that last silent image of earth at the end was amazing. The concept that we as a species were so stubborn to accept reality that we basically doomed ourselves because we couldn't see the bigger picture is horrifyingly human. Good job holy shit
I saw it as kinda stupid, I'm pretty sure that being aware of what happened to aliens would shock up most governments right now. Also the NASA would never be allowed to hide this kinda of stuff from the government.
Oh boy, I can't wait to see what Scott has to say about my favorite Analog Horror (White Stag). I sure hope he doesn't use harsh but fair criticisms to break my heart EDIT: Oh thank god
The aesthetics of each series' discussion intro with the tapes and all the board decorations and costuming AND THEN MORE OF YOUR OWN awesome contributions to the genre. I love that you don't just watch analog horror, you bask in it.
i played The Oldest View for my parents, they're are both in their 60s and very reluctant to watch anything that isn't on cable TV. it's officially their favorite horror movie ever, they LOVED it and won't stop telling their friends about it

thank you so much for covering sins of the past!! im very very glad you enjoyed it and your comparision to the amazing world of gumball means the world to me haha
fun fact about the boiled one phenomenon btw, the boiled one himself is canonically meant to symbolize a ww1 soldier named mutsuhiro watanabe who did some horrible shit to POWs when that war was going on, and part of the reason the series was connected to him was because the story affected doctor nowhere so much that he wanted to permanently taint mutsuhiro's image and turn him into 'that spooky red guy from the youtube horror' and i think that's so goddamn based
GOD, that analog horror segment at the end kicked so much ass. You seriously have the chops for some great story telling! I'm begging you, please make more like that. I love existential dread in horror, especially before an election LMAO
It's also fits Scott's theming, it's like one of the only times he's done something space related. But also it's such a different kind of horror. No demons, monsters, eldritch horrors, aliens, or anything like that. Just the existential dread of learning that we are doomed, and there is nothing to do about it.
My only gripe with it was not being able to fully suspend my disbelief for how voyager 3 was able to know so much about the other planets. Having the story take place in a similar reality to ours while the plot is reliant unexplained impossible technology just kept me from enjoying it fully. It’s a great piece of analog horror, but a bit of research into how such satellites work would have helped immensely.
Ranger Craig is THE GOAT! He walks in the room, everybody is sitting THEIR ASSES DOWN! He doesn’t mean business, he IS the business! Love Ranger Craig! I better not see ANY shit from anyone about him!
In the half hearted defense of the 'Backrooms were scarier before monsters' take, I think people are just more talking about the version that...lets be real kinda reads like a lesser SCP: multiple types of monsters, levels, factions and concepts explained to such a minute detail it stops feeling like a look into another world and more like a detailed guide for a videogame that doesn't exist. Monsters might have always been part of the equation, but the STALKER ahh faction system and the simulatenously unknowable yet extensively cathalogued cryptids there sure aren't.
also "there's something else down there with you" is enough, you don't need to see the monster, there doesn't need to be a bunch of types of monsters, just knowing there is a monster, with no other context, is scary
@@GregariousBant yeah it essentially weaponises your own mind against you in that kinda sense, leaving you to fill in the blanks as to what the hell could possibly be lurking there with you, and nothing against the detailed descriptions of monsters and levels and stuff, but I just love how ambiguous the OG was
Agreed but I think it genuinely is the most retarded addition to an already spooky subject Sagan hawked video on it is funny to me he did a good job but half the stuff he talks about and tries to make scary just dosent work I get wanting to be apart of a community and adding lore to something unknown sounds fun but it dosent always work but not everything needs to be explained knowing everything about something takes away from it and that community is really hellbent on making it goofy asl
I just in general disagree with the absolute disrespect to creators who have contributed to the backrooms. Just because Kane created something good doesn't mean that everything else doesn't have it's place or doesn't deserve respect. So many people just absolutely shit on what other people have made in some convoluted way to try and praise Kane. It's gross and unnecessary. You don't like it, that's okay, (not you in particular just to clarify) just don't participate. Let people have their fun. I genuinely appreciate this being brought up in the video because it has drastically decreased my ability to enjoy Kane's series knowing how people are weaponizing it to attack others. So much vitriol.
@@demetriam2408 people are allowed to criticize the things you like, and if that affects your enjoyment that says more about you and the work than the people making criticisms
CHEZZKIDS WAHOO!!! Your criticisms are completely fair and I myself also had trouble discerning the story. One thing I have to note since I'm not sure from your commentary if you stumbled upon it, but chezzkids isn't limited to its youtube channel. It has its own rabbithole website and an Instagram account with reuploads of some of the youtube stuff in higher (legible) quality! PatRatrick has a really good video exploring the general story so far :]
1:14 I told my mom that without context and she found it funny. She found it funny also when I gave her context. I love my mom, thanks for actually engaging with my hyperfixations
I'm sitting here realizing I should have recommended "The Hotdog Archives" to you. Not a horror series, but damn is it a good comedy series that plays off people knowing general tropes of Analog Horror series.
I spent almost the whole stream in that Lenny meme pose with the fingers Hahaha, I'm glad you liked Valle Verde, I promise the whole thing will make more sense in the future, if you are curious about the lore behind the THbrain and its functionalities, there is a document written by one of the investigators in my community tab. (Also I might be stealing that swiming quote)
Okay, followup comment now that I'm done the ranking section of the video! In regards to your comment about the Mario 64 Personalization thing with Classified, I really really recommend playing B3313. It's a very, *very* extensive rom hack for Super Mario 64 that goes full ham on the idea of the beta versions of the game being utterly fucked. Even references Classified at a lot of points. I wouldn't recommend actually completing the game as it's so *much* and that's not the point. It's best just wandering about the labyrinthine and genuinely impressive castle dreamscape as if you were playing something like LSD Dream Emulator, or a Mario version of Yume Nikki. The vibes are immaculate.
Less related to any analog horror shenanigans and just a cool chill horror game with a bit of silliness to it, Voices of the Void is also worth checking out. It's an open world game where you analyze signals from deep space in the most garbage filled shack ever, suffer fucked up horrific random events, and find goofy shit in the Swiss woods.
AGREED! Honestly, I never really found B3313 scary, I always enjoyed it in the sense that it really felt like I was playing Super Mario 64 for the first time again, taking that confusing yet whimsical experience of playing through a game like SM64 when video games were still a relatively new concept to me and bringing it forward in time for me to experience again in a fresh new way. I've never played any other game quite like it. Also, playing it on a real CRT and real N64 controller is an absolute vibe. If you have the stuff to do that, I would highly recommend giving that a shot.
'Should I stream Shipwreck 64 .... and cry?' uh yes pls. We crave human suffering. Also, the plot of your analogue horror reminded me of a storyline of a game I just played (won't say which because spoilers), but the messenger was sent out to see if there was life outside of our own world, but she found the truth and drove herself mad trying not to tell her creator this truth. He finds out eventually, he goes mad, and this madness spiral of both characters spans literal millennia and almost causes the end of life as we knew it :) good times, but a slightly weird tangent for the game.
@@spidey5558 the game is final fantasy 14. EDIT: originally i put a rant here but i dont have the energy, gatekeeping the name of the game you just spoiled is a jerk move.
What's funny about Dreams of an Insomniac to me is that the first time I heard Pastra's voice was when they did a presentation about Jeff the Killer in the Quinnamon vod where they read and talked about creepypastas.
Seeing Valle Verde here was not only such a surprise, but a very welcome one! This series deserves so much more attention than it actually has gotten, Alluvium put so much work and effort in it and it SHOWS. I definately agree that the story is very difficult to decipher, however with the references to argentinian history and culture i feel like the story building up behind the scenes is going to be really impactful. As a fan and an argentinian, thank you for reviewing it!
I'm so glad you made another analog horror ranking video because a lot of the series like the Oldest View, The Boiled One Phenomenon, _Boisvert, and Mario 64 Classified are genuinely too great for them not to be talked about, and even stuff that are still flawed and rough around the edges like Tryred Witness Archives and Needlemouse VHS are still enjoyable to watch and discuss.
Pastra is an amazing horror writer, istg if you havent listened to his Jeff the Killer rewrite you totally should, he completly transforms the story into something truly amazing.
Your analogue horror submission just makes me feel an immense amount of dread (in a good way!), it's something I can definitely see happening in real life, so out of touch yet so real, marvelous work!
All I can say is it was so good I never want to watch it again or think of it again because of how disgusting it made me feel, the hopelessness of selfishness unraveling into our imminent collapse on society as a whole
I think the main difference between the original Backrooms greentext and a lot of fan interpretations is that the focus is shifted. The original focused a lot more on the dread of being trapped there with the mention that you might not be alone. It's 95% trapped 5% monster. It was vague enough that you could easily see it as you would starve to death before you get out or get killed. Most other things you find is 95% monster 5% trapped. For a lot of interpretations (ESPECIALLY video games) it has just become an easy setting to put scary monsters.
Your point about the Boiled One Phenomenon is frustratingly true. I basically wrote the series off because my first exposure to it was niche shitposts from terminally-online subreddits. When I found the actual video I just couldn't take it seriously, and that honestly sucks.
Still watching the video (loving it so far) but I wanna put this here before I forget to: If you ever plan on doing another one of these, PLEASE consider including the Lacey Games series by the artist Ghost Tundra, it is without a doubt my personal favorite Analog/Digital Horror series and I would love for it to get some more love and it'd be sick to hear your thoughts on it!
Great stream! I'm so glad you gave stuff like Boisvert and Valle Verde high ratings, because they definitely deserve it. Regarding your own attempt at AH...eh, it was alright, as someone who likes cosmology horror. I'm not really too into the ending though, since stories revolving around humanity being assholes that'll drive us into extinction have completely exhausted me. Plus the ending is way too abrupt to be impactful...definitely needed another scene or two.
Ok, real comment now Scott, this whole series is wonderful, and I love that it shows a lot of analog horrors maybe people haven't heard of. Really hope you keep this series going.
If you do end up making a Part 3, I wonder if you'd be willing to look back at older internet horror series like Marble Hornets and Ben Drowned. I'd be interested to see how they stack up against today's stuff. Also Lacey's Games, please that one needs more eyes on it.
Hey I got your mention thanks! :) Ps for the ones who don't know I reuploaded the Needlemouse series And pps: i also reuploaded season 2 so it will make since for Scott to see and if you're planning on making another analog horror video you are gonna love Needlemouse season 2
Alright, I actually had to pause another video to come back here and just say that I love this video, I love your newer, post-creepypasta-narration videos. I don't know if this information is at all useful, but, still. S-tier.
spaceman i dont see enough ppl talking about it but i was dialed the FUCK in for your cosmic horror. it feels SO reminiscent of early mandela catalogue I LOVED IT AND WE NEED MORE.
WAAAHHHH THE BOILED ONE SPOTTED I LOVE DR. SILAS ORION NOWHERE the paper souls shout out was absolutely the best thing you could have done, I REALLY love dr nowhere and his art it's amazing in concept and in intention, he's a great artist
I'm so happy you covered Dog Nightmares. It's been my favorite analog horror for some time and really hit me at the right time. I found it only a week after my dog of about ten years passed away and the entire thing felt like a unique, almost unsettling love letter to a lost pet and it, despite being really unsettling and spooky (just as you described!), it was a comforting watch to see or feel the character go through a similar feeling as to what I felt. It stuck with me hard. I'm so excited to see more of it and I love that you're also a fan of it-- it's SUCH a good and spooky series with so much talent in it.
Thanks man! Listening to horror stuff is how I usually fall asleep. And after just finishing your previous ranking video yesterday. This one came in clutch.
Oh I loved that’d ending piece you made!! Such a scary idea of something that kills planets. But almost worse is how the investigator is like, making the scientist feel bad for not telling this information earlier. Then flipping to keep it classified ! What a good feae!

Oh wow, your new analog horror at the end is basically just what Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker’s ending might have looked like. Very well done, well written and well performed!
Thank you so much for how you end these vids. I am genuinely in love with the example in this video, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BUILD OFF IT I LOVE HORROR INTHE COSMOS
i wish there were more comments discussing your original video and idea, i found it SO SO fascinating! the voice acting was done incredibly well and theme of space exploration really hooked me, i would be so interested in seeing more you could do with this concept!! great work and thank you for the amazing videos!
I'm honestly surprised there wasn't any of the Adult Swim infomercials, like This House has People In It or Unedited Footage Of A Bear. Or that one series about the bumper cards from the early 2000s
I played Shipwrecked 64 at your recommendation, and I gotta say, I agree with a lot of your take - my only addendum is you underestimate how tedious it is LMAO You think it's bad as far as you got, hoo boy, the plaza level is some of the worst tedium I've ever endured in a horror game. That said, it was still worth playing and has a lot of cool stuff going on - great video, thanks for all the good content Scott!
That final ARG you made was amazing, Scott! It really reminded me of the toning of Godzilla, with a hearty helping of interstellar mixed on top. seriously underrated channel
I wonder if anyone will have a line that beats his “You’re going in the spider contraption” one from his last analog horror video. That phrase has permanently entered my vocabulary.
I cheered when you put SM64: CLASSIFIED in S-Tier, as it’s my favorite Analog Horror series. Especially as someone who’s a big fan of Mario, I can definitely say that it was certainly effective, right through to the very satisfying finale! That was the best moment of this video for me. (I will admit it’s not perfect, but hey, it’s Mario 64 except it has a scene of Luigi drowning and reference to Stanley the Bugman!)
@@demetriam2408 "Yeah let me explain why an horror concept about being isolated to the point of being outside of normal reality isn't affected by having HUMAN FACTIONS WITH THEIR OWN AGENDA THRIVING INSIDE OF IT". Jesus Christ, you couldn't tell the moon from a large rock even if one hit you in the face.
The titanic reveal is even better because in the series lore it was said to have been scrapped and also it has the upgrades the Olympic recived later in its service after the real life titanic sank, including new name letters and more lifeboats, also its promenade deck seems to be open instead of closed. My inner ship nerd that has not been released since i was 7 has been released.
22:36 when i first watched the oldest view i genuinely thought that kane walked around an abandoned mall and just edited the guy in really well. im floored as to how real it looked now that i now everything was made in blender
That section at the end was awesome! I think that you really have some incredible ideas to both be compelling on their own but also genre subversive. That definitely was. And the horror landed perfectly with the acting. I'm very impressed!
One anthology series that I quite enjoy, although it is very small and not well known, is maple 9 from the same guy who’s making the new portal underground series.
Underrated analogue horror idea would be a therapist (like the "why tf is your imaginary friend split in half") desling with one or multiple people all desling with their own analogue horror issues that slowly but surely start to overlap (or like a police investigator, school councilor, etc.)
I mean, the idea of a therapist as the main pov character is kinda explored in children under the house, but considering I’m currently intending to get into that field, and I’m aware of how actually traumatic being a therapist can be, honestly it’s kinda tempting to work on myself.
I am so happy you put Dog Nightmares in A tier. I also accidentally stumbled upon it while on a train ride home from the airport and I loved the slow-burn dread. It's been a while since I've watched it but I cannot forget how awful it was seeing the dog-man for the first time. Something about the inhuman jerks just really got to me.
I see everyone talking about how phenomenonal this video is, but also the fact you try your hand at analog horror is the icing on the cake of this whole thing. Amazing work rating and providing insight on these different series, and what an incredible analog horror. Props honestly, I dont know how much more analog series there are out there but I would love to see a part three of this series! (If not, this series has a rewatchable quality to it too)
I was NOT expecting to see _boisvert's work in here! Love that wild series. Feels more like an art piece than anything tbh and I LOVE IT. "You're still in the basement" is a line that will stick in my brain forever.
Hey, just wanting to leave a note as a Native woman (Mi'kmaq, a tribe which includes Wiindigo creatures in our legends) that I really don't like labeling the use of these creatures as cultural appropriation. Labels like that really discourage people from learning about and appreciating our culture, so it just ends up removing us even farther away from popular consciousness. You don't know how many times my family has had to inform the average person of literally anything because people refuse to engage with us anymore. If anything, I think it would be good to remind people that these creatures have actual important history and to try and be faithful to the remaining legends. Besides that, I enjoy the videos!
When you got to the boiled one, I got curious and bc I thought it wasn't complete, so I looked it up. And youre right, I could not find the actual video. I didn't remember the channel name so it's not like I could go on the channel page and find the videos, so I was scrolling through a page of everyone elses video ABOUT the boiled one until I got to the actual original video. I love game theory but it is kinda sad that the various film theory and GTlive videos made on the series are drowning out the actual source material, preventing people from finding it (it's not matpat or the theory ppl's faults ofc it's the algorithm but still)
I like how in your horror there wasn't much of bigger twist of some cosmic like dread i expected, it wasn't a "oooh big monster will destroy us" but more of a dread of how we as a humanity are literally told what's our problem is but will arrogantly say "bullshit" and lock away those who might help against the expected results. The final shot on humanity played exactly same way dead planets from Voyager 3 observations really sets the reality of the ending. I might liked it if there was some underlying bigger truth like government already knowing it or something like that but the whole interaction was cool regardless, voice actors did good. Something like "yeah we spied on your observations and knew exactly what's gonna happen if you'll gonna resign so this entire interview was a test to see if you're gonna be smart about it and keep your mouth shut or if we'll have to come to more cruel conclusion, unfortunately you picked the second." Although it brings me to question if analog horror implies someone watching it on analog tv with a tape or something, then what exactly would happen to us? I think it's really missed opportunity to add in that this whole thing is watched by the mentioned mental health psychiatrist and leaving an option for them to do something or just vainly stay silent in horror of it.
Damn, should've recommended "smile guide" on previous video as pre-genre analogue horror that isn't all that known in English speaking world despite having subtitles x)
I love how in depth you get with your review of each series! One thing to maybe keep in mind for the future though! In the Tyrad witness segment, there was an image of sh. That can be really distressing for some viewers. I love how respectful you are when discussing this material and I’m excited to see future uploads!
I really love the video and your commentary. I think it's funny at 1:32:52 where you mentioned an apartment complex that doesn't make sense, because it's inspired by an image taken at a holiday inn at Heathrow airport in London lol.
One series you should definitely check out is Mikaeli hitting metal by Adrian Gray comedy. It's not very long and it takes you through a whirlwind of emotions throughout its runtime. It's not finished yet to my knowledge but you should really check it out.
I feel like the prospect of there actually being other life out there that destroyed themselves like we have the potential to is much more scary then any weird ass creature out in space. Also the fact that the government would just sweep it under the rug is realistic as fuck awesome story Scott and I guess the tierlist was pretty cool too
One thing I do like about Valle Verde is that if you pay attention you can tell what's going on, especially since the TH Brain Debrief document was released as a supplement to the videos. Basically it seems to be that a rudimentary AI peripheral for the PlayStation called the TH Brain was created with the intention of it being able to generate new video game content in real time. The TH Brain was going to learn by studying real human neuron communication, via some very unethical experimental brain surgery. Then the kids whose brains were hooked up to the TH Brain somehow got trapped in the machine, which was running an instance of Valle Verde to test the TH Brain. Now the TH Brain AI is essentially playing god with the world inside the game, literally styling itself in biblical trappings, trying to use the kids' brains to expand its own capabilities. And the footage we're seeing is from QA testers who are running tests on the TH Brain trying to figure out how to get the kids out of the system before the AI can kill them and assimilate their brains into it. Or at least that's what I THINK is happening because to your point, you can get like 80% of the way there if you're paying attention but there is still some logical leaps you have to make. I'm definitely excited to see where it goes.
Scott: HEY! Just so you know! There’s trypophobia in this part of the video! Me, who up until a few minutes ago was convinced that I only had slight trypophobia: surely me watching this while eating my food will end well Narrator: It did not, in fact, end well.
DOAI MENTIONED!! Iirc pastra has in streams mentioned he wanted to re do the early episodes of doai, I absolutely can see what your saying, pastra is a favorite creator of mine, they are a big horror fan so who better to make a horror series!!
Backrooms discourse always baffles me. It's not about "wheh me no want monster" it's typically people not liking people turning it to a shitty survival horror with shit like Almond water
the almond water thing is so funny. its such a perfect example of people who have no understanding of implication or subtlety trying to expand of something into a universe that didnt need to be, because the original worked best as a stand alone product

fun fact about the boiled one phenomenon btw, the boiled one himself is canonically meant to symbolize a ww1 soldier named mutsuhiro watanabe who did some horrible shit to POWs when that war was going on, and part of the reason the series was connected to him was because the story affected doctor nowhere so much that he wanted to permanently taint mutsuhiro's image and turn him into 'that spooky red guy from the youtube horror' and i think that's so goddamn based

I agree, the voice acting was fucking amazing, also great story
It's also fits Scott's theming, it's like one of the only times he's done something space related. But also it's such a different kind of horror. No demons, monsters, eldritch horrors, aliens, or anything like that. Just the existential dread of learning that we are doomed, and there is nothing to do about it.
I was sitting thinking "damn, this is really on the nose" and it was in a way I LOVED.
Incomprehensible horrors beyond human understanding my beloved
My only gripe with it was not being able to fully suspend my disbelief for how voyager 3 was able to know so much about the other planets. Having the story take place in a similar reality to ours while the plot is reliant unexplained impossible technology just kept me from enjoying it fully. It’s a great piece of analog horror, but a bit of research into how such satellites work would have helped immensely.

I’m guessing it’s a certain MMO RPG that you can play for free up to level 60? Cause if so, that game made me fucking *sob* multiple times.

Edit: Halloween Kid Cuisine is wild
"3 anger pills and then go to my custody hearing" made me legit fall off my chair laughing
Same for me but the line that did it was "this is the kind of art that only the most broken of carbon monoxide detectors can bring you"
Still watching the video (loving it so far) but I wanna put this here before I forget to:
If you ever plan on doing another one of these, PLEASE consider including the Lacey Games series by the artist Ghost Tundra, it is without a doubt my personal favorite Analog/Digital Horror series and I would love for it to get some more love and it'd be sick to hear your thoughts on it!

Something like "yeah we spied on your observations and knew exactly what's gonna happen if you'll gonna resign so this entire interview was a test to see if you're gonna be smart about it and keep your mouth shut or if we'll have to come to more cruel conclusion, unfortunately you picked the second."
Although it brings me to question if analog horror implies someone watching it on analog tv with a tape or something, then what exactly would happen to us?
Insane, I JUST rewatched the first one today lmao
There’s trypophobia in this part of the video!

the almond water thing is so funny. its such a perfect example of people who have no understanding of implication or subtlety trying to expand of something into a universe that didnt need to be, because the original worked best as a stand alone product
