One thing to remember is that a lot of Insomnia's feel comes from the fact that Sister Bliss played it in by hand, thus giving very subtle and human variation of velocity and note length.
Only recently found your channel, and for someone who's been struggling to ctually get sounds out of my head into a synth, your vids have been invaluable. Cheers from Texas
@@EDMTips Thanks for putting them out! And now, I'm not saying you should do the lead from Advanced by Marcell Woods...but you should totally do the Advanced lead from Marcell Woods 👀
I don't know if I get more pleasure out of applying what I learn in these videos... Or sharing in Will's emotional response to the iconic and nostalgic sounds from times gone by!
We need more of those last two, classic trance all the way. Have a happy and safe Christmas, thank you for keeping me sane in lockdown these last couple of years. All the very best, Gary
I'm Russian and I don't speak English well, but you show the process very well and it's clear to me. I have been watching your channel for a long time and I like it, I learn a lot from you! Respect🙌🔝🔝🔝
Thanks! It's all about breaking down your analysis into 3 or 4 constituent characteristics. If you take the time to write in the correct notes first, it takes pitch out of the equation, which simplifies things further
Oh yes sir!definately reminds me of the old days.I used good old octamed on an amiga computer.a whole 1.44mb of floppy disk space!then propellerheads rebirth with cubasis!been listening to me old 90s tapes for inspiration now.cheers
From what I can remember, Faithless used a string pizzicato sound for that riff. Probably layered though? Either way, you did a great job with them all. Impressive.
@@EDMTips Yeah he's right... Ever worked with ANA2? (new to your channel) Love to see some video about Aphex Twins sounds (they were quite pioneers right?)
True. Faitless used a rompler, the Roland JD990 with the famous Pizzcato based on strings You can find the same patch on few Roland rompler, D-50, serie JV/XV/JD, even on the Jupiter X.XM Enya use the same patch as well
Born Slippy is such an iconic lead sound. Your demo of the naked pad reminded me of how in their live shows, Rick would often vary the oscillator mix or the sustain for instance, opening it up toward the end of the track.
Very nice and I really liked the A&B patch, which i have tried to re-create... Two questions, first, I am using FL Studio 20, not Ableton, do you have any suggestions for doing the reverb sidechain if you are familiar with FL (no worries if not) and second, just wondering, noticed a key diff in what you had there with what is recorded (believe D Major for what is on Spotify of the actual song) and wondered if this was because you get flagged for being too close to the original if same key. Keep up the channel and thanks for doing these!
Will can you show us some more about the moxing process and uasking clashing frequencies please mate 🙏. Using Ozone pro is there a equivalent plugin in max for life ?
Your tutorials are best bro! I have learnt alot. Please show us how to make music like "Talamanca" , "James Wood" , "Vitodito" , "Alex H" . They make similar music. 💯⚘
That's great work, but there's so many more - I'd like to hear you do the synth on 'Mind Sensation' - the electric one about 2:20 in. Also the synth in the begining of 'Sometimes I feel - Avicii's Out Miami Mix'. 'Zero 76', 'Conscindo' and 'Flashback - Gregori Klosman' aren't those pretty cool too? The same chord in the beginning of 'One Last Ride - Tommy Trash'. 'Gecko (Overdrive)' is also quite characteristic. ''Plenitudo', 'Mastic' and 'Leather' is maybe less known but cool in their way - there's a lot of EPIC sound out there!
Following this video brought me to the idea of making my own version of "Adagio For Strings" because Tiesto's version is not my cup of coffee. So, I tried my very best in the free online DAW "BandLab". And I am really proud of the version. It's more atmospheric, more melodic. Nevertheless, I cannot release it due to licensing. But I had big fun working on the track. And the cause for this is the "Aha effect" that came with your video.
You can release it, of course. If you recreated it from scratch and not using samples, release it as a cover version with full credits to the composer.
@@level16gmbh83 Well, unfortunately not. The rights owner want me to pay a 3 digit amount so I can release it without payment chance and und this clause and that permission. No, simply no.
good stuff... but after watching i think you make it clear it’s all about the MIDI programming.. Other than that all patches are the same... unison, filter envelope, delay, verb and maybe a bit of distortion... the sound design part is quite easy compared to the composition side of things. Perhaps in a next tutorial should explain how you wrote the midi and why it makes sense and how it interacts with the rest of the track!
On that first patch if the sustain is all the way up it won't do anything if you turn down the decay. So basically you didn't change anything by doing that.
Hello Will, big fan of yours.i wanted to ask you,if you would not bother to make a tutorial (or a paid private lession) about a lead sound i love very much.i am taking about the lead in v.f.m styles track haram.similar ones you find by producers like zwirek.are you able to recreate lead in that field?greetings

In the Above and Beyond example you can use an envelope to duck the reverb directly instead of using additional external processing.
tinlicker - sleepwalker and how they variate the stuff in the song
Great sound design in the video!
Suggestion: 4 great fat leads in the Wavetable synth in Ableton Live. From well-known songs.
if you could recreate the lead in the old '90s song "what is love" by Haddaway you would be legendary forever.
Hello Will, long time purveyor first time commentor. Where can we request "How to sound like" Subjects?
Got goosebumps from that born slippy lead
One thing to remember is that a lot of Insomnia's feel comes from the fact that Sister Bliss played it in by hand, thus giving very subtle and human variation of velocity and note length.
Insomnia was a Pizzicato string sound from a Roland JV Sound Modul, I believe.
the reverse effect on that above and beyond lead is killerrrrr, thank you 🙏

Insomnia PLK is just a preset from JV2080 Factory. And its a perfect sound, redoing it on any other Synth will just do it no justice.
I thought it was off the JP-8000. But yeah all the classic Roland supersaw synths have some kind of preset like that

I have Serum I use it in Cubase. It's endless what you can do with that synth.
Yeah, it's really good. The flow is easy to understand which counts for a lot

No wonder synth so heavy on processors. It's all because of so many layering, and plug-ins working all together.

What's your recommended third party plugin for that pitch drop effect in Avicii?
Didn't faithless simply use a preset from the JV-1080 module?
How come you use compressor after reverb and day?
