Jamala fled her homeland because of the war in Ukraine. Just days later, she sings her ESC-winning song "1944" in the German preliminary round.

This song is about the deportation of the Crimean Tatars during the World War II. The song's chorus and bridge are in the Crimean language, Jamala is from Crimea which is nowadays, occupied by Russia. In this song there is no mention about the occupation of Crimea. This song was created in the memory of Jamala’s great-grandmother who was deported by Stalin.
But today this song represents the whole nightmare that is happening in Ukraine, the WAR started by Russia.
Russians are coming in our house and kill us all. They think they are gods. They are bombing schools, hospitals and homes, targeting families as they try to run to safety, they fire on evacuees. Russians have launched more than 900 missiles in 20 days. They are not attacking our army, they fight with our civilians: mothers, children.
So nowadays this song represents the suffering of Ukrainian people, our destroyed homes, our people who could build a future and now are killed or dying, because Russians are doing the humanitary crisis.
Our people are free and we will fight to the end, and we will never forgive Russians because they are all responsible for this hell in Ukraine. And the whole world knows the truth, and stays with Ukraine. Slava Ukraini!

In the song, my countrywoman sings about the tragic repressions of the USSR against the Ukrainian people (resettlement from Ukraine to the North of Russia. About 450,000 families were forcibly taken out in freight cars in 1944). Today - this question and this pain again has repetitions - Russia is carrying out genocide of Ukrainians - destroying them with modern bombs, tanks. It's horrible.
