their rendition of "Try a Little Tenderness ", the Live version.. it is emotionally intense.
If you like this then try listening to the Moody Blues "Tuesday Afternoon" 😊
Great song ! But did so much more.check out nice man Jack. Really really clever take on Jack the ripper.
Barry didn't sing *Music* . John Miles is the original singer/songwriter of this masterpiece. There's a Manilow fan who made a tribute to him with the John Miles version.
is that a harpsichord I hear?
Indeed it is!!!
Barry Manilow did "I'll write the songs" not anywhere near as good as this gem.
If you think this is good watch the 2001 proms version.
What a waste...the song was too big for John Miles...
He basically shouted the song and ended the song on a low pitch as the key was way too high for him to end it on a high note.
The song needed a high note finish and he ruined it with a flat pitch.
