this is how most places see preventative maitenance: "everything is working fine, what are we paying you for?" "this thing broke, what are we paying you for?"
Wow, that's the first time, watching your videos, that I've seen a failure this bad/catastrophic. I could definitely imagine how incredibly loud that'd be.
I had a similar situation that you had on the MUA. Mine was a Carrier Humidimiser. The blower section grenaded itself. I had to get it back up and running ASAP. They were loosing $25k per hour of down time. I used unistrut and a new bearing with 4 mounting holes and was able to get the shaft and blower centered in the destroyed spider bracket. Put a rush delivery on the new parts. Cost them $5k to get it back to factory.
Man, that had to have sounded like the world was ending before the belts finally came completely off and things stopped moving. My maintenance guys would have freaked and literally called 911 before calling me...
That one missing bolt bit hit close to home. Had a 00 Grand Prix that needed a transmission. There was 1 bolt that went between the transmission and engine that didn't go back in. Took like 3ft of extensions to get that soab out even. Lol
It’s important to remember. Everyone is the way they are because of something or someone that happened in their lives. Its NOT personal. Some of the best advice I’ve been given is to treat every upset customer as if they’ve got terminal cancer. It sounds ridiculous but it works.
We get the same thing in PVC corrugated conduit in vehicles, the ridges rub into the wires, exposes the conductor, then often moisture gets into the conduit at junctions and connectors and the wires corrode away out of sight to the point they fail.
The odd screw bucket - sometimes spare parts comes with extra screws that are only used on some cars for the same spare part. And of cars - if you have a friend with an older Subaru - connect the two green connectors in the passenger footwell and see what they say when they try to use the car the next time.
@@dashcamandy2242 apparently around mid 00's applies not sure when it actually started or if it has ended. this will potentially put the car into a diagnosis mode where the car will run like crap and the CEL will either light or blink. i say potentially because some models have a plug under drivers side and both need to be connected, although the driver side is apparently usually harder to get to and therefore less likely to be unplugged if it has ever been connected before. did a liitle bit of interweb researching for anyone too busy/lazy/ uninterested to dig themselves.
I worked at a college for 14 years and hundreds of motors were connected with that flex conduit. Place was over 30 years old. I never found a shorted wire in the flex conduit....but poor assembly had connector ends loose.
In the future, you might want to call the motor shop and ask them how slammed they currently are and then decide if it would be faster to drop it off or rebuild it yourself...
Hahahah I was looking at an epic failure on an unmaintained 1991 dry-a-tron today. Blower was still good but if the motor packs it we'll be cutting it out with a grinder.
mmm i love me a good catastrophic failure :) interesting note about the mc cable. I'll have to make a note of that. Not good for heavy vibration environment. That's something I can teach my kids during motor controls.
Great video Chris. I was just wondering if you should be worried about the direct flame/heat hitting that liquid tight and melting it. Up in the North we would be running in mid to high fire more than you would. Just curious.
The factories like to save money, what was installed was 3/8” flex which is too small for the wires that were inserted. MC or what used to be BX cable only came with solid wire which should not be installed in units that vibrate which causes hardening of the copper and breaks causing shorts.
I use MX conduit to keep mice from chewing my fridge mains line up. Also I figured AMPS would be higher under lower air pressure load since it’s pulling more on the motor. But learn something new everyday.
Great video. I'd be curious to know how much the rebuild shop charged you versus how much the factory would have charged you for replacing the motor and assembly? I guess that being down for about 3 weeks like you said for the service call to be wrapped up, was shipping a factor for your decision to go with the rebuilding this time versus ordering new?
Rebuild shop? I rebuild those myself, and I don't tension the belts by the book, because this is the failure that happens when they are "correctly" tensioned. These machines are not built to withstand the tensions specified by the belt manufactures. RTU's and MUA units that are under 15 tons of cooling fall into that category. A 50 ton Intellipak? Yep, tension away.
Great point and I will discuss this on my livestream this evening 02/07/22 @ 5:PM (pacific) on TH-cam come over and check it out th-cam.com/video/sE9dg71dJbA/w-d-xo.html
According to the guys who fixed it that's more or less what happened to a package unit in my last apartment. I didn't get to see inside it, but when they opened it the tech remarked "Holy S*@t! It looks like a bomb went off in here!" Dunno if the blower or compressor went first but whichever it was apparently took out the other. Needless to say the entire unit got replaced. Pretty sure shrapnel hit the evaporator and other internals too.
That looks like old steel BX and I think they fixed that digging in on new aluminum BX cable the older stuff was more tooled for cloth cable not soft plastic
Question. If you use a vendor, i.e. motor shop, to get a part serviced, do you tack your multiplier for that as well? Or does the customer just pay for the cost of the vendor?
Yes I still markup the rebuild, you gotta realize that yes I am having someone else do the work for me, but I still take responsibility and will warranty the work , and I am financing the customer for anywhere from 30-90 days before they issue my payment. So I gotta be able to profit off that
@HVACR VIDEOS That makes sense. I don't charge people money and was curious. Plus, without the connection, they would pay you your hourly wage as well. That gets expensive quickly. Even saves the customer money in a lot of ways. Thanks for the response bro!

You're not putting the mua under building pressure when you close the panel because there's no return and the supply is already sealed. On those gas fired muas the burner plate and the hole it pulls the air through is made to be at right about 0.6inwc of pressure differential, restricting the air flow and causing the lower amp draw. There's usually plates that can be adjusted or sometines its just plates with springs or a damper that will keep that 0.6 inwc
The infrastructure is there so with our high cost of electricity we have always steered clear of heatpumps. But lately they are starting ro change over too them
Customers are great at reporting problems. I have received emails simply saying "It's not working", without telling me what isn't working. Then after asking for more details I am getting "It is completely fucked, not doing anything"... 2½ hour drive later, turns out it is doing a lot of things, but they put a wrong number into the software I made, so it didn't do what they needed it to do... 2½ hour drive home again, after spending just a few minutes there....
W0wza, call the local physics department, that's evidence of a localized Big Bang :P Seriously, tho, a request if I may, along vaguely similar lines -- nearly every time you service a compressor / etc I hear you say "please don't go bang". That has me morbidly curious: what's it look like when one DOES go bang? I'd like to see a video of that. (Silly me.)
All that carnage did not develop overnight. It looks like poor maintenance habits on the part of the customer. I see this in cars too. People don't do any maintenance until the car needs a tow. Oh yeah, that motor oil is still good for another 5k miles. Nope!
Why do you guys in the states don't use real cables like YSLY-J Ölflex like we use in the industry in Europe? these single conduits in the pipe is really not the best solution...
Not being a smart ass but why didn't you put 2 and 2 together and look at the supply registers and ask what area the smoke was billowing out from? If the kitchen says in the area around the ovens and stoves you should be able to know
They didn't give a concrete explanation of what happened, they said the fan just stopped so I started at the fans, from the moment I walked in the door to the moment I found the makeup air unit was about 15 minutes so its not like time was really wasted any time
2 - 3 weeks or more between breakdown and reassemble....yeah pictures, videos, diagrams on cardboard and labeled terminals and parts....early onset Alzheimers is real!

Running the screw in . Grandpa showed me that when I was 12 I do it every time.
Are you talking about the part where he was running the set Allen screw in and out?
I was not expecting that MAU to be blown apart like that 😂 wow! As usual, big picture comes through for the win!

Good job Chris.
With that carnage it should have been making quite a bit of noise before that final crash. 😂
