Born in 1935 he, Maurice Murphy and John Berryman must've been aware of each other in banding circles and probably bumped into each other at contests. Although I never heard them I read somewhere that that Norman Ashcroft and Ted Gray of that era were also fine. cornetists.

Surely Derek is a legend. A wonderful player and principal. Privileged to have heard him play at the top of his game.
Loved to go and listen to Derek playing his solos with the CWS band on a Saturday evening at the Embankment Gardens. Great cornetist.
I have always considered Derek Garside to be in the top 5 cornet players of all time. He is my personal favourite.
Derek is a legend. Best l ever heard play this was Roger Webster on a radio recording.

I was born in 1952,I seem to remember jim shepherd was more prominent in my youth although derek was just as good.
