I checked your moxfield profile and you've got at least 5 decks with commanders I've wanted to brew, so our tastes align, thanks for the c o n t e n t !
Your deck techs are so original! I really like hearing people’s edh deckbuilding strategies, since deck brewing doesn’t always come super intuitively to me. I like commander, but sometimes find that a lot of decks sort of take the most obvious route in terms of wincon/synergy with the commander. There’s nothing wrong with that, but for me one of the most exciting things about magic (and singleton formats in particular) is the variability from game to game and the “toolbox” nature certain decks can have. I have a proxy “phylath, world sculptor” landfall deck (aka avenger of zendikar at home) that I’ve played a fair bit, but i’m still figuring out ways to make it powerful but not same-y. A lot of the cards from this list that let you kill a creature I might grab for that deck, and kura might just go in the 99 as well. Keep up the great videos, and your deer icon is super cute!
With two banger videos in a row like this, each coming with a moxfield list plus a primer? I'm investing early before this channel blows up. I see great things in the future for you
this is so cool!!! so impressive + satisfying hitting that combo deck sweetspot of not being too samey + not sacrificing card quality. i love it when i see someone take a legend i never would've seen as a potential commander and fully convince me. you art is really cute too. great work! : )
Very fun deck. I love the idea of spamming the 20/20 as your wincon. I also find it funny because you asked for our answers to that kind of strategy. I have multiple decks that would have varying degrees of success in that regard, but my favorite deck I have is a Queza, Augur of Agonies control deck whose removal is primarily exile. So when you asked the question, my immediate thought was, "Oh, I'd have no problems dealing with a 20/20 indestructible flyer."
Elk, I loved the video and built this myself in paper. Good lord does it do some crazy stuff. Won the first game I played with it after making multiple 10/10+ Spirits with Kura and drawing a billion cards with things like Rishkar’s Expertise and Disciple Of Freyalise. Tons of different lines and utilities (some uncounterable). Great deck and great design ✌🏼
Just found your channel today (while sick lol) and immediately had to go watch all your videos! I loved watching this one, it's such a fresh take on lands from what I've brewed or seen, and reminded me of some old lands tricks, and taught me a few new ones too! You've certainly inspired me to go take another look at my old lands lists, so thanks, and thanks for being a bright spot while I'm ill ^-^
I love all of this. Super cool use of an unassuming commander, and mono color field of the dead decks are great. The other that I was partial to before this is orvar field of the dead, where the main trick is tutoring a land in blue, then you get to reap the rewards of a self-multiplying zombie army because field is nonlegendary for some reason.
What you talk about in this video about the decks never playing the same is why I love my Farid mono-red artifacts list. It can win the same way everytime, sure, but it can also wildly explode in my face if I miscalculate when I can set the rig off. I call it Slobad's Goblin Game for the Beginning Engineer, because as with all goblin engineering there is an incredibly high chance it blows up in your face.
Great video! Gave me inspiration to work on a Junji, the midnight sky deck utilizing feign death effects and big creatures with impactful deck triggers.
My first Lands commander deck was a Kynaios and Tiro Gates deck that ran mostly pillow fort protection options and some group hugs to keep me from being considered the big baddie immediately. Kura was in the 99 because of that death trigger being nuts. I didn't even know about the Depths Stage combo then. Then Omo came out in MH3's precon sets, and I bashed a bit of my K&T stuff into that, Kura included. Now I'm tempted to strip all that down and put Kura in the spotlight where she clearly belongs.
Kura is an incredible choice for a lands deck commander that doesn't rely on landfall synergy. Gates is becoming better and better in a monocolor deck, and you can now maze's end albeit harder than 2+ colors but its at least now possible with some wiggle room!
Since you're leaning into Marit Lage, Mirror Box may be worth considering so you can have multiple copies out. The trade-off is your commander / commander copies won't auto-die with cards like Mirage Mirror. But that can be made up for with the plethora of other ways to sacrifice it. And if nothing else, you get even more flying deathtouch blockers that eventually pay off with lands. The dark depths + Thespian Stage combo will still work because it's the ice counters that cause it to sacrifice, not the legendary land condition.
I have Kura in my Kruphix cloudpost deck as one of the best ways to get a full grip of specialty lands. A favorite line in that deck (which you mention, yay!) is bestowing springheart nantuko on her and either getting a dozen~ lands or a few 15/15s (or something approximate). Shouting out a card that WASN'T mentioned and also works in mono-green, I love Gaea's Touch in my Phylath "basics matter" deck. The mana advantage that card can give you to power out an early play can be quite surprising.
I’ve had a buddy of mine brew up Tron with this thing which is pretty fun. I’m considering it for my Vorinclex Superfriends brew as a way to find colorless-producing lands for the purposes of running some nice removal in Null Elemental Blast and Selective Obliteration (and it’s also a fantastic blocker for your walkers that WANTS to die). Cool vid, earned my sub.
I play primarily Azusa, which i dont pilot like a true lands deck, more like a generic ramp into big stompy. But Kura looks so fun its definitely one of my favorite cards since i started playing during NEO, amazing vid!!
I've had mono green lands with Azusa as the commander for almost a decade now! My favorite deck who I buy so many shinies for, whose only gotten better over time :)
I really love this list. Two possible adds: -New (Aftermath) Nissa as more L Cobra redundancy? -Ifh-Biff Efreet. Hear me out. It gives you a janky but hilarious alternate wincon. I thought of Efreet because I see that you're (wisely) running Berserk. Back in the day (like, back in the day), I used to run Berserk (when it was restricted) and Ifh-Biff Efreet in an utterly terrible deck. I know Efreet is on the banned list but, honestly, this is the best deck I've ever seen for the possible inclusion of the card.
@@pauldyson8098 i have provisioner as more cobra redundancy (it’s not really a landfall deck so I don’t really have much stuff like that) and the efreet id funny but I’ve never had issues killing with lands haha
My first lands commander was Mini and Deen Wildborn as I have always seen landfall decks run dry on land drops once they got a payoff into play and having a way to bounce lands and replay them work amazing. It helped me fall into the land I like to win with valukat. My current one is 4 color omnath but I don’t have as much fun with him and I am thinking of changing him
Cool video! Giving me a lot of inspiration, subbed. Amazingly, I actually have pretty much the entire list from the description in my paper collection so I'm very tempted to make this :0 I was planning on making a Borygmos and Fblthp deck that was aiming to dump a lot of lands into grave to get back with Splendid Reclamation effects and utilise what's available in Temur colours to blast people with multiple Valakuts (including the new Copy Land enchantment), but that idea is still taking a lot of work to get to a list I'm really happy with.

In terms of lands commanders, I gotta shout out Zask! Everyone looks at it as an insect commander, but it's a crucible of worlds in the command zone! With an Azusa out, you can strip lock all of your opponents - additional land drops beyond this help you shut people down even harder! Pair this with the ability to give incidental insects death touch, the ability to run the new Wight of the Reliquary, and being able to do stuff like crop rot into a bojuka bog? Zask is super cool! It does suffer from the need to be protected, but in green and black that isn't difficult! Plus you can throw in an insect subtheme, letting you use stuff like Haywire Mite, scute swarm, etc to both fill your yard to with more options, and just repeatedly mess your opponents up! (Not to mention giving an insect token deathtouch makes you real hard to attack!)
Ngl this card could move mountains as a secret commander in omo. I may make this deck tho. I really really love lands matter decks this is a great way to work with that aspect.
I've been looking at building kura for a while now, I've been thinking of it more from an equipment/voltron perspective. It's probably not going to be as good but I appreciate it's simplicity.
I also jave a very weird lands deck. A wubrg gates deck with jenson carthalion as the commander that likes big threats, multicolor bs and battles? It gets to work mostly by leveraging the mana of gond gate. Its super fun and surprisingly powerful.
So when i was just getting my sister into mtg, this card was such a dread to face! I could never build a counter to their White Green deck, and this card definitely didnt help Also, you can use flair of cultivation for free by sacrificing Kura to get 2 basics as well to fuel thespian stage
You scare me... time to start side-eyeing land hate for some of my decks. I have one friend in my core playgroup who loves lands decks, but the lists they build are so do-nothing spinning their wheels that I've never credited a lands deck with much threat. This on the other hand... spooky. What's your favorite card that you didn't get to mention in this video? Looking forward to the next one!
My favorite card in the deck is 100% berserk. It can be used to kill kura, can be a removal spell on opponent’s creatures, and can be used on marit lage to flat out just 40 someone and then she’s indestructible so no ill effect. It’s like a triple modal spell for 1 mana where all the effects just break the game
stone of erech would certainly put a damper on a lot of the returning lands shenanigans. might need to start running that annoying ouphe soon if enough people catch on..
If you found it funny to run command tower in a mono colored deck, I was brewing a deck the other day that is mono red and I considered running mana confluence. Heartless Hidetsugu taps to deal everyone half their health, rounded down, including yourself. The deck runs tons of damage doubling effects. You want to be at odd life when you tap hidetsugu with a doubling effect in play. It makes the difference between you surviving at one and destroying yourself. If you are at odd life, and someone pings you for odd in response to your doubler hitting the field, you have a problem. Unless you were lucky enough to draw one of the few non-symetrical doublers, all your damage pings now deal double damage, meaning you can't ping yourself to get back to odd. You want to gain odd life, lose odd life or pay odd life. Mana confluence happens to be a lamd drop that is untapped, gives colored mana and lets you pay odd life if you ever need to. It sucks to hurt yourself for your mana, but we were never overly attached to our health pool anyways with this deck. We just care about wether it is odd or even when we tap hidetsugu with the doublers out. (thought about giving him lifelink, too, through stuff like basilisks collar, but that just unnecessary win-more and I'd rather draw something that helps me with my weird little combo than the collar)
yawg, amzu, birds of paradise, deathrite shaman, jaheera, aftermath analyst, and to some extent six (though try to avoid it if you can) are all free-ish cuts. Tortured existence is pretty nice, but maybe not 8$ nice. Heroic intervention is free cut. You can definitely trim down on the mana too. Stings to lose finale, but oh well. Absolutely try your best not to cut seedborn muse though that card is so important i cannot stress enough. You can play the deck without her its just very good if you can find it in your budget to keep her
My recent and decidedly jank Yuma, Proud Protector armageddon combo deck probably would fold to this list just about every time unfortunately, slots are pretty limited due to deserts and spot land removal is hard to run when I need to consistently get like 5 pieces on board to do the thing.
I absolutely love this deck idea!!! I do have one question, however: have you considered running the 3 tron lands? I just see 3 lands at the same time, and that instantly pops into my head.
@@Jimbob-4141 the deck doesn’t have large colorless payoffs. It would completely change how the deck is built and played. You could do it if you wanted, but it’s just not what i did.
It’s because i dont have a big colorless payoff for tron and marit lage is stronger than tron and even if marit lage wasn’t stronger than tron field of the dead would be stronger than tron. Tron with kura is a gimmick which if you like good on ya but it’s not really for me. I’d have to warp my deck around it alot… by the time you’re getting tron in this deck it’s turn 5-7 already like you’d rather have a board than EVEN more mana
I think this deck is super cool and way outside of my budget. A lot of nice lands cost a lot of $. Like just look at boseju. I’d love to play against this deck, seems fun and fair!
Yeah sadly this is just one of those decks that can't be built on a budget. to be fair, its way more budget than a lot of decks out there but still ~500$ is a hard pill to swallow for some and definitely the upper end of what I would build. (something something proxy) anyway i do someday plan on covering more budget decks ideas i have and most of my decks hover around 200$
Fun shouldn't be gatekept by cost. WotC has made it perfectly clear that playtest cards/proxies are perfectly ok to play with - as long as you don't use them in a sanctioned event or claim they are "real" cards (aka "fakes" rather than "proxies"). Especially when it comes to building fun casual decks, you should absolutely use proxies for expensive cards you don't want ot buy/shuffle or jsut want to test before buying.
@@Taeerom yeah but the quality of real game pieces is nice. Also there can be various advantages of building on a budget. But overall yeah the secondary market is crazy.
Very fun build, but the combo is fragile in alot of ways. The lack of haste enablers makes u have to wait a full turn cycle for Lage or your scutes/zombies to swing And without too much interaction, some opponents can successfully pillowfort you forever Personally traded the mirrors for an altar of dementia and blasting station to achieve the same results, but also perform double duty as alt wincons all unto themselves
I don't like blasting station as much, its maybe like one in 10 games i'd have enough tokens for it. You might be better running something like a crashing drawbridge, but I like the altar of dementia add. I've not run into a lot of problems with just waiting for marit lage to kill especially since i can tutor boseiju to blow up pillow fort pieces. I've had games where I've made marit lage 5 times. The deck is very resilient.
Dumb question, is the command tower simply there because it’s funny? Because my understanding is that things that let you search for “lands” also let you grab “basic” lands? When would it ever be advantageous to grab that command tower over a forest?
@@33elk In some initial testing and after a deep read through the primer I guess I am curious if you could help me understand the decks win lines. My testing has shown I can consistently get marit lage out by turn 4 but my confusion is that in commander with three opponents, you essentially need 6 combats to win (while the other players relentlessly target you). Is this how you find the deck wins most often? By switching to control as a strategy once marit lage is out? Or am I missing something more. It’s a bummer marit lage is legendary or you could recur thespian stage and vesuva to speed up the process dramatically.
@@SumTingWong886 yeah you’ll typically win just by attacking with marit lage fairly like you suggested. Sometimes you’ll have berserk to double her power to 1-hit K/O someone but you don’t need it. The strength is that marit lage is hard to remove. I had a game where i made 5 marit lages because the deck can recur the lands so easily. Even if she isn’t getting removed you’re getting to sac her for value to cards like greater good/life’s legacy. Also don’t forget you can set up the depths-stage combo for the end step before you turn to close the window for sorcerery speed answers to marit lage as well. It’s a good move to do. The other major way deck wins is with field of the dead (and copying it with vesuva and stuff) to make a bunch of zombies. You can easily get up to like 6-15 really fast if you have a ton of extra land drops and that’s multiplicative with each field you have. This is a good line if its open to you/if you got your marit lage combo exiled. Also there is the option of scute swarm which i run basically as a last resort but there’s a couple other funny ones like lair of the hydra..
I ALWAYS name spirit on mirror of the forebears just in case. I have yet for it to come up, but I imagine the spirit mode will get used someday. Typically FoD or Marit Lage does the trick.
@@33elk also i was wondering if it would be worth it to run the lands Underdark Rift and the new Ominous Cemetery as removal options you could tutor up. Yeah they're a bit pricy at 5 mana but in mono green being able to shuffle away a creature or put X cards deep a pesky creature/artifact/planeswalker seems like it could be pretty good especially with all the ways (including the commander) you can tutor up non basic lands to hand or battlefield. Also i doubt anyone is gonna see the instant speed crop rotation into Ominous Cemetery. The only downside is that they both exile themselves as a cost. As someone who's played this deck for 8+ months do you think this is worth?
@@mcmc9176 They would be excellent choices! Ominous cemetery is the better of the two in my opinion which makes me sad because i really hate the border on universes beyond cards haha. But if it doesn’t bother you, then go for it! Not like the card is a particularly big investment anyway. Mana us not an issue for the deck. You will frequently have a decent amount.
@@33elk this deck is def on my radar/waiting in line to be made lol but this has been a great/informative video do keep up the great work and I appreciate all the interaction with me and the rest of your comment section
You're 2 for 2 on these bangers vids, I have never considered that fact she kinda just hands you a 2 card combo on death (if u choose to tutor it ofc) lol
@@33elk I stepped outta my comfort zone and got the MH3 lands precon, and that's outta my comfort zone on color identity for lands so trimming the blue (the color I didn't want to add) would be pretty cool. The abundance / Cultivator collosus combo is a LOT more plausible in mono green than jund lol
Nothing a boseiju can’t fix! The deck does get to run it’s fair share of basics, but if you time it well enough then it could work. A ruination or harbinger of seas would be slightly more effective because they aren’t artifacts or enchantments but there’s still splendid reclamation and fight spells. Hehe
Haha I’m well aware that green is probably one of the best colors for targeted enchantment removal. I was mostly jesting. Running into mass land destruction wouldn’t be much of a problem for me since I tend to avoid play groups that do such things. Back to basics is only in my near cEDH orvar deck since it gets away with 95% basic island. This decklist looks really fun and the video was well made! Thank you, I think I’ll build this using proxies and the cards I have around to test it out. I’ve been looking into making a mono green deck for a while and was looking at questing beast, but this might be the one. Land recursion has always been a very fun theme to me.
@@SumTingWong886 I was in the exact same situation you were in where I needed a green deck. At first I tried Yeva, then the green venture into the dungeon guy from afr, then i played kura and was in love.

It’s like a triple modal spell for 1 mana where all the effects just break the game
@@33elk wait i love that though, i never even thought about using berserk with marit lage,
Monogreen lands legacy style? Awesome!
Sick deck dude
She can also enable the mean feroucious fog. Not as good as tangle but allot cheaper.
Stone of erech has become my favorite budget tech card recently, and with playing this possibly my friends' too soon :)
stone of erech would certainly put a damper on a lot of the returning lands shenanigans. might need to start running that annoying ouphe soon if enough people catch on..
@@33elk also turns off the commander death trigger!
@@Senseovernet Very true!
Cute, I hope you keep making more of these!
I'm loving both your videos and your decks, definitely copying your Pharika deck and tweaking it just a bit to make it cheaper :3
yawg, amzu, birds of paradise, deathrite shaman, jaheera, aftermath analyst, and to some extent six (though try to avoid it if you can) are all free-ish cuts.
You can play the deck without her its just very good if you can find it in your budget to keep her
I am building necrobloom, thanks for the ideas!
@@Axcel2376 cannot stress enough how good nylea’s intervention is. Happy building!
I am about to do a Six Mono Green deck and obviously she‘ll be in it! She even gives 3 lands to retrace her immediately
My recent and decidedly jank Yuma, Proud Protector armageddon combo deck probably would fold to this list just about every time unfortunately, slots are pretty limited due to deserts and spot land removal is hard to run when I need to consistently get like 5 pieces on board to do the thing.
Great video on a very unique commander :))
I'm loving your videos. ❤
Kura might be a good tool in my gates deck.
Nylea’s intervention might be the better card for you unless you can consistently kill kura
Idea use a pinger equipment in combination with her death touch to turn her into repeatable removal and making her a bigger target or to ping herself.
This looks like so much fun 😮
I adore commanders that *just want to die*
big mood.
I used to have a Kura deck. I just kinda stopped. Now i kinda want to build her again but most of my good lands cards are gone 😭
My pet deck is tatyova. Started as an asie precon. Pretty sick.
This is instant Tron, but you don’t have Tron!!!
There’s another green dragon spirit with a death trigger called Jugan if you want to buff your stuff
@@elisetehhooman4236 a 20/20 will get the job done itself pretty often :) some counters doesn’t really change that clock
You've got a subscriber out of me dude!
Love this deck!
(something something proxy)
anyway i do someday plan on covering more budget decks ideas i have and most of my decks hover around 200$
Ya I’m sooo building this
Very fun build, but the combo is fragile in alot of ways.
The lack of haste enablers makes u have to wait a full turn cycle for Lage or your scutes/zombies to swing
And without too much interaction, some opponents can successfully pillowfort you forever
Personally traded the mirrors for an altar of dementia and blasting station to achieve the same results, but also perform double duty as alt wincons all unto themselves
Blade of Selves
I did this with AO!!! I made this with cheerios
Ao is the most popular of her cycle! I thought about mentioning them all but decided it cluttered the video too much
Dumb question, is the command tower simply there because it’s funny? Because my understanding is that things that let you search for “lands” also let you grab “basic” lands? When would it ever be advantageous to grab that command tower over a forest?
Dumb answer, it’s a different land name for field of the dead that is also just an untapped green mana.
@@33elk oh I see “reading the card explains the card” I guess I didn’t fully read field of the dead. Now I see.
Making an army of X/X tokens could be crazy too if youre not tutoring lands
I ALWAYS name spirit on mirror of the forebears just in case. I have yet for it to come up, but I imagine the spirit mode will get used someday. Typically FoD or Marit Lage does the trick.
@@33elk also i was wondering if it would be worth it to run the lands Underdark Rift and the new Ominous Cemetery
as removal options you could tutor up.
Cool deck I didn’t know it can search nonbasics
You need the alt art 😊
Damn, I have been gatekeeping Kura as a Commander for so long...
Haha we all misevaluate from time to time
@@33elk No, I mean... I've been playing it hoping it doesn't become popular so I can still surprise people with it.
@@jonaderjona5805 oh! Haha yeah makes sense. Sorry to ruin your secret tech…
You're 2 for 2 on these bangers vids, I have never considered that fact she kinda just hands you a 2 card combo on death (if u choose to tutor it ofc) lol
Yeah she makes for an incredibly unique take on a lands deck!
@@zombieslayer1408 I picked up a lot of lands from that precon. The gate and the desert are both really cool cards!
Hazezon is not new, ive been playing him ever since he came out.
There is Hazezon Tamar from legends, and Hazezon, Shaper of Sands from the Dominaria United Commander set. Hence why I called it "new" Hazezon.
give us your decklistttttt
oops thought it was just the primer
Hehe yeah its a list and primer on moxfield. It gets updated as well!
All fun and games until I back to basics the mono green deck
At first I tried Yeva, then the green venture into the dungeon guy from afr, then i played kura and was in love.
begs? 😳
I know this doesn't matter at all but "Kura" would be pronounced "coo-rah." The pronunciation used in the video would be spelled "Kyura." Cool deck idea regardless, and I'm definitely gonna check out your other decks too. I suffer from the hipster bug too lol
This is inspired. I just built Junji, and I'm bored with my Azusa Explore deck, so you might have inspired me to check off spirit dragon number 2 🫡
I have azusa in the 99! But having kura as commander makes a land deck play completely different.
